Alex Grech debuts alongside Rebel Wilson and Jason Isaacs in the bold musical ‘Juliet & Romeo’
Image
Australian newcomer Alex Grech shines in ‘Juliet & Romeo’, a vibrant musical retelling where he not only acts but helps redefine a legendary story.

Before stepping onto a film set, Alex Grech had already travelled the world as a backpacker, worked as a paralegal and bartender, and performed in high school productions of ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Legally Blonde’. But nothing truly prepared him for what it would mean to bring Tomasso to life in ‘Juliet & Romeo’—a role written specifically for this bold new retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy.

“I’m honoured to have shared the space with such a powerful cast,” Grech shares. “Having the chance to work with fellow Australians Rebel Wilson and Jamie Ward, who play Lady Capulet and Romeo respectively, was an added pleasure. I had a great time working very closely with Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter & The White Lotus), our Lord Montague, and Derek Jacobi,...

Star Trek's Patrick Stewart Once Played A Shakespearean Character On Tng, And You Probably Missed It
Image
The "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Defector" begins with Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) watching Data (Brent Spiner) enacting a scene from William Shakespeare's "Henry V" on the holodeck. For those who missed reading "Henry V" in high school, the story follows the young, recently crowned King Henry as he gears up to invade France. The young Hal struggles to be taken seriously, as his youth was spent carousing with drunks and lowlifes (as seen in "Henry IV" parts I and II). Hal, however, proves to be an inspiring battlefield presence, giving his fellow Englishmen the encouraging speeches they need to charge into battle. The play culminates at the Battle of Agincourt, which took place in 1415.

On "Star Trek," the scene that Data performs comes from Act IV, scene I, when King Henry has disguised himself as one of his own soldiers. He aims to infiltrate his men...

The actor on plans for a new Pitch Perfect, pretending to lick Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi’s ‘fun grandpa vibe’

What’s been the most fun you’ve had on set? FrNthOld

Pitch Perfect, because it felt like theatre camp. We came together in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was like college: hanging out with my friends, having fun, not really acting. For four weeks we were in boot camp, where we’d dance and do conditioning in the mornings – so sit-ups, stretching and learning the choreography. In the afternoons, we’d learn our 10-part harmonies and go into the recording studio. Sometimes we were really dorky and said: on Friday we’re all going to wear the same colour T-shirts, just to be like a squad.

You’ve worked with Sir Derek Jacobi twice – in Juliet & Romeo, and the upcoming Tinsel Town. How was he? Derekj2210

Elton John
Post your questions for Rebel Wilson
Elton John
Whether you want know about starring in hit comedies, raising the roof at awards ceremonies or snogging Elton John, the actor is ready to tell all

Unlike the Neighbours/Home and Away route to Hollywood taken by Guy Pearce, Liam and Chris Hemsworth, Isla Fisher and Margot Robbie, Rebel Wilson started her career in Australian comedy series Pizza and spinoff film Fat Pizza, comedy sketch show The Wedge and musical comedy series Bogan Pride. It’s no wonder, perhaps, she went on to a career playing quirky characters in quirky comedies. She was a bridesmaid in 2011’s Bridesmaids, the bride-to-be in 2012’s Bachelorette, and an eccentric employee at a breastfeeding boutique in What to Expect When You’re Expecting from the same year. She starred alongside Anne Hathaway in The Hustle, the female-centred remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. She was the ginger tabby cat Jennyanydots in 2019’s ill-fated Cats, and...

Hello Stranger review – interactive thriller puts remote worker in trial-by-internet
Paul Raschid
A lonely man is forced into a series of deadly games by a masked online sadist in this choose your own adventure – but bouts of paper-scissor-stones fail to engage

Interactive cinema cheerleader Paul Raschid’s last work The Gallery in 2022, cannily used the format to compare and contrast two fraught eras: Thatcher’s and post-Brexit Britain. So it’s a disappointment to see his latest outing, Hello Stranger, narrow its scope to a cheesy trial-by-internet that lacks the social commentary of Squid Game, from which it nabs its masked, filtered-voice tormentor.

Cam (George Blagden) is a shut-in working on assorted remote assignments from a hermetically sealed, computer-controlled London apartment. His main companion is Sasha, the digital assistant that runs his life (voiced by either Derek Jacobi or Yasmin Finney). Depending on whether you opt for being in a couple or single at the appropriate fork, hypothetical American girlfriend Mimi (Christina Wolfe...

‘The Day of the Jackal’ Star Eddie Redmayne on Tackling Iconic Characters, Loving ‘The White Lotus’ and the How Acting Is the Perfect Front for a Spy
Image
Though Eddie Redmayne currently stars in “The Day of the Jackal,” one of the most acclaimed new shows of the year, he still has time to check out other television programs – including the buzzy HBO hit “The White Lotus.” But the Oscar winner isn’t throwing his hat into the casting ring for an upcoming season.

“I’m too paranoid about butchering the things I love,” he tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “There are some things you don’t want to see yourself in because you don’t want to ruin it.” Even the fact that the show shoots in beautiful locations isn’t enough to convince the actor. “You say that, but also you have to be topless for the entire thing. And if you’re pasty and moley like me…I just don’t think the world needs to see my pallid body.”

On this episode, Redmayne...

Juliet & Romeo Review: When Swordplay and Song Collide
JULIET & ROMEO, The Franchise Begins
Juliet & Romeo repositions Verona’s ancient feud within a neon‑tinged musical tapestry. Director Timothy Scott Bogart and composer Evan Kidd Bogart stitch Shakespeare’s narrative to a modern pop sensibility (think synth‑laced power ballads that nod to Swiftian craftsmanship). Clara Rugaard’s Juliet and Jamie Ward’s Romeo carry the film’s emotional core, though their duet numbers rarely outshine the production’s more exuberant ensemble set pieces.

Dante Ferretti’s sumptuous costumes—electric crimsons for Capulets, midnight blues for Montagues—pair with Byron Werner’s lensing to conjure an almost hallucinatory version of 14th‑century Italy. Sword fights erupt into choreographed dance‑offs, each cut suggesting a “sword ballet” that reframes violence as stylized pageantry. Filming in real Italian piazzas lends tangible gravity, even when lyrics soar into playful banter.

That pivot from tragedy to hopeful extravaganza, capped by a “Book Two” tease, invites reflection on why...

New Romeo & Juliet Movie Debuts With One Of The Lowest Rotten Tomatoes For Shakespearean Love Story
Image
Juliet & Romeo is the latest in Hollywood's history of Shakespearean movie adaptations, with an all-star cast and spectacular optics to draw audiences in. The names attached to Juliet & Romeo that attracted the most attention at the beginning of its marketing campaign were Pitch Perfect's Rebel Wilson as Lady Capulet and Harry Potter's Jason Isaacs as Lord Montague. The A-list cast also includes Rupert Everett as Lord Capulet, Derek Jacobi as the Friar, and Dan Folger as the Apothecary.

Meanwhile, Clara Rugaard and Jamie Ward star as Juliet and Romeo, respectively, alongside other up-and-coming talent in the younger roles. Writer and director Timothy Scott Boggart is relatively unknown, while the movie is being distributed by independent film company Briar Entertainment. Notably, Juliet & Romeo ambitiously advertises a scholarly nature, its synopsis claiming that it is "based on the real story that inspired William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

On-Air Film Review: Wherefore Art Thou for ‘Juliet & Romeo’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Josh Westcott for Wbgr-fm on May 8th, 2025, reviewing the new film “Juliet & Romeo,” a musical twist on Shakespeare’s immortal love story. In select theaters on May 9th.

Jamie Ward is Romeo, of the house of Montague, and Juliet (Clara Rugaard) is of the house of Capulet. Those two families clash in fair Verona for territory and are bitter rivals. But the two hot teens don’t care as they meet and fall in love, would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? While the conflict escalates between the two houses, The Apothecary (Dan Fogler) has developed a sleep potion that mimics death, and the Friar (Derek Jacobi) has a plan for the lovers to use it. Wherefore art thou, indeed.

”Juliet & Romeo” is in select theaters on May 8th. See local listings. Featuring Clara Rugaard,...

‘Friendship’ Comedy Bromance With Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd Selling Tickets And Hats – Specialty Preview
Image
Limited opening per screen averages remain challenged even as the studio wide release landscape surges, but there’s a promising new entrant this week in Friendship, the A24 comedy opening on six screens.

The directorial debut of writer-director Andrew DeYoung stars I Think You Should Leave comedian Tim Robinson in his first major on-screen appearance. Early screenings in New York and L.A. have sold out, along with thousands of hats reading ‘Male Friendship’, the latest merch to hit the distributor’s shopping vertical and sell out. The former SNL performer and writer’s cringey cult hit has had three seasons on Netflix.

‘Juliet & Romeo’ Review: Tryhard Attempt to Make Shakespeare ‘Cool’ Achieves the Opposite
Image
Let’s get something straight: Making William Shakespeare’s plays “cool” is kind of the opposite of cool. The only thing older than trying to make Shakespeare’s plays “hip” is Shakespeare’s actual plays, which were plenty hip to begin with. Hollywood has been trying to hip up those bad boys for a hundred years. You’ll find John Gilbert and Norma Shearer making fun of studio execs trying to fix The Bard way back in “The Hollywood Revue of 1929,” as they squawked wacky lines like “Julie baby, I’m ga-ga about you” and “You’re just about the cookies for me, boyfriend.”

Generally speaking it’s the updated versions of “Romeo & Juliet” that age badly, but these versions can still have value. “West Side Story” remains the best side story. Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” is the ninetiesest nineties movie that ever tied nines in...

Juliet & Romeo Review — Pop Ballads Fall Short of Reinventing the Shakespearean Classic
Image
The push to find new angles on established stories has led audiences to some strange places. For the Disney live-action films, it’s ended in disaster, while the new approaches to Little Women, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and The Invisible Man led to critical success. Juliet & Romeo hopes to accomplish the same reinvention, providing its loaded ensemble with a pop ballad musical from the iconic music producer E. Kidd Bogart. Even though the music doesn’t always resonate, the visuals and choreography are remarkable in their own right.

Based on the classic story from Shakespeare, director Timothy Scott Bogart takes the tale back to its roots. Shooting in Italy and featuring a massive ensemble, we live out the events of the play in the 1300s. The Capulets and Montagues are fighting in Verona, and through a pop-ballad musical, the characters deliver their innermost thoughts.

Ridley Scott's Gladiator II Instantly Tops Streaming Chart After Box Office Run
Image
Gladiator II battles its way to new heights months after its theatrical run ended. Ridley Scott's star-studded sequel sees instant success on Amazon Prime Video a day after landing on the popular streamer.

Via Collider, the Gladiator sequel, which debuted last November, 24 years after the original Oscar-winning film, premiered at the top spot on the Prime Video movie chart following its release on Apr 23. The film's Prime Video success comes after it saw traction on Paramount+ following its January release on that platform.

Gladiator II returns to the Roman Colosseum without the original film's star, Russell Crowe, who won the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance as Maximus Decimus Meridius. Though Crowe was left out due to his protagonist's death in the first movie, despite creative attempts to revive him, Maximus' lineage takes centre stage in Gladiator II as his son, Lucius Verus/Hanno (Paul Mescal), follows in...

Image
The city of Verona is about to be filled with pop music this summer with the release of Juliet & Romeo, and yes, you read those names in the right order. A new spin on William Shakespeare's legendary tale of love and tragedy is coming soon from director Timothy Scott Bogart, taking direct inspiration from the same 1301 tale that spurred the Bard to craft the most famous lovers in all of fiction. It'll see Juliet and her Romeo, played by Black Mirror's Clara Rugaard and The Last Supper's Jamie Ward, respectively, not just defying the long-standing feud between the Montagues and the Capulets but the very conventions of Shakespeare's timeless story. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event for summer movies, we can share the official trailer for the musical film along with a conversation with the director, teasing the star-crossed romance ahead.

How Gladiator 2 Almost Brought Back Russell Crowe's Maximus
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

We waited a long, long time for director Ridley Scott to make a sequel to his beloved 2000 Best Picture-winning classic, "Gladiator." That sequel arrived in late 2024 in the form of "Gladiator II." Though not nearly as roundly praised as its predecessor, the sequel did finish as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year, and it did so without bringing back its previous star, Oscar-winner Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius. That's because Maximus died in the first one ... but that didn't prevent the writers from trying to bring him back anyway.

In a recent interview with The Direct, screenwriter Peter Craig revealed that there was, at one point, a scene that would have brought back Crowe as Maximus. This would have taken place towards the end of the film and it would have happened via a flashback with Paul Mescal's Lucius,...

'Right Decision Not Using It': Gladiator II Writer Details Scrapped Scene Featuring Russell Crowe's Return
Image
Gladiator II sees the historical epic sequel move on from Russell Crowe's deceased protagonist from the original film, Maximus Decimus Meridius, and make his son, Paul Mescal's Lucius Verus, the focal point. However, one of the follow-up's writers reveals a scrapped flashback scene that would have reintroduced Maximus despite his fate inGladiator.

Speaking with The Direct, Peter Craig, one of Gladiator II's original writers, detailed the scrapped scene, which would have seen a short flashback featuring Maximus after Lucius learns the former Roman general is his father and visits his grave. An early draft mapped out a sequence where Lucius would connect with his ancestors, prompting the connection with Maximus.

"There was a draft I had where I—So there was an idea that the Romans had that you could talk to your ancestors, and they have these underground catacombs where people's urns and ashes and bones...

Ian McKellen Urges Young Actors to Come Out: “Being in the Closet Is Silly”
Image
Sir Ian McKellen has a clear message for young actors hiding their true selves – it’s time to step out and live openly. The legendary actor, known for his iconic roles in film and theater, isn’t holding back. He believes there’s no reason to stay in the shadows, especially in today’s world.

McKellen, who came out as gay in 1988 at age 48, speaks from experience. Back then, he made his announcement during a BBC Radio debate, sparked by a controversial UK law targeting the promotion of homosexuality. Far from hurting his career, it opened doors. He went on to play unforgettable characters like Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and Magneto in the X-Men series, proving that being authentic didn’t dim his star.

He’s adamant about the benefits. ‘I have never met anybody who came out who regretted it,’ he says, pushing young actors to...

‘Gladiator II’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, Derek Jacobi, Fred Hechinger, Rory McCann, Matt Lucas | Written by David Scarpa | Directed by Ridley Scott

24 years later and the sequel, which has been re-written, reworked, and felt like it would never come, has finally hit our screens. Soon after the release of the best picture-winning original, Nick Cave was tasked with writing the sequel. His vision saw the return of Maximus (Russel Crowe) and his descent into the afterlife. The original script is available to read online and involves ancient Roman Gods and a montage of wars including the Crusades, World War II, and the Vietnam War. In another universe somewhere, that’s the film we would have all flocked to see, and good or bad, it would have certainly been a bold and unique take. The direction the sequel has finally taken is far more simple than the Nick Cave script,...

David Tennant and Michael Sheen finish filming shortened final "season" of Good Omens
Image
The second season of Good Omens ended with the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) returning to heaven as the new supreme archangel charged with laying the way for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, the demon Crowley (David Tennant) remained on Earth, and just after the two of them had expressed their feelings for each. The breakup was hard for fans to watch.

Also hard to watch: Neil Gaiman, who co-wrote the original Good Omens book with Terry Pratchett, going down in flames as he was accused of sexual assault. Originally, Prime Video was going to make a third and final season of Good Omens to wrap up the story. But after the Gaiman scandal broke, production on season 3 was paused, and eventually it was reworked so that we're getting one final 90-minute episode, rather than a whole season of TV.

It's anybody's guess how this final super-episode will go over,...

Frasier's 15 Best Guest Stars, Ranked
Image
One of the greatest sitcoms ever created, "Frasier" had its fill of memorable guest appearances during its eleven season run from 1993 to 2004, amassing an incredible 23 Emmy nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series. While Kelsey Grammer, David Hyde Pierce, John Mahony, Jane Leeves, and Peri Gilpin steered the ship for over a decade, like most long-running shows (sitcom or not) the supporting cast, recurring characters, and famous guest spots created interesting and unique dynamics to keep the spirit of the show fresh.

Choosing only 15 guest stars for a show as renowned as "Frasier" proved a difficult challenge, with many amazing performances left off the list for some lesser known appearances. It should also be noted that this list only includes on-screen guest appearances, as the number of famous voices who called in to "The Dr. Frasier Crane Show" on Kacl is far too expansive to consolidate into one list.
