Exclusive: Political drama-thriller Words Of War, about the life and murder of Russian-American investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, has sold to further international territories.

Deals have been closed with Trade Media in France, Mis Label for Scandinavia, Noori Pictures for South Korea and Vertical for Eastern Europe (excluding Poland). The film is now available for streaming in the U.S. via Neon and Bleecker’s Streets joint-venture Decal.

BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake, Oscar-nominee Ciarán Hinds and BAFTA-nominee Jason Isaacs star in the film, which is executive-produced by Sean Penn and U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-14).

Unsurprisingly, Donald will play Daryl. He is an Australian acting vet who has appeared in the likes of Home and Away, Wentworth and the recent Office: Australia.

Series 3 of The Dry sees original cast return including IFTA nominee Siobhán Cullen as Caroline, Adam Richardson as Ant, Oscar nominee Ciarán Hinds as Tom, Pom Boyd as Bernie, Moe Dunford as Jack and Eoin Duffy as Rory.

Produced by Normal People maker Element Pictures, The Dry has over the past few years been a rare gem as an ITV comedy-drama running for multiple seasons, while it has also performed well for Irish broadcaster RTÉ.

The show is created by BAFTA-nominated playwright Nancy Harris (Dates) and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paddy Breathnach. Harris said: “It has been a true joy to see audiences embrace the Sheridan family in all their dysfunctional glory and I am so grateful to have gotten to tell this story over three seasons. Without knowing it, Jacob Elordi and Justin Kurzel had formed a mutual admiration society prior to collaborating on the limited series “The Narrow Road to the Deep North.” Elordi had been a fan of the filmmaker, a fellow Aussie, since seeing Kurzel’s gutting 2011 feature debut, “Snowtown,” when he was a young teenager. “Especially in Australia, it’s one of the first films that you find when you’re in high school that’s a little different and you have to talk to people about,” says the actor.

Jacob Elordi’s latest project is a return to TV with Justin Kurzel’s limited series “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” which premiered on Prime Video last month. Following its premiere in Berlin in February, reviews raved about Elordi’s performance as 1940s war doctor Dorrigo Evans, following the Aussie story adapted from Richard Flanagan’s novel of the same name.

James Gunn's newly rebooted superhero universe, nicknamed the Dcu (for DC Universe), is set to launch on July 11, 2025, with the release of "Superman," yet another live-action feature film to star the Man of Steel. Jacob Elordi’s performance in The Narrow Road Into the Deep North earned a last-minute shift onto the Primetime Emmy ballot, positioning the five-part Australian drama against heavyweight contenders in limited-series categories. Sony Pictures Television and Prime Video submitted the show just before the Television Academy’s May 8 deadline, moving it from the International branch into contention for Best Limited or Anthology Series, Lead Actor (Elordi), Directing (Justin Kurzel) and Writing (Shaun Grant).

Adapted from Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize–winning novel, The Narrow Road Into the Deep North follows an Australian surgeon before and after World War II. Elordi portrays the younger version of a doctor whose Pow experience is haunted by memories of a wartime affair (Odessa Young) and revisited decades later by Ciarán Hinds. Since its April 18 release on Prime Video, the series has achieved a perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating, edging past Netflix’s British import Adolescence.

At the last minute, the Emmys race is getting a big new contender.

The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively report that The Narrow Road to the Deep North, a hugely acclaimed Australian limited series that was directed by Justin Kurzel (Nitram and The Order) and stars Jacob Elordi (Euphoria and Saltburn), was submitted for Primetime — as opposed to International — Emmys consideration just ahead of the TV Academy’s May 8 entry deadline.

The show, which Sony Pictures Television licensed to Amazon’s Prime Video, and which dropped on that streaming service April 18, will be on the ballot in a handful of categories: best limited or anthology series, actor in a limited or anthology series or a TV movie (Elordi), directing for a limited or anthology series or a TV movie (Kurzel), and writing for a limited or anthology series or a TV movie (Shaun Grant, who penned all five episodes).

It’s a potent moment for a film like “Words of War,” as press freedoms and other accoutrements of democracy seem to be under attack around the world. There remain few stronger recent-history illustrations of that threat than the case of Anna Politkovskaya, a prominent Russian journalist noted for her relentless exposure of government corruption and harmful policies, particularly around the Second Chechen War. Presumably in retaliation, she was assassinated two decades ago — on Vladimir Putin’s birthday, yet.

Politkovskaya certainly merits the admiring dramatic treatment accorded by “Words of War,” which counts Sean Penn among its executive producers. But this U.K. production, with Maxine Peake in the central role, earns more points for its noble intentions than artistic inspiration or raw impact. It’s a polished, pedestrian biopic, with direction by British TV veteran James Strong that smooths over instead of elevating Eric Poppen’s cliche-riddled script.
