Pcb & Dead Meat Partner to Release Frost Road via Kickstarter: "Pcb Entertainment, Keith Arem (Call of Duty Performance Director), Christopher Shy (Dead Space Comic Artist) - the creative team behind Image Comics’ award winning graphic novel, Ascend, is set to unveil Frost Road, set to launch on Kickstarter March 4, 2025. Written and directed by Jeff Lieberman, the cult classic has been restored in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative with Dolby Vision.

In honor of “The Last Drive-In” Halloween special, “Joe Bob’s Beelzebub Bash,” airing tonight, Fright-Rags has released new Joe Bob Briggs merchandise celebrating the beloved horror hosts’s past and present.

Fright-Rags has re-teamed with Plastic Meatball to create a glow-in-the-dark Joe Bob toy based on his time hosting “MonsterVision” on TNT from 1996 until the show’s cancellation in 2000.

The 3.75″ retro-style action figure has five points of articulation and comes with a beer bottle accessory. Limited to 2,000, it costs $20 and will ship in November.

Fright-Rags also has apparel with the official “Joe Bob’s Beelzebub Bash” artwork and a new “MonsterVision” design, both by Justin Osbourn.

Legendary drive-in critic and movie host Joe Bob Briggs will be welcoming two guests during this year’s special Halloween presentation of his Shudder series The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs, a special that’s called Joe Bob’s Beelzebub Bash – and now that the identities of both of those guests have been revealed, we have a good idea of which movies are going to be shown as well. Last week, we learned that one of the guests will be director Jeff Lieberman – and given that this is a Halloween special with a devilish theme, it’s likely that Lieberman will be there to discuss his 2004 film Satan’s Little Helper. Now, Joe Bob himself has revealed that the second guest is actor David Dastmalchian… and it’s highly probable that the movie Dastmalchian will be there to discuss is Late Night With the Devil, especially since that was a Shudder release.

Jeff Lieberman is one of my favorite directors that you don’t hear referenced often enough. He has directed several awesome movies that have dealt with subject matter like killer worms (Squirm), LSD freakouts (Blue Sunshine), homicidal mountain men (Just Before Dawn), brainwashing aliens (Remote Control), and a serial killer stalking the streets on Halloween (Satan’s Little Helper). When it comes to Halloween slashers, John Carpenter’s Halloween still reigns supreme all these years later. Not only did it launch an enduring franchise, but it inspired a slasher craze. Of course, it’s far from the only slasher movie set around our favorite holiday.

Director David Slade (30 Days of Night) and screenwriter Michael Gilio (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) adapt Norman Partridge’s 2006 Bram Stoker Award-winning novel Dark Harvest, unleashing Halloween carnage that upstages the barebones story.

Candyman is a gothic supernatural horror film written and directed by Bernard Rose. Candyman stars Tony Todd, Virginia Madsen, Bernard Rose, Kasi Lemmons, Vanessa Estelle Williams, Xander Berkeley, Stanley DeSantis, and Ted Raimi.

Jeff Lieberman’s Squirm cheekily suggests what Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds might’ve been like had it been scripted by Tennessee Williams. The film’s deft blend of animal-attack horror and Southern Gothic strangeness yields an experience that’s likely somewhat different than what you might expect when you hear the high-concept pitch: “Killer earthworms run amok in a tiny Georgia town.” Distributor Aip made a few trims to some grisly early FX work from Rick Baker, and a few flashes of frontal nudity, making sure that Squirm would squeak by with a PG rating, thereby allowing an entire generation of underage viewers to be exposed to its gruesome spectacle.

Any filmmaker is lucky to make a single cult classic in their career. Outside of the masters of the genre, it’s rare for someone to helm more than one movie that resonates with a passionate fanbase, regardless of size, over the course of multiple decades – but Jeff Lieberman earned the distinction despite only having five films to his name.

Lieberman made his directorial debut with 1976’s man-eating worm flick Squirm and quickly followed it up with 1978’s killer trip Blue Sunshine. 1981 saw the release of his backwoods slasher Just Before Dawn, after which his feature output slowed considerably. He directed the 1988 sci-fi comedy Remote Control and penned the script for 1994’s The NeverEnding Story III before making his return to horror in 2004 with his final film to date, Satan’s Little Helper.

Ostensibly a cheap, direct-to-video slasher, Satan’s Little Helper – like the rest of Lieberman’s output – subverts expectations.

As with most events this year, the Fantasia International Film Festival is heading back to theaters for its 2022 edition, the 26th year of its existence. From July 14 to August 3, Montreal, Quebec, will fill its screens at Concordia Hall Cinema, the Cinémathèque Québécoise, Cinéma du Musée, and the McCord Museum with the best genre fare the industry has to offer. If you’re in town there won’t be a better ticket this summer.

The festivities are bookended by the world premiere of Kc Carthew’s eco-action fantasy Polaris on opening night and, as closer, the North American premiere of July Jung’s Cannes alum Next Sohee. Between them comes the usual mix of festival favorites heading to Canada for the first time and eagerly anticipated titles making their debut. As you are aware from my interview with Gena Radcliffe a few months back, I’m a big fan of the Kill By Kill podcast, a show that started with a full run-through of the characters from the Friday the 13th franchise, but has since moved on to covering all sorts of well-known and deeper-cut horror movies with humor and panache. So, it was only a matter of time before I had to have a chat with Patrick Hamilton, the show’s co-host who has a knack for finding ’80s oddities that are just off the beaten path.

If you were being pursued by a wily killer in the woods, could you survive? Don’t look for me alive, that’s for certain; at the first sign of trouble I would be tangled up in a bush, or drown in five inches of water. Let’s not even start on the deadly wildlife, chopping wood, making a fire, or the inconvenience of being slain on holidays. That last point is a bit of a sticky one for the protagonists of Rituals (1977), a Canadian spin on Deliverance that would probably pair better with Jeff Lieberman’s Just Before Dawn (1981). And if you’ve seen that intense shocker, you’ll know you’re in good company.

Released in Canada in July, a full year before the States, Rituals received some good notices but performed poorly with audiences, and was quickly forgotten. But time has a path to redemption, especially for films that deserve that reappreciation.

Welcome to Fly Creek, Georgia. You’re more likely to come across a mass of screaming (!), electrified, and hungry earthworms than you are any flies. At least that’s the case with Squirm (1976), Jeff Lieberman’s feature film debut that will have you lamenting the depressive state of small town life, all while cheering for the worms to wipe out the less than desirables from the sleepy burg.

Released at the end of July stateside, Squirm received some decent reviews and did well enough at the box office, but the lost acclaim for Lieberman’s work starts here. His films were always noticed by critics, but rarely connected with mainstream audiences. Jeff Lieberman first appeared on the horror scene in 1976 with the release of his movie Squirm. The film was well-received when it debuted, garnering praise for its special effects and pervasive atmosphere of dread. Aside from these two notable aspects, Squirm also accomplished something else that was incredibly difficult—a feat that one would have otherwise thought to be nearly impossible—it actually made worms scary. It has since gone on to become a cult classic, forever cementing Lieberman’s name into the lexicon of genre cinema.

Over the years, Lieberman would make several more films that would also draw acclaim from both fans and critics alike. With titles like Just Before Dawn, Blue Sunshine, Remote Control, and Satan’s Little Helper, he would further establish himself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of genre filmmaking.

One of Lieberman’s greatest strengths is his ability to write.

It’s safe to say that the world is a bit weird right now. Much to some people’s surprise, horror movies can often be a way for fans to make sense of things and confront their fears in a safe space. Streaming service Shudder offers a large array of horror movies, TV shows, and even podcasts covering the full spectrum of the macabre. But how do you know where to start?

Endeavor is among the investors in online community content platform Tongal.

The platform, which has struck partnerships with the likes of NBCUniversal, National Geographic, Warner Bros and Simon Cowell, has raised $13M investment led by global venture capital and private equity firm Insight Partners.

Last year, Endeavor began leveraging the Tongal platform and creative community to develop video content, podcasts and series across a number of its businesses.

Tongal will use the money to expand its platform and further invest in technology and infrastructure that connects talent.

Riding a growth curve in TV advertising analytics, iSpot.tv announced an additional $30 million of investment capital.

The Series C round in iSpot, founded in 2012, was led by existing investors Insight Venture Partners and Madrona Venture Group. It brings the total investment in the company to $57.8 million to date.

Sean Muller, iSpot’s founder and CEO, told Variety the company will use the new funding to expand hiring across all areas of the business, including engineering, data science, product, customer services and consulting, and sales and marketing. The Bellvue, Wash.-based company has 155 employee today, with plans to grow headcount to around 200 by early 2019, he said.

The privately held company doesn’t disclose financials, but according to Muller annual revenue from core subscriptions has more than doubled in each of the last five years and increased 14-fold since iSpot’s last round of equity financing in May 2015.

As horror fans, we are constantly seeking out the new and the different. Because the genre is marked by so much sameness—sequels, franchises, remakes, copies of copies—it can sometimes be a challenge to find those horror films that truly carve out their own space. They don’t even have to be great movies, necessarily; many times, “different” is enough to make us happy.

With that in mind, here are 10 horror movies currently available on the terrific streaming service Shudder that are, if nothing else, different from almost anything else you’ll watch this October. They vary in quality from title to title, but what even the roughest among them lacks in technical polish, it more than makes up for in sheer maniac insanity. After you’ve cycled through all your favorites this October, why not add a little Wtf to your lineup?

Weird is a very comfortable word in Jeff Lieberman’s lexicon. From the night crawler nastiness of Squirm (1976) to his mountaintop massacre Just Before Dawn (1981), his films are always a little left of the norm and all the better for it. And in between those two, he decided to take a run at a paranoia thriller nursing a major ‘60s hangover, pulsating with psychotic, Kojakian ex hippies. Welcome to Blue Sunshine (1978), a film more potent than the brown acid your great uncle said he took at Woodstock. (Although he probably wasn’t even there.)

Released Stateside in May (after a stop across the pond at the BFI the previous November) by Cinema Shares International (the fine folks behind Soul Brothers of Kung Fu), Blue Sunshine’s limited run and puzzled looks from critics saw it quickly fade away into cultdom, where it resided for decades with Lieberman’s other films...

Next month will mark the return of New York City’s Quad Cinema, a theater reshaped and rebranded as a proper theater via the resources of Charles S. Cohen, head of the distribution outfit Cohen Media Group. While we got a few hints of the line-up during the initial announcement, they’ve now unveiled their first full repertory calendar, running from April 14th through May 4th, and it’s an embarassment of cinematic riches.

Jeff Lieberman's Blue Sunshine is a fascinating bit of drug paranoia horror from the end of the era of free love. The film has recently been recovered and restored from the original 35mm negatives discovered in 2014. It's been on home video before, most notably in a limited edition DVD release from Anchor Bay in the early days of DVD, but never has it had this kind of treatment. It is a bizarre little gem from a decade of bizarre little gems, and it feels akin to the work of Cronenberg and De Palma in its themes and execution, but never quite gets the same kind of recognition. Although he hasn’t made very many films, Jeff Lieberman is a unique voice in the world of horror. From Squirm (1976) through to Satan’s Little Helper (2004), he’s crafted only a handful of feature length films, each one different than the last. Watching him tackle a different sub-genre is like looking at a new painting by a great artist. Just Before Dawn (1981) is his take on backwoods butcher clans, an inbred cross of Deliverance and Friday the 13th. Everyone should own a Lieberman. This one is mine.
