Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed dystopian sci-fi thriller, Severance, finally returned with new episodes early in 2025 after a three-year hiatus. Season 2 of the series, which follows a group of employees at the mysterious Lumon Industries, garnered 27 Emmy nominations, including Britt Lower for her performance as Helly R./Helena Eagan.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter,Lower opened up about how she felt when she first learned she was cast in Severance, which currently boasts a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score. The first season debuted on Apple TV+ in 2022, and prior to that, Lower had appeared as a guest star in shows like American Horror Stories, High Maintenance, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and starred in the Fxx series Man Seeking Woman.

Securing the role of Helly in Severance was a big deal for Lower, who said she fell to her knees when she got the news she’d been cast.

Willem Dafoe will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival “in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the art of film.”

He joins Stellan Skarsgard and Ray Winstone, who will also receive the honor at the fest this year.

One week removed from the 2025 Emmy nominations and there are some clear trends emerging in the Gold Derby predictions. Among the marquee races, for example, Adolescence is the runaway favorite for Best Limited Series, The Studio has opened up a lead over Hacks for Best Comedy Series, and there's a substantial gap between front-runner Severance and The Pitt in Best Drama Series.

However, when it comes to that last category, a closer dive into the data shows a striking chasm between overall voters and the Gold Derby experts, which includes film critics, journalists, and historians. And it doesn't bode well for the Lumon industrial complex.

Although we're still in early days, and we still don't have a critical mass of inputs, Severance comfortably leads the combined-predictions race with 67 percent to The Pitt's 23 percent.

Last year, HBO's The Gilded Age made a major breakthrough at the Emmys by scoring six nominations, including Best Drama Series, for its second season. The third season is currently airing and won't be eligible until next year's Emmys. However, its presence could still be helpful for star Carrie Coon as she contends for her supporting role in another prestige HBO drama, The White Lotus.

This marks Coon's third Emmy nomination, after Fargo in 2017 and The Gilded Age in 2024. On the third season of Mike White's anthology series, Coon plays Laurie Duffy, a recently divorced corporate lawyer from New York City, who, along with her two longtime friends (Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan), reunite on a girls' trip to Thailand.

Based on the early predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actress, the third time will be the charm for Coon. And having a juicy, highly visible role in The Gilded Age will only help.

As of July 19, Severance has passed another Apple TV+ sci-fi series and is in the No. 6 spot in Apple TV+’s Top 10 in the U.S. per FlixPatrol. So, if you’re specifically wanting to check out how many major nods your fave series received, you can easily do that here. We did not include every category, just the major acting and primetime Emmy nominations.

Some of the biggest shows nominated include Severance, The White Lotus, and The Penguin.

It’s clear Emmy voters remain fans of the HBO drama, which saw another impressive showing in this year’s nominations. Eight of the show's stars received nominations as did creator Mike White.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

The HBO series, which swept 10 Emmys in its first season and picked up five more in Season 2, has once again been nominated for Best Drama Series. At the time of the nominations, it was ranked third on Gold Derby’s odds list, behind Severance and The Pitt. It will go up against Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pitt, Severance and Slow Horses.

Best Drama Supporting Actor: Nominated

The show had nine contenders in the supporting actor category, but only three earned nominations: Walton Goggins as Rick, Jason Isaacs as Timothy Ratliff, and Sam Rockwell as Frank. These three consistently ranked among Gold Derby’s top five contenders, with Goggins leading the pack.

The innies and the outies will be partying at the Emmys.

Severance avoided the sophomore slump in a major way, riding its meme-tastic Season 2 to an Emmy-dominating 27 nominations on Tuesday, including a bid for Best Drama Series, and nine acting nods. Entering Emmy season as the show to beat, per the Gold Derby odds, the Apple TV+ series was widely expected not only to improve upon the 14 nominations it garnered in its first season but to challenge last year's nomination champ, Shōgun. In the end, Severance eclipsed the Japanese period drama by two nods and fell just short of Game of Thrones' all-time mark of 32.

Best Drama Series: Nominated

While The White Lotus didn’t sweep the Supporting Actor/Actresses in a Drama Series category, as was at times predicted, the HBO powerhouse did match its Season 2 Emmy nomination tally with 23 this year, bringing its to-date total to 66 with 15 overall wins — with more potentially in store at the ceremony to be held Sept. 14.

Once again nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, performers Jason Isaacs, Scott Glenn and Aimee Lou Wood scored their first-ever Emmy nominations this year.

For Supporting Actress in a Drama, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey and Natasha Rothwell were also honored, with the latter seeing a repeat nomination for her role as Belinda, which she originated back in Season 1. They, along with Wood, face one performer each from Paradise, The Pitt and Severance (Patricia Arquette).

The second season of Apple TV+ showSeverance leads the pack on 27 nods as the TV Academy’s 77th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, while HBO Max enjoyed a company-record 142 nods.

In a strong outing for new shows, favourites heading into Tuesday’s announcements included HBO Max’s The Penguin, which earned 24 nods; and the first season of Apple TV+ comedy The Studio and the third season of HBO Max’s The White Lotus on 23 nominations each. In fact, The Studio tied the record set by The Bear last year for the most nominations in a single year in the comedy category.

Apple TV+ had an impressive showing with the announcement of the 2025 Emmy nominations. The streamer’s acclaimed drama Severance topped all nominees with 27 nods, while its freshman comedy The Studio made a strong debut with 23 nominations.

Severance will take on Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pitt, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus for Best Drama Series. It also earned key bids for Best Actor (Adam Scott), Best Drama Actress (Britt Lower), a trio of Best Drama Supporting Actors, and Best Drama Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). The first two categories – Outstanding Talk Series and Reality Competition Program – were announced early this morning.

Apple TV’s Severance has received the most nods with a massive 27 total nominations across the Emmys and Creative Arts Emmys. HBO’s The Penguin is next with 24, followed by The White Lotus with 23.

If you don’t know, this is the 77th annual Emmy Awards, and they will be hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze. They air on Sunday (September 14) on CBS and Paramount+. Be sure to mark your calendars!

“Severance” is the clear frontrunner for the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards. The Apple TV+ dystopian thriller from Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller scored 27 nominations, the most of any one program, on Tuesday morning.

Altogether, there were four shows that scored more than 20 nominations. HBO’s “The Penguin” was the second most-nominated series of the year with 24 nods. That was followed by Apple TV+’s “The Studio” and HBO’s “The White Lotus,” both of which secured 23 nominations.

Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song announced the nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Earlier on Tuesday, “CBS Mornings” revealed the nominees for reality competition series and talk series, which largely went as predicted.

The 77th Primetime Awards will take place live at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14, 2025. The show will air on CBS and Paramount+ and will be hosted by Nate Bargatze.
