Are you in the mood for an underrated neo-noir that comes highly recommended by Guillermo del Toro? Well, I’ve got just what you need to scratch that very specific itch. I’m talking about a forgotten Alec Baldwin movie called Miami Blues. The Mimic director is a big fan of the film, that much is apparent from a previous Twitter (it will never be X to me) post.

Guillermo del Toro’s status update reads: “Film: Miami Blues by George Ermitage [sic]. One of the key sunny-noir movies of the end of the 20th century. High-precision acting and writing.”

Miami Blues is adapted from the novel of the same name by Charles Willeford. George Armitage takes the sole screenwriting credit in addition to helming.

Beloved director of such iconic films as Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, George Armitage, has died at 82. A popular director in the '90s and Roger Corman protégé, known for his dark comedies, he also helmed the 1972 Blaxploitation film called Hit Man. The news was confirmed by his son, the writer-producer Brent Armitage.

Born and briefly raised in Hartford, Connecticut, Armitage's family moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s. His first job in the industry was in the mail room at 20th Century Fox, which led to him getting into production on television shows. He worked as an associate producer on the soap opera Peyton Place starting in 1967, and leveraged that experience to get in with the folks at Roger Corman's New World Pictures. Corman was a revolutionary in the industry, creating an entire ecosystem of micro-budget films that gave many Hollywood mega-talents their start.

Raised in Hartford, Conn., Armitage started out in the 20th Century Fox mailroom before becoming associate producer on the long-running series “Peyton Place” in the 1960s. He met Roger Corman on the Fox lot and moved into feature films, writing the Corman-produced 1970 comedy “Gas! – Or – It Became Necessary to Destroy the World in Order to Save It.”

He continued making films for Corman and his brother Gene Corman, moving into directing with “Private Duty Nurses.” The 1972 Blaxploitation film “Hit Man,” which he directed and co-wrote, starred Pam Grier and Bernie Casey. A sprightly and mischievous cameo from Mick Jagger is one reason to enjoy this movie. Donald Sutherland’s brief performance as a reclusive artist is another. It’s a suspense drama-thriller from Oscar-nominated screenwriter Scott Smith who has adapted the 1971 novel by crime author Charles Willeford. Claes Bang plays a somewhat raffish and disreputable Milan-based art critic, James Figueras. He is an egotistical individual with a morbid fear of flies.

Figueras is having a passionate affair with a beautiful American, Berenice (Elizabeth Debicki), who dropped in to one of Figueras’s breezy, specious lectures and was amused in spite of herself. The studio said Tuesday that the movie will still be the first wide release of the summer. Last week, Warner Bros. moved Christopher Nolan’s spy thriller “Tenet” off July 17 and on to July 31.

What a missed opportunity we have here. For two thirds of The Burnt Orange Heresy, this art world centered suspense film does a lot of things right. Mick Jagger was a good get for “Burnt Orange Heresy” producers in more ways than one. They knew the Rolling Stones frontman would raise awareness of the indie project — at the very least, there was sure to be curiosity about his first credited movie role since 2002’s “The Man From Elysian Fields” – but he also helped backers qualify for European subsidies.

And they were definitely trying to do that.

Adapted from Charles Willeford’s 1971 novel, the feature stars Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki, Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland. The screenplay is by Scott Smith who is best known for his 1993 novel “A Simple Plan” which was adapted into an acclaimed 1998 film directed by Sam Raimi.

The 76th Venice International Film Festival will close with the world premiere of The Burnt Orange Heresy, Giuseppe Capotondi’s art drama starring Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki, Donald Sutherland and Mick Jagger.

The film will screen out of competition on Saturday September 7 in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema on Venice’s Lido, following the closing awards ceremony.

The English-language art heist movie marks Italian director Giuseppe Capotondi’s first time back at Venice since 2009, when his debut feature film, the taut thriller “The Double Hour,” made a splash on the Lido. That film won its star, Kseniya Rappoport, the best actress prize.

Described as a contemporary “erotic neo-noir thriller” in the festival’s synopsis, “The Burnt Orange Heresy” sees charismatic art critic James Figueras (Bang) hook up with provocative and alluring fellow American Berenice Hollis (Debicki). “He’s a classic anti-hero in the making with a charm that masks his ambition, whilst she’s an innocent touring Europe, enjoying the freedom of being whoever she wishes,” the festival said.

The pair star alongside Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland in director Giuseppe Capotondi’s story about an American art critic who must steal a masterpiece in exchange for a potentially career-transforming deal.

HanWay Films is handling international sales rights on the title at Afm and CAA and UTA Independent Film Group are managing the Us sale.
