All the ‘Abbott Elementary’ Season 4 Emmy predictions, including those ‘Sunny’ guest stars
Image
Abbott Elementary Season 4 has received straight A's from TV critics, earning a 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But will that perfect score translate to the 2025 Emmys?

To date, ABC's school-set mockumentary has been nominated for 24 Emmys and won four: Best Comedy Actress for Quinta Brunson as Janine Teagues (2023), Best Comedy Supporting Actress for Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard (2022), Best Comedy Writing for Brunson for the pilot (2022), and Best Comedy Casting (2022). It's still waiting on that coveted victory for Best Comedy Series, for which it has been nominated for each of its first three seasons. Let's take a look at Abbott's strongest Emmy chances for Season 4, category by category.

Best Comedy Series

As usual, there will be eight slots for this series race, and Abbott Elementary is sitting pretty in fifth place. The fact that Abbott is one of the funniest shows in contention should work in its benefit, especially...

Abbott Elementary’s Most Surprising Friendship Addressed By Star Chris Perfetti
Image
Chris Perfetti from Abbott Elementary is opening up about the show's most surprising friendship, the one between his character, Jacob Hill, and Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter). When the show began, no one would have ever thought that Jacob and Melissa would have the friendship they do now. Melissa has been a teacher at Abbott Elementary for many years, unlike Jacob, and has a more realistic view of what it means to be a teacher and what comes with it, compared to Jacob. Despite these differences, Melissa and Jacob became roommates in season 3 following his breakup with Zach.

During an interview with ScreenRant, Perfetti discussed Jacob and Melissa's unlikely friendship and whether their relationship had changed at all since they became roommates. Jacob and Melissa’s friendship has remained mostly the same since season 1 and is the perfect example of how opposites attract. Despite their very different personalities, they’ve...

‘Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph Reveals Which ’It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Character She’d Like To Do a Spin-Off With
Image
There was something incredibly wholesome about Abbott Elementary’s side of their crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. No, it wasn’t Kaitlin Olson’s Sweet Dee trying to seduce Gregory (Tyler James Williams) away from Janine (Quinta Brunson) or Frank’s (Danny DeVito) suggestion of using pelts soaked in urine as a way to deter raccoons from digging up the community garden. While the other members of Sunny’s infamous gang were causing chaos, Charlie Day’s character, Charlie, was learning a new skill thanks to educators Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter).

Fans of the raucous FX comedy will know that Charlie’s illiteracy has long been a running gag, but that simply wouldn’t stand for the two teachers. And, according to Ralph, who spoke with Collider’s Aidan Kelley on the red carpet for the Newport Beach TV Fest over the weekend,...

Image
“It think it’s an incredible time to be funny,” “Abbott Elementary” star Lisa Ann Walter said at the TheWrap’s “Keeping it Fresh: Careers That Keep Evolving” panel as part of the inaugural Women of Comedy Emmy Showcase.

So having had all this time in between to do a number of different jobs and raise my children and come into a show as a woman of my age, and owning my talent and my power is incredible for me.”

7 Great TV Crossovers, From ‘Newhart’ to ‘Abbott Elementary’ Meets ‘Sunny’
Image
Who doesn’t love a good crossover? Some of audiences very favorite episodes are the ones where characters from an entirely different show pop up, like when two “ER” doctors showed up on “Friends,” when Sam and Dean got sucked into an episode of “Scooby-Doo,” or, most recently, when “9-1-1” LAPD sergeant Athena Grant took an unplanned cruise aboard the Odyssey.

Most of the time, these special episodes happen because they are on the same network, or are from the same producer, but sometimes they just happen because they are entertaining as hell … or the show’s creators are big fans of each other, as was the case with Quinta Brunson of “Abbott Elementary” and Rob McElhenney of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

Here are some of our favorite TV crossovers:

CBS Fills ‘After Midnight’ Slot With ‘Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen’
Image
CBS is betting on another show to fill the gap left by “The Late Late Show With James Corden.” Starting in September, “Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen” will take over the 12:30 a.m. slot from “After Midnight.”

The series will officially air at 12:37 a.m. Et on Sept. 22 with back-to-back, half-hour episodes. Episodes of the comedy talk show will then air Monday through Friday, with the series also available to stream live on Paramount+ for subscribers that have Paramount+ with Showtime.

For decades, CBS had a pretty solid late night formula. “The Late Show” at 11:30 p.m. was followed by “The Late Late Show” an hour later. But when Corden announced he was stepping away from the franchise to spend more time with his family, the network announced it was ending the show that had been on the air since 1995. “The Late Late Show” officially ended in...

Janelle James Teases Who Will “Act the Fool” on the 'Abbott Elementary'/'Always Sunny' Crossover
Image
Earlier this year, worlds collided when the degenerates of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia invaded the more wholesome environs of Abbott Elementary. This summer, the tables will be turned, as Abbott's faculty heads to Paddy's Pub. But who will stay above the fray, and who will take advantage of Always Sunny's more R-rated milieu? Janelle James, who plays Abbott principal and queen bee Ava Coleman, says viewers might be surprised. She made the comments on a recent episode of Entertainment Weekly's The Awardist podcast.

Although one might expect the extroverted Ava to be a key participant in the kind of depravity the Always Sunny crew usually gets up to, James reveals that she takes more on a supervisory role: "Ava is kind of the ringmaster in that episode, so I'm more of a narrator for all the hijinks in that episode. I think everybody expects Ava to...

Quinta Brunson Says the 'Always Sunny' Half of the 'Abbott Elementary' Crossover Is "Way More Raunchy"
Image
Earlier this year, the worlds of Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia collided in the first half of a Philly-set crossover. The first half took place at the ABC home of Abbott, meaning the Paddy's Pub gang had their usual R-rated antics toned down. However, with the second half taking place on FX's Always Sunny, get ready to see a whole new side of Abbott's teachers. Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson discussed the other side of the crossover in a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

After a conversation with host Jimmy Kimmel that ranged from Brunson's encounter with Jill Biden at the Super Bowl and her experience at Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary special, conversation turned to the crossover. Brunson described the Always Sunny half of the crossover as "way more raunchy than ours." She added, "It was fun! It was fun seeing what Janine,...

‘Abbott Elementary’ Star Tyler James Williams on the ‘Unhinged’ Impersonations in the Season 4 Finale and Why It Was Difficult to Spoof Janine
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers from the Season 4 finale of “Abbott Elementary,” which aired Wednesday on ABC and streams Thursday on Hulu.

While “Abbott Elementary’s” Janine (show creator and star Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) are going strong in their relationship, that doesn’t mean that impersonating each other in one humorous sequence during the Season 4 finale came easily for the actors who play them.

The episode, titled “Please Touch Museum,” follows Abbott’s teachers and students on a field trip to the hands-on Philadelphia museum, which is “for babies,” according to the school’s sullen eighth graders. To cheer the preteens up, the museum guide suggests they write a play about their time at “Abbott” — one that roasts their teachers. To make matters funnier, the students cast their teachers to play one another.

“I found it difficult, actually, to do Janine because there’s...

How ‘Abbott Elementary’ Could Break ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Emmys Curse
Image
As Abbott Elementary’s “Volunteers” marked It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s first-ever crossover episode — not counting the show’s collab with the smash-hit multi-cam sitcom Old Lady House, of course — the television event could make history yet again: this time serving as The Gang’s first successful bid at desperately trying to win an award.

The beloved ABC series is reportedly staking its claim on the Sunny side of awards season, submitting Kaitlin Olson, Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney as potential nominees for two of the Emmys’ guest star categories, per Gold Derby. A running bit throughout It’s Always Sunny’s 17 seasons, the series has never earned an Emmy nod for anything beyond stunt coordination, making this mere consideration a particularly big W for The Gang.

It remains unclear why the Abbott Elementary overlords omitted Danny Devito from the running — do piss-soaked fur pelts mean nothing these days? — but...

‘Abbott Elementary’ Creator Quinta Brunson Says Facing Criticism From Black Women Over Janine’s Imperfections ‘Was a Challenge’ | Video
Image
Creator Quinta Brunson is decorated with plenty of Hollywood accolades for populating her “Abbott Elementary” with memorable and hilarious three-dimensional characters. But sitting with Amy Poehler on her new “Good Hang” podcast, the Emmy winner shared that her own Janine Teagues was met with criticism from Black women because she was not perfectly put together. She remembered it feeling like Janine was expected to be representative of all Black women.

“I’ll be real with you: She’s a Black character … Black audiences have so few representative characters on screen, and Black womanhood alone is so touchy,” Brunson shared. “So when a lot of women were seeing Janine not present as they wanted her to, that became tough — and I understand it.”

She said that her aim is to create character where “the show doesn’t care what the audience thinks,” but that “that was a challenge with Janine.”

‘Abbott Elementary’ is submitting most of the ‘Sunny’ Gang at the Emmys
Image
Abbott Elementary is submitting the Gang at the Emmys — but not all.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Kaitlin Olson, Charlie Day, and Rob McElhenney, who guest-starred in an Abbott-Sunny crossover in January, are among ABC comedy's guest acting submissions. Conspicuously absent are Danny DeVito and Glenn Howerton, who appeared in the episode as well. Howerton, however, only made a brief cameo (due to scheduling conflicts with Netflix's Sirens) and does not meet the 5 percent screen time rule for guest submissions.

Abbott's other guest actress entrant is Talia Shire, who plays Melissa's (Lisa Ann Walter) mom, Teresa Schemmenti. Keith David, who plays Frank, Ava's (Janelle James) estranged father, and Gregory's (Tyler James Williams) barber, is the other guest actor submission.

These are just the network/studio's submissions; anyone can personally submit themselves, so there's still a chance DeVito and other guest stars appear on the ballot.

Get ready for another Ava Fest in Abbott Elementary season 4 episode 20 (Preview)
Image
Ava is an icon, but we already knew that! Other than being principal at Abbott Elementary, this gal is busy with other ventures. And as she said in the previous episode, episode 19, "Music Class," working at the school was not her main source of income. Instead, there's lot of other things she does, and we got a glimpse of that last week.

Ava spins the narrative in a very Ava way when at the Teb Talk, the announcer introduces her by saying she chose to step down as principal to spend more time helping her community, she's an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and life coach too. This made me laugh so much! But one thing is clear, Ava has a huge following of people listening to her advice. And tonight's episode seems like it will extend on that.

Abbott Elementary season 4 episode 20, "Ava Fest: Tokyo Drift," premieres tonight, April 2, 2025, at 8:30 p.

‘Abbott Elementary’ Star Janelle James on Finding Out Ava Was Fired: ‘I Was Like, Do I Still Get Paid?’
Image
Janelle James became an instant fan-favorite when “Abbott Elementary” debuted in 2021. She was relatively new to the acting game when she joined the sitcom, having previously focused mainly on stand-up. But stepping into the role of the glamorous, rule-breaking school principal, Ava Coleman, brought her blunt humor and wide-eyed gags to a larger audience, earning her Emmy nominations for three years in a row and constant praise from critics.

In the beginning of the series, Ava came off as incompetent and uncaring, constantly causing problems for the Abbott Elementary teachers who liked to do things by the book. But there’s always been more to Ava than meets the eye, and by Season 4, she had truly proven herself as an advocate for her students and teachers, even if her methods are rather unorthodox.

So it was a real shocker when, in the March 19 episode “Audit,” Ava got fired. The school...

"You Got Saints and Sinners Everywhere": 'Abbott Elementary's Star Carefully Teases Highly-Anticipated 'Always Sunny in Philadelphia' Crossover
Image
Earlier this year, worlds collided when the stars of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia dropped into Willard R. Abbott Elementary School. This summer, it'll be Abbott Elementary's turn to invade Paddy's Pub. Abbott's William Stanford Davis recently spoke to Collider's Joe Schmidt about the upcoming crossover's conclusion. Davis teased the upcoming second half of the crossover, which will be harder-edged thanks to the R-rated nature of Always Sunny:

"You've already seen the Abbott [Elementary] portion of it, [but not] the Always Sunny portion. But you know, you got saints and sinners everywhere. And Abbott is the saint part of it, because I can't tell you what these guys are going to be doing, but it's pretty crazy, and I'd get in trouble. I was told specifically, do not talk about that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia part of the crossover."

He was able to share his fond memories of working...
