Ridley Scott's production company, Scott Free Productions, has announced its desire to adapt more of the legendary director's movies into television shows in the future. Through Scott Free, Ridley Scott has been working as an executive producer for two upcoming adaptations of some of Scott's best films. Those shows, Alien: Earth and Blade Runner 2099, however, may be just the first.
Per Variety, Scott Free chief creative officer David W. Zucker said the production company was going to look at adapting other movies made by Ridley and Tony Scott. Zucker said that the TV landscape has changed enough, in terms of budgets and scope, that adapting larger-than-life movies into shows according to Scott Free's vision is finally viable.
"[W]e are looking at a number of different [Ridley and Tony Scott movie titles] right now, and the point of entry is really: ‘What is its reason to be?’ because while it’s certainly [the case that] IP is ruling the day,...

The Naked Gun has been absolutely killing it in the marketing department. Both trailers completely turned skeptics into supporters, while the posters have had visual gags that tease just how over-the-top ridiculous. First it was Liam Neeson doing a split, then it was Neeson and Pamela Anderson wrapping all of their arms around each other. Now, we have the Naked Gun latest poster, which sees Neeson making sure his fingerprints get all over his gun.
The latest Naked gun poster shows Liam Neeson’s Lt. Frank Drebin, Jr. equipped with his pistol, his fingers – all eight of them – gripping it tight. Accompanying the image is a one sheet-specific tagline: “No AI was used in the making of this poster”. This is a perfect companion to the Naked Gun poster one with Anderson, which featured just as many hands between the two characters (Anderson plays Beth opposite Neeson). It’s also...

A brand-new Naked Gun movie is on the way, and this time Liam Neeson is stepping into the world of silly crime-fighting as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. The film is set to come out in U.S. theaters on August 1, 2025, and it promises a mix of throwback jokes and new characters that aim to bring back the goofy fun of the original films.
The director is Akiva Schaffer, who also co-wrote the script along with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. According to Paramount Pictures, this will be the fourth movie in the series, following 1994’s Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult.
Instead of a reboot, it’s being called a legacy sequel, meaning it continues the story but with a new generation. Neeson plays the son of Leslie Nielsen’s iconic detective character.

The film is based on the character portrayed by Nielsen in the TV series "Police Squad!" (1982).

Akiva Schaffer’s reboot of The Naked Gun has been winning over a lot of skeptical fans with its latest trailer — but the director of the original film has yet to be convinced.
David Zucker, who co-directed classics such as Airplane! and Top Secret!, has been very critical of the new movie, recently telling Fox News that “just being a fan” doesn’t qualify the filmmakers to take on the goofy franchise.
Part of Zucker’s dissatisfaction with the new project seemingly stems from the fact that Paramount previously turned down his pitches for potential franchise continuations. In a new interview with Film Threat, Zucker confirmed that one rejected sequel idea was a spy movie spoof called Naked: Impossible, which had been preceded by a more straightforward continuation dubbed Naked Gun 4: Nordberg Did It.

The 1970s and 1980s were the golden age of the spoof. Mel Brooks was in peak send-up shape between 1974 and 1977 with the box office smashes "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein," and "High Anxiety," while David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker (aka Zaz) perfected the form with gag-a-second classics like "Kentucky Fried Movie," "Airplane!," "Police Squad!," and "Top Secret!" Of course, when studios noticed moviegoers had an appetite for such silliness, they also sought to cash in with decidedly lesser efforts like "The Big Bus," "Wholly Moses!," and "Spaceship" (aka "The Creature Wasn't Nice").
The trick to nailing the spoof has generally been to take a popular genre that's starting to verge on self-parody (like the Western or disaster movie) and amplify the most ridiculous tropes to an uproariously silly degree. The more humorless the genre, the better. Though there are big laughs to be found in the first three "Scary Movie" films,...

Now that the hype for the next installment in The Naked Gun series – starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin, Jr. – is real, we do all have to remember the time when we were all skeptical. Face it, without Leslie Nielsen and any of Zaz (Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers) at play, what good could possibly come of it? Really, couldn’t someone from the original writing team have had a hand in the movie? As it turns out, David Zucker says he was excluded entirely from the process of The Naked Gun.
For a little background here, Zucker was previously quoted as saying he did in fact get the script for The Naked Gun delivered to him, noting, “I read the script, and I politely told them I wasn’t going to put my name on it. They wanted nothing from me except my name.” With The Naked Gun...

Mel Brooks, who gave us classics like Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs and Blazing Saddles, was obviously a pioneer in the world of movie spoofs. Even before he directed a single film, Brooks parodied the art house animation world when he came up with the concept for the Oscar-winning short The Critic.

One might assume that Brooks is therefore a fan of 1980’s Airplane!, one of the most beloved big-screen spoofs of all-time. And while he did commend David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker’s approach to humor, that praise came with a big caveat.
Back in 1981, Brooks sat for an interview with The New York Times to discuss his newest movie A History of the World, Part I. Today, the anthology comedy is widely beloved, and even inspired the recent pseudo-sequel streaming series History of the World, Part II, but when it was first released a number of critics went after Brooks’ film,...

If you had to choose between watching Liam Neeson’s upcoming movie, The Naked Gun, and the internet’s most infamous video, 2 Girls 1 Cup, most would choose the Liam Neeson film.
Well, of course, the comparison between the two is a little absurd, but this comparison was made by David Zucker, who was the original director of the Naked Gun films back in the 1980s and 90s. According to Zucker, some things aren’t meant to be seen by people, and Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun just so happens to be one of them.

The trailer for the Naked Gun reboot starring Liam Neeson went online this morning, and its brand of off-the-wall parody is a welcome return for fans of the original series of films, starring the coincidentally similarly named Leslie Nielsen.
But the legacy of Frank Drebin goes even further back than the original 1988 feature — to a prematurely canceled television show, Police Squad!
Criminally underseen at the time, the series was subsequently reclaimed by fans of the first three Naked Gun movies, which were all successful in their theatrical releases and eventually sparked a re-airing of the series in the late '80s.
Even so, Police Squad! became a sort of trivia fact for people to discover after they had seen a Naked Gun movie (or 2 1/2) , but what sometimes gets forgotten is that while television audiences may not have appreciated the brand of goofiness signature to creators David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker at the time,...

The trailer for the Naked Gun reboot, starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, has been revealed.
Arriving in theaters on August 1st, The Naked Gun stars Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., a lieutenant in the LAPD and the son of original Naked Gun protagonist Frank Drebin (famously played by Leslie Neilsen). He works on the force alongside Captain Ed Hocken Jr. (Paul Walter Hauser) and is regularly dispatched around the city to stop crime and prevent disasters; though in typical Naked Gun fashion, Drebin Jr. is one comedic gag away from disaster at all times.

Fans of The Naked Gun are about to have a good year with the release of the full trailer for the new movie.
Akiva Schaffer helms the reboot feature that Paramount releases in theaters Aug. 1. Liam Neeson stars as Lt. Get ready to rock out with your Glock out. Liam Neeson's Frank Drebin Jr. is on the case in the first gag-filled trailer for The Naked Gun. The reboot of the slapstick comedy series will hit theaters on August 1, 2025. In the trailer, Drebin Jr. is the son of the franchise's original protagonist, Frank Drebin Sr., and he's just as violent, accident-prone, and generally ridiculous as his predecessor. Now, he's on the trail of a murderer, thanks to femme fatale Pamela Anderson, but that plot's just an excuse for a series of slapstick gags in the goofball spirit of the franchise.
As he crusades for justice, Drebin pokes fun at Neeson's tough-guy image, beating a man with his own severed arms, pulling his sidearm to get into a bathroom, and interrogating a suspect who did twenty years for "man's laughter." But his new case is no joke: if Drebin can't...

Comedy, of course, is subjective. There's no one film that's going to be universally funny to every human being, as comedy is based on social mores, history, politics, and a slew of other cultural factors that mutate quickly and differ from neighborhood to neighborhood. Indeed, what one found funny in 2005 may not be as funny in 2025, so time also plays a factor. And while certain comedies have lasted for centuries -- Shakespeare and Moliere are still being performed to this day -- some comedies from just a few decades ago are already dated. Heck, sometimes the time of day can be a factor. A midnight movie may be funnier than a Sunday matinée of the same flick.
But there is an objective, scientific way to gauge the effects comedy has on us: our laughter. If a film makes us laugh out loud repeatedly, then we can take measurements, right? And...

I’ve been writing a lot lately about my lengthy Zoom with The Naked Gun! and Airplane! creator David Zucker. Our interview was ostensibly set up to discuss his upcoming web series MasterCrash, a more-sincere-than-usual sendup of MasterClass, and to provide space for him to gripe about being left out of Seth MacFarlane and Akiva Schaffer’s new Naked Gun movie — a classic win-win media & PR collab! The residual impact has been how much I’ve since thought about parody, and how not everybody knows how to do it right.
Time will tell if MacFarlane and Schaffer’s take starring Liam Neeson as the new Lt. Frank Drebin, son of the old one (Leslie Nielsen), strikes the right tone. Considering the IP and talent attached — and even factoring in the talent not attached — Naked Gun (August 1, 2025) has a shot. When the great Leslie Nielsen made the media rounds in 1996, promoting his James Bond spoof, Spy Hard, everyone wanted to know one thing. Was he shocked when O.J. Simpson was arrested for murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and Ron Goldman, and did he think he was guilty? Ever the Canadian gent, Nielsen retired the ever-present fart machine he enjoyed using in interviews, and tried to give a thoughtful answer. Basically, he said that the Oj he knew on set from the three Naked Gun movies they did together never gave him an inkling that he would be capable of murder, although, to read between the lines of his answer, it was clear Nielsen likely had serious doubts as to his innocence.
Indeed, when The Naked Gun 33 1/3rd came out on March 18th 1994, no one who went to see it – and I was one of them – would have ever thought that three months later,...

Barbara Billingsley, the actress who played mom June Cleaver on Leave It to Beaver, wasn’t nearly as generous with the compliments as Eddie Haskell, the neighborhood suck-up who was always trying to get in her good graces. Once she got a load of Roseanne, another family sitcom that became popular 30 years after her own, she complained to a newspaper about “this big, sloppy woman.”
“You know, the first time I saw Roseanne, I thought, ‘Ugh! I hate the messy house,’” she told Newark’s Star-Ledger, as reported by MeTV. It’s unclear whether Billingsley’s “big, sloppy woman” dig referred to the way the character kept her home or the sitcom star’s personal appearance.
The Conner house certainly looked nothing like the immaculate Cleaver abode. June was famous for vacuuming in high heels and pearls, an ensemble that Roseanne never pulled off on her show. Billingsley later revealed...

Sometimes a torch is tough to pass up, especially when your name is so tied to it. But David Zucker made the attempt to lend a hand at sprucing up the script for the upcoming sequel The Naked Gun. After he was turned away, he was offered nothing more than a producer credit. This was all more than a decade ago — and Zucker is still miffed that there’s even another Naked Gun hitting the streets.
David Zucker — who co-wrote the original Naked Gun trilogy and directed the first two (not to mention co-creating the original Police Squad! series) recalled that those moving forward without him may have wanted nothing to do with him at his age. “I read the script, and I politely told them I wasn’t going to put my name on it. Fresh off acclaim for her electrifying turn in The Last Showgirl, Pamela Anderson takes a sharp comedic turn in her next role: The Naked Gun. The actress spoke with Entertainment Weekly to tease her character, who appears to be a classic femme fatale. The character is named Beth, and she comes to the Police Squad for help after her brother is murdered.
EW also dropped the first look at Pamela Anderson in The Naked Gun, which you can check out below.
Anderson stars opposite Liam Neeson, who plays Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s character. She loved working with Neeson, saying their “chemistry was clear from the start. We have the utmost respect for one another.” She went on to call Neeson “mysterious,” “inspiring,” and a “true gentleman,” and she said that working with him was “electric in a way.“

Airplane! is generally considered to be one of the greatest movie comedies of all-time. The sequel, which introduced William Shatner and a bomb-wielding Sonny Bono to the franchise, not so much.

The steep drop in quality can be explained by the fact that Airplane II: The Sequel was helmed by Canadian comedy writer Ken Finkleman, and not the original filmmaking team of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker.
Well, it turns out that Zaz did offer to helm a follow-up to Airplane!, but their plans were torpedoed by legendary director and wine magnate Francis Ford Coppola.
David Zucker recently sat for an interview with right-wing YouTuber, and star of the “South Park of X,” Dave Rubin. Zucker discussed how Zaz was approached by Paramount to make Airplane II, and they even put together a pitch that would have picked up right after the events of the original film.

One of this year’s most highly-anticipated summer movies is the reboot of The Naked Gun, starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin’s son, who was canonically born in 1994. While the recently-released teaser trailer didn’t address Frank Jr.’s age, it did feature Neeson brutally murdering a gang of crooks, Taken-style, followed by an admittedly pretty funny O.J. joke.
One person who definitely isn’t looking forward to the new movie is David Zucker. The director and co-writer of the original Naked Gun told TMZ that the teaser trailer called to mind a notoriously revolting X-rated video, because he “can’t unsee it.” And he was somehow even harsher during a recent interview with Fox News.
Zucker noted that director Akiva Schaffer and producer Seth MacFarlane seem very “sincere,” about their love of The Naked Gun and “aren’t bad people.” But he’s clearly annoyed that they...

1988’s The Naked Gun is making a comeback, but will it capture the same magic as the original? Most comedies now feel the need to sneak in a life lesson, and silliness, wordplay, or casual gags have largely been pushed aside. The Naked Gun, however, worked because it didn’t particularly care too much about those things. It just wanted to be funny.
With Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson stepping into the franchise as fresh faces, the 2025 Naked Gun reboot is officially set to hit theaters on August 1, 2025. Originally scheduled for July 18, 2025, the release date was shifted by a couple of weeks, likely to accommodate studio scheduling conflicts, including the rescheduling of Vicious, another Paramount project. Here’s everything we know so far about the new Naked Gun.

Andor, the Star Wars show that doesn’t feature an adorable, breakfast cereal-friendly alien toddler, returns for its second season this week. But the acclaimed series wouldn’t exist without the 2016 prequel Rogue One, which first introduced audiences to Rebel hero Cassian Andor.
Oddly enough, a key character in that movie was only made possible thanks to a 41-year-old comedy that featured both an underwater bar fight and Academy Award winner Omar Sharif picking up a pile of dog shit: Top Secret!.
Set shortly before the events of the first Star Wars movie, Rogue One opted to bring back the villainous Imperial leader Grand Moff Tarkin, played by Peter Cushing. Instead of simply hiring another actor to play the role, Lucasfilm opted to use state-of-the-art computer technology to recreate the late Cushing’s face on top of another performer’s body, arguably giving Tarkin more of a “taxidermied video game Npc” vibe,...

"Whatever it is you girls do, I'm sure it's nice and innocent." The Asylum has a brand new comedy B-movie out in theaters right now to watch. It's called Airplane 2025, and obviously it's a 2025 spoof-of-a-spoof comedy riff on the classic Airplane! movie from 1980. The original Airplane!, starring Leslie Nielsen and directed by Jim Abrahams & David Zucker & Jerry Zucker, is an all-timer classic that was already a disaster movie spoof making fun of many of the 70s disaster movies. This new 2025 version focuses more on the sex: A group of repressed college co-eds decides to join the sexual revolution... at 30,000 feet. This stars Tom Arnold, Tania Fox, Cody Renee Cameron, Landon Tavernier, Hannah Hueston, and many other unknown actors you won't recognize. Airplane 2025 is playing in select theaters now and is also out on VOD (as of 4/20 of course) to watch at home for anyone who wants to see...

Image Source: Paramount Pictures Over four decades later, Airplane! still flies high as one of the funniest movies of all time. It’s like comedy gold trapped in a time capsule, rediscovered again and again by each new generation. While plenty of filmmakers have attempted to mimic its comedic brilliance, nothing has quite matched the sharp, rapid-fire humor of the original masterpiece. David Zucker, one of the comedic geniuses behind Airplane! and The Naked Gun series, has shared with us what keeps Airplane! so timeless. According to him, it’s not just the endless stream of jokes (though there are plenty!). It’s the deadpan delivery, the clever absurdity, and the non-stop pacing that make it feel as fresh today as it did back then. When days ago Liam Neeson took off his pants and revealed a set of ladies' underwear in the trailer for The Naked Gun, fans got a glimpse at what could be coming in the remake of the beloved comedy classic. They are excited, but others remain skeptical about bringing back the iconic franchise. Among those, there's David Zucker, the director of the first two Naked Gun movies and part of the creative trio of writers behind parody classics like Top Secret! and Airplane! Zucker has previously stated his opinion about the upcoming reboot, but now he's sharing his scorn for Neeson's casting and the studio's decision to not consult any of them for the remake.

If you were to compile a list of the best parody movies ever made, you would be hard pressed to find one that doesn't include "The Naked Gun" on it. The hilarious riff on procedural cop shows initially started out as "Police Squad!," a hilarious six-episode television comedy series from David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker whose only crime was being ahead of its time. Although the triage had no such luck making it play to audiences on the small screen, the short-lived series proved to be incredibly successful in movie theaters in the form of 1988's "The Naked Gun," which brought back Leslie Nielsen to reprise his role as the bumbling Detective Lt. Frank Drebin.
The David Zucker-directed film not only jumpstarted Nielsen's comedy career after his memorable role in "Airplane!," but it also led to two sequels: "The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear...

Movie stardom rarely occurs overnight. Yes, there is typically a film where the star "arrives," but this performance usually comes after a series of supporting turns in movies or TV shows where they've swiped a scene or two. Eddie Murphy rocketed to fame via "48 Hrs.," but this came as no surprise to anyone who'd been watching him kill it on "Saturday Night Live." It might've felt like Peter O'Toole exploded out of nowhere in "Lawrence of Arabia," but his portrayal of a too-credulous guard in "The Day They Robbed the Bank of England" put moviegoers on notice that he was a special talent. And Julia Roberts popped in ensemble films like "Satisfaction" and "Mystic Pizza" before becoming America's sweetheart in "Pretty Woman."

Let’s be honest, friends—comedy doesn’t get much better than Leslie Nielsen with a badge and a straight face. The Naked Gun franchise isn’t just funny; it’s the kind of funny that has you pausing the movie because you’re laughing too hard to catch the next joke.
Nielsen’s portrayal of Lieutenant Frank Drebin redefined parody cinema forever, creating a blueprint for absurdist humor that countless films have tried (and mostly failed) to replicate.

While most legacy sequels to beloved movies find a way to incorporate original cast members, that was unlikely to happen in Akiva Schaffer’s reboot of The Naked Gun.
Leslie Nielsen, who played Lt. Frank Drebin, passed away in 2010. George Kennedy, aka Captain Ed Hocken, died in 2016. And since Priscilla Presley has publicly claimed that she would turn down any invitations to return to the franchise, that really only left O.J. Simpson.
Although he died shortly before filming began, there was seemingly no attempt to involve Simpson in the project, for obvious reasons. But that doesn’t mean that the movie won’t include some references to the notorious accused murderer.
The first teaser trailer for 2025’s The Naked Gun just dropped. It finds Liam Neeson’s Frank Drebin (the son of Nielson’s character) brutalizing a gang of bank robbers while improbably dressed as a schoolgirl, complete with a Mission: Impossible-style rubber mask.

Val Kilmer, the actor famous for taking on Tom Cruise in Top Gun, the Riddler in Batman Forever and Johnny Ringo in Tombstone, passed away on Tuesday at age 65. But before Kilmer cemented his reputation as a powerful dramatic actor, he kicked off his career with some of the funniest performances of the 1980s.
Kilmer made his film debut in Top Secret!, the Zucker brothers’ criminally underrated follow-up to Airplane!. The cast of "Star Trek: The Original Series" had an endearing ability to laugh at themselves. It wasn't just about the sense of levity that often existed on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise; it was the actors' willingness to be goofy and play broadly for laughs.
