David Arata is a screenwriter, writer, director, and producer. Born and raised outside of San Francisco, Arata attended The University of California at Santa Cruz, where he studied painting, photography, and theater, and began making experimental films in the vein of Robert Frank and Jean Luc Godard. After graduating with a degree in film, he continued his education at the American Film Institute, ultimately concentrating on screenwriting.

David made an impressive screenwriting debut in 1999 with Fox 2000's Brokedown Palace starring Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale. He is best known for his work on Children of Men (2006) starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore where he received an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay and his other credits include Spy Game (2001) starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, and The Angel (2018) starring Marwan Kenzari, Toby Kebbell and Hannah Ware.

As of October 2018, David is attached to a variety of active projects including, Bend (film, writer, director), Prometheans (film, writer, director) Dreamland (TV series, writer, creator, EP) From Hell (TV series, writer, creator, EP, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell) Rio (TV series, writer, creator, EP), (and others).

In addition to his work in Hollywood, David is a creative advisor at the Sundance Film Institute's screenwriting lab. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Kathy.
