Hugh Jackman earned an Oscar nomination for his work as Jean Valjean in “Les Misérables,” but things didn’t go so well decades ago while belting out the musical’s “Stars” when he had to sing for the first time at an audition.
“I read first and I could tell it was going well,” Jackman said Saturday night during a performance of “An Evening With Hugh Jackman” at the Hollywood Bowl. “Then I sang and I cracked on the final note so spectacularly. Like it was the worst crack you could have ever imagined. Whatever excitement was on the panel, it just deflated immediately. I was about to run out, just humiliated.”
“But then the guy goes, ‘Whoa, hold on a second. Why did you sing that song?’” Jackman continued. “I said, ‘It’s the only thing I had music for. I’m sorry.’ And he said, ‘Well, you can throw that away.

The 23rd season of American Idol has ended. While the competition boiled down to Louisiana’s John Foster and Meridian’s Jamal Roberts, the latter took home the trophy. However, Foster gave a compelling performance during the grand finale, with a cover of John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads, and his original single.
Foster’s performance of his single Tell That Anger I Love Her impressed judges and audiences alike and was one of the highlights of the finale. The performance was special to Foster as the singer had based it on the death of his high school friend Maggie Dunn, who was killed in a car accident in 2022.

If there’s one singular moment that stands above all the gruesome opening catastrophes and over-the-top deaths in the Final Destination film series, it’s the logging truck and the deadly highway pile-up it caused in Final Destination 2.
The original Final Destination set the bar high with a harrowing plane explosion mid-air. Its direct follow-up, released in 2003 and set one year after the first film’s events, upped the ante in terror with a far more statistically probable catastrophe that hits closer to home. Director David R. Ellis and screenwriters Eric Bress & J. Mackye Gruber (The Butterfly Effect) expanded upon their predecessor’s elaborate kills as well as Death’s rules.
Armed with an almost entirely new cast and set of characters, Final Destination 2 unceremoniously kills off Final Destination’s protagonist and premonition wielder Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) off-screen between films, noted via newspaper clipping and details by the sole returning character,...

Lana Del Rey’s country era is here. Ahead of the upcoming release of a new country-tinged album, the pop star performed at Stagecoach on Friday night, unveiling several new songs and making a claim that countless country fans wish they could: that she “kissed Morgan Wallen.”
The moment happened during the second-to-last song of the night, a new composition titled “57.5”. At one point in the song, the arrangement came down and she told the crowd she would only say the next line only once, at which point she made the reveal. “I kissed Morgan Wallen,” she sang, more like a confession than a sung lyric.
In response, the audience roared with excitement, so much so that it almost drowned out Del Rey’s next few lines. Through the noise, though, she stood strong, pivoting to poking fun at Wallen with raised eyebrows and a comical, advice-giving sparkle in her eye.

When Jim Nabors found out that his Gomer Pyle character from The Andy Griffith Show was getting a spin-off in which the filling station attendant becomes a U.S. Marine, he researched how to act like a young recruit. “I started visiting Marine bases in Southern California,” Nabors told the Chicago Tribune, as reported by MeTV. “I studied training manuals as though the drill instructor were really looking over my shoulder.”
Getting advice from actual Marines makes sense. But Nabors also got some unexpected training from the guy who played Barney Fife, the deputy who carried a bullet in his pocket because he couldn’t be trusted with a loaded pistol. “I had to learn how to handle a rifle,” Nabors revealed. “You'll never guess who gave me pointers — Don Knotts, good old Barney Fife from the Griffith Show. Like Coca-Cola once did, Rocket Cos. tried to use a commercial to teach the world to sing — in perfect harmony.
The company, which offers mortgages among other financial services, orchestrated an in-stadium sing-along during Fox’s Sunday broadcast of Super Bowl Lix, cajoling a crowd at New Orleans’ Caesars’ Superdome to come together and belt out John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” just after a 60-second commercial used the popular tune to talk about helping people fulfill a dream of achieving home ownership.
“We are using the Super Bowl as a moment of unity,” says Jonathan Mildenhall, Rocket’s chief marketing officer, during a recent interview. “Let’s be honest,” he added. “’Take Me Home, Country Roads’ is one of very few songs, probably — I can only think of “Sweet Caroline’ — that when you play it anywhere in the world, everyone sings.”

Movie lovers, rejoice! Warner Bros. has quietly made 31 full-length movies available to stream for free on YouTube. This move allows viewers to enjoy classic and lesser-known films without a subscription, though they do come with ads unless you have YouTube Premium.
Over the years, Warner Bros. has experimented with different ways to make money from its vast catalog of films. Over the years, Warner Bros. has tried to monetize its catalog of older movies through different subscription streaming services, including FilmStruck — which it shut down less than a year after it launched in 2018.
Now, Warner Bros. Entertainment has quietly taken a new approach to bringing its content to YouTube to farm its film catalog for digital ad revenue.
Since the start of 2025, the company has released 31 movies on Warner Bros.-owned YouTube channels, all available for free. The movies include ads, unless you are a YouTube Premium subscriber. Warner Bros. has published a YouTube playlist with the free movies, available at this link.
The titles are varied and cut across genres, with some films on the list dating back decades. The movies include “Mutiny on the Bounty” starring Marlon Brando, “The Adventures of Pluto Nash” starring Eddie Murphy, “Oh, God!” featuring George Burns in the titular role, “The Mission” starring Robert De Niro,...

Peter Yarrow, the singer-songwriter best known for his work in the folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, whose career was later overshadowed by a conviction for molesting a 14-year-old girl, has died at the age of 86.
According to a representative, Yarrow died on Tuesday, January 7th, following a prolonged battle with bladder cancer.
Yarrow began performing while a student at Cornell University in New York. After graduating, he became immersed in the city’s fledging folk scene, eventually crossing paths with music manager Albert Grossman, who pitched him on the idea of forming a new age folk group. Yarrow was soon paired with Mary Travers and Noel Stookey to form Peter, Paul & Mary, and the trio released their eponymous debut album through Warner Brothers in 1962. Featuring songs including “Lemon Tree,” “500 Miles,” and a cover of Pete Seeger’s “If I Had a Hammer,” the album proved a mammoth hit, spending seven weeks at No.

Peter Yarrow, a five-time Grammy winner who co-founded the hitmaking folk-pop trio Peter, Paul & Mary and co-wrote its memorable “Puff the Magic Dragon,” died Tuesday of bladder cancer at his New York City home. He was 86.
His daughter Bethany announced the news via reps. “Our fearless dragon is tired and has entered the last chapter of his magnificent life,” she wrote. “The world knows Peter Yarrow the iconic folk activist, but the human being behind the legend is every bit as generous, creative, passionate, playful, and wise as his lyrics suggest.” Read a statement from bandmate Paul Stookey below.
Born on May 31, 1938, in Brooklyn, Yarrow teamed with Stookey and Mary Travers as Peter, Paul and Mary and rode the folk-pop tsunami of the early 1960s. The group scored six Top 10 singles that culminated with their sole chart-topper, the young John Denver-penned “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” in 1969.

For the most part, a trend that emerges during any particular year of cinema doesn't have anything genuinely competitive about it. Sure, there may be the "Dante's Peak" and "Volcano," "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" years, where highly similar projects are developed to compete with each other, but most trends that occur are less about an intentional duel and are more an indication of where the culture's head is at. Remember 2017, when a John Denver song turned up in no less than five separate movies? While there's no one catch-all explanation for such a thing happening, it's intriguing and potentially illuminating to identify the trend and see what, if anything, it speaks to in the contemporary real world.

The Muppets and holiday entertainment go hand-in-hand with a rod attached to it. Obviously, there’s The Muppet Christmas Carol, which some would say is the greatest adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic story (the worst being that musical with Kelsey Grammer). And then there was A Muppet Family Christmas, which teamed up the Muppet Show characters with the Sesame Street gang — only to have it all ruined by a bummer of a teaser for Nightline.
But the Muppets also starred in a number of other holiday specials, including a musical show with John Denver and A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa. Yet, while all of those shows mostly kept their shit together, the 2002 TV movie It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie went to some truly weird places.
Okay, first of all, the most notorious aspect of this movie, which we’ve talked about before, is that it popularized the “Muppets did 9/11” conspiracy theory.

In the 1982 comedy classic Tootsie, Teri Garr plays Sandy Lester, a struggling actress and close friend of Dustin Hoffman’s Michael Dorsey. Between her chosen profession and her many bad choices in men, she has been conditioned to be life’s doormat. In an early scene, she vents that she was trapped in Michael’s bathroom for a half-hour during a party while no one noticed, then admits that, yes, everyone seems to be having a good time. Later, when Michael stands her up for a dinner date, she somehow winds up apologizing to him.

Teri Garr has sadly passed away at the age of 79, but she left behind an incredible body of work that includes some of the greatest (and funniest) movies ever made. Before Garr retired from acting in 2011, she had enjoyed a long and prosperous career. She appeared in a wide range of films and TV shows and amassed a trophy cases worth of accolades. Throughout her storied career, Garr received an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA Award nomination (both for the timeless 80s comedy Tootsie), and won a National Board of Review Award.
Before Garr passed away, she worked with Mel Brooks on one of the best comedies of all time, she worked with Steven Spielberg on one of the best science fiction movies of all time, and she played Phoebes birth mother in Friends. Teri Garr, the Oscar-nominated actress who capitalized on her adorable flightiness in such films as Tootsie and Young Frankenstein before her career was derailed by multiple sclerosis, died Tuesday. She was 79.
Garr, who started out as a background dancer working alongside Elvis Presley in several 1960s party films, died at her home in Los Angeles “surrounded by family and friends,” publicist Heidi Schaeffer told The Hollywood Reporter.
Garr revealed that she had Ms, the chronic, degenerative disease of the nervous system, on Larry King’s CNN show in October 2002, and she survived emergency surgery to treat a brain aneurysm four years later. Her final onscreen appearance came in 2011.
Garr’s career breakthrough came as Gene Wilder’s comely Transylvanian lab assistant in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (1974). She received her supporting actress Oscar nomination for playing Dustin Hoffman’s insecure actress friend in Sydney Pollack’s Tootsie (1982).
Those films ranked Nos.

Jason Reitman's movie about the first-ever broadcast of "Saturday Night Live" has finally received a title, and it's a lot more fitting than you might think. The film is called "Saturday Night," and it's missing the word "Live" for a good reason: that part of the title didn't actually appear in the earliest episodes of the long-running live comedy series.
That's because, according to Time Magazine, a new primetime series already owned the rights to the title "Saturday Night Live" when Lorne Michaels' series was in its infancy, and its home was NBC's rival network, ABC. "Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell" was a short-lived musical variety show starring the sports reporter with a big personality who gave it its title. Machine Gun Kelly and Jelly Roll have shared the video for their collaboration “Lonely Road,” which nods to John Denver’s country classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”
“We worked on “Lonely Road” for 2 years, 8 different studios, 4 different countries, changed the key 4 times, and this Friday you’ll hear we finally got it right,” Mgk previously wrote on social media of the track.
The video — which features the two singers starring alongside their respective significant others, Megan Fox and Bunnie Xo — finds Mgk and Jelly Roll playing down-on-their-financial-luck car mechanics.

Musically, the song features the hip-hop-country blend that both mgk and Jelly Roll have embraced with previous releases. For the chrouses, they lift the melody from Denver’s 1971 classic, but switch out the lyrics for sorrowful lines like “Lonely road take me home/ To the place where we went wrong,” ending...

Even though Chevy Chase says he was still friends with John Belushi until the end, the two comics had several famous bumps in the road while performing on Saturday Night Live. Appearing on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast a few years ago, Chase explained how Belushi even stole drugs from him back before either of them was cast on the iconic show.
“Back then, the big drug was cocaine. And obviously, John turned out to be a cokehead,” Chase chuckled, a disturbing moment of levity considering 1) the cause of Belushi’s death, and 2) the fact that Chase was a bit of a cokehead himself. Case in point: “I had a little jar of cocaine, with a little spoon that hung from it.”
Sure, some people even wore the spoons around their necks like a cross, added Maher, apropos of nothing other than confirming he was hip to the scene,...

Patti Smith offered up an emotional rendition of Lana Del Rey’s song “Summertime Sadness” at her concert in Dublin last night. Smith, who performed at Vicar Street, played a setlist of several classics, but also took the opportunity to perform Del Rey’s 2012 hit.
Appearing with her band, Smith gave an intimate, pensive performance of the song, much to the delight of the crowd. The singer dedicated the song to her late husband and MC5 member Fred Smith, telling the audience it reminded her of their “wild youth.”
