Faster Pussycat Singer Taime Downe Opens Up About Late Fiancée’s “Heartbreaking” Death After She Went Overboard on 80s Cruise
Image
Faster Pussycat singer Taime Downe is opening up about the tragic death of his late fiancée, Kimberly Burch, after she went overboard on a Royal Caribbean ship this March.

During a recent conversation with Eddie Trunk on SiriusXM’s Faction Talk, the musician addressed Burch’s “heartbreaking” death that occurred during Royal Caribbean’s 80s Cruise, where his band was one of many acts scheduled to perform. Trunk noted after the tragedy, he and some friends were “very concerned” about Burch’s death affecting his sobriety.

Downe, who has been sober for eight years, said, “What happened with Kimberly too was alcohol and prescription related. So you know, I blame alcohol and pills on it.” He added that he has “hatred for booze, because I know I love the hell outta Kimberly, and it was just hard to deal with.”

At the time of the incident, Burch’s mother, Carnell Burch,...

5 Actresses Who Were Almost Cast As Star Trek's Tasha Yar Before Denise Crosby
Image
On the original casting call for "Star Trek: the Next Generation," authored in the late months of 1986, the Enterprise's security chief was to be a Latina character named Macha Hernandez, said to be modeled after the character Vasquez (Jenette Goldstein) from James Cameron's then-recent film "Aliens." Indeed, there was a brief attempt to hire Goldstein for the role, until writer D.C. Fontana pointed out that she wasn't actually Latina. The character was renamed Tanya as a result, then eventually Tasha. The new Tasha Yar was given an intriguing backstory. She was a survivor of an ambitious Earth colony that had, through greed and mismanagement, completely collapsed. She lived among lawlessness, rampant sexual abuse, and poverty before escaping and joining Starfleet.

Denise Crosby was ultimately cast as Tasha Yar, and the show's producers gave the character a position on the bridge, ensuring that Yar would always be on camera. Crosby,...

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2025: See our voter’s unfiltered official ballot
Image
I officially became one of the 1,200 music industry members comprising the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s voting body in 2022 — the year that my long-snubbed favorite childhood band just so happened to be on the ballot for the first time. I could not check that “Duran Duran” box fast enough. And a few months later, there I was at Los Angeles’s Microsoft Theatre, excitedly cheering them on as they opened the Rock Hall ceremony and were inducted alongside the likes of Dolly Parton, Judas Priest, and Eminem.

Since then, I have not always gotten my way when it comes to the Hall’s inductions. But as a voter, I still take the responsibility seriously… well, most of the time, at least.

This year’s batch of 14 contenders is solid — it’s difficult to make a compelling argument for why nominees like Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Maná, Phish, or the...

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: The Best Movie You Never Saw
Image
Wherever you go, there you are. That iconic line has become a pop culture mainstay thanks to one of the strangest movies of the 80s, Buckaroo Banzai or, as it is formally titled, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. This 1984 science fiction movie has been a cult classic for four decades and remains a fan favorite thanks to its virtually unexplainable plot. Part comedy, part action, part scifi, part martial arts, part musical, part western, part satire and part of a franchise that never came to be, Buckaroo Banzai may be the single most bizarre movie we have ever covered for this series.

A box office bomb when it was released, grossing only six million against a seventeen million dollar budget, Buckaroo Banzai holds a decent 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics sum it up succinctly as “violating every rule of storytelling and narrative structure in creating...

Video Shows Kimberly Burch Jumping From ’80s Cruise; Faster Pussycat Performances Canceled Onboard
Image
A video shows Kimberly Burch jumping overboard from the ’80s Cruise, a source tells The Hollywood Reporter. Burch went overboard from the Royal Caribbean ship earlier this week, though it was unclear whether she fell or jumped. Security footage from the ship appears to show the latter.

The Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas is registered in the Bahamas, giving jurisdiction to the Nassau police who came aboard to review the case and subsequently cleared the woman’s fiancé, Faster Pussycat singer Taime Downe, of any wrongdoing. The band’s performances scheduled for Friday night have been removed from the cruise’s lineup.

According to a Facebook post by Riki Rachtman, a radio personality and the former host of MTV’s Headbangers Ball, who says he is in touch with Downe, “There is video of [Burch] committing suicide and Tamie was cleared of all charges.” Rachtman, who calls Downe his best friend,...

’80s Cruise Band’s Singer to Skip Show After Fiancée Went Overboard
Image
The band is, quite literally, playing on — only without its lead singer.

Faster Pussycat will still play its gig later this week aboard an ’80s nostalgia cruise after lead singer Taime Downe’s fiancée went overboard three days ago and is now presumed dead. According to a source close to the band, Downe will sit out the show, and Faster Pussycat will play cover songs instead of their usual set list.

Kimberly Burch, 56, fell off the Royal Caribbean ship Explorer of the Seas on March 2 following an argument with Downe, 60. It’s unclear whether she accidentally fell or jumped, but Burch’s mother told TMZ that she believes her daughter would not have intentionally hurt herself. According to Page Six, Burch has reportedly been in a relationship with Downe for seven years.

Yet his glam metal band will fulfill their cruise ship contract to perform a second show during the cruise.

Kimberly Burch, Fiancée of Faster Pussycat Singer Taime Downe, Falls to Death on Royal Caribbean Ship During The 80s Cruise
Image
A woman went overboard from the Royal Caribbean ship Explorer of the Seas during the first day of The 80s Cruise, a nostalgia cruise featuring musical acts such as Squeeze, Adam Ant, Tiffany and Men at Work.

The woman has been identified as Kimberly Burch, fiancée of Faster Pussycat singer Taime Downe. The rock group was one of the acts that were part of the cruise’s lineup. Her mother, Carnell Burch, told TMZ that Burch fell off the ship following an argument with Downe, though it’s unclear whether she accidentally fell or jumped. Burch’s mom believes she would not have intentionally hurt herself.

A Facebook post from Burch’s family on Tuesday said she “will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her,” and asked for prayers “during this time for our family as we try to wrap our minds around this heartbreaking tragedy.”

Faster Pussycat Singer’s Fiancée Dies After Falling Overboard on ’80s Cruise That Band Was Playing
Image
Faster Pussycat singer Taime Downe’s fiancée, Kimberly Burch, has died after falling overboard on an ’80s cruise that the band was playing.

According to a report from TMZ, Burch was accompanying Downe and Faster Pussycat aboard “The ’80s Cruise,” a decade-themed fest that the glam-metal band was booked to play alongside Squeeze, Adam Ant, Christopher Cross, Men at Work, and more. Downe and company were set to perform on Sunday (March 2nd) and Tuesday (March 4th).

Kimberly’s mother, Carnell Burch, told TMZ that her daughter fell to her death shortly after a heated argument with Downe — her partner of six or seven years — while aboard the Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas cruise ship, roughly 20 miles away from Freeport, Bahamas.

It remains undetermined whether Kimberly jumped, was forced, or accidentally fell overboard. Carnell said Kimberly was drinking on the cruise, which was “out of character,” but that she...

Alice Lowe
Timestalker review – Alice Lowe’s anti-romcom is a darkly hilarious spin through history
Alice Lowe
The actor and film-maker’s ingenious comedy sees her play a gamut of characters who meet gory ends chasing a not-worth-it love interest

The Taoist philosopher Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly – but couldn’t be sure if the butterfly wasn’t the one having the dream about him. Film-maker Alice Lowe dreams her way into a cosmically recurring persona in this likably chaotic, flawed comedy; she plays a woman who regenerates Blackadderishly throughout the years, from the 1680s to the 1980s, forever in love with the same man, forever destined to sacrifice herself for him, almost but not quite in possession of the knowledge that this guy is unworthy of her. At each stage, the incarnations of the past are perhaps dream-memories and the personae of the future are prophecies. Or … is she just very, very mad?

In 1688, Lowe is Agnes, a humble Scottish maidservant who is enamoured of...

Matthew Perrys Alleged Dealer Erik Fleming Once Directed Scarlett Johansson
Image
The overdose death of Matthew Perry was a shock to anyone who grew up in the 90s watching Friends. Five people were arrested surrounding Matthew Perrys premature death, including a local physician and the actors live-in assistant. Additionally, Erik Fleming, the director of the childrens fantasy film My Brother the Pig, was charged as a middleman in the case. Fleming, who was known to Perry as a TV acquaintance, now faces up to 25 years in his federal case.

It's somewhat of a bizarre coincidence (or another tragic Hollywood downfall) that Fleming was involved in the scheme that killed the '90s star, considering he was once an up-and-coming director in the same decade. Fleming produced the first season of The Surreal Life, which starred Mc Hammer, Corey Feldman, Vince Neil, and others. He directed the bizarre 1995 sci-fi film, which starred a variety of '80s icons, such as Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet,...

The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin (2024)

Screambox Hidden Gems – 5 Horror Movies to Stream Tonight Including ‘Auntie Lee’s Meat Pies’
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

Pool Party Massacre

Summer is well underway, and if you’ve already exhausted all the seasonal classics, Pool Party Massacre can fill the void with a comedic send-up to ’80s slashers like Slumber Party Massacre and Sleepaway Camp (both also on Screambox). Written and directed by Drew Marvick, the 2017 low-budget indie embraces the era with 80 minutes of over-the-top characters, campy performances, and cheesy practical effects.

The titular party isn’t very festive; it’s more like a small gathering of vapid, Real Housewives rejects that barely tolerate one another while lounging by the pool. One by one, a character excuses themselves — including, in one instance,...

‘Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever’ Turns 40: Michael Jackson, Diana Ross …
Image
Do you remember what you were doing the evening of May 16, 1983? Well, you may have been one of the 47 million people tuned into NBC’s landmark special “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever.”

It was the star-studded celebration hosted by Emmy nominee Richard Pryor which saw Michael Jackson reuniting with his brothers for a medley of their Jackson 5 hits including “I Want You Back,” “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There.”

But it was Jackson’s solo performance of his blockbuster No. 1 hit “Billie Jean” from his breakthrough album “Thriller” which galvanized the audience. It was an electrifying turn where he introduced the fedora, black sequin jacket and glove and his momentous moonwalk routine during the bridge of the song, all of which became his trademarks when performing “Billie Jean.” The New York Times described the routine as “astonishing. He is clearly the heir apparent to the dazzling androgyny...

Slumberland Trailer: Jason Momoa Takes Little Nemo On A Magical Journey
Image
Sometimes the real world can be terribly boring, but in the new Netflix movie "Slumberland," young Nemo's (Marlow Barkley) dreams are a delightful escape from her daily drudgery. The poor girl's an orphan, you see, and she wants to traverse the dreamlands to find a way to bring her father (Kyle Chandler) back. Along the way she will be helped by her father's old business partner, a horned dream creature named Flip, played by the always charming "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa. Flip looks sort of like if Mr. Tumnus rode a motorcycle and listened to Adam Ant, which means he's basically the coolest dream-buddy you could ask for. She also has a stuffed plush pig that comes to life, though he's a little more rough-and-tumble than that Piglet fella.

The trailer for "Slumberland" has arrived, and it gives fans a better idea of what to expect from this high-flying family adventure.

‘Dracula: The Original Living Vampire’ Review
Image
Stars: Christine Prouty, Stuart Packer, Ryan Woodcock, India Lillie Davies, Jake Herbert, Michael Ironside | Written by Michael Varrati | Directed by Maximilian Elfeldt

It’s interesting to see that the classic monsters of yesteryear, the kings of horror storytelling – Dracula, the Mummy, the Wolfman – are all returning to the [small] screen in new and different takes on the existing mythos. Us Brits had a go with films like The Mummy Reborn and its sequel and the more recent Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing; both made on a low budget by indie filmmakers. Now it’s the turn of American indie king’s The Asylum to have a crack at a legendary horror icon with Dracula: The Original Living Vampire – a film whose title would suggest was Supposed to be a cash-in on the Sony/Marvel film Morbius… after all, in the comics Morbius if dubbed “The Living Vampire” too!

But this is definitely no Morbius.

Malcolm Marmorstein Dies: ‘Pete’s Dragon’, ‘Dark Shadows’ Writer Was 92
Image
Malcolm Marmorstein, screenwriter of the 1970s Disney hits Pete’s Dragon and Return from Witch Mountain and a decade earlier was a key element of the Dark Shadows writing staff when ABC’s gothic soap opera famously introduced vampire character Barnabas Collins, died Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 92.

The cause of death was cancer, his stepdaughter Romy Fleming told Deadline.

A New Jersey native, Marmorstein began his career as a stagehand and stage manager on Broadway, working on such iconic productions as A Streetcar Named Desire with Marlon Brando and Damn Yankees with Gwen Verden.

Before moving to Los Angeles in 1967, Marmorstein began writing for the New York-based soap The Doctors, where he was head writer before being hired away by Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis in late 1966. During Marmorstein’s early tenure on what was then a failing Jane Eyre-style melodrama, Curtis and his small writing staff began...

L.A.’s Greek Theatre Cancels 2020 Season Over Coronavirus
Image
Folks who were clinging to hope of seeing a concert at the Greek Theatre this summer are succumbing to reality. The beloved outdoor amphitheater in Los Angeles has pulled the plug on its 2020 season as the coronavirus pandemic plays out.

It’s the first time in the Greek’s 90-year history that it has scrapped a season.

“Although we had hoped to celebrate our 90th anniversary season of providing live entertainment for the citizens of Los Angeles, we feel it is the right, responsible and safe thing for fans, artists, staff and our Griffith Park community to put a pause on live, large crowd events until 2021,” said AP Diaz, executive officer and chief of staff of L.A.’s Department of Recreation and Parks, which owns the celebrated facility.

Among the big-name acts scheduled to hit the Greek this year were Alicia Keys, John Legend, Smokey Robinson, David Gray, Jon Bonamassa,...

Cherie Currie at an event for Les Runaways (2010)
Josie Cotton Talks About Great Songs From Bad Films
Cherie Currie at an event for Les Runaways (2010)
Generation C is being invaded by the B-Girls. 80s cult singer Josie Cotton, best known for blurring the angst of both liberals and conservatives with “Johnny Are You Queer?,” sees the science fiction claustrophobia arising from the coronavirus pandemic and wants to help. Cotton joined the Minutemen’s Mike Watt, the Runaways’ Cherie Currie, and Eddie Spaghetti on the song “Flatten the Curve,” to benefit the Jubilee Consortium and the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. Everyone else, she advises to cuddle up with a bad movie. Cotton ventured beyond the valley of the dolls in a “so-bad-they’re-good” movie hunt to accompany this real life B-Movie scenario and re-released Invasion of the B-Girls.

The album title is a twist on the Denis Sanders’ 1973 film Invasion of the Bee Girls, where giant killer bees masquerade as sexy women scientists who kill men for their blood during sex. The New Wave pioneer originally...

Linda McCartney’s Heart of the Country
Before she married a Beatle, Linda McCartney was renowned photographer Linda Eastman. She was the first woman to shoot a cover for Rolling Stone — of Eric Clapton — and photographed icons like Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan (and, yeah, the Beatles).

From the 1970s until her death in 1998 at 56 from breast cancer, Linda turned her camera to her home life. The new book Linda McCartney: The Polaroid Diaries features intimate snapshots of the McCartneys, many of which were shot at their farm in Cambeltown, Scotland. “She would just see things,” Paul...

What We Do in the Shadows Episode 6 Review: Baron's Night Out
Vampires show off Staten Island's nightlife in What We Do in the Shadows' "Baron's Night Out."

Culture

This What We Do in the Shadows review contains spoilers.

What We Do in the Shadows Episode 6

What We Do in the Shadows, episode 6, "Baron's Night Out," is the episode I was waiting for. It breaks the taboo of killing a member of the film crew, allows real peril to enter the series and finally unleashes Baron Afanas (Doug Jones) in all his inglorious flesh.

Afanas is a great character who has been kept on ice. He represents the real old world vampire of Nosferatu in the modern world. His approach to everything is anti-stealth. He offers no quarter and no one is safe. He gets very loud and boisterous and vampiry, drinking public urinators, doing shots direct from the tap of a carotid artery, and being an all-around over-the-top bloodsucker.

Just because...

‘Punk Lust’: How Sexuality Fueled a Musical Revolution
Richard Hell is known for many things — his short-lived stint in Television, his success with the Voidoids, his long career as a downtown poet. But maybe best of all, he’s known as the handsome lothario of the 1970s NYC punk scene. Yet when cultural historian Carlo McCormick asked Hell about the connection between punk and sexuality, Hell told him that wasn’t the point. “I remember Richard Hell saying to me, ‘Well Carlo, punk wasn’t really about sex,'” McCormick says with a smile in a gallery at...

An Artist's Eyes review – touching portrait of a rock'n'roll painter
In an affecting documentary, veteran director Jack Bond sketches Chris Moon’s personal struggles – and his startling way of creating art

Over his eight decades, director Jack Bond has accumulated one of the most cultured and quietly cultish filmographies in British cinema, having signed off on 1979’s avant-garde sci-fi Anti-Clock (rediscovered on the BFI’s Flipside label), the ripe-for-revival Pet Shop Boys curio It Couldn’t Happen Here (1987) and Adam Ant study The Blueblack Hussar (2014).

This profile of punkish Essex-based painter Chris Moon opens with a coup de cinéma to rank alongside anything in those defining art movies La Belle Noiseuse or The Quince Tree Sun: 10 minutes in which Moon, fag in mouth, daubs a jet-black canvas with coloured streaks that get stripped back to reveal new shapes and shades.

Phil Collins in Frère des ours (2003)
Phil Collins Talks New Box Set, Comeback Tour and the State of His Health
Phil Collins in Frère des ours (2003)
There was no harder-working rock star in the 1980s than Phil Collins. His solo career exploded in January of 1981 with the release of his debut single “In the Air Tonight,” the first of many massive hits he’d score throughout the decade. He also continued to record and tour heavily with Genesis and even established a career as an actor with a starring role in the 1988 movie Buster. Somehow, in the midst of all that, he also made himself available as a producer and drummer for an enormous cross-section of recording acts,...

Prince and Apollonia Kotero in Purple Rain (1984)
10 Purple Rain Facts You Never Knew
Prince and Apollonia Kotero in Purple Rain (1984)
Purple Rain pulled in ten times its budget, earned an Oscar for Best Original Song Score, and boasted a soundtrack that spent 24 weeks at Number 1. So let's purify ourselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka and pay tribute to the Purple One. Here we'll take a look at 10 things you never knew about Purple Rain.

Purple Dreams

After a string of albums culminated in breakthrough success with 1999, multitalented Minnesota multi-instrumentalist Prince tasked his managers with getting him a movie. The budget was small, the studio once suggested John Travolta should star, but somehow, it all came together. William Blinn, executive producer of TV's Fame, penned the first draft, which he called Dreams. A recent USC film school grad with no feature film directorial experience, Albert Magnoli went on a late night drive with Prince and convinced him he was the man for the job. Magnoli reworked the script.

Competition: Win ‘A Ghost Story’ on Blu-ray
To celebrate the release of A Ghost Story – available on DVD and Blu-ray 15th January 2018 – we are giving away a copy on Blu-ray.

Academy Award winner Casey Affleck and Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara star in this critically praised meditation on love and grief from acclaimed director David Lowery.

Casey Affleck follows up his Best Actor Oscar win last year with an extraordinary performance that will surely haunt next season’s awards ceremonies. Affleck stars alongside Rooney Mara, twice Oscar nominated for her roles in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Carol. There is a wonderful poignancy between the pair, who, torn apart by grief, must come to terms with the implications of their mortality.

Unforgettable and ambitious, like modern art house classics Personal Shopper and Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson, A Ghost Story is a film that delves deep into the human psyche to explore what it means to exist,...

Horrible Histories: the 15 greatest songs
Catherine Pearson Nov 20, 2017

With reports of a Horrible Histories feature film in development, we salute the genius songs of a magnificent show...

Ah, Horrible Histories. The show that brings all the slapstick humour and wordplay of Blackadder and Monty Python to a young audience. It’s a rare and marvellously British televisual feast (points for citing the reference, there): a bunch of hugely talented actors charging around in historical outfits, singing songs and starring in genius pop culture-inspired spoofs to deliver the darker side of history to school children.

Dynasty: revisiting an 80s soap cheese-fest
Catherine Pearson Oct 11, 2017

With the remake of the 1980s soap opera arriving today, what better time to take a nostalgia-filled lookback at Dynasty?

Cast your mind back, if you can, to the year of 1981. Bucks Fizz, Adam and the Ants and Soft Cell were storming the charts, Only Fools And Horses aired its first series on BBC One and Gregory’s Girl was playing in a cinema near you. Meanwhile, stateside, ABC had cooked up a suitably glamorous and scandalous competitor to Dallas, the CBS drama packed full of Stetsons and suspense. The world may have recently discovered who shot J.R., but there was still plenty of room for the Carringtons.

Enter Dynasty, a show based around the business and family of oil tycoon Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) whose recent marriage to his former secretary Krystle (Linda Evans) was making waves within the family mansion. With the Colby family...

Exploring the music of Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy
Mark Harrison Jul 3, 2017

Music is a vital part of Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End. We take a look in more detail right here...

This feature contains major spoilers for Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End.

Edgar Wright's films are often likened to musicals, with his precise use of editing and shot choices giving us some of the most stylish comedy films of the century. His latest, Baby Driver, isn't a comedy per se, but “a musical with car chases”, or “An American In Paris on wheels and crack smoke”, as an elated Guillermo del Toro described it on Twitter.

Centring around Ansel Elgort's Baby, a getaway driver who does his best work while listening to a personal soundtrack, it seems like the film Wright was born to make. He had the idea for the film after making his first feature,...

Musings on New Romantic on the New Frontier
Of all the youth subcultures New Romantic is the most arbitrary. It began in the London night club Blitz in 1979. It was a predominantly gay club that played a mixture of electronic pop and disco. The attitude of the patrons was that unlike punk it was important that you did 'something'. Such as write poems, write songs or (because of the proximity of the pre-eminent Fashion College; St Martin's) design clothes. At some point in the year the theatrical costumier (who supplied all the theatres in London) Charles Fox had the crashdown sale of it's long history. Consequently that week Blitz patrons came dressed in a mix of retro styles that spanned a thousand years. Chain mail, doublet and hose, ruffs and uniforms loyal to every flag. In one night New Romantic was born.

Blitz had been Billys, it became Satellites and I believe by the late '80s was called Shroom.
