‘Bridgerton’ Renewed for Seasons 5 and 6, Season 4 Coming to Netflix in 2026
Image
“Bridgerton” will continue its reign at Netflix with an additional two-season greenlight.

The Regency era romance series has been renewed for Seasons 5 and 6 at Netflix, the streamer announced Wednesday during its upfront presentation in New York City. Netflix also announced that Season 4 will debut in 2026, but did not specify any specific release window beyond that.

“Bridgerton” Season 3 debuted in two parts in May and June 2024, respectively, while Season 2 premiered in March 2022 and Season 1 debuted in December 2020, so a spring or summer release for Season 4 looks likely. Filming for “Bridgerton” Season 4 kicked off in September 2024, just months after Season 3 dropped on Netflix, at Shepperton Studios in London.

Netflix similarly granted a two-season renewal for “Bridgerton” in 2021, bringing the series up through Season 4.

While the shocking conclusion of Season 3 led to fan speculation regarding which Bridgerton sibling could lead Season 4, Netflix announced the fourth installment will focus on Benedict (Luke Thompson), as...

‘Happy Valley’ Creator Sally Wainwright Unveils New Series ‘Riot Women’
Image
Menopause, according to Sally Wainwright, is the ultimate punk rock.

At a masterclass at the Series Mania TV festival in Lille on Tuesday, the BAFTA-winning British TV showrunner of Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax, unveiled her new series, Riot Women, a dramedy about a group of middle-aged women who come together to form a makeshift punk rock band.

“I got the idea about 10 years ago and started mentioning to people at work, the idea of 50-something women forming a punk band,” said Wainwright, speaking on the Series Mania main stage with producing partner Roanna Benn of Drama Republic. “It’s very personal, it’s about my life, about the menopause…but I wanted to talk about it in a different way [make it] propulsive and exciting.”

“It’s properly funny and properly gripping from beginning to end,” added Benn.

Sally Wainwright Reveals How Her Band Of ‘Riot Women’ Learned To Play A Tune — Series Mania
Image
Sally Wainwright has assembled a band for her latest BBC series Riot Women but it turns out her cast could barely play a tune when they first came together.

The Happy Valley creator revealed today that just one of the five Riot Women leads had a musical background prior to cameras rolling – the lead singer, played by Rosalie Craig. Made for the BBC and BritBox and previously titled Hot Flush, Riot Women follows a group of middle aged women who form a punk rock quintet. It stars BAFTA-winner Joanna Scanlan, Tamsin Greig, Lorraine Ashbourne and Amelia Bullmore. Mediawan is selling Riot Women.

After learning their respective instruments from scratch for six months, Wainwright said the cast clicked musically almost immediately.

“They rehearsed together as a band and they bonded,” she said during a Series Mania masterclass. “They were literally playing together and had to get to the end without stopping while playing at full speed.

‘Riot Women’: Sally Wainwright Discusses the ‘Extraordinary Energy’ in Her New Drama About a Menopausal Punk Band at Series Mania
Image
“Happy Valley,” “Gentleman Jack” and “Last Tango in Halifax” creator Sally Wainwright has lifted the lid on her latest project, a new series about a group of 50-something women who form a punk band.

Speaking at a special Masterclass at Series Mania in Lille, Wainwright discussed “Riot Women,” the upcoming six-part drama which was commissioned by the BBC and BritBox for the U.S. and is being sold internationally by Mediawan Rights

The idea, she said, had come to her around 10 years ago, but she found herself too busy to work on it given the other series she had going on at the time.

“It’s personal,” she said of the story. “It’s about my life. It’s about the menopause, elderly parents that need your help, difficult children … my husband also decided to leave. But nobody wants to talk about the menopause, or it can be an energy drain.

Sarah Lancashire in Happy Valley (2014)
Riot Women |  Sally Wainwright drama heading to BritBox and BBC later this year
Sarah Lancashire in Happy Valley (2014)
Sally Wainwright’s new drama series Riot Women has unveiled a first look and the series will debut on BBC and Britbox later in 2025.

Sally Wainwright is perhaps one of the most recognisable voices in the British TV drama landscape after shows like Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack made her into a national treasure. Wainwright also created the all too soon axed Renegade Nell for Disney+, but the unfortunate cancellation of the swashbuckling series clearly hasn’t slowed the writer down.

Riot Women, Wainwright’s take on punk rock and aging, was previously known as Hot Flush as it was greenlit in August 2023. BBC unveiled a first look at the series which follows a group of five women who form a punk rock band to enter a talent show, but discover they have a lot to say.

‘Happy Valley’ Creator’s New Drama ‘Riot Women’ Sees Joanna Scanlan, Tamsin Greg Join a Menopausal Rock Band in First Look
Image
Tamsin Greig and Joanna Scanlan are ready to rock in first look images from their new BBC/BritBox series “Riot Women.”

The six-part drama, from “Happy Valley” creator Sally Wainwright, sees five middle-aged women form a punk-rock band and enter a local talent contest – giving them an outlet to vent about their demanding jobs, pushy parents, demanding kids and irritating partners.

“As the story progresses, it’s more than music that binds them; a deeply potent, long-buried secret begins to surface – one that unexpectedly entangles Kitty and Beth, the two unlikely creative masterminds behind the band, in a complex triangle – and threatens to tear everything apart,” reads the logline.

Rosalie Craig, Lorraine Ashbourne, Amelia Bullmore, Taj Atwal, Chandeep Uppal and Macy Jacob-Seelochan also star. Arxx have written original songs for the show.

A first look at Sally Wainwright‘s next project, Riot Women, has been unveiled by the BBC and streaming service BritBox.

The newly released images show the five women pulling together as punk rockers, forming a makeshift band for a local talent contest. But in writing their first original song, the group soon discover they have a lot to say. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ Review
Image
Featuring the voices of: Gaia Wise, Brian Cox, Miranda Otto, Luke Pasqualino, Lorraine Ashbourne, Shaun Dooley, Benjamin Wainwright, Yazdan Qafouri | Written by Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins, Arty Papageorgiou | Directed by Kenji Kamiyama

It has been over 20 years since Peter Jackson’s adaptations of The Lord of the Rings were all released onto the big-screen. With box office takings that reach almost $3 billion worldwide, 17 Academy Award wins, and extended edition marathons which repeatedly show at cinemas, it is an understatement to call this adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s novels a success.

Ever since, there have been repeated attempts to recapture the success of that massively influential trilogy. Peter Jackson returned to direct a trilogy adaptation of The Hobbit, which may have replicated the financial success but fell short everywhere else. Amazon Prime Video released The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a streaming series focusing...

The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim has debuted to $4.6 million at the box office, according to a recent report by Variety. However, it was revealed that the film’s performance in the box office was not Warner Bros.’ primary focus.

The anime film, which was produced on a $30 million budget, was developed and rushed into production primarily to safeguard New Line Cinema’s rights to adapt J. R. R. Tolkien’s works.

The studio has held these rights through a licensing agreement with Zaentz Co. since the late 1990s. Though the specific terms of the contract are not public, it is believed that Warner Bros. is required to maintain active development and production of Tolkien-related projects to retain the rights.

In early 2022, Zaentz Co., which controls a portfolio of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit rights, reportedly began exploring a sale of its Tolkien holdings.

Kamiyama, known for his work on Eden of the East, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Napping Princess, shared insights into the challenges and unique aspects of directing this ambitious project.

Director Kenji Kamiyama speaking to Animehunch The Challenges of Portraying Large-Scale Battles:

When asked about the most significant difference between directing The War of the Rohirrim and his previous works, Kamiyama highlighted the challenges of portraying large-scale battle scenes featuring horses and soldiers.

While the director acknowledged that animation was a medium that was suitable for portraying fantasy stories, the sheer scale of battles in the movie, with an added sense of realism, was not something that animation was good at portraying.

Lord Of The Rings: The War Of Rohirrim Drew Inspiration From Sam & Eowyn For Its New Characters
Image
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim writers Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, alongside Héra star Gaia Wise, explain how the movie's new characters drew inspiration from Sam and Éowyn. The upcoming War of the Rohirrim movie tells the story of Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox) and his defense of Rohan against the Dunlendings, later becoming the namesake to the kingdom's Helm's Deep stronghold. The movie also introduces original characters to J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, including Wise's Héra, Olwyn (Lorraine Ashbourne), and Lief (Bilal Hasna) as some of the more prominent newcomers.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Gittins and Papageorgiou explained the inspiration behind The War of the Rohirrim's original characters, discussing how some elements were pulled from established heroes. This includes much of Héra's inspiration coming from Éowyn, while Lief was inspired by Samwise Gamgee. The writers touch on other original characters like Olwyn and Old Pennicruik...

‘Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’ Review: Kamiyama Kenji’s Powerful Heroine’s Journey
Image
Despite several attempts to recapture it across multiple media, it’s clear that Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy was lightning in a bottle. Not that it’s stopping the people who greenlight big-budget projects from trying, and Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim is the best-case scenario for that effort: A visually striking, self-contained adventure bringing a new perspective to one of the linchpin tales contained in the Appendices to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels, combining cutting-edge Japanese animation with the audiovisual language established by Jackson’s original trilogy of films.

The film is ostensibly about Helm Hammerhand, one of the great horse-master kings of Rohan, and the tribal feud against his Wildling rivals that eventually costs him his life. That feud started a war that created a legend, and set the stage for one of the pivotal skirmishes in the War of the Ring,...

Missing ‘Happy Valley’? ‘Sherwood’ Season 2 Is Next Best Thing
Image
“Nothing happens in a vacuum,” notes Dcs Ian St. Clair (David Morrissey) in one of several police press conferences which punctuate the return of gritty crime drama “Sherwood” to BritBox (November 14). “There is such a thing as a mood or a culture that is hard to see, hard to define. But it can grip a place.” On this occasion, it’s not the deep-seated divisions stemming from a 1980s miners’ strike that has the stranglehold, but a middle-aged matriarch hellbent on exacerbating a bitter turf war.

It’s a pivot which both justifies a second helping – most of its BAFTA-nominated predecessor’s loose ends appeared to have been tied up – and helps fill the void opened up by another naturalistic, nail-biting BBC saga. Of course, its first season already had plenty in common with Sally Wainwright’s “Happy Valley”; an instinctive grasp of its Northern England surroundings, for example, and...
