The Infamous Critical Flop That Failed To Capture Jurassic Park's Box Office Magic

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"In every frame, it aspires to be a theme park." Those are the words of critic Hal Hinson writing in 1995 for The Washington Post about director Frank Marshall's "Congo." Hinson was certainly not alone in his dismissal of the film, which was met with scathing reviews upon its release 30 years ago. Ironically, the film in question was made in direct response to the success of "Jurassic Park," a movie about making a dinosaur theme park, one also based on the works of Author Michael Crichton.

If there is one thing Hollywood will reliably do just about 100% of the time, it's attempting to recapture success. Because "X-Men" was a big hit in...

'James Bond' Star Joe Don Baker Dies Aged 89
Image
Joe Don Baker, who played a bad guy and a CIA agent in three James Bond films and the star of the classic movie Walking Tall, has died aged 89. His family announced on May 7 that the actor had passed, but no cause of death was revealed. Baker established himself as an action star, first appearing in minor roles on television and in films in the mid-to-late '60s. It wasn't long before he snagged his breakthrough role as real-life Tennessee Sheriff Buford Pusser in the 1976 movie Walking Tall. After that, leading and supporting roles flowed in for the Texas native, who played basketball and football in school.

After serving two years in the United States Army, Baker moved to New York City to study at the Actors Studio. While there, during the 1963-1964 Broadway season, he appeared onstage in Marathon '33, a play based on June Havoc's memoir, which...

‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ Stars Pay Their Respects to the Star They Brutally Mocked
Image
Actor Joe Don Baker has reportedly passed away at the age of 89. And while fans will no doubt remember him for his work in films like Walking Tall, Fletch and Martin Scorsese’s remake of Cape Fear, for others, the role he’ll always be most closely associated with is Mitchell. From the movie Mitchell. Was that his first or last name? We may never know.

The 1975 flick was a piece of forgettable low-budget schlock about a schlubby police detective whose disregard for the rules is equaled by his love of terrible sport jackets.

There would be no reason for anyone who wasn’t a projectionist for a scuzzy movie theater in 1975 to remember Mitchell, if not for the fact that it was the subject of a very memorable episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. In Season Six of the beloved sci-comedy show, host Joel Hodgson and his two robot sidekicks relentlessly roasted the movie,...

Remembering the Late Joe Don Baker, Dead at 89, Arguably the First American Bond Villain
Image
Joe Don Baker, beloved character actor who populated classic films from “Walking Tall” to “Cape Fear” with his unique spin on the brawny Texan persona, is dead at 89, his family announced. He is survived by a circle of friends and extended relations in his hometown of Groesbeck, Texas.

Joe Don Baker, Walking Tall star and James Bond actor, dies at 89
Joe Don Baker in The Commission (2003)
Joe Don Baker, who led one of the greatest vigilante movies ever, Walking Tall, has passed away. Baker was 89.

Joe Don Baker began his career in the 1960s, turning up in roles in Cool Hand Luke, Guns of the Magnificent Seven and Junior Bonner. But it was playing wrestler-turned-vigilante Buford Pusser – a real-life sheriff in Tennessee – that put him on the map. (He would later be replaced by Bo Svenson for the sequels.)

Much of the focus of Joe Don Baker in his post-Walking Tall ‘70s lineup was on crime movies, landing spots in Charley Varrick, The Outfit and Framed. Action was a forte of Baker’s as well, turning up in a number throughout the first leg of his career.

Joe Don Baker would later have a distinction of playing two different characters in the James Bond franchise. First came 1987’s The Living Daylights, where he played black...

Joe Don Baker at an event for Shérif, fais-moi peur (2005)
Joe Don Baker, the broad-shouldered Texas tough guy who portrayed characters on both sides of the law, most notably Sheriff Buford Pusser in the unexpected box-office hit Walking Tall, died May 7, his family announced. He was 89.

Baker first attracted mainstream attention in 1972 when he starred as the younger, business-minded brother of an aging Arizona rodeo rider (Steve McQueen) in Sam Peckinpah’s Junior Bonner (1972), then portrayed a sadistic mob hitman named Molly in Don Siegel’s Charley Varrick (1973), starring Walter Matthau.

In James Bond films, the 6-foot-3 Baker played a villain, the megalomaniacal arms dealer Brad Whitaker, in The Living Daylights (1987), starring Timothy Dalton as 007, then returned as a good guy, CIA agent Jack Wade, opposite Pierce Brosnan in the 1995 and ’97 movies GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies, respectively.

As former professional wrestler Pusser — based on a real-life sheriff who cleaned up crime in his Tennessee town — Baker survives a series...

Casino Royale Has A Cameo From A Former James Bond Girl
Image
There's an interesting parallel between 1997's "Batman & Robin" and 2002's "Die Another Day." The former almost killed off the Batman cinematic saga before it had even existed for more than a decade, while Pierce Brosnan's swan song as James Bond almost put an end to what had been, ever since 1962's "Dr. No," cinema's most enduring franchise. Then, in 2005, Batman got what became known as a "gritty reboot," with Christopher Nolan reinventing the iconic hero for his "Batman Begins" origin story. The following year, Bond would get the same treatment, with what remains the best Bond movie ever made: "Casino Royale."

Both movies turned around flailing franchises, and both movies took a more grounded approach to their protagonist, ditching much of the traditions that had come to define both franchises in order to introduce something truly fresh. In 007's case, Daniel Craig gave us all a version...

'Cape Fear' Series Adds Patrick Wilson to Apple TV+ Show
Image
Patrick Wilson is the latest actor to join the upcoming Cape Fear remake. Wilson, whose addition was reported by Variety, joins previously announced cast members Amy Adams and Javier Bardem. Apple TV+'s screen adaptation will mark the third, following the classic J. Lee Thompson film from 1962 and Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake, both of which were based on the 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. This version, however, will be the first time the story is explored episodically.

The 10-episode series' official logline reads:

A storm is coming for happily married attorneys Anna (Adams) and Tom Bowden when Max Cady (Bardem), a notorious killer from their past, gets out of prison.

Scorsese famously directed the 1990s remake, which starred Robert De Niro as convicted rapist Max Cady, who seeks revenge against his former public defender, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), whom he blames for his 14-year imprisonment. The film also starred Jessica Lange,...

The Only Two James Bond Actors To Play Both A Hero & A Main Villain
Image
Now in its 63rd year of existence, the James Bond franchise has experienced its share of turbulence, but though it all has managed to adapt its formula to the ever-changing times without losing its old-school sense of fun. Even when an individual film fails to deliver the goods, fans are still guaranteed the globetrotting exhilaration — be it gripping or goofy — of several major action set pieces jam-packed with practical stunt work. The viewer also knows there will be an array of new gadgets, and they can be fairly certain Bond will team up with a stunning beautiful foil who, now that we live in more enlightened times, will prove every bit his equal in the combat department.

There's also a pleasing sense of continuity with the actors. Starting with Sean Connery, Bond aficionados came to love actors like Bernard Lee as M, Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny, and Desmond Llewelyn...

The First Original James Bond Film Still Holds up 30 Years Later
Image
Quick Links 'GoldenEye' Is Arguably Brosnan's Best Bond Film How 'GoldenEye' Still Holds Up in 2025 We Need More Original Future James Bond Movies

Author Ian Fleming has been synonymous with James Bond since the British MI6 agent's introduction in 1953. Yet, one of the best latter-day Bond movies, GoldenEye, was the first in franchise history to avoid adapting story beats from a Fleming novel. The film also marked Pierce Brosnan's inaugural portrayal of the dangerously dashing superspy, leading to three more reprisals and a popular video game spinoff.

With GoldenEye targeting its 30th anniversary in November 2025, reflecting on the movie's original story, explosive set-pieces, performances, and direction by Martin Campbell ought to make a legitimate case for more fresh 007 stories that rely less on Fleming's outdated source material and more on a contemporary 21st-century plot. With plenty of recent James Bond casting rumors swirling, it's only...

This Movie Star Threatened to Beat Up the Cast of ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’
Image
Thanksgiving is a time to visit family, eat food with family and scream at said family over their terrible politics after three glasses of red wine. But it’s also a time to watch countless hours of Mystery Science Theater 3000, thanks to their annual “Turkey Day” marathon.

The show is predicated on the idea that it’s fun for people (and robots) to make fun of cheesy old movies. Which does beg the question: Have any of MST3K’s cinematic targets ever gotten upset at the show? Well, yeah.

The most famous example of a movie star taking umbrage with the residents of the Satellite of Love involved actor Joe Don Baker, the star of Mitchell, a 1975 procedural about a slovenly rogue cop who gets results, dammit.

Mystery Science Theater 3000’s Mitchell episode was one of their very best. But they were particularly rough on Baker, whose...

The Greatest Action Movies Of The 1990s, Ranked
Image
The 1990s were a decade full of fun, edgy, and over-the-top movies, from a wave of parody franchises to cheesy horror movies. Arguably the decade's most defining corner of cinema was its gritty, action-packed, and often comedic action movies. These ranged from continuations of established franchises to fresh film series that introduced a new generation of action heroes, some of which continue to this day.

The '90s remain a favorite decade for action fans, as actors like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, and Bruce Willis starred in some of their greatest films. It was also here that actors like Will Smith and Keanu Reeves made a name for themselves as new action heroes. Ranging from genre-bending martial arts movies to buddy cop franchises, the decade delivered action buffs everything they wanted and then some. Some of the genre's greatest movies were released during the decade, and their popularity continues into the present.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Big Valley
Image
Big screen Westerns might've been falling out of favor at the U.S. box office in 1965 (thus paving the way for Spaghetti Westerns to become a surprise sensation when Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy rode into movie theaters throughout the course of 1967), but television Westerns were still swaggering their way to strong ratings thanks to "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke," and the hybrid Western/spy/sci-fi series "The Wild Wild West." And with "Rawhide" finally drawing to a close that year (thereby allowing its star Clint Eastwood to become a modern Western star), there was suddenly room for a new, sudsy, ranch-bound saga about scheming landowners and warring heirs.

"The Big Valley" whooped it up for a solid four-season run, running out of steam in 1969 at around the same moment the television Westerns began going the way of classical big screen oaters. Until then, viewers were hooked on the doings at the Barkley Ranch,...

We talk a lot about the top of the pile when discussing horror novels and novelists. Obviously, the top of that pile is a certain man by the name of Stephen King. However, if you were going to have a Mount Rushmore of authors with him, I’m throwing the great Michael Crichton up there with him in one of the other 3 spots. Yeah, I know he’s not known as a hardcore horror guy, or even really a horror guy at all, I know for a fact his most well-known work Jurassic Park scared the bejesus out of a whole generation of kids. Legendary actor Tim Curry is heading back to the big screen with his role in an upcoming horror film. The news has previous co-star of the Rocky Horror Picture Show icon hoping for a third collaboration.

In the 1990s, Bubba Ho-Tep star Bruce Campbell appeared in Congo and McHale's Navy, two films which also starred Curry. After the announcement that Curry was coming back to film with his role in the horror movie Stream, Campbell took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to the news. Hopeful that this might mean that a third movie together could happen next, the Ash vs. Evil Dead star said, "Great news! I worked with Tim on two American classics, Congo and McHales Navy - lets go for three!"

Dame Judi Dench Raves About Seeing Pierce Brosnan for the First Time on GoldenEye Set: ‘Be Still, Beating Heart’
Image
Judi Dench raves about first seeing Pierce Brosnan on the GoldenEye set: "Be still, beating heart." Dench appeared as M in seven 007 movies, matching the number of Bond films both Roger Moore and Sean Connery appeared in, which includes Connery's non-canon stint in Never Say Never Again (1983). Dench starred alongside the last two actors to portray James Bond, Brosnan and Daniel Craig, highlighting their different takes on the iconic MI6 agent.

Dame Judi Dench broke boundaries in the world of James Bond by becoming the first actress to portray 007's boss, M, in 1995’s GoldenEye. The role originated on screen courtesy of the late Bernard Lee in Dr. No back in 1962. Coincidentally, GoldenEye also marked Pierce Brosnan’s initial portrayal of the British secret agent. And Dench vividly remembers seeing Brosnan on set for the very first time as filming got underway, calling him "an adorable man." Dench said...

Scenes that Make James Bond Feel Like a Superhero
Image
The name's Bond, James Bond, a British super-spy who has run, jumped, shot, seduced, blown up, and sped across the silver screen for over half a century. At this point, Bond begins to feel more like a superhero than just a British secret agent. James Bond spans several actors whose careers were bolstered or broken by the experience but never forgotten for their charming, campy, and action-packed adventures. At this point, James Bond films had been such a staple of the serial adventure genre that newer films, starting at Casino Royale and ending at No Time To Die, began building a narrative between them to break the plot-recycling that was slowly plaguing previous scripts.

These films also added a more introspective look into James Bond in a humanizing way, showing audiences his trauma and how he is trying to redeem his previous ways as a philandering and stubborn spy. Despite this,...

‘Cape Fear’ TV Series From Spielberg, Scorsese and Nick Antosca in Development
Image
A TV series based on Universal’s “Cape Fear” is in the works with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Nick Antosca.

The show, which is in development from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Amblin, would mark Scorsese and Spielberg’s first ever TV project together. They executive produce with Antosca, who is also the showrunner and created true crime and horror dramas like “Channel Zero,” “The Act” and “Brand New Cherry Flavor.” Other executive producers include Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin Television and Alex Hedlund from Eat the Cat.

Here’s the logline for the “Cape Fear” re-imagining: “A storm is coming for a pair of married attorneys when an infamous killer from their past gets released after years in prison. A tense, contemporary thriller that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century.”

The original “Cape Fear” was released in 1962, was...

Conny Van Dyke, Motown Singer and ‘W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings’ Star, Dies at 78
Image
Conny Van Dyke, a singer-songwriter signed to Motown Records who starred in such films as “W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings” and “Framed,” has died. She was 78.

Van Dyke died on Nov. 11 at her home in Los Angeles due to complications of vascular dementia, her son Bronson Page told Variety.

The Detroit native was a longtime colon cancer and stroke survivor. She got her start in the entertainment industry when she was just 15 and a student in high school, making the film “Among the Thorns” with Tom Laughlin, Bill Wellman Jr. and Stephanie Powers. During that time, Van Dyke also worked as a songwriter for Wheelsville Records in Detroit.

In 1961, Van Dyke signed with Motown Records, making her one of the first white recording artists on the label. Her first two singles, “Oh, Freddy,” written by Smokey Robinson, and “It Hurt Me Too,” previously written and recorded by Marvin Gaye, were...

‘The Monk and the Gun’ Review: Bhutan’s Terrific Oscar Contender Offers Sly Critique of Western Influence
Image
What would a monk want with a gun? Bringing wisdom and a streak of wry humor to his Bhutan-set sophomore feature, “The Monk and the Gun,” director Pawo Choyning Dorji teases any number of possible answers to that question over the course of a droll, shrewdly satirical fable, in which Western values crash against a seemingly intransigent (but potentially more enlightened) South Asian culture.

A gifted storyteller who keeps audiences guessing about his characters’ motives until the surprising moment everything comes together, Dorji was born in Bhutan, but attended university in Wisconsin. That uncommon mix of influences gives him a unique perspective on both his home country and the way the sparsely populated, slow-to-modernize kingdom is perceived by the outside world (Bhutan was basically the last corner of the world to get internet access). The director’s natural human-interest sensibility earned devoted fans — and an unexpected Oscar nomination — for his appealing 2019 debut,...

The Best Mystery Science Theater 3000 Movies to Watch Without the Bots
Image
We all know Mystery Science Theater 3000 as the show in which a human host and a couple of robots make fun of bad movies. According to in-universe lore, the movies come via mad scientist members of the Forrester family, who test the sanity of a human subject by forcing them to watch terrible films. The humans — beginning with Joel Robinson (series creator Joel Hodgson), followed by Mike Nelson (Michael J. Nelson), Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray), and Emily Connor (Emily Marsh) — fight back by riffing on the films, a task made easier not just by the robot sidekicks Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, but also by the genuine awfulness of the movies.

But MST3K didn’t always have mockery in mind as its central premise. As seen in the recently-unearthed early episodes recorded for Minneapolis public access channel Ktma, Joel spent more time enjoying Invaders from the Deep and Revenge...

James Bond's Themes Got a Much-Needed Update With Tina Turner
Image
The late Tina Turner left a significantly smaller footprint in the movies than she did in music, but she always made her film projects so memorable. That includes "GoldenEye," the theme song to the 1995 James Bond film of the same name. Turner performs the song over the opening credits, and it was later included in her 1996 album Wildest Dreams.

The title song to a Bond film is a singular honor in the music world. Spaces are limited and the image-conscious spy franchise doesn't go with flash-in-the-pan acts for its theme songs. Turner's powerful voice makes a perfect fit for 007's often over-the-top music, and had the track record to prove it in 1995. But more than that, the Bond films were at a precarious point, and the success of Turner's song played a part in pulling it out of a tailspin.

Quentin Tarantino Pays Tribute To ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ Star Rick Dalton On Podcast
Image
Quentin Tarantino announced via series of tweets last week the death of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’s leading man, Rick Dalton. He made the announcement via The Video Archives podcast, which he hosts with Pulp Fiction cowriter Roger Avary, and indicated that today’s podcast would be “a memorial episode designed by Quentin that features some of Rick’s best roles.”

The director made good on that promise.

“On May 19, 2023, actor Rick Dalton passed away peacefully in his home in Honolulu, Hawaii,” announces Avary’s daughter Gala — who produces the show — at the opening of the podcast. “He is survived by his wife, Francesca. Dalton was beloved by fans of Bounty Law, where he played bounty hunter Jake Cahill for five seasons and also for his iconic role as Eddie Karpinski, the flamethrower-wielding vigilante in The Fireman, The Fireman Part 2, and The Fireman 3: CIA Crackdown. But he...

Gozu Announce New Album, Return with Single “Tom Cruise Control”: Stream
Image
Gozu have announced a new album, Remedy, their first LP in five years. In advance of its May 19th release, the Boston band has unveiled the cleverly named single “Tom Cruise Control.”

The track gives off heavy Alice in Chains vibes with its thick riffs, compelling guitar arrangement, and the husky-yet-melodic vocals of singer-guitarist Marc Gaffney. Rather than letting their riffs repeat ad nauseam, Gozu steer the song into atmospheric asides that add an emotional weight not always found in heavy psych or stoner rock. Appropriately, the band is letting the music do the talking.

“‘Tom Cruise Control’ will take you riding into the danger zone,” the band stated in a press release. “Turn ‘n burn.”

Remedy was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Dean Baltulonis at Wild Arctic studios in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It follows 2018’s Equilibrium and marks the end of an extended break for the band.

“There is...

Cape Fear (1991) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Martin Scorsese at an event for Golden Globe Awards (2010)
It’s time for a new episode of our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and this time we’re looking back at director Martin Scorsese‘s 1991 version of Cape Fear (watch it Here). To find out what went into the making of Scorsese’s take on the concept, check out the video embedded above!

Scorsese directed Cape Fear from a screenplay by Wesley Strick. The film was based on the novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald, which had previously received a film adaptation (also titled Cape Fear) in 1962. Scorsese’s Cape Fear has the following synopsis:

When attorney Sam Bowden knowingly withholds evidence that would acquit violent sex offender Max Cady of rape charges, Max spends 14 years in prison. But after Max’s release, knowing about Sam’s deceit, he devotes his life to stalking and destroying the Bowden family. When practical attempts to stop Max fail,...

MST3K Turkey Day 2022: How to Watch the Marathon This Thanksgiving
Image
Mystery Science Theater 3000 goes with Thanksgiving Day like turkey goes with gravy. The show made its debut on Thanksgiving back in 1988 and there have been many, many Turkey Day marathons throughout the years, no matter if the show itself was active or not. Usually, MST3K Turkey Day meant getting to see six beloved episodes in a row over the course of the day. If you were lucky, there would be news about the next time we would see the show make a comeback.

Turkey Day 2022 is a different feathered beast. Right now, MST3K is in the tail end of its thirteenth season. Since March of this year, new episodes have been debuting on the Gizmoplex, a streaming service dedicated to riff-based entertainment. Twelve of the thirteen episodes have aired so far (one of which is in 3D!), while we’re just weeks away from Christmas Dragon.

With MST3K in full swing right now,...

Take A Plunge As Quentin Tarantino Comes Of Age During The Era Of Auteur ’70s Films: The Deadline Q&a
Image
Quentin Tarantino’s second book, Cinema Speculation, is as hard to put down as his “novelization” of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His film education began at age 7, when he quickly warmed to the violent R-rated movies he makes today. Now, the mission for this interview was not to get Tarantino to rehash controversies for soundbites — like answering yet again what he wished he could have done to stop Harvey Weinstein’s predatory path or talking about his next film. Tarantino’s also keeping his multi-ep TV series plan quiet, the one he dropped on Elvis Mitchell. He did say he would only...

Recommended New Books on Filmmaking: Quentin Tarantino, Paul Newman, Steven Spielberg, Hayao Miyazaki & More

We have a lot to cover in this, our last roundup of new and recent books on film and pop culture before year’s end—high-profile memoirs, the coolest collection of crossword puzzles in history, a dash of Mac & Me. So, let’s get right to it. Happy holidays, and happy reading!

Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino (Harper)

Quentin Tarantino wrote one of 2021’s most notable film-related books, a tremendous novelization of his own Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He follows that success with what just might be 2022’s best film-related books, Cinema Speculation. It is a collection of essays built around films seen during his adolescence that impacted him greatly. Some, like Deliverance and Taxi Driver, are canon. Others, like 1973 crime drama The Outfit, are not. The experience of reading Speculation is akin to hearing Tarantino zip through his childhood movie habits—the text mostly focuses on films...

James Bond Villains Ranked from Worst to Best
David Will No
This article contains No Time to Die spoilers.

The name’s Bond, James Bond. It’s one of the most iconic lines in cinema, said canonically by six actors to date. And each 007 performer has surely offered an interesting and distinctive interpretation of the character, helping to build the franchise’s overall allure decade after decade, and generation after generation. Yet almost as important as these movies’ heroes are their villains; the scheming megalomaniacs who transformed the 60-year-old Bond franchise into a cinematic legend.

Right down to the first Bond film released by Eon Productions in 1962, Dr. No, a mission’s target has been as nearly important as the man in the tux. After all, Dr. No isn’t named after James. Twenty-five movies later that feels still vital, with the most popular entry of Daniel Craig’s tenure, 2012’s Skyfall, being remembered as much for Javier Bardem’s demonic...
