Following the success of Adolescence, executive producers Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters opened up about the possibility of doing another season of Netflix’s newest crime drama series. In the show, Graham portrays the role of Eddie Miller, the father of a 13-year-old boy who has been accused of murdering his female classmate.
Netflix’s Adolescence was originally developed as a limited drama. However, this may possibly change due to the show’s ongoing critical and streaming success. Speaking with Variety, when asked if the streamer had already reached out to them for a potential second season, Graham and Walters confirmed that nothing is really official, but admitted that they’re indeed considering the possibility of working on another story for Adolescence Season 2. "Possibly, let’s see how the figures are," Graham said with a smirk. "But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story." However, Walters also acknowledged...

Netflix’s Adolescence begins with a terrifying police raid on a suburban family home. A 13-year-old schoolboy, Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), is dragged down to the police station while his shellshocked parents, Eddie (Stephen Graham) and Manda (Christine Tremarco), follow close behind. We’ve been trained by crime shows and TV tropes to suspect that we’re being primed for some clever twist—that there’s some greater mystery at play. And then the police present a piece of concrete evidence that instantly demolishes any potential for uncertainty about how the incident went down or what part Jamie played in it.
Co-created by Graham and Jack Thorne, Adolescence continues to make the most unexpected choices in each of the three episodes that follow, and in every case it’s richer and more interesting for it. By immediately answering the question of what happened, it clears space to ask the more pressing,...

Shortly before “Adolescence” launched on Netflix, Stephen Graham turned to Hannah Walters, his wife, producing partner and regular on-screen co-star and said: “Oh God, love, I haven’t got a job!”
She was quick to console him.
“I think you’re gonna be alright — but don’t worry, have a bit of time off.”
Neither Graham nor Walters had any idea what sort of reaction “Adolescence” — the four-part drama they co-produced that tells the gut-wrenching story of a British family whose world is turned upside down when their outwardly normal 13-year-old son is arrested for the murder of a girl in his class — would generate. Written by Jack Thorne and Graham (who also stars as the boy’s distraught father) and directed by Philip Barantini, the show came with the added creative quirk of having had each episode shot in one continuous take. It wasn’t your average crime series.

We're only a few months in and the British drama Adolescencehas already become one of Netflix's biggest shows of 2025. Starring Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper as father and son, respectively, Adolescence is a gripping work of art that sees a family's breakdown due to an unspeakable crime. This is Cooper's debut as an actor, and — per director Philip Barantini — it wasn't exactly a challenge for the young actor. Nevertheless, during a pivotal scene in the series, Cooper apparently "lost it" because his character had to be aggressive.
Luckily, Barantini had a few words of advice for the actor: "You're special because not all actors can do that." In just four episodes that take place in real-time and a single, uncut take, viewers become the witnesses of a harrowing journey where the truth about a murder becomes secondary. Instead, Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old innocent-looking suspect, becomes a complicated subject and...

The youngest male actor to win a Primetime Emmy Award is Scott Jacoby, who at 16 years old set an age record in 1973 when he prevailed in Best Drama Supporting Actor for That Certain Summer. Now, 52 years later, that milestone could be broken should Adolescence breakthrough Owen Cooper, age 15, prevail at the 2025 Emmys.
Jacoby continued working until 1991, with his last credited project being Son of Darkness: To Die for II. Comparatively, the youngest female Emmy champs are Roxana Zal and Kristy McNichol (who was 15 when she won Best Drama Supporting Actress for Family in 1977; she would win again in 1979 at age 17).
In Adolescence, Cooper plays Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old teenage murder suspect, who repeatedly denies stabbing a female schoolmate. Jamie's father, Eddie Miller, played by Stephen Graham, eventually has his own questions about his son's guilt. The four-episode crime drama is co-created and co-written by Graham and Jack Thorne. Netflix’s Adolescence has struck a chord with viewers, racking up almost 25 million views in its first four days*. The incredibly intense crime drama focuses on the impact of a horrific crime on the family of the perpetrator while simultaneously exploring the pressures placed on teenagers, in large part, by social media.
No parent expects a Swat team to bust down their door and take their teenager into custody for murder. That scenario and its aftermath play out in Adolescence in a stunning manner, with each of the four episodes filmed in one take. What’s almost as impressive is accomplishing that extraordinary feat without making it the sole reason to watch the series.
The one-take concept works because of the brilliant performances by series co-creator Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, Christine Tremarco, Amélie Pease, and Ashley Walters.

Netflix’s one-shot show Adolescence has made history by becoming the first streaming program to top Britain’s weekly TV ratings.
Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham’s drama beat out long-standing broadcaster favorites like the BBC’s The Apprentice and Death in Paradise after its first episode was watched by 6.45 million people in the first week of release, according to ratings body Barb.
It’s the biggest audience for any streaming TV show in the U.K. in a single week, leapfrogging Fool Me Once, also on Netflix, which accrued 6.3 million in its first week.
The four episodes of the miniseries are each filmed in one, continuous shot, leaving audience members flummoxed at the stellar acting and trying to make sense of how director Philip Barantini filmed the oners.

Stephen Graham has gone as far as comparing him to Robert De Niro — and now Netflix has revealed the moment where it all began for the breakout star of Adolescence.
Owen Cooper had never worked as an actor before auditioning to play the central character in the hit British series, which is directed by Philip Barantini.
Netflix has posted the teenager’s audition tape for the role of Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old arrested by armed police on suspicion of murder.

The second scene is taken from the memorable third episode, in which Miller is analyzed by psychologist Briony Ariston, played by The Crown star Erin Doherty.

Stephen Graham's Adolescence is being praised for its technical achievements and emotional narrative, but the star's first collaboration with director Philip Barantini shows where the inspiration came from. Boiling Point is another exceptional one-take piece that doesn't rest on the flashiness of its presentation. In the same way that Adolescence refuses to let audiences look away from the bitter truth of the situation, Boiling Point thrusts you into the action directly and never allows you to breathe. Confrontations will explode under the weight of pressure and the truth behind these characters, and crucially, the world they've built for themselves comes out in a slowly devastating fashion.
Barantini knows how to use space in his direction, not only to pick apart the character dynamics but to force them into the light. Boiling Point is a slow descent into mundane madness, but it is treated like the whole world is coming down.

One of the most powerful moments in Adolescence comes in its final scene, when Stephen Graham’s character, Eddie Miller, is left alone in his son’s bedroom, holding Jamie’s teddy bear. This small but deeply emotional scene speaks volumes about Eddie’s grief, guilt, and love for his son. It also serves as the perfect conclusion to a story that has explored the complexities of parenthood, masculinity, and the ripple effects of one tragic act.
The Symbolism of the Teddy Bear
Director Philip Barantini almost left this moment out of the show, but his decision to include it added a whole new layer of emotional depth. The teddy bear is more than just a childhood relic; it represents the son Eddie feels he has lost. Jamie, who has just changed his plea to guilty for killing his classmate Katie, is no longer the innocent boy Eddie once knew.

Exploring the shocking reasons and chilling consequences when a young teenager murders another, Adolescence dives into each tiny detail of a family’s biggest nightmare.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Adolescence,” now streaming on Netflix.
The third episode of Netflix’s four-part limited series “Adolescence” centers around two people, Jamie (Owen Cooper) and Briony (Erin Doherty). The former is accused of murder, and the latter is the clinical psychologist tasked with completing a pre-trial assessment.
However, Jamie is no ordinary person — he’s a 13-year-old schoolboy. And “Adolescence” is no ordinary show. Director Philip Barantini shot every episode as a one-take. For an entire episode, audiences watch the duo go back and forth as she tries to understand what happened. Friendly banter quickly shifts tonally as Jamie’s childlike innocence gives way to anger.
The episode required 11 takes before Barantini got what he needed.
Doherty says Cooper — who makes his acting debut in the series — impressed her. “To think about that kid versus the one that turned up in that 11th take, and...

For all the miracles of digital cinematography, non-linear editing software, and the unseen wizardry that goes into something as small as sky replacement, they do open up a treacherous thought for audiences: “It’s fake. It’s all VFX. The bravura oner is actually a cheat stitched together in the edit.” In the acclaimed Netflix series “Adolescence,” it isn’t a cheat. Every episode exploring the fallout of a 13-year-old boy, Jamie (Owen Cooper), being accused of murdering one of his classmates, Katie (Emilia Holliday), is shot in a single take.
The true challenge for director Philip Barantini, cinematographer Matthew Lewis, and the entire filmmaking team on “Adolescence,” however, was to make the audience forget the gimmick of the oner and to bring out what great long takes actually do to an audience: make us very, very nervous. ‘Adolescence’ Is Not Just For Teens
Grown-up TV: If such an award existed, Netflix would have taken home last year’s crown for word-of-mouth TV hit of the year for Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer. It may only be March, but the streamer looks to have repeated the trick in 2025. Adolescence, the four-part drama starring Stephen Graham and breakout teenager Owen Cooper, has topped the streamer’s charts in 71 countries after launching on March 13, while amassing a flawless set of reviews. The show has currently got a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 98%/9.2 out of 10, ranking it among the best television shows of this century. As Katie Campione wrote Tuesday, it was watched 24.3 million times around the world over its first few days.

The Streamable’s experts rank the top shows currently available to stream today.
Just about everything in the television and entertainment industries has changed in the past five to 10 years. Not too long ago, the month of September was focused almost exclusively on the return of football and the launch of a new, robust slate of TV shows. However, as cord-cutting rapidly decreased the number of Americans watching television in traditional ways, the release calendar has shifted. So while there are still a number of new and returning shows premiering on broadcast channels during the back half of the month, it is nowhere near the numbers of decades past.
Many of the best titles on TV have migrated from networks and cable channels to streaming in recent years, but with the non-standard release schedules, it can be tough to keep up with what is airing where and when, and which shows are actually worth watching.

A harrowing limited series from the U.K. A spring debut on Netflix. A near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. The creator-writer is also the star.
With Baby Reindeer making an indelible mark on the awards landscape last year, Netflix is employing a now-familiar playbook in the hopes the streamer's latest buzz-worthy release, Adolescence, follows a similar trajectory to awards gold.
The launch
Baby Reindeer, which chronicled the real-life story of a struggling stand-up comedian and his stalker (Jessica Gunning), seemingly came out of nowhere. Fueled by strong reviews (a 99 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and word of mouth, the seven-episode series became an instant must-watch breakout, jumping to No. 1 on the platform in its second week and acquiring 52.8 million viewing hours.

The following contains spoilers for Adolescence, now streaming on Netflix.
Adolescence offers audiences no escape routes. This unflinching original from Netflix is a reality check some will find hard to face and harder to forget. It explores the cultural impact of social media with uncompromising honesty, daring to tackle taboo subjects head-on. Creators Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham have caused nothing short of a seismic shift in small-screen drama with this show and achieved it all in four episodes. With newcomer Owen Cooper, they have also discovered a potential movie star in the making, who provides this series with one of many emotional centers.
Early in the morning, an invasive camera follows first responders as they arrest a teenager. In that first technical flourish, director Philip Barantini employs the same single-shot technique he used on Boiling Point. A collaboration with Stephen Graham that revolved around catering and added an immediacy to that cutting-edge melodrama.

Jack Thorne has just stepped off a train when he picks up the phone to Deadline, the latest destination in a dizzying round of interviews about what could become the biggest hit of his career: Adolescence.
The writer was arriving back in London from Manchester, where he and Stephen Graham sat on BBC Breakfast’s famous red sofa to discuss their Netflix series in front of the British nation. For a man who always appears breathlessly busy with work, even Thorne seems a little dazed by the interest in Adolescence. “It’s been a really delicious and wonderful whirlwind,” he says.
Thorne and Adolescence director Philip Barantini first sat down with Deadline last month to tease the drama, which opens with 13-year-old Jamie Miller (played by the extraordinary newcomer Owen Cooper) being arrested by armed police on suspicion of murder.

Stephen Graham is rightfully receiving rave reviews for co-creating and starring in "Adolescence," itself perhaps one of the best Netflix Originals ever made. For Graham, however, outstanding work isn't anything new. While "Adolescence" may've formally put his name on the map, a quick search through his back catalog reveals the star has consistently delivered top-tier performances over the past 20 years.
Having proven himself a true chameleon with the monsters and tortured men he's brought to life over the years, Graham has collaborated with some of the most influential filmmakers and stars in movie history, including Daniel Day-Lewis, Brad Pitt (whose production company Plan B Entertainment helped get "Adolescence" off the ground), and Martin Scorsese. So, where do you begin with a talent like that? And what Graham projects merit should you check out after witnessing what might be his career-best turn in "Adolescence" (where he plays the heartbroken and deeply troubled father Eddie Miller)?

Recent Netflix hit Adolescence has caused an impact like few drama shows do today. Its presentation of a family shattered by an unimaginable crime has shaken viewers to their core and the miniseries remains among the most popular TV shows on the streamer. "Adolescence," the chilling Netflix limited series filmed in one-take, is one of the best things to come from the streamer in years. It's strange to think the platform could simultaneously release something as revelatory as "Adolescence" at the same time it aids the Russo brothers in their crusade to devalue the currency of moviemaking itself with the slick yet empty "The Electric State." Yet, here we are with one of the best shows ever to hit streaming and arguably one of the very worst films on the same platform.
If you've yet to catch the unmissable series, "Adolescence" follows a young boy named Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) who's arrested for the murder of a classmate. The show also stars the always-brilliant Stephen Graham as Jamie's dad, Eddie Miller, and Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, the officer in charge of the case. It landed on Netflix on Thursday 13 March, and the world hasn’t stopped talking about it since. Adolescence, the four-part drama co-created by Stephen Graham and Help writer Jack Thorne, is a harrowing look at male rage and teenage knife crime, following 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) as he’s arrested for murder and the aftermath that ripples through his school and home. The writing is gripping, the acting is astounding – but the thing that’s had viewers around the world in awe of this show is the fact that each episode is filmed in one single, continuous take. No cuts, no CGI blending shots together – just one camera, following multiple actors around multiple sets, for a whole hour at a time.
The series comes after Graham and director Philip Barantini’s one-take movie Boiling Point, which focused on a highly-strung chef during one particularly stressful night at an upmarket restaurant.

If you loved the intense, immersive experience of Netflix’s Adolescence, where the camera follows the characters without cutting away, you’re in for a treat. Some filmmakers have taken on the daunting challenge of crafting an entire movie in a single, unbroken shot, creating a unique sense of intimacy and urgency. Achieving a one-shot film is no small feat—it demands meticulous planning, exhaustive rehearsals, and absolute coordination between the cast and crew. Directors and cinematographers often spend months strategizing every movement, ensuring that the choreography of the camera, actors, and environment flows seamlessly. When done right, this technique blurs the line between fiction and reality, pulling viewers deeper into the narrative and making every second count. Here are some of the most impressive one-shot movies that push the boundaries of filmmaking.

Each episode is filmed in a one take and broadens the scope of the crime and its aftermath. The first episode centers on Jamie’s arrest. The second follows the detectives as they go to Jamie’s school looking for answers about his motive and the murder weapon. The third episode centers on a session between Jamie and a child psychologist tasked with writing a pre-trial report on his mental health. The last episode focuses on Jamie...

If you've been hearing a lot about the new Netflix original series "Adolescence" recently, I'm not surprised. This dark, troubling, and gripping story of a young boy named Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) who's accused of a grievous crime features four episodes — all of which are shot in a single take — making this limited series a technical marvel by any standard. /Film's own Chris Evangelista declared, upon its release, that "Adolescence" might just be the best original Netflix series in the entire history of the streaming service, and frankly, I'm not inclined to argue with him. Across those four episodes, "Adolescence" explores Jamie's disturbed psyche and, stunningly, makes a huge reveal right at the start: at the end of the very first episode, we see video proof of Jamie murdering a young girl from his class.
Thanks to this, the series is able to explore the motivations behind Jamie's brutal attack,...

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Adolescence” on Netflix.
There’s a lot about “Adolescence,” Netflix’s new limited series, that is designed to shock viewers. But perhaps the most surprising detail of the whole show is its complete absence of a big twist.
Jack Thorne, Stephen Graham and director Philip Barantini’s series bucks the trend of typical crime thrillers, abandoning the idea that these stories have to be told through mysteries. “Adolescence” doesn’t care about the “who” or “how” of its central murder. It cares about the “why,” as well as the repercussions the crime has on Jamie’s (Owen Cooper) family and friends. It’s the series’ lack of clear answers around that question that makes it so very haunting.
Did Jamie kill the girl in “Adolescence”?
There’s not a big twist in this particular Netflix crime drama. Yes, Jamie did kill his classmate Katie Leonard...

All it takes is a knock at the door for lives to be changed forever. In the case of "Adolescence," the new hit limited series from Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, it's not so much a knock as it is the blast of a battering ram. A seemingly traditional family in Northern England receives the awakening of a lifetime when their home is raided at the start of their day. Guns drawn and confusion ablaze, the onus for the surprise visit transpires on account of 13 year-old Jamie (Owen Cooper), as he's been accused of brutally murdering his classmate Katie (Emilia Holliday).
Jamie is taken into custody while his father Eddie (Steven Graham) assures him that everything's going to be okay and will meet him at the station. But rather than cutting to an interrogation room, "Adolescence" holds on Jamie's panic throughout the entire booking process in real time.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Adolescence,” streaming now on Netflix.
Netflix’s “Adolescence” is a four-part limited series that uses one continuous shot per episode to create intense emotion as it follows 13-year-old schoolboy Jamie Miller, played by newcomer Owen Cooper, who is arrested on the suspicion of murdering his classmate.
The action unfolds in real time, from the police conducting an early morning raid, taking him in for questioning and interrogating him to finding out what really happened to his classmate, and did he do it? Cinematographer Matthew Lewis worked with Philip Barantini to deliver the director’s signature one-shot style throughout the four episodes. That meant no invisible edits. Lewis confirmed with Variety, “There’s no stitching of takes together. It was one entire shot, whether I wanted it to be or not.”

Every now and then, a miniseries will drop on streaming and make the entire world pause. This is Adolescence, a raw, gripping drama about the arrest of a 13-year-old boy for the murder of a female classmate. Reuniting Philip Barantini and Stephen Graham after their 2021 film Boiling Point, Adolescence is yet another showcase of the one-take filming technique that so often proves impressive. Already sporting a 100% critical score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Adolescence has shot to the top of many people's 'must-watch' lists, thanks in no small part to incredible word-of-mouth, with some calling it the best miniseries released in years.
