10 Best Horror Movies of All Time, According to Roger Ebert
Image
Roger Ebert was a film critic with the unique power to convey his passion for film to the masses. His enthusiasm was not blind, however, and he held the oft-maligned horror genre to an especially high standard. This list of the ten best films from Ebert's "Greatest Movies" collection illustrates his understanding of what makes a horror film a masterpiece.

Ebert believed that a horror film should "exorcise" something for the viewer — to help the audience process dark and traumatic feelings. Beginning with the German Expressionist revolution and reaching into the gory excesses of the 1970s and '80s, this wide-ranging list of films showcases the genre at its best. The critic's clear-eyed commentary on each picture will show fans why horror cinema will never die.

German Expressionism Helped Legitimize the Horror Genre The Cabinet of Dr. Caligary (1920), dir. Robert Wiene

Roger Ebert agreed with the common assertion that The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari...

10 Movies to Watch if you Liked Nosferatu
Image
One of the final movies of 2024 to come out is the much-anticipated remake of the silent film Nosferatu. Robert Eggers undertook the monumental task of remaking the 102-year-old classic movie. Eggers is also famous for making The Northman and The Lighthouse and has now gifted 2024 with one of the finest horror films in recent years.

Unlike most horror movies, Nosferatu is more subtle and relies more on more traditional filmmaking techniques as opposed to gore, jump scares, and cheesy acting. There are a good amount of horror films that have similar philosophies in their aesthetics, and tempo or are just willing to go against the tropes of the genre.

How ‘Nosferatu’ Became a Feminist Retelling of a Horror Classic
Image
Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Nosferatu (2024).

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is arguably the most important and well-known horror text in modern history. Originally published in 1897, this epistolary novel follows a young solicitor and his wife as they’re attacked by an ancient vampire attempting to move from his isolated castle to the bustling UK. Stoker’s gothic story was itself adapted from centuries of folklore describing a night-dwelling beast who seduces then sucks the blood of innocent victims. Twenty-five years after publication, F.W. Murnau brought Stoker’s novel to the screen in the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. Set in 1838, this loose and unauthorized retelling chronicles a similar vampiric plague in the fictional town of Wisborg, Germany. More than a century later, Robert Eggers tackles these two classic texts while adding his particular brand of feminist mysticism. Rather than a helpless victim corrupted by darkness, his...

Interview: Robert Eggers Talks Nosferatu
Robert Eggers
You’ve likely heard the hype. This Christmas, Robert Eggers brings us his fourth feature film, as he offers the legend of Nosferatu to the big screen. Eggers remake or reboot, whatever you’d like to call it, is an exceptional film. The performances from Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe are terrific. Yet it is both Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard that bring a bloody heart and soul to this darkly beautiful and haunting feature. It’s rare to see such care taken to create a villain with tons more depth than your generic movie monster. Eggers examines this by incorporating elements of both the original Nosferatu and the legacy of Dracula.

Recently, we sat down to interview Mr. Eggers about his latest feature. The filmmaker discussed the influences that went into this dark new nightmare. He talked about merging the elements of Dracula, among others,...

What Does Nosferatu Mean? A Guide To All Of Your Pressing Questions
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" resurrects a 102-year-old vampire who first appeared in F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent black-and-white film "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror." /Film's own review of Nouveau-"Nosferatu" raves about it as a truly terrifying horror picture, as scary to modern audiences as Murnau's was a century prior.

It's incredible that cinema is now old enough that certain classic films have endured for a century or more. Heck, the 100th birthday of "The Wizard of Oz" is only 15 years away. However, "Nosferatu" is technically older than he appears — because the character is, in all but name, Count Dracula.

Now, the vampire himself is not named Dracula in Murnau's film but rather Count Orlok (played by Max Shreck). The story follows the major beats of Bram Stoker's novel, though, aside from moving the setting from England to Germany. Thomas Hutter...

10 Underrated Vampire Movies That Deserve Much More Love
Image
This article mentions suicide.

Vampire films are one of the oldest genres of horror movies to grace the silver screen, and it's no surprise why. A good vampire flick can be addictive and fantastical, leaving the audience wanting more from the mystical underworld in the story. Over time, vampire films grew in versatility, from the seriousness of Francis Ford Coppola's Gothic hit, Bram Stoker's Dracula, to the angsty vampire romance of the Twilight series.

As pop culture's obsession with vampires grows with Hollywood, many underrated vampire films can fly under the radar. Though less popular than some of the bigger vampire classics and series, many of these hidden gems bring something fresh and unique to Hollywood's fascination with these monsters. For example, films like Queen of the Damned expand upon the mythology of Interview with the Vampire, and Nosferatu introduces audiences to the Dracula-alternative, German depiction of vampires.

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror trailer: Doug Jones is Count Orlok in a remix of the silent classic
The Witch (2015)
Back in 2015, it was announced that The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers (who was, at that time, had only made The Witch) was planning to remake F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). It took Eggers several years to get to Nosferatu, though, and we’ll finally have the chance to see his take on the concept when his movie reaches theatres on Wednesday, December 25th. About eight and half months after Eggers’ Nosferatu was first announced, we heard that filming had begun on a separate Nosferatu remake. Or, as the director referred to it, a remix. That was David Lee Fisher’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror… and that movie has now made its way out into the world! Fisher’s movie is available for purchase on Prime Video, going for the price of $4.99. It will also be released through Apple TV tomorrow,...

How The Nosferatu 2024 Cast Compares To The Original 1922 Movie
Image
The first trailer for Robert Eggers' remake of Nosferatu is out now, and here's how the cast of the 2024 Nosferatu compares to the original 1922 movie. 1922's Nosferatu is considered to be one of the earliest and best horror films of all time, with it adapting the story of Dracula to the big screen. The legacy of Nosferatu has lived on for over 100 years now, and while there have been other remakes, Robert Eggers is in line to direct the next one. Robert Eggers' Nosferatu features an all-new cast playing these classic characters, and here's who they are.

F.W. Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu was a historic film, with it defining the German Expressionist movement and establishing many of the common tropes seen in film vampires. Despite wanting to adapt the story of Dracula, Murnau didn't have the rights, leading to him making changes to names and characters in an attempt to safely make Nosferatu.

Silent Films Accompany Great Rock Albums in New Theatrical Project
Image
Silents Synced combines silent movies with rock albums, aiming to attract new audiences to cinemas. Blue Starlite Entertainment and CineLife Entertainment collaborate on events like "Radiohead: Nosferatu" and "Sherlock, Jr./R.E.M." Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake, featuring Bill Skarsgrd and an ensemble cast, will release on December 25, 2024.

If there's one thing that classic Hollywood silent movies are desperately missing, it's the screeching noise of electric guitars. Music has long accompanied the dialogue-less moving pictures of iconic silent movies, but not like this. Silents Synced is a new series from Blue Starlite Entertainment and CineLife Entertainment, which screens silent movies accompanied by iconic rock albums. Per a report from Deadline, the first show will blend F.W. Murnau's seminal Nosferatu (1922) with two Radiohead albums that are traditionally paired (Kid A & Amnesiac). Following this, the companies are also developing a pairing of Buster Keaton's Sherlock, Jr. with music from R.E.M....

Nosferatu remake star Bill Skarsgard says playing the title character was like conjuring pure evil
Image
Several months ago, we got our first look at the “crazy vampire hunter” character Willem Dafoe plays in The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) – but we still haven’t gotten a good look at the title character, who is brought to life this time around by Bill Skarsgard (It). It would probably be for the best if we don’t see Skarsgard’s Count Orlok until the film reaches theatres on Wednesday, December 25th – but during a new interview with Esquire, the actor did discuss the process of playing the character, which he said was like conjuring pure evil.

During his conversation with Esquire, Skarsgard revealed that, during the Nosferatu production, he had to spend three to six hours every day getting the makeup and prosthetics put on so he could become Count Orlok.

Nosferatu remake is unlike anything Willem Dafoe has seen before
Willem Dafoe
A couple days ago, we got our first look at the “crazy vampire hunter” character Willem Dafoe plays in The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). So we know what he looks like in the film… but we may not be prepared for what the overall film looks like. Nosferatu remake image shows Willem Dafoe as crazy vampire hunter Von Franz
Image
Twenty-three years ago, Willem Dafoe played actor Max Schreck in the film Shadow of the Vampire, which gave a behind-the-scenes look at the making of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) to reveal that Schreck really was a vampire. Now Dafoe has a role in The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of Nosferatu – but he’s not playing the title role. Instead, he’s playing a “crazy vampire hunter” named Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, and Entertainment Weekly has just unveiled an interesting image that shows Dafoe in character! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains.

Nosferatu: Robert Eggers talks about Bill Skarsgård’s complete transformation and a new image is released
Image
Robert Eggers takes his tendency to stay faithful to a laboriously era-accurate vision to the story of Count Orlok in a remake of Nosferatu. The director of such films as The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman speaks with Total Film Magazine about Bill Skarsgård’s unrecognizable look for his adaptation. According to ComingSoon, Eggers says Skarsgård’s performance will be unlike anything he’s ever done before. Seeing as how he’s already shown his creepy demeanor in the It films and Barbarian, it will be interesting to see how different his interpretation will be to Max Schreck from the original 100-year-old film.

Eggers explained, “There are things that are Schreck-like but I felt we had to do something else. Basically I was like, ‘What would a dead Transylvanian nobleman actually look like for real?’ Bill lost a tremendous amount of weight.” He added, “He’s so transformed in...

The movie is still a year away. Focus Features has announced that they’ll be giving Nosferatu a theatrical release on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, “making it a prime holiday season release.”

Image
Nicholas Hoult's first look in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu reimagining revealed in Empire Magazine. Bill Skarsgård's Count Orlok is teased in an out-of-focus reveal in the image. Eggers describes the film as a scary, Gothic horror movie, aiming to deliver old-school scares.

A first look image of Nicholas Hoult in Robert Eggers' anticipated Nosferatu reimagining has been unveiled in the print edition of Empire Magazine. A closer examination of the picture also reveals an out-of-focus reveal of another of the film's focal characters: Bill Skarsgård's Count Orlok. Nosferatu remake: Robert Eggers says film pushed him beyond his capabilities
Image
Eight years have passed since we first heard that The Witch writer/director Robert Eggers was going to be taking the helm of a remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here), but filming didn’t begin until earlier this year. During a recent interview with Empire magazine, Eggers said that it was a good thing that he wasn’t able to make Nosferatu earlier, because even after making The Lighthouse and The Northman, this movie still pushed him “beyond his capabilities”. Which is exactly what he was going for.

Eggers said, “I’m trying to go beyond what I’m capable of. As always, it was a difficult shoot. Last night we were doing a scene on a ship with a lot of rain and waves, and the rain deflector, which tries to blow rain out of the lens, was breaking down and fogging. I spent...

Nosferatu: Nicholas Hoult says Robert Eggers remake will be really special
Image
Nicholas Hoult can be seen on the big screen in this weekend’s Dracula horror comedy Renfield (read our review Here), where he plays the title character – and since making that film, he has also been hard at work on another vampire movie: writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). Speaking with Total Film, Hoult said he was convinced to take a role in Eggers’ Nosferatu because he believes the film will be “really special”.

Hoult told Total Film, “Rob has wanted to make Nosferatu since he was eight years old and he did a play of it as well when he was in high school, so it’s been a passion project of his for a long time. Honestly, I wasn’t looking to go back into the vampire world again, but his style and tone are just so completely the...

The Fly-Eating Henchman: A Brief History of the ‘Renfield’ Character on the Big Screen
Image
With the exception of the Count himself, Renfield is the most dynamic character in the Dracula story. Originally conceived as a madman in Dr. Seward’s sanitarium with a mysterious connection to his vampire overlord, Renfield has evolved with the ever-extending mythos that has arisen around Stoker’s original creation.

Since the earliest Dracula films, the character has changed and deepened, become more and less integral to the story depending on the focus of the filmmakers, but has always been an opportunity for great character actors to let loose and give some of the most memorable performances in horror cinema.

This week, Renfield will finally get his moment at center stage, with Nicholas Hoult becoming the latest actor to bite into the role. In anticipation of his starring turn, here is a look at some of the very best depictions of everyone’s favorite fly-eating maniac.

Nosferatu: Robert Eggers remake gets a website, Ralph Ineson and Simon McBurney are in the cast
Image
Eight years after the project was first announced, writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) is finally in production, with filming taking place in Prague. With the start of production comes the launching of a website, which you can check out at This Link – and which is currently quite low on content. But the website does include some information we haven’t covered here before: Eggers’ The Witch star Ralph Ineson and Simon McBurney are both in the cast!

McBurney has over 60 screen acting credits to his name, stretching back to the 1980s. In recent years he had roles in Carnival Row, The Pale Blue Eye, The Conjuring 2, and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (pictured below).

Ineson and McBurney join a cast that includes the previously announced Lily-Rose Depp (Yoga Hosers), Nicholas Hoult (The Menu), Emma Corrin (The Crown), Aaron Taylor-Johnson...
