While they are primarily known for their comedy work, a primarily comedic movie actor can turn out an incredible performance in darker, heavier fare. In fact, some of the greatest movie performances are by actors who audiences usually associate with being funny, seemingly unaware of their true potential as performers. Many might not realize it, but comedic performers can be some of the best actors of all time, especially when they take on dramatic characters.
It can be hard for actors to break free of their typical genre, especially when they get their start in the world of comedy. However, the best ones can break free of that preconception about their talents, allowing them to branch out into other genres tense thrillers or dramatic weepies. While a lot of comedic actors try their hand at these kind of serious roles, there are some that truly knock it out of the...

It’s a bit of whiplash to go from covering Psycho (listen), Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal 1960 classic, to Rob Zombie’s Southern-fried feature debut, House of 1000 Corpses, but that’s what Jenn and I are doing as we continue our month-long exploration of Ed Gein. If you haven’t listened to the primer (here), that’s the best place to begin.
In Zombie’s first film, four College kids – Jerry (Chris Hardwick), Bill (Rainn Wilson), Mary (Jennifer Jostyn), and Denise (Erin Daniels) – run afoul of the Firefly clan and fight to survive the night. Of course, the demented family is more fun to watch, especially sexually aggressive Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) and knife-happy Otis (Bill Moseley).
What’s fascinating about Zombie’s film, apart from how overwhelming his visuals are, is how many horror and true crime homages he packs in. This includes the trio of historical killers in...

Sung Kang, who is best known for playing the fan favorite role of Han in the Fast and Furious franchise, has made his feature directorial debut with the ’90s-set creature feature Shaky Shivers, which landed a North American distribution deal with Cinedigm. They teamed up with Fathom Events to bring the movie to theatres for one night last month, and now it has been announced (via our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that Shaky Shivers will be receiving a digital release on October 17th. The digital version can be pre-ordered on Amazon. The movie will also be streaming on the Screambox service.
Shot over the course of five weeks at a closed down girl scout camp back in 2020, Shaky Shivers takes viewers on a hilarious and nostalgic journey to an abandoned camp where two young women, played by Brooke Markham (In the Dark) and VyVy Nguyen (The Sympathizer), stumble upon a book of magical spells.

Shaky Shivers, directed by Sung Kang, is a hilarious and horror-filled adventure that pays homage to 80s creature features. Lucy and Karen, best friends in the movie, must work together to survive as Lucy is cursed to become a werewolf. The movie taps into horror tropes, uses practical effects from the 80s, and brings a campy humor while still feeling relevant today. Shaky Shivers hits theaters on September 21.

Plot: Fearing a witch’s curse is going to make her turn into a werewolf, Lucy heads to an abandoned camp with her friend Karen to wait out the full moon. But lycanthropy may be the least of their problems.
Review: The horror comedy Shaky Shivers takes its title from a cold, sweet concoction created by ice cream shop worker Karen (VyVy Nguyen), but we never actually learn what ingredients she has put into this treat. The movie itself is quite a blend of sub-genres, featuring lycanthropy, zombies, a witch, cultists, a Trapper Keeper Necronomicon, a Bigfoot enthusiast… and maybe even an appearance by Bigfoot itself.
Karen works at the aforementioned ice cream shop with her pal Lucy (Brooke Markham), and when a witchy woodsy woman called Mama Nature (played by Erin Daniels of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses) comes in after closing time, wielding an odd puppet and asking for food,...

"What if you had sex with a wolf?" Cineverse + Fathom Events are hosting a one-night-only special event screening of this indie horror film on September 21st – this week. Shaky Shivers is the feature directorial debut of Korean-American actor Sung Kang – best known for playing Han in the Fast & Furious movies (with a recent appearance in Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series). Two young women find themselves at an abandoned camp in the woods with a book of magical spells surrounded by classic monsters in this comedic send up of 1980s horror films. It's another new werewolf film to enjoy this spooky season, paying homage to the many horror classics from the 80s. Starring Brooke Markham, VyVy Nguyen, Jimmy Bellinger, Herschel Sparber, Skyler Day, & Erin Daniels. Looks like an amusing buddy comedy mashed up with every funky 80s horror idea they could think of. Might be fun? Or might be dumb.

Before becoming one of the most divisive filmmakers in horror with the likes of Halloween and The Munsters, Rob Zombie was just a musician trying his hand at the film industry. House of 1000 Corpses came together fairly quickly following a failed attempt to reboot The Crow, but the rock star’s Hollywood career almost never was due to post-production controversy that left his directorial debut on the shelf for three years.
Production on Corpses was completed in 2000 before Universal Studios refused to release it due to its objectionable content. MGM later came on board to distribute it in 2002 until a tongue-in-cheek remark by Zombie caused them to cancel the deal. Finally, Lions Gate signed on and released it in April of 2003, launching Zombie’s film career as well as a franchise that would be followed by 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects and 2019’s 3 from Hell.

Rob Zombie has released stills from House Of 1000 Corpses' lost ending, but will the 2003 horror movie's deleted footage ever be recovered? House Of 1000 Corpses marked Zombie's directorial debut, but the film had a tortured path to the big screen. Originally produced as a Universal production, the studio declined to release it after fearing it would only be granted an Nc-17 rating. Zombie then took it to MGM, but after a glib remark to the press that the studio had "no morals" for agreeing to distribute House Of 1000 Corpses, they dropped it. Three years after it was shot, Lionsgate released the film.
In order to make it R-rated, Zombie trimmed a lot of footage from House Of 1000 Corpses, including the creation of Rainn Wilson's "Fishboy" and deleting Jeanne Carmen's Miss Bunny character. He also reshot the ending, which featured Chris Hardwick's Jerry being eaten by Dr.

A couple days ago, writer/director Rob Zombie shared an image from the alternate ending to his feature directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here). An ending that would have shown Sid Haig’s character Captain Spaulding giving a ride to final girl Denise (Erin Daniels) in his Museum of Monsters and Madmen truck. In the film, Spaulding gave Denise a ride in a convertible – and Otis (Bill Moseley) was revealed to be in the backseat. In the deleted ending, Denise would’ve been dragged into the back of the truck by Spaulding’s pal Ravelli (Irwin Keyes). Zombie has now shared another image from the alternate ending that shows Haig and Daniels in the truck, before Ravelli emerges from the back.
Unfortunately, it’s not likely we’ll ever see footage of this alternate ending, because all of the cut scenes were lost while the movie was passed from studio to studio.

We talked about the original – and very much lost – ending to Rob Zombie‘s House of 1000 Corpses earlier this week when Zombie shared a still image from the unseen ending on Instagram, and this afternoon Zombie has managed to dig up and share another rare image.
To recap…
Originally made for Universal, the film was ultimately released by Lionsgate, and it went through a handful of changes in the years between being made and being unleashed.
Unfortunately, none of the “Director’s Cut” footage that was excised from House of 1000 Corpses to get its “R” rating has ever been located, and as Rob Zombie explained to Bloody Disgusting back in 2019, it’s unlikely to ever be found. Zombie told us, “There’s nothing. I mean, I don’t know where anything is. I gotta be honest. Nothing’s ever been discovered.”

The screenplay for Rob Zombie’s feature directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here) can be found online, and is quite different from the film that made it to theatres in 2003. Not only was Grampa Hugo revealed to be Dr. Satan, but there are scenes in the script that were filmed and cut – and Zombie has no access to the footage, as it was lost while the movie was passed from studio to studio. Among the differences is an alternate ending… and Zombie took to Instagram to share a rare still from the film’s original ending! In this image, we see Captain Spaulding’s Museum of Monsters and Madmen truck:

Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of Rob Zombie‘s debut feature House of 1000 Corpses, which infamously sat on a shelf for a few years before actually being released in 2003. Shot over the course of five weeks at a closed down girl scout camp back in 2020, Shaky Shivers tells the story of two ice cream shop employees stranded at an abandoned camp, where a book of magical spells puts them in contact with a number of classic movie creatures.
Brooke Markham (Friend Request) and VyVy Nguyen (Young Sheldon) star as the ice cream shop employees and are joined in the cast by Jimmy Bellinger (Blockers), Erin Daniels (House of 1000 Corpses), Skyler Day (Parenthood), and Herschel Sparber (Lucky Stiff).

Last year, Trick or Treat Studios released a 5″ tall action figure of the character Captain Spaulding from Rob Zombie‘s feature directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here) – and you can purchase the Captain Spaulding figure, which is called the “Finger Lickin’ Pistol Whippin’ Captain Spaulding action figure”, at This Link. Now Trick or Treat Studios is accepting pre-orders for four more House of 1000 Corpses action figures: Showtime Baby Firefly (who is accompanied by Fishboy), Rabbit Roastin’ Otis Driftwood, Rippin’ Axe Professor, and Driller Killer Doctor Satan. These figures can be pre-ordered at This Link.
The House of 1000 Corpses figures are each sold separately, and there’s also a collector’s case available for purchase. If you order all of the new figures and the collector’s case, you’ll have all the pieces you need to assemble another figure: the Build-a-Figure Tiny Firefly! Tiny’s...

Sung Kang ditches the fast and furious lifestyle for his directorial debut Shaky Shivers — a delightful gateway horror treat that recalls the Goosebumps television show or Are You Afraid of the Dark. Its Young Adult vibes bring two girls face to face with werewolf curses, zombification, and friendly ice cream parlor wholesomeness. Some might see the "gateway" description and wince, but that's not meant as a zinger — Shaky Shivers is filled with giggles and quirky horror introductions that make the genre accessible to all audiences. There's something Nickelodeon After Midnight about it all, as Kang turns a low-budget buddy comedy with teeth into a sweet tale about friendship, brainfreeze, and choosing our destinies over giving up to lesser fates.

Stars: Larisa Oleynik, Erin Daniels, Heather Tom, Christine Donlon, Christian Oliver, Jasmine Dustin, Jonathan Murphy, Don Frye, Eric Tiede, Whitney Davis | Written by Jonathan Murphy | Directed by John Woodruff
Fifteen years ago, two teenage girls were murdered at Merrymaker Campgrounds. The case was filed as an animal attack, the camp was condemned, and the killer never found. Now, years later Poppy (Christine Donlon) and Anita Bishop (Larisa Oleynik) get set to re-open their parent’s camp. And they even invite Roland Baumgarner (Christian Oliver), the novelist who made his name by penning a bestseller about the case, to the opening.
Billed as yet another Bigfoot/sasquatch movie, Animal Among Us is actually anything but. It is in fact a melding of genre tropes: monster movie, cabin in the woods film, survival horror, dramatic thriller, all rolled into one – sadly – dull genre film saved only by a surprising performance by former Alex Mack Larisa Oleynik.

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Check here for more double feature recommendations and other Halloween 2017 coverage.]
In horror movies, things usually go so very wrong on October 31st when it comes to the Halloween-themed offerings of the genre. But what about the night before? October 30th, or “Devil’s Night”, can also bring about its own horrific consequences, which is the theme I went with when it came time to put together my double feature of Alex Proyas’ The Crow and Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses. Both are coincidentally feature film debuts for each director, they feature killer soundtracks, and this pair of films is also centered around a storyline where the characters will never be the same after their experiences on the night before Halloween.
Based on the comic by James O'Barr, The Crow finds aspiring rock star Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) rising from the grave a year after his death to take revenge on the four thugs (David Patrick Kelly, Angel David,...

Last weekend, director Rob Zombie returned with a new horror-thriller entitled 31, which is currently playing in select theaters and available on VOD formats. Some fans are still waiting for an extended edition of his directorial debut, House of 1000 Corpses. But those fans seemingly shouldn't hold their breath for this to come out. The director spoke about this long-awaited extended edition in a recent interview, and it seems it may never be released.
Rob Zombie first rose to fame as the lead singer of the rock group White Zombie, and he would often direct his own music videos for the band, including one for the group's breakout hit "More Human Than Human." In 2003, Rob Zombie made his feature directorial debut with House of 1000 Corpses, which was hardly a critical (19% on Rotten Tomatoes) or a commercial ($16.8 million worldwide from a $7 million budget) success, but it would go on to be a cult classic.

Good afternoon and happy hump day!
Happy birthday to Barbra Streisand, Shirley MacLaine and Kelly Clarkson!
Natalie Portman reprises her role as Jane Foster in Thor: The Dark World. The film, which also brings back 2 Broke Girls actress Kat Dennings, hits theaters on November 8.
Bisexual actress Evan Rachel Wood dished to E! about her latest movie A Case of You, taking time off and eating her baby. (She’s kidding about that last part.)
Ellen Pompeo is getting me all revved up for the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy.
I may or may not be standing on set rehearsing a scene from the Finale#itsabouttogodown twitter.com/EllenPompeo/st…

I read the following headline and it annoyed the crap out of me: “Naomi Watts to Play Bill Murray’s Russian Prostitute Pal.” (Why’s my girl gotta play a prostitute?...

First Look At Leslie Mann & Gavin Rossdale In 'The Bling Ring' Plus New Pics Of The Rest Of The Gang
Last night, we got a particularly interesting eyeful from "The Bling Ring," with the first clip revealing Emma Watson's technique on a stripper pole, and today brings with it even more peeks at one of this summer's wilder offerings. The first looks at Leslie Mann (as the mother of two of the girls) and Gavin Rossdale (playing Ricky, a sleazy club promoter) have arrived, along with more snaps of the rest of the thieving crew, which include Taissa Farmiga, Erin Daniels, Israel Broussard, Halston Sage and Katie Chang. As you know, Sofia Coppola's latest follows some young kids who rob celebrity homes and party like there's no tomorrow only to find out that there is a tomorrow and it doesn't look very kindly upon criminals. “I was curious about these kids growing up always aware of their audience, constantly posting pictures online,” Coppola recently said in a DGA Quarterly interview.

Hermione! Is that you? Emma Watson is all grown up, has left wizard school and is stealing from rich people and prancing around a stripper pole. You've changed....you're really, really changed.... Directed and written by Sofia Coppola and featuring a host of unknowns -- Taissa Farmiga, Erin Daniels, Israel Broussard, Halston Sage, Katie Chang -- and some bigger names in smaller roles (Leslie Mann, Gavin Rossdale, Paris Hilton, Kirsten Dunst), the filmmaker's latest is based on a true story that TMZ would love. It centers on a small group of kids who robbed celebrity homes, seemingly fueling a lifestyle that spins out of control. It's a bit of a different vibe not just for Watson but for Coppola as well, and you can get a taste of it in this brand new clip from the movie. Like what you see? "The Bling Ring" takes your purse on June 14th.
