Romford Film Festival 2025: ‘Razor Blade Smile’ (4k Restoration) Review
Image
Review by Jack Oxford

Stars: Eileen Daly, Christopher Adamson, Jonathan Coote, Kevin Howarth, David Warbeck, Heidi James, Isabel Brook, Louisa Moore | Written and Directed by Jake West

What makes a B-movie a B-movie? Is the label an insult, or something more neutral?

Jake West’s Razor Blade Smile thoroughly embraces its status as a B-movie, especially given its status as the winner of the inaugural B-Movie Film Festival in numerous categories. Though I haven’t seen the other contenders (they don’t seem to have the same cult following as Razor Blade Smile), I can see why it would stand out in a sea of pretenders.

Razor Blade Smile is led by scream queen Eileen Daly as Lilith Silver, and guess what? She’s a vampire. Not actually my first guess, she certainly could have been a witch with a name like that, but let’s not get sidetracked. Eileen...

‘The Beyond’ 4K Review – A Strong Contender for Best Physical Media Release of the Year
Image
2025 isn’t even halfway over, but Grindhouse Releasing‘s deluxe 4K Uhd edition of Lucio Fulci‘s The Beyond is a strong contender for the best physical media release of the year. From the pristine restoration to the exhaustive extras and the ravishing packaging, it’s difficult to imagine anything topping this six-disc set.

Written by Dardano Sacchetti (Demons) and Giorgio Mariuzzo (The House by the Cemetery), the 1981 Italian horror cult classic chronicles the supernatural bedlam that ensues when a gateway to Hell is opened beneath a New Orleans hotel — but a written summary of the plot is a disservice to the baroque yet ethereal atmosphere cultivated on screen.

The Beyond plays like a fever dream through a haunted attraction. Fulci brazenly merges discordant genre tropes — from zombies and possession to a chilling mystique a la The Shining and his penchant for outrageous splatter — into an economical 87 minutes that succeeds despite itself.

Sergio Leone in Il était une fois en Amérique (1984)
Review: Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dynamite on Kl Studio Classics Blu-ray
Sergio Leone in Il était une fois en Amérique (1984)
How you situate Sergio Leone’s epic, acerbic A Fistful of Dynamite within the filmmaker’s larger body of work just might depend on which title it bears when you watch it. The original Italian title, Giù la testa, is probably best rendered by the thematically appropriate Keep Your Head Down, but Leone insisted the film go out under the looser translation Duck, You Sucker! It’s a line that recurs several times throughout the film, one that Leone insisted was authentic American slang of the era, though clearly it isn’t any such thing.

The replacement title A Fistful of Dynamite attempts to link it with Leone’s earlier A Fistful of Dollars, but this one gets far darker and more serious than the more “innocent” tales of adventure that form the Dollars trilogy. Probably the most appropriate title was the one applied to it by the French: Once Upon a Time…...

The Beyond: The Composer’s Cut brings a new version of Lucio Fulci classic to theatres
Image
Forty-one years after director Lucio Fulci‘s film The Beyond (watch it Here) was released and embraced as a classic by many horror fans, a new version of the movie is now about to make its way out to theatres across the United States. Starring Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Sarah Keller, Antoine Saint-John, and Veronica Lazar, The Beyond shows what happens when a young woman inherits an old hotel only to find it sits atop a gateway to Hell and all manner of creatures lurk in the darkness.

The film is the second entry in Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” trilogy, which began with City of the Living Dead and ended with The House by the Cemetery.

For Your Eyes Only Was Not Supposed to Star Roger Moore
Image
For Your Eyes Only, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this week, was a transitional James Bond film. Released in 1981, this 12th entry in the long-running series, and Roger Moore’s fifth outing as the man in the tuxedo, was deliberately styled as a return to the 007’s roots after he went to space in the over-the-top Moonraker (1979): the one where series producers did their best to compete with Star Wars. By contrast Eyes seemed stripped down and also marked the debut of John Glen in the director’s chair—a position he would hold for a series-most five entries. He received that promotion after working on several previous installments as a second unit director.

But Eyes was also meant, at one point, to usher in the most important change in any Bond movie: the introduction of a new actor in the role of 007.

Roger Moore’s original contract was for three films,...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Twins Of Evil (1971)
Image
You got witch-hunting in my vampirism! Yeah? Well, you got vampirism in my witch-hunting! Deliciously combined, Hammer’s Twins of Evil (1971) pits religious fanaticism against vampiric seduction in the third and final film of the Karnstein trilogy, and it’s a fittingly erotic and spirited sendoff.

Released by Rank Film Distributors in the U.K. and Universal Pictures stateside, Twins of Evil was part of a double bill with Hands of the Ripper, and as these things do, brought in the casual viewer looking for a little mayhem to tide them over. Twins of Evil however, still manages to seduce the viewer through muscular filmmaking and solid performances, with the biggest draw being the stunning Collinson sisters, Mary and Madeleine, as our titular characters. They make it one of the most lascivious of the latter day Hammer films; no small feat, that.

We open on Central Europe in the late...

Stars: Al Cliver, Antônio do Cabo, Antonio Mayans, Bertrand Altmann, Gisela Hahn, Ursula Buchfellner, Werner Pochath | Written by Jess Franco, Julian Esteban | Directed by Jess Franco

Its hard to believe, but growing up I thought Jess Franco was a horror-filmmaking god; even though I’d never seen a single one of his genre films. Why? Well because I was an avid subscriber of Dark Side Magazine and the way they wrote about Franco and his films with such reverence (and some irony it would seem looking back at it now), you would have thought he was up there with the horror greats. Yet while, now, I know differently – Franco was very much a journeyman filmmaker, cranking out films at a pace unheard of today – he still has a huge fanbase out there. You only have to look at just how many of his film are available on DVD and Blu-ray,...

A Fistful of Dynamite (Duck You Sucker)
More mysterious than ever, Sergio Leone’s ode to (condemnation of?) revolution is said to be the centerpiece of his three ‘Once Upon a Time’ movies linking western violence to the modern age of brutal politics and ruthless gangsterism. Crudeness rubs shoulders with sad, beautiful images as Leone takes on a theme he claimed not to like very much. The writers Donati and Vincenzoni show him the way, while James Coburn and Rod Steiger bring to life the non-narrative moments of what becomes a broad, mural-like epic.

The Bottom Shelf: Frankenhooker, We Are The Flesh
Apr 28, 2017

Lucio Fulci, Frankenhooker and more in our round up of new horror Blu-rays and DVDs...

So, what’s your personal idea of hell? For this writer, it would almost certainly involve being chained down in the audience of an eternal live filming of Loose Women as Donald Trump waves a slice of tiger bread, forever just out of reach. Yours is likely to be similar, though it would have to be pretty grim indeed to come anywhere near Lucio Fulci’s 1981 career-best infernal vision and perhaps the definitive (obviously other than Little Nicky) cinematic depiction of eternal damnation, The Beyond.

Edgar Allan Poe’s Black Cats: Two Adaptations by Sergio Martino & Lucio Fulci | Blu-ray Review
Throughout the history of cinema there are countless adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s work, from D. W. Griffith’s early take on The Sealed Room through Roger Corman’s series of lo-fi refittings of the 60s up to last year’s attempt to adapt The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether in Stonehearst Asylum. Looking back at two loose Italian adaptations of Poe’s classic horror short The Black Cat, Arrow’s new Edgar Allan Poe’s Black Cats set sees a towering duo of giallo cinema auteurs picking and choosing their favorite elements of the original tale and molding them to their supernatural, blade-wielding will with blood-spilling glee and cinematic aplomb.

Released in 1972 on the tail end of a trio of more classically typified gialli in The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, The Case of the Scorpion’s Tail and All the Colors of the Dark, Sergio Martino...

Blu-ray Review: The Beyond
Lucio Fulci’s 1980 film The Beyond is largely regarded as his masterpiece, and it’s hard to disagree with that sentiment. The Italian filmmaker had a long and varied career working across a number of genres, including fantasy, westerns and, most famously and frequently, horror. The Beyond finds him in total control of both his obsessions and his abilities, blending his penchant for nightmare logic, abstract formalism and, of course, gushy, gushy gore. Fulci gotta Fulci.

It’s practically useless to try and explain the movie’s plot, as this isn’t a movie that’s contingent on story. Any attempt to understand what’s really going on will more than likely lead to further frustration; better to let the images and tone of the thing wash over you. It begins with the murder of a man at the hands of an angry mob, an event which opens one of...

New on Video: ‘The Beyond’
The Beyond

Directed by Lucio Fulci

Written by Dardano Sacchetti, Giorgio Mariuzzo, and Lucio Fulci

Italy, 1981

While he may not have the name recognition of George Romero or Wes Craven, Lucio Fulci has had a singular impact on the horror genre. And though his work doesn’t lend itself to the sort of pop culture familiarity that unites these and other more mainstream horror directors, what he did best within the genre, he did as well as any other filmmaker. His was a down and dirty horror: grisly, textured, elaborate, graphic. And arguably his finest achievement, certainly one that perfectly showcases his style and skill, is The Beyond (1981), out now on an extensive 3-disc collectors edition Blu-ray.

The Beyond begins in 1927 Louisiana, where the basic premise of portentous evil lurking near seven doors to hell is established. Upon one of those gateways sits an old gothic hotel, which in the present day,...

‘Twins of Evil’ & ‘Countess Dracula’ Blu-ray Review
Hammer have had something of a renaissance on Blu-ray recently, with StudioCanal releasing a number of classic titles in new hi-def editions. And now, released as part of Network’s ‘The British Film’ collection, comes two of Hammer’s “sexier” films of the 70s: the infamous Twins of Evil, starring Playboy Playmates Mary and Madeleine Collinson; and Countess Dracula, which features a career-defining performance from Ingrid Pitt in the titular role.

Despite being made during Hammer early-70s fallow period, where the studio was running out of stories, out of budget and were being left behind by more “extreme” horror films and exploitation movies emanating from the Us (after all this was just after the release of Night of the Living Dead which ultimately changed the face of the genre forever), both Twins of Evil and Countess Dracula are beloved by fans of the studio, and with good reason.

Good news is coming in for collectors of horror on Blu-ray as the Lucio Fulci classic The Beyond (Aka 7 Doors of Death) and Cannibal Holocaust are getting set to make their high definition premiere via Grindhouse Releasing!

Preliminary street dates for these upcoming releases have not yet been revealed.

The Beyond Synopsis

A young woman from New York named Liza (Katherine MacColl) inherits a Louisiana motel that has been unoccupied for nearly 60 years. While restoring the old building, many of the workers meet mysterious and untimely deaths, each more ill-fated than the next. Furthermore, Liza is visited by a blind specter named Emily (Sarah Keller), who lectures from a 4,000-year-old book of collected prophecies that explains the motel is situated above one of seven portals to hell. As her sanity dwindles, Liza finds some much-needed stability in a local doctor named John McCabe (David Warbeck), who is determined to find...

Cannibal Holocaust and The Beyond are Coming to Blu-ray
It has been officially confirmed that Grindhouse Releasing is working on a Blu-ray edition of The Beyond and Cannibal Holocaust. Both movies were previously released by Grindhouse Releasing on DVD and we’ve provided details below on the bonus features that will likely be ported over to the new high-def versions. A release date has not been specified, but we expect to see them later this year and will keep Daily Dead readers posted on any updates.

Cannibal Holocaust: “The most controversial movie ever made has finally arrived on DVD! Banned and heavily censored throughout theiworld, here is a film that surpasses its reputation as a shotgun blast to the senses. Cannibal Holocaust presents the “found footage” of four documentary filmmakers who experience brutal death at the hands of a savage South American tribe of flesh-eaters. This footage is so intense, so graphic and so unflinching in its realism...

Blu-ray Review: Ambitious ‘Cloud Atlas’ Falls Just Short of Heights to Which it Reaches
Chicago – There’s a large part of me that wants to wholeheartedly recommend and embrace “Cloud Atlas” for two reasons. One, it’s based on arguably the best book of the millennium so far, David Mitchell’s stunning masterpiece. And if more people see the movie, more are likely to read a book that everyone should experience. Two, I do agree with those who love the film that Hollywood doesn’t take risks like this often enough, and if we don’t encourage risks, we won’t get rewards. However, “Cloud Atlas” still frustrates me more than it thrills me. Maybe the book was simply un-adaptable as so many have theorized. But I think mistakes were made on top of the inherent difficulty in Mitchell’s novel.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

I stand by what I said in my theatrical review, “It comes down to this — “Cloud Atlas” is a book that possibly...

Blu Crew: Cloud Atlas Gets Detailed and Dated
Warner Bros has just dropped the details regarding the blu-ray release of the Wachowskis' latest movie, Cloud Atlas; including all the bonuses coming with it and when you'll be able to get your hands on it and bring it home.

Cloud Atlas was one of my favorite films of 2012. I thought it was an amazingly well done adaptation of the book it's based on, as well as a powerful and visually impressive story in its own right. Sadly, it didn't do as well in the box office and many people missed out on the film. I think that's a shame, but I can understand it. Marketing such a film was difficult and it's hard to show off why people should have gone to see it.

Fortunately, films that didn't get the attention they deserved in the theaters, can thrive on home releases, which is why I was so excited WB...

Check Out The Special Features and Cover Art For ‘Cloud Atlas’
A film that general audiences were either just too confused about or too timid too confront was Cloud Atlas. David Mitchell’s 2004 highly acclaimed novel was a hit with literary critics and book clubs when it was initially released but the ambitious film adaptation brought to the big-screen through the combined talents of the Wachowski’s and Tom Tykwer didn’t even break $30 million in the Us – something sadly that Identity Thief did in one weekend – and was met with some mixed reviews. Thankfully the film fared much better abroad (bringing in $80 million) and the critics that did appreciate the film’s multi-dimensional structure and inspired casting were loud and proud with their praise of the film. Cloud Atlas may have appeared on several “Worst of 2012″ lists but it broke into just as many “Best of 2012″ lists as well. There’s no doubt that it’s an experimental project that...

The Samurai Trilogy (Criterion) Director Hiroshi Inagaki’s sprawling epic filmed from 1954-56 is an early Japanese Technicolor masterpiece, rivaling the scope of filmmakers like David Lean and Luchino Visconti. Toshiro Mifune, Japan’s greatest actor, stars as real-life swordsman, artist and writer Musashi Miyamoto, following his growth from callow youth to disciplined warrior. The three films: the Oscar winning “Musashi Miyamoto,” “Duel at Ichijoji Temple,” and “Duel at Ganryu Island” are an incredible story of human growth, tender love and sublime, blood-soaked action. Not to be missed. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with translator and historian William Scott Wilson; Trailers. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

The 39 Steps (Criterion) Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 story of spies, conspiracies and sexual tension put him on the map on both sides of the Pond. Robert Donat stars as an innocent thrust into a deadly plot alongside a cool blonde (Madeleine Carroll...

'The Beyond' (1981) Review
by Chris Wright, MoreHorror.com

"And you will face the sea of darkness, and all therein may be explored.” Lucio Fulci certainly does not fail to be epic in this masterpiece called “The Beyond.” Granted I have not seen every Fulci movie but he has not failed to impress with the horror movies I have seen so far. I have yet to see any of his earlier Giallo movies. To many, “The Beyond” is part of Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” trilogy along with “City of the Living Dead” and “House by the Cemetery.” Out of the three, “The Beyond” I found to be the scariest with a solid story to back it up. You don’t see much of this movie as far as being released on formats. It was released by Anchor Bay in Widescreen 2:35:1 about a decade ago. It received a DVD release much later.

Dread Central: Six Sites Remember the Class of 1981
When Lucio Fulci concluded The Beyond with the words "And you will face the sea of darkness, and all therein that may be explored", he might as well have been referring to the banner year of 1981.

Whatever your genre poison, 1981 delivered it in spades. Werewolves ruled the box office with films that not only redefined special effects artistry but remain stellar examples of modern lycanthropic horror – even today. Elsewhere, Satan's son reared his ugly head for a final conflict while David Cronenberg explored factions of warring psychics with Scanners. Sam Raimi's Candarian demons were unleashed in a Tennessee cabin while seemingly endless droves of slashers stalked theaters across the country. Wes Craven doled out one hell of a Deadly Blessing while The Boogens broke free from a Colorado silver mine, endearing themselves to a whole band of cult aficionados who've remained loyal to a film that, thirty years later,...

The Beyond Blu-ray Review
With a gory and Gothic opening Lucio Fulci thrusts us straight into a world in which chains tear at flesh in the most grisly ways possible and the most effective way of finally finishing off a man you’re torturing and murdering is with a semi-crucifixion and a lot of acid to the face. This is The Beyond and if you find those first few minutes hard to stomach then you’re probably not prepared for the gruesome tale that Fulci unfolds in graphic detail on screen.

Aside from setting the tone and providing an opening that somewhat explains the supernatural curse at the heart of The Beyond this preface also plays out a little like a bridge between the classic Gothic film tradition and the lurid strain of horror that Fulci was a something of a master in. Never perhaps considered quite as artistically interesting as his Italian contemporaries...

The Beyond – DVD Review
Plumbers can make a hash of most jobs but the luckless chap in Lucio Fulci’s gory masterpiece, The Beyond, accidentally opens one of the seven gates of Hell. Obviously not the best move to have made.

The infamous Italian maestro worked in a variety of genres throughout his long career but made his true name in horror with several frightening (and frighteningly great) titles of which The Beyond is one. Mixing up the living dead and inspired splatter scenes with a dream-like scenario works wonders for this genuinely unsettling film.

The premise centres on Liza (Catriona MacColl), a young woman who inherits a spooky mansion in New Orleans which also happens to be built on a sacred gate leading to Hell. Once the portal is re-opened by the plumber – who subsequently gets murdered for his trouble – the collapse of logic and reason ensues to spectacular effect.

Blu Ray Review: The Beyond – An Unashamedly Terrible Treat
The undisputed gore director par excellence Lucio Fulci attracted nothing but notoriety during his 40 year career. Ridiculed by the catholic church for his excessive even passionate religious attacks, black-listed and shunned back in his Italian homeland due to his controversial subject matter and excessive gore and labelled inherently misogynistic by female critics for his unsympathetic depiction of ladies on screen; Fulci’s infamous reputation is cause for concern in itself. But Fulci films are nothing if not fabulously cinematic.

This particular terrible treat, The Beyond (1981), which is released next week on Blu-Ray, came at a time when the director was considered a bona-fide rival of Dario Argento’s. And with its sensationally orchestrated murder sequences, heart pounding hypnotic score, gothic architectural setting, banal acting and abysmal dubbing one can see why.

The film follows the emotional and physical torment of Liza Merril, a young New Yorker who inherits an old hotel in spooky Louisiana.

The Abandoned (Horrorfest Flashback Review)
With a screenplay credited to Karim (Subconscious Cruelty) Hussain, Richard (Hardware) Stanley and Nacho (Aftermath) Cerdà, and direction by Cerdà himself (making his long-awaited feature debut), you might expect The Abandoned to be some transgressive cinematic act of war, two hours of mind-twisting, boundary-smashing, subversive content that pushes the envelope until the screen actually bleeds.

In fact, the most shocking thing about The Abandoned is that it’s not just accessible, but it’s almost (gasp) mainstream. Its early scenes—in which film producer Marie (Anastasia Hille) is summoned to Russia on the eve of her 40th birthday by a peculiar solicitor (Carlos Reig) with information about her mysterious roots—wouldn’t play a note differently if they featured Julianne Moore and Bob Hoskins. So has Cerdà, the man who once made an entire film dedicated to necrophilia and postmortem mutilation, sold out and gone Hollywood?

The good news is that the answer is no.
