Why Once Upon A Time Introduced Two Different Cinderellas
Image
Once Upon a Time was a host for many classic stories and characters over its seven-season run, but some of these characters were repeated and re-used throughout the series, such as Rapunzel, Jack, and Hansel and Gretel. During its run, the show also introduced two different variations of Cinderella. The first variation is played by Jessy Schram and appears in four episodes across the first six seasons of the show. She was a more stereotypical version of the princess, with the blue dress, the blonde hair, the big ball and the glass slippers.

The second variation of Cinderella (Dania Ramirez) was written as the new main princess for Once Upon A Time's final season, which was a soft reboot. She is a lot more hardcore, demonstrating strong skills in fighting and self-defense. In her first scene, she punches Henry (Andrew J. West) in the face and steals his motorcycle. She...

Body Snatchers | Why Abel Ferrara’s 1993 sci-fi horror deserves a second look
Image
Abel Ferrara’s sci-fi horror Body Snatchers was largely overlooked in 1993, but it’s aged remarkably well in the decades since.

Movie-goers and film scholars have argued for decades over which side of the political divide director Don Siegel and his collaborators fell on when they made Invasion Of The Body Snatchers at the height of the Cold War in 1956. Did it tap into contemporary fears of an insidious communist takeover, or was it a Crucible-like jab at McCarthyist witch hunts?

Siegel always maintained that he didn’t have politics in mind when he made the film, adapted from author Jack Finney’s novel, The Body Snatchers; he simply intended it to be an entertaining, disturbing thrill ride. And what a thrill-ride it is: starring Kevin McCarthy as a small-town doctor who’s slow to realise his patients – and gradually the entire town – is being replaced by soulless pod people – it’s a tense,...

10 Cheesiest '90s Movies, Ranked
Image
Thankfully, not all movies are Oscar bait and sometimes the best form of escapism is turning on a movie that doesnt require too much attention or analysis. Cheesy movies with clich love stories, nonsensical plots and one-dimensional characters arent always box office gold, but they can become cult classics.

Cheesy movies dont need A-list stars like Jennifer Lawrence or Leonardo DiCaprio, although they can be places to spot such stars before they become household names. All a good cheesy movie needs is a ridiculous story, silly humor, and a few memorable lines for audiences to appreciate the camp, even decades later.

Body Snatchers (1993) – The Test of Time
Image
There are some stories in the history of film that end up being repeated over and over again. Some of these are just simple categories like vampire, werewolf, and zombie films. Some of them get a little more granular and specific like the story of Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. Finally, we can get even more granular and look at a specific title that has made the rounds a few times. I Am Legend by the wonderful and prolific Richard Matheson was made into three different movies with Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and finally I Am Legend. While King Kong and Phantom of the Opera probably have the most, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has the most consistent offerings. The 2007 iteration was a bust but the other 3 are all incredibly solid. With the 90s version turning 30 we thought it was worth seeing if it was a generic...

Image
Bruce Campbell is ready for a Burn Notice spinoff. The actor, who starred as retired covert operative and former Navy Seal Sam Axe in all seven seasons of the USA Network series, recently shared that he is down to appear in a new project set in the universe.

"Give me a buzz, man," said Campbell while speaking to Collider at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. "Heck yeah, Sam Axe, in a second." While there are currently no official plans for a Burn Notice sequel, the original series did end on a rather open-ended note regarding Axes next moves, leaving plenty of room for a potential spin-off. Campbell even shared what he believed his character would currently be up to, saying, "Sam [Axe] would be in Key Largo winning the Hemingway lookalike contest with a big beard because hes got nothing to do now. Grow a beard and imitate Hemingway."

The Horror Movies With the Most Remakes
Image
Some stories are simply too good to be contained within a single film, and that's especially true in the horror genre. Many film tales of terror have been remade, sometimes as a cash grab, but mostly because these classics are timeless. It doesn't always make sense to attempt rebooting an iconic movie, but often, a fresh take on a classic can be more original than a derivative new property.

They're some of the biggest and longest-running franchises, but horror films can wear out their welcome with seemingly endless, uninspired sequels. Sometimes a reboot is necessary to reignite the fans' passion and hopefully spawn a new franchise. Lots of horror movies have been remade, but the truly great ones have multiple reboots.

Related 10 Classic Horror Movies That Deserve A Reboot

Classic horror films like The Bride of Frankenstein and Rosemary's Baby are definitely iconic enough to get their own reboots.

Five Doppelganger Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
This week’s streaming picks will have you seeing double. Doppelgangers are inherently terrifying, or at the very least alarming, for a variety of reasons. In mythology, a doppelganger often acts as a foreboding harbinger of bad news or luck. On a biological level, there’s something unsettling about the discovery of an unrelated person or entity sharing your face.

Then there’s the matter of identity theft, something horror exploits when it comes to doppelgangers. It’s eerie enough to see what appears to be your clone in the wild, but it’s a whole new level of scary when they attempt to take over your entire existence as their own.

This week’s streaming picks highlight the perils of doppelgangers.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Scent Of A Woman's Director Contacted The CIA To Try To Refocus An Out-Of-Focus Shot
Image
Martin Brest's "Scent of a Woman" was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 1992. Powered by an emotionally raucous screenplay from the late, great Bo Goldman, it's probably best remembered 31 years later for the hoo-hahing performance showcase that earned Al Pacino the Best Actor Oscar he should've won for, take your pick, "The Godfather Part II," "Serpico" or "Dog Day Afternoon." This is unfair. The film does run a tad long, and concludes with a conventional stand-up-and-cheer monologue from Pacino, but the length is excusable because Brest gives his best moments, most of which arrive during the film's second act, an abundance of oxygen. He lets his actors explore, which was catnip for Pacino and a blessing for his 22-year-old co-star Chris O'Donnell.

Cast as a promising prep school student hired by a rich woman (Gabrielle Anwar) to babysit her blind, alcoholic Vietnam War vet uncle over Thanksgiving weekend,...

The Real Reason James Cameron Cast Kate Winslet In Titanic
Image
It’s hard to imagine James Cameron’s Titanic without Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead couple, and Winslet made sure she was cast in this massive project. One of James Cameron’s most ambitious and successful projects is the 1997 disaster drama movie Titanic, which took the real-life tragedy of the Rms Titanic to tell the fictional story of Jack Dawson (DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater (Winslet), two passengers from different social classes whose romance was doomed to tragedy.

Over the course of four days on board the ship, Jack and Rose met, fell in love, and defended their relationship from those who wanted to keep them apart, especially those close to Rose, as were her mother, Ruth (Frances Fisher), and Rose’s fiancé Cal Hockley (Billy Zane). Titanic became one of the most successful and praised movies in film history, and the performances of DiCaprio and Winslet...

Barry Sonnenfeld Turned Down Forrest Gump To Direct The Addams Family Sequel
Image
Upon reflection, there couldn't be two '90s Hollywood studio films that are more opposite than Barry Sonnenfeld's "Addams Family Values" and Robert Zemeckis' "Forrest Gump." Both released in the mid-1990s (although the novel "Forrest Gump" was released a decade before making it to the big screen), the two films might represent the ends of an anarchist spectrum. On the one hand, the Addams family is a creepy bunch of murderers who live in a strange haunted mansion, and who take delight in the misery of others. They live far out on the fringe and they love it. They spray blood on people, pour boiling oil on Christmas carolers, and, in the famous climax of "Values," kill off all the counselors at a summer camp.

"Forrest Gump," meanwhile, is a cube of American cornpone about the Rockwellian nature of old American institutions. "Forrest Gump" argues that the inside was the place to be,...

The Evolution of Al Pacino: From ‘The Godfather’ to ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ and ‘Hunters’ (Photos)
Al Pacino
From portraying a mob don and an AIDS-stricken attorney to a comic strip villain and a Nazi hunter, Al Pacino has done it all. In honor of his long and distinguished career (and his 80th birthday), we offer up this retrospect that showcases his expansive diversity.

N.Y.P.D (1968) • A then 28-year-old Pacino made his TV debut on this ABC police procedural plan the victim of a shooting.

Me, Natalie (1971) • Pacino had a small role in this film starring Patty Duke about a girl who struggles with her appearance.

The Panic in Needle Park (1971) • Pacino played a small-town crook leading a woman down a path of heroin addiction. His work in this film caught the eye of director Francis Ford Coppola

The Godfather (1971) • And then came “The Godfather” and his first Academy Award nomination. Need we say more?

Serpico (1973) • Pacino earned his second Oscar nomination playing New York City policeman Frank Serpico,...

L'Exorciste, la suite (1990)
Happy Friday, dear readers! While time might feel like a bit of a flat circle right now, the weekend is officially upon us once again, and I don’t know about you, but these days, movies are providing a very much-needed distraction. With that in mind, I thought I’d put together a list of horror and sci-fi movies that were released throughout the 1990s that you can currently stream for free on a variety of platforms like Vudu, Tubi TV, Crackle, Pluto TV, and IMDb TV.

I just figured we often spend a lot of time celebrating genre movies from the 1980s, so it was time to give the ’90s their due, and there are a lot of great movies from that era that you can currently watch for free via streaming.

Stay safe, stay healthy and happy streaming!

Once Upon a Time: Ending; No Season Eight for ABC TV Series
It's time to wish upon a star for a happy ending. The Once Upon a Time TV show will end after seven seasons on ABC. Last month, during TCA winter press tour, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey said she was "cautiously optimistic" about a season eight renewal. While no one is outright saying Once Upon a Time is cancelled, it is ending, and the network seems to have made the decision, not creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. An ABC fairy tale drama, the seventh season of Once Upon a Time stars original cast members Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle, and Colin O’Donoghue, alongside newcomers Andrew J. West, Gabrielle Anwar, Dania Ramirez, Alison Fernandez, and Mekia Cox. It is a reboot of the story fans watched during the series’ first six installments, which also featured Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, with Ginnifer Goodwin...

‘Once Upon a Time’ canceled: No fairy-tale ending after seven seasons on ABC
ABC is pulling the plug on “Once Upon a Time” after seven seasons. Co-creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis had tried to take the fantasy show in a new direction this year after losing most of the original cast. While hard-core fans followed “Ouat” from its traditional Sunday time slot to Friday, the audience was not large enough to merit renewal by the Alphabet network.

This reboot built on the season 6 two-hour finale, which had introduced two new characters including a young man who has lost hope and now lives as a recluse (Andrew J. West) and his daughter Lucy (Alison Fernandez) who has her own book of fairy tales. He was a grown-up version of Henry (Jared Gilmore), the boy whose search for his birth mother Emma (Jennifer Morrison) to the dismay of his adoptive mother Regina (Lana Parrilla) kicked off the series back in 2011.

Morrison only returned for...

Twelve Unsinkable Facts for Titanic’s 20th Anniversary
Twelve Unsinkable Facts for Titanic’s 20th AnniversaryTwelve Unsinkable Facts for Titanic’s 20th AnniversaryKurt Anthony12/19/2017 10:00:00 Am

“It’s been 84 years….”

Actually, it’s been 20 years! James Cameron’s record-breaking blockbuster Titanic celebrates its 20th anniversary today and we know you’re frozen with excitement.

A chilling tale of romantic disaster, Titanic combines the fictitious love story of Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) with the untimely fate of the R.M.S. Titanic, one of history’s most famous ships.

Originally an elaborate plan to obtain funding for deep-sea filming expeditions, Cameron has stated that he made Titanic because he wanted to dive to the real wreck. As the writer, director, co-producer, and co-editor of the film, Cameron ended up spending more time with the ship than its actual passengers.

Filmed on a production budget of $200M, Titanic was the most expensive movie ever made at the time.
