The Force Awakens and it's Oscar legacy
Image
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. It was a monumental movie not just for the franchise but pop culture as it broke the record for being the highest-grossing film in North American history.

It also reached new heights in filmmaking. When it was time for Academy Awards nominations, the film received five. It was the most for a Star Wars film since 1977 when A New Hope received 11. The nominations marked a turn for the franchise as it proved that Star Wars once again could be viewed as a cinematic and critical achievement as much as a box office smash.

The categories the film was nominated for were film editing, original score, sound mixing and editing, and special effects. The nomination for film editing was the first time a film in the franchise was honored in the category since A New Hope.

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ awards submissions: Who’s in lead? Who’s in supporting?
Image
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has revealed to Gold Derby its awards submissions strategy for the 2025 Oscars and other upcoming kudos. Directed by Tim Burton, this highly anticipated sequel to 1988’s “Beetlejuice” opened on Sept. 6, 2024, and was able to cross the $100 million mark in the U.S. within only three days. He truly is the ghost with the most!

The Warner Bros. movie takes place more than three decades after the first installment, with Michael Keaton‘s titular demon once again antagonizing the Deetz family, including Winona Ryder‘s Lydia and Catherine O’Hara‘s Delia. This time around, there are new characters in the form of Jenna Ortega‘s Astrid (the daughter of Lydia), Monica Bellucci‘s Delores Laferve (the ex-wife of Beetlejuice), Justin Theroux‘s Rory (the boyfriend of Lydia), Arthur Conti‘s Jeremy Frazier (Astrid’s new love interest), and Willem Dafoe‘s Wolf Jackson (an Afterlife detective).

Robert Pattinson ‘Ready’ To Return As Edward in ‘Twilight’ Reboot: And Kristen …
Image
The upcoming Twilight reboot could happen with Robert Pattinson reprising his role as Edward, if the producers want it.

The last Twilight film was released in 2012, and for 10 long years, fans have been eager to return to the world of glittering vampires by any means necessary.

Of course, the ideal scenario would be if the original cast – which includes Robert, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner – were attached in some way.

Given that their supernatural characters are ageless, that seemed like a pipe dream.

But some new news about the future of the franchise has given fans hope, especially considering how eager the Og stars are to return to Forks!

2023 Oscars Best Sound nominees: 8 past champs, 3 veterans and 12 rookies
Image
Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy combined their Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the third annual Best Sound prize are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Top Gun: Maverick” (16/5) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (9/2), “Elvis” (9/2), and “The Batman” (9/2).

The 23 craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a whopping 72 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work. The one responsible for the largest chunk is Andy Nelson, whose dual bids for “The Batman” and “Elvis” bring him to a record-fortifying career total of 24. He is now the third person to receive two nominations at once in this consolidated category, after “Mank” and “Soul” sound engineers Ren Klyce and...

Oscars Best Sound overview: Big and bombastic are the name of the game
Image
To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.

There are also useful precursors for the category, such as the Cinema Audio Society Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which give a clearer picture of which of the five Oscar nominees are considered the best by their direct peers.

As with some of the other below-the-line crafts categories, this doesn’t always have a direct correlation with Best Picture,...

2023 Oscars: Best Sound Predictions
Image
The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” Last year, this prize went to “Dune.”

The sound branch determines the nominees in two stages. First, members of the branch cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters, announced on December 21, moving on to the second stage. Members who attend screenings of excerpts from these 10 semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated.

It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

Andy Nelson, Will Files, Douglas Murray, Stuart Wilson (‘The Batman’ sound team): ‘Very different take on the character’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“I don’t know if there’s ever been a Batman film so intimately from Bruce’s point of view emotionally,” reflects sound editor Will Files about “The Batman.” For our recent webchat he continues, “Even something as spectacular as the batmobile chase, you are with Bruce the whole time.” Watch the full exclusive interview with the Oscar-nominated sound team above.

“The Batman” is a new iteration of the iconic caped crusader with director and co-writer Matt Reeves exploring Gotham City as a noir drama. In it, Batman (Robert Pattinson) is a crime-fighting detective who needs to solve riddles and uncover corruption to foil a serial killer targeting politicians.

Andy Nelson was the re-recording mixer on the film. He previously won Oscars for his sound work on “Les Miserables” (2013) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998). The mixer explains, “Matt allows things to build and doesn’t try to rush a sequence.

No Escape starring Ray Liotta comes to Blu-ray for the first time from Unearthed Classics
Image
It’s the futuristic year of 2022. An awful incident had taken place in Benghazi. It’s a world where big corporations now run an essential function of society. It’s a bleak and depressing vision where people’s movements can be tracked by satellites. It seems like human nature de-evolves back to a blood-thirsty, and primitive instinct with warring factions convinced it’s survival of the fittest in a dystopian society that’s a prison.

This, ironically, also happens to be the backdrop of the 1994 film No Escape. The cult film came from future Goldeneye and The Mask of Zorro director Martin Campbell and starred the late, great Ray Liotta. The movie will be released for the first time on Blu-ray from Unearthed Classics. The Blu-ray will feature new interviews with director Campbell, producer Gale Anne Hurd, and co-writer Joel Gross.

The plot revolves around a prison system run by corporations,...

Watch Robert Pattinson And Jeffrey Wright In The Batman DC FanDome: Hall Of Heroes Trailer
Image
DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes wrapped up with a 30-minute discussion with director Matt Reeves about The Batman, and it did not disappoint. Introduced by Robert Pattinson and moderated by DC FanDome host Aisha Tyler, the fast-talking Reeves covered quite a bit over the course of the panel, including giving fans a pretty clear idea of what sort of story they’re in for when The Batman debuts in October of next year.

https://www.thebatman.com/

As had been discussed before, The Batman is set during Bruce Wayne’s second year as a crimefighter, meaning it’s not an origin, but the Dark Knight is clearly still establishing himself and becoming the hero he’ll eventually become. As Reeves made clear, “He’s far from perfect.” While Batman is no longer a new presence in Gotham City when The Batman starts, he’s not having the affect on the...

Watch the First Teaser Trailer for The Batman
Image
The first trailer for The Batman has arrived and it does not disappoint! With Matt Reeves in the director's chair, I had no doubt we were getting something special, but I'm totally on board for this seemingly Batman: Zero Year-inspired take. The trailer gives us a good look at Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, as well as Jeffrey Wright as Jame Gordin, while giving us a glimpse of Paul Dano as The Riddler and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think:

"From Warner Bros. Pictures comes “The Batman,” with director Matt Reeves (the “Planet of the Apes” films) at the helm and with Robert Pattinson starring as Gotham City’s vigilante detective, Batman, and billionaire Bruce Wayne.

Also in the star-studded ensemble as Gotham’s famous and infamous cast of characters are Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle; Paul...

Parasite Becomes First International Film To Win Best Picture At 92nd Academy Awards
Parasite – Bong Joon Ho

Neon’s film Parasite made Oscar history by becoming the first foreign language film to win Best Picture during the 92nd Academy Awards. Nominated for six Oscars, the film walked away on Sunday night with four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay.

Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Parasite previously won the Palme d’Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival as well as top honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

Only 11 international feature films have ever been nominated in the Best Picture category. Bong Joon Ho became the first South Korean to ever win the best director Oscar.

During his acceptance speech he said, “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is “the most personal is the most creative.

Oscars 2020: Though It Lost Best Picture, ‘1917’ Dominated the Crafts Awards
Stuart Wilson plays Don Rafael Montero
Though it lost Best Picture, “1917,” Sam Mendes’ single-shot, World War I extravaganza, was rewarded with the most crafts Oscars Sunday night. For its technical virtuosity it received three awards, powered by cinematographer Roger Deakins’ second win for his brilliant camera choreography.

Deakins was joined by the sound mixing team of Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for their intricate soundscape as part of the continuous-shot narrative, and, surprisingly, Mpc Film (the dark horse winner) for VFX. Ironically, though, Mpc’s win overshadowed its own innovative virtual production and photoreal animation on Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King.” Yet this supporting visual effects work played an integral role in making stitches invisible and creating CG environments (including No Man’s Land and the burning village of Écoust).

Meanwhile, Pixar won its 10th animated feature Oscar for “Toy Story 4,” and “Hair Love,” the black father-daughter bonding work, took home the animated short Oscar.

‘1917’: Creating the Sounds of World War I, With Hidden Mics and Real Soldiers
In planning the sound design for “1917,” supervising sound editor Oliver Tarney and his team dug into the trenches to follow Schoefield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) on their perilous journey to deliver the letter about the impending German ambush beyond No Man’s Land.

“There were two factors we needed to consider when designing the soundscape,” said Tarney. “The first was how to best help the audience inhabit the same world as Schofield and Blake by only revealing the world as it was revealed to them; the second was the additional level of responsibility that we, along with music [by Oscar-nominated composer Thomas Newman], were tasked with in affecting the overall pacing and dynamics of the film.”

In other words, the sound ran in parallel with cinematographer Roger Deakins’ choreographed dance with the camera. And yet without the ability to cut to a different location to reset, the team had to be...

Sam Mendes on the Emotional Challenges Facing His ‘1917’ Artisan Team
George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman in 1917 (2019)
There were unique challenges in Sam Mendes’ vision for “1917.” The director wanted the movie to appear as if it were filmed in one continuous take. And that required months of meticulous planning. Mendes says the long prep time and unprecedented demands created an “unusually unified crew.” Here, he pays tribute to some of them.

Roger Deakins, cinematographer

“The choice to shoot in one shot was an emotional choice: How do we link the audience as closely as possible to the life of these two men? We said, ‘Let’s not talk about how to engineer the mechanics of it; in terms of emotion, where would the camera go?’ We had various rigs, and the decision of each was determined by the emotional content of the scene. Much of the filming was outdoors. There is one carefully constructed lighting sequence lit by Roger, in the nighttime town. The town is lit first by flares,...

Sound Mixers and Editors Stretch Their Skills to Create Believable Worlds
Adrian Bell
With giant interstellar battles, historic car races and intimate moments with iconic performers on the line, the sound teams behind many of the year’s best films stretched to design next-level soundscapes.

Live performances just about always prove tricky, but Adrian Bell, production sound mixer for “Judy,” was able to find things in them that became essential to telling the story of fading icon Judy Garland.

“The aim is to make the performance look completely believable, that the music and vocals are being performed right there in the location,” Bell says. “Some of the challenges here included mixing some of our work with the pre-recorded music and vocals that had been laid down before we started filming. There are also various nuances within a performance, which makes the song come alive, such as breaths, footsteps, pauses in the song, microphone-handling noise and crying. These are all added on to the...
