2025 marks 50 years of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the 1975 film adaptation of the stage musical, which has gone on to become a cult classic. Extremely popular among the midnight circuit crowds, the movie starred Susan Surandon, Barry Bostwick, and Tim Curry as Frank-n-Furter, reprising his performance from the stage. However, the character was almost played by a very different performer. "I was approached by Mick Jagger’s people to buy the rights because he wanted to play Frank," screenwriter Richard O'Brien told The Guardian for a new retrospective piece about the film. "I spoke to [director] Jim [Sharman], and he went: 'No, don’t do that.' I said: 'Why not?' He said: “Well, that means we won’t be able to make...

Mick Jagger wanted to play Frank-n-Furter, Susan Sarandon got pneumonia, and the cast were wet and half-naked most of the time. Richard O’Brien, Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn and Nell Campbell tell the surprising, seductive story of cinema’s longest-running cult smash
The Rocky Horror Picture Show was released in cinemas in late 1975 with little fanfare, but the provocative musical, with its campy parody of sci-fi and horror B-movies, fabulous costumes and rollicking songs, dug its glittering heels in and refused to let go for the next 50 years.
The film was an adaptation of the hit musical The Rocky Horror Show, created by Richard O’Brien when he was an unemployed actor. The story of Dr Frank-n-Furter (Tim Curry), an alien, transvestite scientist, decked out like a bewitching glam rock god and hellbent on seducing everyone around him, galvanised audiences into participating in a way that had never been seen before.

Before Fast & Furious: Paul Walker’s Forgotten Thriller That Launched a Secret Society Trilogy ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Before Paul Walker took the wheel in Fast & Furious, he appeared in a lesser-known mystery drama set in a world far removed from racing lanes. The Skulls, released in 2000, placed Walker in a world of covert alongside Joshua Jackson.
The film raked in more than $50 million globally (per Box Office Mojo), made on a modest $15 million budget. Though not widely remembered today, the film didn’t stop there. It later led to two low-profile follow-ups, both of which quietly extended the idea of underground student societies and their secrets.

Rob Cohen's 2000 conspiracy thriller "The Skulls" was a notable hit when it was first released, earning over $50 million on a $15 million budget. The film starred Paul Walker and Joshua Jackson, both rising stars from the late-'90s teen movie circuit. Jackson had recently appeared in films like "Apt Pupil," "Urban Legend," and "Cruel Intentions," while Walker had made a splash in "Pleasantville," "Varsity Blues," and "She's All That." Both of them were, naturally, all that. After "The Skulls," Jackson would continue to rise with the hit soap opera "Dawson's Creek," and Walker would appear in "The Fast and the Furious" the next year. We all know how big its sequels became.
It was a stroke of casting fortune that Walker and Jackson should star in "The Skulls" together, and as rivals, no less. The attractiveness quotient is not measurable by human tools. "The Skulls" takes place at a prestigious,...

Fans are sure to shiver with antici...pation at the rumor that Rocky Horror Picture Show is about to take on new life as a comic book. The beloved musical is rapidly approaching its 50th anniversary and signs are pointing to the infamous and hysterical show being adapted (once again) as a comic.
BleedingCool was the first website to spread word of this potential adaptation. According to a rumor picked up from this year's London Book Fair, fan-favorite writer Magdalene Visaggio, has been tapped by Dark Horse Comics to write Rocky Horror Show #1 this October, in celebration of the musical's 50th anniversary.
Of course, there's no official word just yet as October's a long ways away. But this wouldn't be Visaggio's first brush writing Rocky Horror, as she'd previously contributed to the book of essays Absolute Pleasure: Queer Reflections on Five Messy Decades of Rocky Horror.

At its core, cult phenomenon “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a movie about conservative values versus transgression. The audience surrogates, Brad (asshole!) and Janet (slut!), are two naïve virgins and the living embodiment of the word “stuffy” who are thrown into a world of mad scientist transvestites, hunky Frankensteins, and alien butlers and maids. Sure, the kinky, queer world the two squares fall into is dangerous, but it’s also a lot of fun, and “Rocky Horror” makes it clear that it’s also liberating for the young virgins to escape their conservative world, don some fishnet tights, and embrace their inner freak.
“Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” is a documentary that loudly, and proudly, celebrates the freaks and the misfits who have found solace in the rock ‘n roll musical film since its 1975 premiere. And yet, it fits more in the “square” category than it should.

In our age of instant nostalgia, a big question for any documentarian or oral historian is how soon to take a look back at a beloved property.
Do it too soon and you’ll have more participants available, but with so little distance or reflection that you might as well be making a promotional Epk.
Do it too late and none of your first-hand sources will be available, so you might as well be making a shoebox diorama.
Watching Linus O’Brien’s Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror, a new documentary launching out of SXSW, my most frequently thought was that — actual quality of the film notwithstanding — it’s an absolute blessing to be getting this examination of the Rocky Horror phenomenon at this particular moment in time.

It was only supposed to run for a few weeks at a small experimental space upstairs at London’s Royal Court Theatre. But somehow, 50 years after “The Rocky Horror Show” first debuted, it is still attracting crowds. Its passionate fans supported the show during its transfers to the West End and Broadway, as well as after Hollywood beckoned and a film version of the musical was produced. In fact, there’s probably a midnight screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” playing at a theater near you this weekend.

Many actors have a sliding doors moment in their career when they pass up a choice role in a soon-to-be iconic movie. For some, it isn't a huge deal. Denzel Washington, for example, already had two Oscar nominations and one win under his belt by the time he decided he didn't want to star in David Fincher's "Se7en." Sure, he later came to regret turning away one of the defining films of the '90s, but he was already an established star and would be just fine without it. That isn't always the case when an actor hasn't quite built up the body of work to go around rejecting great parts –- just take Henry Winkler and Danny Zuko in "Grease."
Winkler was virtual unknown when he won the chance to play Fonzie on "Happy Days." Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli started out as a minor supporting character but quickly...

For the bulk of his career, Leslie Nielsen was best known for his stern, dramatic roles. His tall stature and low voice had casting directors offering him parts as commanders, leaders, and even heavies. Many might recall Nielsen's stone-faced turn in 1956's "Forbidden Planet" as the captain in "The Poseidon Adventure," or playing a cop in the 1972 cop drama "The Bold Ones: The Protectors." In 1977's "Day of the Animals" he plays a manly outdoorsman who loses his mind and, quite darkly, declares insane dominion over animals and women. Some might recall that he can hold his breath a long time, as he declared in "Creepshow." Many will be shocked to witness Nielsen beat and assault Barbra Streisand in the 1987 drama "Nuts."
However, Nielsen did appear in a handful of comedies, most notably, playing Dr. Rumack in the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker farce "Airplane!" The parody proved that he had a talent for deadpan comedy,...

Disability has had such little representation in movies that the ones that do feature characters with disabilities often come down to them overcoming it like it is a problem in the first place. The filmmaking duo of director Alexander Yellen and writer Kelli McNeil wanted their film “Daruma” to be anything but that. McNeil, who has been working on the script since 2007 wanted her story to be representative of the community but also not force you to have a sympathetic gaze towards it. The result is a bittersweet indie drama that Sundance was once known to screen in the early 2000s.
Premiered to 2 jam-packed screenings at the Slamdance Film Festival (the neighboring festival that now hosts the actual made-for-Sundance indies) thanks to McNeil’s brilliant marketing strategy, “Daruma” is the story of a paraplegic – a bitter war-veteran named Patrick (Tobias Forrest) who has been cashing on his disability checks splurging...

The Scorpion King movies ranked starts with the eponymous 2002 Dwayne Johnson vehicle before spawning a five-movie series of fantasy fun. Long before joining The Fast Saga as Hobbs, The Rock - as he was still credited at the time - was first seen as the Scorpion King in 2001's The Mummy Returns. Introduced as a conquering warlord in the film's beginning and a human-scorpion hybrid creature in its finale, the Scorpion King's backstory would be explored a year later in the spin-off, The Scorpion King.

What happens when you combine Blazing Saddles, The Magnificent Seven, and Blood and Bone into one epic movie? You get Outlaw Johnny Black, starring martial artist and actor Michael Jai White. The cult comedy/Western, which was released in 2023, will soon be available to stream for free on Tubi. In addition to appearing in some of the most beloved modern martial arts and action movies, like the aforementioned Blood and Bone, Never Back Down, and Falcon Rising. Still, Michael Jai White is perhaps best known for the cult comedy Black Dynamite. Last year, the same creative team produced Outlaw Johnny Black the unofficial sequel fans have long been waiting for.
Starring White as the titular outlaw, Johnny Black, the film blends the classic Western revenge story with the absurd comedy that Black Dynamite fans have grown to love. The movie pairs its love for the Western genre with a dissection of the blaxploitation films.

Spawn star Michael Jai White's comedy Western film Outlaw Johnny Black will be on the free streaming platform Tubi beginning Nov. 1. The film currently has a 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Outlaw Johnny Black was released in 2023 as a spiritual successor to the 2009 blaxploitation film Black Dynamite. Michael Jai White wrote, directed and produced the film in addition to starring in it. Outlaw Johnny Black centers around its titular character as he goes on a mission to avenge the death of his father, with the film playing off of iconic western movie tropes. Johnny Black becomes a wanted man during his adventures, eventually posing as a preacher in a small mining town. White was joined by Byron Minns in the film, with both actors also appearing together in Black Dynamite. Outlaw Johnny Black will be available on Tubi from Nov. 1.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show was released over 40 years ago but is as popular as ever, and the most fabulous Rocky Horror quotes are a testament to its longevity. The film follows Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) as they go on a road trip after getting engaged and get stranded at Dr. Frank-n-Furters (Tim Curry) mansion. The film received mixed reviews upon release but developed a cult following. With hidden meanings about the glam rock movement and gender expression, there is plenty to dissect in each viewing.
The movie is still highly regarded due to the original music from Richard OBrien and the screenplay from OBrien and Jim Sharman. Tim Curry's stand-out film is often a yearly tradition for many around Halloween during which time Rocky Horror quotes and one-liners run amok, but there really isn't a bad time to watch it. When we talk about movies being hard to categorize or even succinctly summarize, this movie is the poster child for that statement. Almost 50 years on and that still holds true but how about is it good? Does a movie need to be put in a specific area or even be able to be explained to still be good? The Rocky Horror Picture Show is in a category all by itself and yet has had spinoffs of sorts and on-stage revivals since its inception and shows no signs of slowing down. I’m not even sure how the introduction to such a movie should be fleshed out so take a jump to the left, a step to the right, put your hands on your hips and bring your knees in tight. We are about to take a time warp and see if The Rocky Horror Picture Show still stands the Test of Time.
