“Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery,” said Denis Villeneuve. “I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.”

Steve: Cillian Murphy is an inspirational teacher in Netflix’s prestige drama
Image
Netflix’s movies – to me, anyway – always fall neatly into two categories. There are the big audience blockbusters, such as The Electric State, Carry-On, and the upcoming The Old Guard 2 and Happy Gilmore 2, and then there’s the prestige fare. Sometimes the two categories meet, such as with the Knives Out movies, but for the most part, they are distinct. As much as some of their blockbusters seem to vanish into the ether of streaming, they’ve also bankrolled some intriguing prestige fare that rank among the most acclaimed films of our era, such as Roma, Marriage Story, The Irishman, and many others. After a quiet 2024 that saw them throw all their eggs into the Emilia Perez basket, the streamer is back with a bumper crop of awards fare this year, including Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, and more.

Among them is a low-key English drama called Steve,...

Adam Sandler's Sports Comedy Remake Lands New Streaming Home for 20th Anniversary
Image
Another Adam Sandler sports comedy is heading to Hulu. Following Happy Gilmore's addition to the streamer's library earlier this month, The Longest Yard will make its way onto the platform at the top of next month.

Beginning July 1, The Longest Yard will be available to stream on Hulu. Released in 2005, the Peter Segal-directed sports comedy stars Sandler as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, a washed-up former professional football quarterback who goes to prison and is forced to assemble a team to play against the guards. The movie was a remake of the 1974 movie of the same name starring Burt Reynolds, who appears in the new version as Nate Scarborough, a former college football star who agrees to coach the prisoners' team. Chris Rock, James Cromwell, Nelly, William Fichtner, David Patrick Kelly, Tracy Morgan, and Cloris Leachman also appear in supporting roles.

The Longest Yard was a commercial success, grossing $191.5 million worldwide off an $82 million budget.

Venice 2025: ‘Smashing Machine’ With Dwayne Johnson, Luca Guadagnino’s ‘After the Hunt’ Starring Julia Roberts, Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Latest Collab Eyed for Lineup
Image
Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett and Emma Stone are among the rich roster of stars featured in hotly anticipated new movies expected to be launching from Venice Film Festival.

With one month to go until the Lido lineup is unveiled, Venice’s artistic director Alberto Barbera is racing against the clock to assemble the festival’s 82nd edition, slots for which are still in flux. But what’s clear is that there will be no shortage of the type of buzzy titles that make Venice a prime awards season driver.

Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” featuring Dwayne Johnson as two-time UFC heavyweight champ Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn; Luca Guadagnino’s #MeToo-themed thriller “After the Hunt” starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri; and “Bugonia,” the latest collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone — who were last...

Beyond Dakota, Pedro and Chris: ‘Materialists’ Casting Director Breaks Down the Supporting Cast and Building a ‘Tapestry of New York Personalities’
Image
Spoiler Warning: This article contains plot details, including some spoilers, for “Materialists,” playing in theaters now.

“Materialists,” Celine Song‘s new film, is anchored by a charming lead trio: Dakota Johnson as matchmaker Lucy, Pedro Pascal as wealthy bachelor Harry and Chris Evans as Lucy’s ex-boyfriend John. But the film opens up beyond those leads, as Lucy comes across a wide range of New Yorkers, each more eccentric than the other. Song makes each character memorable — no matter how briefly they are shown. The result is a strong and lively supporting cast made up of actors at the top of their game, who you’ll likely recognize from other roles.

And those actors are often New Yorkers in real life. That was intentional for the film’s casting director, Douglas Aibel, who also runs the New York theater company, Vineyard Theater. He wanted each actor to be “believably New York.

‘Barbie 2’: Everything We Know So Far
Image
No fan can forget the impact Barbie created at the 2023 box office, creating the Barbenheimer cultural phenomenon with Oppenheimer in theaters. The film emerged as the top-grossing film of 2023, with a $1.4 billion gross box office return, and garnered numerous Oscar nominations. With a massive success like this, fans expected the studio to push for a sequel as soon as they could.

However, the official sequel announcement has yet to come from Warner Bros. A report in December 2024 suggested that Barbie 2 was in early-stage development, but the studio and director Greta Gerwig have dismissed this particular report. It appears that the film’s cast and crew are torn on the decision whether to pursue a sequel or not.

Ben Stiller and Jessica Lee Gagné on the Arts and Crafts Behind the Art and Craft of Hit ‘Severance’
Image
On June 5, the IndieWire Honors Spring 2025 ceremony will celebrate the creators and stars responsible for some of the most impressive and engaging work of this TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, IndieWire Honors is a celebration of the creators, artisans, and performers behind television well worth toasting. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.

Eight years ago — still two years before Apple TV+ launched, and five years ahead of the “Severance” premiere — Ben Stiller was “desperately seeking a cinematographer.” He was in pre-production on the Showtime (remember Showtime?) limited series “Escape at Dannemora,” a prison break thriller that would mark Stiller’s first serialized directorial effort, and he couldn’t find a director of photography fit for the long shoot ahead.

At the same time, Jessica Lee Gagné was moving to France. “I was actually intentionally not moving to the U.

Scarlett Johansson Says She Has Always Wanted to Direct, but Acting Took Precedence: ‘I Veered Off That Path’
Image
Time can be a bit of flat circle when you’re starring in a handful of Marvel films for over a decade, but thankfully things have come back around for Scarlett Johansson. After “Avengers: Endgame” and “Black Widow,” she went on to be featured in a number Wes Anderson films, including the upcoming “The Phoenician Scheme,” as well as Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” and has now directed her feature debut “Eleanor the Great.” The dark dramedy had its world premiere in Un Certain Regard at Cannes 2025 and marks an important milestone in Johansson’s career. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Johansson explained how she always thought she’d be a director, but got lost in acting.

“When I was much younger, I thought I would end up doing that eventually,” Johansson said of directing. “In my early 20s, I became focused on understanding my job as an actor better.

Noah Baumbach in Greenberg (2010)
Love Me Tender - Marko Stojiljkovic - 19731
Noah Baumbach in Greenberg (2010)
In divorce and custody battles, courts have the thankless task of listening to both sides’ claims, no matter how outrageous they might be, making the procedures unnecessarily long and the “industry” and bureaucracy created around them abundantly “oiled up”. Noah Baumbach used some of his own experiences with the machinery to make his near-masterpiece Marriage Story (2019) to expose how things work even when both parties are “normal” and decent people with their child’s best interest in mind.

The simple and ugly fact is that the side that is first to “pull the trigger” usually has the advantage and can dictate terms, while the other has to comply. Usually, the men are those who leave the family behind, so women sue their ex-spouses for full custody and alimony, while the legal system, at least the Continental one, favours the simplistic traditional image of a father as a breadwinner and a.

Here Are Quentin Tarantino’s Favorite Comedies of the 21st Century
Image
Acclaimed filmmaker and former Golden Girls star Quentin Tarantino is a big fan of comedy. Although you might not know it from watching the disastrous episode of Saturday Night Live that he hosted back in 1995.

In fact, Tarantino has previously expressed an interest in making his own Western comedy, and famously cast five members of the Groundlings in Pulp Fiction. So perhaps it’s not all that shocking that some of his favorite movies of the past 25 years are comedies.

Far Out Magazine recently compiled a list of Tarantino’s apparent preferred 21st century films, which includes titles such as Mad Max: Fury Road, Battle Royale, There Will Be Blood and Top Gun: Maverick. On the comedy front, Tarantino singled out Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Team America: World Police, which one would imagine didn’t make Matt Damon or Michael Moore’s list of favorite movies.

Scarlett Johansson On Why The Script For Her Directorial Debut ‘Eleanor The Great’ Made Her Cry: “It’s About Forgiveness” – Cannes Cover Story
Image
Scarlett Johansson has wanted to direct since she was 12 years old. On the set of Robert Redford’s 1998 film The Horse Whisperer — her seventh movie as an actor — she saw the specific way he worked, the way he understood his actors, and she had a clear thought: I want to do that someday.

Related: ‘Eleanor The Great’ Cannes Premiere Photos: Scarlett Johansson, Colin Jost, Adrien Brody & More

Obviously, in the almost 30 years since Johansson made that private wish, it’s not as though she’s been waiting for something to happen. Oscar-nominated twice and a Tony winner for her work on Broadway, she serves as executive producer and stars as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She founded her production company These Pictures in 2017, and, along with Redford, her director collaborators over the years include Christopher Nolan, Sofia Coppola, Jonathan Glazer, the Coens, Noah Baumbach and Wes Anderson. Tom Francis Is Ready to Flex His Muscles for Hollywood
Image
Tom Francis first discovered his talents while listening to Oasis. The British-born actor, who is currently starring (alongside Nicole Scherzinger) in the Broadway run of Sunset Blvd., was seven years old. The album was Don’t Believe the Truth. “I became absolutely obsessed with the band, and there’s a song that closes the album called ‘Let There Be Love,’ and I remember sitting down with my guitar and figuring out how to play and sing it,” he explains to The Hollywood Reporter. Francis’ parents happened to be eavesdropping. “I got so embarrassed, and shouted at them like, ‘Don’t ever do that to me again,'” he laughs. “I didn’t want any to watch me sing, ever. But then that night at dinner, my dad told me, ‘I think you’re really very good.’ And I took that on.”

Eighteen years later, Francis, 25, is nominated for a Tony Award...

Netflix announces release date of Jay Kelly starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler
Image
What do we know about the plotline of Noah Baumbach's new Netflix film, Jay Kelly? We know a lot of the cast (and it is a good one), but what about the story? Not much. The film's tagline is that the titular character is well-known, but, sadly, he does not know himself well.

Still, who cares? We are going to watch either way, and we likely should. Baumbach has a long history of success with your favorite streamer, including the Oscar-nominated Marriage Story. Jay Kelly will be his fourth partnership with Netflix.

But again, that cast... The film stars George Clooney and Adam Sandler, so that alone makes the film worth watching. The movie is heartbreaking, but does that mean "dark comedy?" Maybe. With Sandler and Clooney involved, we can assume lots of well-earned laughs and poignant emotions.

The movie, clearly an Oscar hopeful, will head into US and UK cinemas on 14th November for a short run before Jay Kelly debuts on Netflix on 5th December.

Image
Netflix is introducing the world to Jay Kelly.

On Tuesday, the streaming service released fresh information about Noah Baumbach’s new movie, Jay Kelly, including its release date and a first photo of star George Clooney as the title character.

Jay Kelly will premiere in select theaters on Nov. 14 before streaming on Netflix on Dec. 5.

Long-rumored to be a coming-of-age movie about adults, the official logline for Jay Kelly is slightly more vague: “Everybody knows Jay Kelly, but Jay Kelly doesn't know himself.”

In the first photo from the movie, Clooney’s Jay Kelly stands in front of a photograph of Jay Kelly, suggesting that the world-famous celebrity is playing a world-famous celebrity.

Baumbach cowrote the movie with Emily Mortimer, who costars in the feature. Other members of the ensemble include Adam Sandler, Billy Crudup, Laura Dern, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Riley Keough, Patrick Wilson, Nicôle Lecky, Thaddea Graham, Jim Broadbent,...

Netflix Dates Noah Baumbach’s ‘Jay Kelly’ Starring George Clooney & Adam Sandler
Image
Netflix announced this morning that Jay Kelly, Noah Baumbach’s new film starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, is slated for release in theaters on November 14 and will debut on streaming on December 5.

The service also unveiled a first-look still of Clooney as the title character, which you can view below.

In announcing Jay Kelly, Netflix referred to the project as a “heartbreaking comedy,” though little about the project is known apart from that. Per the logline, everybody knows Jay Kelly…but Jay Kelly doesn’t know himself.

Baumbach wrote the script for the pic — marking his fourth outing with Netflix — with Emily Mortimer, one of many others featuring in the ensemble. He also produced the film alongside David Heyman and Amy Pascal, the duo who recently inked a deal to produce the next Bond film at Amazon MGM. Additional cast includes Billy Crudup, Laura Dern, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach,...

Noah Baumbach’s ‘Jay Kelly’ Gets First Image and Awards-Friendly Release Date
Image
Noah Baumbach is getting back in the awards race, and he’s bringing a star-studded cast including George Clooney and Adam Sandler.

Netflix has announced that Baumbach’s upcoming feature “Jay Kelly” will open in theaters on November 14 before hitting the streaming service on December 5. The announcement was accompanied by a photo of Clooney, who plays the title character, walking past a poster of himself.

“Jay Kelly” appears to be a return to the familiar territory of middle aged neuroses for Baumbach, following the apocalyptic ambition of his previous feature, “White Noise.” While little is known about the film’s plot, it is believed to center around the relationship between Clooney’s eponymous character and a longtime friend played by Sandler. A cryptic official synopsis reads “Everybody knows Jay Kelly, but Jay Kelly doesn’t know himself.”

In addition to Clooney and Sandler, “Jay Kelly” stars Billy Crudup, Laura Dern,...

Summer of 69 Review: Jillian Bell’s directorial debut is a funny and sincere coming-of-age sex comedy
Image
Plot: An awkward high school senior hires an exotic dancer to help seduce her longtime crush before graduation, leading to unexpected friendship and lessons in self-confidence, acceptance and adulthood.

Review: The sex comedy has long been the domain of male-centric stories. In the early 2000s, there was a shift to telling more female-led comedies that used nudity and graphic content to show that women could be just as nasty as men. While it has been a while since a solid R-rated comedy has done well on the big screen, several independent films have been snatched up by streaming platforms to pad their libraries. The latest addition to Hulu’s slate is one of the more substantive efforts and comes from actress Jillian Bell, making her feature directorial debut. Summer of 69 starts with a tone and approach that makes it seem in line with films like The Girl Next Door or...

Greta Gerwig’s Favorite Movies: 32 Films the Director Wants You to See
Image
[Editor’s note: This article was first published in April 2023, and has since been updated].

She only has three solo directorial efforts under her belt, but Greta Gerwig has quickly become one of the most highly respected filmmakers working today. Her 2017 coming-of-age drama “Lady Bird” was an instant teen classic upon release, and her 2019 adaptation of “Little Women” received similar rapturous acclaim, becoming the definitive film version of the classic book.

And in July 2023, after an agonizing four year wait and acting a lead role in partner Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” Gerwig came back to theaters as a director with the biggest film of the year. “Barbie” is a colorful studio comedy based on the classic dolls from Mattel, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the titular Barbie and her heartthrob Ken. (He’s just Ken!) And it smashed box office numbers to gross over $1 billion globally.

Gerwig perhaps wasn’t the obvious director to choose for bringing the thematically thorny Barbie universe to cinemas; before “Lady Bird,...

Emma Mackey Joins Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ as the White Witch
Image
Emma Mackey will journey from Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” world to the land of “Narnia,” reteaming with the director for her adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ beloved fantasy series for Netflix.

Mackey has landed the coveted role of the White Witch, the primary antagonist who was played by Tilda Swinton beginning with 2005’s “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Mackey will join Meryl Streep, who is in talks to play Aslan, the talking lion who serves as Narnia’s guardian and guide for the human children who enter its world.

Gerwig wrote the script and is directing the film, which will reportedly tackle the sixth novel of the series, “The Magician’s Nephew,” where the White Witch (whose name is Jadis) features prominently. “Narnia” is currently slated to open in Imax on Thanksgiving Day 2026, where the film will screen worldwide — and exclusively — for two weeks...

Her mother, the actress Shelly Gibson who appeared on “St. Elsewhere” and “Law & Order,” posted a photo of her daughter on Instagram over the weekend, writing: “Rip, my Sophie. She graced us for far too short a time. My daughter was a light for all who met her. For those us of who were truly close with Sophie, we are gutted...

Sophie Nyweide, the former child actor who made appearances in the films Mammoth, Noah Baumbach’s Margot at the Wedding and Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, died April 14. She was 24.

In a paid obituary, her family wrote that the former actor “self-medicated to deal with all the trauma and shame she held inside, and it resulted in her death.”

“Sophie was a kind and trusting girl,” her family writes. “Often this left her open to being taken advantage of by others. She wrote and drew voraciously, and much of this art depicts the depth she had, and it also represents the pain she suffered. Many of her writings and artwork are roadmaps of her struggles and traumas. Even with those roadmaps, diagnoses and her own revelations, those closest to her, plus therapists, law enforcement officers and others who tried to help her, are heartbroken their efforts couldn’t save her from her fate.

Funboys Season 1 Review: Small‑Town Ennui, Big Laughs
Image
Funboys began as a 2023 BBC Three short that quietly stole its way into my heart, then grew into four tightly wound, twenty‑minute episodes on BBC One and iPlayer. Created, written, directed by—and starring—Ryan Dylan and Rian Lennon, it feels like an indie experiment that accidentally hit the mainstream sweet spot.

From those first sweeping shots of emerald pastures and Guinness‑swigging locals, the series teases pastoral calm before dropping us into a dimly lit living room where Callum, Jordan and Lorcan wage war over video‑game controllers and fizzy‑drink challenges.

At its core, Funboys operates in mockumentary territory but rejects the safety of talking‑head interviews. Instead, it stitches together sketch‑style vignettes—each edit snapping us from quiet absurdity to full‑throttle cringe comedy, reminiscent of Godard’s jump‑cuts or Truffaut’s playful ruptures of time. The camera lingers on the boys’ expressions long...

Journey to You Review: Embracing Faith and Rediscovery
Image
Journey to You arrives as a faith‑inflected Hallmark romance set against the storied Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in northern Spain. Monica (Erin Cahill), a Boston emergency‑room nurse whose life has revolved around hospital protocols and a relentless work ethic, heeds her late father’s final gift—a devotional—and answers her mother’s call to walk the ancient stone paths. Alongside her travels Luis (Erik Valdez), a divorced psychologist balancing single fatherhood, his own father Ernesto (Pep Tosar), and teenage son Mateo (Solal Bellaiche), all under the watchful eye of their spirited guide, Consuelo (Isabelle Bres).

Caleb’s perspective: this film marries moments of quiet introspection with the kind of budding romance that feels genuine rather than formulaic. Director X (or “the filmmakers”) trusts wide‑angle vistas—sunlit vineyards, moss‑covered cathedrals—to punctuate scenes of prayer and personal reckoning, while editing choices echo a French New Wave sensibility,...

Adam Sandler's Performance in Netflix's 'Jay Kelly' Is Already Getting Oscar Buzz
Image
Happy Gilmore star Adam Sandler could be all set for Oscar glory with his new movie. Sadly, no, it’s not Happy Gilmore 2. The beloved actor and comedian will reunite with Netflix once again for an upcoming coming-of-age comedy-drama, with a source who's seen the movie revealing that, not only will the streamer campaign hard for Sandler to be considered by the Academy, but that could even win a coveted golden statue.

Titled Jay Kelly, the movie is being helmed by Academy Award nominee and Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach, and could be described as a coming-of-middle-age comedy as it follows friends, played by Sandler and George Clooney, who rediscover their youthful spirit during a chaotic reunion.

Now, buzz from an early screening (via World of Reel) has emerged, with “industry sources, journalists, and test reports” stating that Sandler steals the show in Jay Kelly, with the Billy Madison star delivering a career-best performance.

Are You There? Review: Between Science and Specter
Image
A single question whispered in candlelight can blur the line between life and death. Are You There? (2025) marks director Kim Noonan’s entry into psychological supernatural thrillers, with a script by Brian S. Tedeschi and Vicki Vass that probes the edge of personal reality.

At its center is Rosa Gonzalez, a paranormal psychology student who inherits a ritual candle from her late grandmother. Tasked with asking “Are you there?” as the flame bends toward “sí” or “no,” Rosa sets out to reconnect with her abuela. Early on, the ceremony feels like controlled inquiry, but soon the ritual’s response plunges her into a waking nightmare.

Noonan’s film unfolds at an unhurried clip, letting dread simmer rather than erupt. Shadows deepen in every frame, while moments of silence amplify the unexpected creaks and whispers around Rosa. Beneath the supernatural shimmer lies a portrait of grief and unresolved trauma—the real...

5 Most Underrated Jack Black Movies
Image
The secret to a huge payday at the box office? These days, the magic name is "Jack Black." Between the record-breaking success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" (where he voiced the big baddie Bowser) and now the ridiculous performance of "A Minecraft Movie," Black is the man on top and can't be stopped. It's also unsurprising, considering he's been one of the most recognizable comedy faces in Hollywood for decades, with roles in films like "Saving Silverman," "Shallow Hal," "School of Rock," "Nacho Libre," "Tropic Thunder," the "Kung Fu Panda" franchise, and the recent "Jumanji" reboot movies (in addition to his band Tenacious D) keeping him a superstar.

But what about the roles that people might not be as familiar with? What about those hidden gems in Black's filmography that don't get as much attention because they aren't as showy as some of his more notable works? In honor...
