With The Rocky Horror Picture Show still enjoying a limited theatrical release in 2025, it is the longest-running theatrical release in film history — a record that will likely be hard for any other film to beat. Now, the groundbreaking film is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a series of events and tributes. Originally released in 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show starred Tim Curry in his debut alongside Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick.

A special 4K Blu-ray version of the film will go on sale on Oct. 7, and it will come with a collectible limited-edition Steelbook. The new restoration includes Dolby Vision and Atmos audio for an elevated viewing experience, as well as restored original 2.0 Mono audio tracks.

Exclusive: Kaleidoscope Film Distribution has acquired international sales rights to Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror, a documentary chronicling the legacy of Richard O’Brien’s classic musical The Rocky Horror Show.

The film debuted at SXSW in March; Kaleidoscope will release it in the UK in Q4 this year.

Master of horror John Carpenter is invading the world’s largest Halloween and horror convention, Midsummer Scream, on August 16.

He’ll be appearing as a part of Storm King Comics, founded by his wife and producing partner, Sandy King, who will also be in attendance.

According to a rumor picked up from this year's London Book Fair, fan-favorite writer Magdalene Visaggio, has been tapped by Dark Horse Comics to write Rocky Horror Show #1 this October, in celebration of the musical's 50th anniversary.

Of course, there's no official word just yet as October's a long ways away. But this wouldn't be Visaggio's first brush writing Rocky Horror, as she'd previously contributed to the book of essays Absolute Pleasure: Queer Reflections on Five Messy Decades of Rocky Horror.

At its core, cult phenomenon “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a movie about conservative values versus transgression. The audience surrogates, Brad (asshole!) and Janet (slut!), are two naïve virgins and the living embodiment of the word “stuffy” who are thrown into a world of mad scientist transvestites, hunky Frankensteins, and alien butlers and maids. Sure, the kinky, queer world the two squares fall into is dangerous, but it’s also a lot of fun, and “Rocky Horror” makes it clear that it’s also liberating for the young virgins to escape their conservative world, don some fishnet tights, and embrace their inner freak.

“Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” is a documentary that loudly, and proudly, celebrates the freaks and the misfits who have found solace in the rock ‘n roll musical film since its 1975 premiere. And yet, it fits more in the “square” category than it should.

In our age of instant nostalgia, a big question for any documentarian or oral historian is how soon to take a look back at a beloved property.

Do it too soon and you’ll have more participants available, but with so little distance or reflection that you might as well be making a promotional Epk.

Do it too late and none of your first-hand sources will be available, so you might as well be making a shoebox diorama.

Since 1975 nearly a thousand hosts have graced the stage at Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center for “Saturday Night Live.”

Actors, comedians, musicians and even politicians have taken the stage to make America laugh on Saturday night for 50 seasons. Twenty five of these hosts have been inducted into the “Five Timers Club.” The club was first introduced during Tom Hanks’ 1990 monologue, featuring Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon.

During Martin Short’s December 2024 appearance, several Five Timers Club members popped up on the show to welcome him into the club, including Emma Stone, Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig and more, to give him the ceremonial robe.

Alec Baldwin has hosted the show 17 times, the most in the series’ history, with Martin, Hanks, Buck Henry and John Goodman following close behind.

Barbara Taylor Bradford, the bestselling author whose 1979 novel “A Woman of Substance” sold 30 million copies worldwide and was adapted into a successful Channel 4 miniseries, died on Sunday. She was 91.

Taylor Bradford’s death was confirmed to the Associated Press by a spokesperson, who said she died at her home in New York City. No cause of death was provided.

Born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England on May 10, 1933, Taylor Bradford began her career as a journalist before beginning to pen novels in her 40s, often revolving around young women making a name for themselves in business after overcoming obstacles. In total, she wrote 40 books, all of which became bestsellers in the United Kingdom and United States.

Disability has had such little representation in movies that the ones that do feature characters with disabilities often come down to them overcoming it like it is a problem in the first place. The filmmaking duo of director Alexander Yellen and writer Kelli McNeil wanted their film “Daruma” to be anything but that. McNeil, who has been working on the script since 2007 wanted her story to be representative of the community but also not force you to have a sympathetic gaze towards it. The result is a bittersweet indie drama that Sundance was once known to screen in the early 2000s.

Spawn star Michael Jai White's comedy Western film Outlaw Johnny Black will be on the free streaming platform Tubi beginning Nov. 1. The film currently has a 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Outlaw Johnny Black was released in 2023 as a spiritual successor to the 2009 blaxploitation film Black Dynamite. Michael Jai White wrote, directed and produced the film in addition to starring in it. Outlaw Johnny Black centers around its titular character as he goes on a mission to avenge the death of his father, with the film playing off of iconic western movie tropes. Johnny Black becomes a wanted man during his adventures, eventually posing as a preacher in a small mining town. White was joined by Byron Minns in the film, with both actors also appearing together in Black Dynamite. Outlaw Johnny Black will be available on Tubi from Nov. 1.

When we talk about movies being hard to categorize or even succinctly summarize, this movie is the poster child for that statement. Almost 50 years on and that still holds true but how about is it good? Does a movie need to be put in a specific area or even be able to be explained to still be good? The Rocky Horror Picture Show is in a category all by itself and yet has had spinoffs of sorts and on-stage revivals since its inception and shows no signs of slowing down. I’m not even sure how the introduction to such a movie should be fleshed out so take a jump to the left, a step to the right, put your hands on your hips and bring your knees in tight. We are about to take a time warp and see if The Rocky Horror Picture Show still stands the Test of Time.
