Since the pandemic, Puerto Rico's indie music scene has exploded. It's as if the island births new talent by the hour - and it can seem almost impossible to keep up. One of the artists who emerged during this renaissance is Melissa Ocasio. The Boricua artist has been making a name for herself as an alternative indie meets electro-Caribbean artist, ever since she released her first official single "Agárrate," a call-to-action song about the femicides happening in Puerto Rico.

There's a scene in French choreographer-turned-director Benjamin Millepied's adaptation of Georges Bizet's 1875 opera "Carmen" (out now in theaters) in which Masilda (played by Spanish actress Rossy de Palma) tells Carmen (played by Mexican actress Melissa Barrera), "Dance. Dancing will heal."

In the 10-minute scene that takes place halfway through the film, there's dialogue, there's tears, there's shared laughs, there's joy, and there's, of course, dancing. If there's one scene in the film that really embodies both Millepied's genius in creating an entirely new genre out of this classic adaptation as well as Barrera's ability to transform herself into any role, it's this one. It plays out like visual poetry (carried by Nicholas Britell's brilliant score and songs by Mexican iconic singer Julieta Venegas), making it distinct from your typical musical or dance feature. Barrera flows between ballet, flamenco, and interpretative dance so seamlessly, she hardly needs dialogue...

Hot off his Oscar nomination for “Aftersun” — and his renewed commitment to keep starring in independent films — Paul Mescal will be returning to arthouses this spring in “Carmen,” a new opera-inspired film directed by “Black Swan” choreographer Benjamin Millepied.

Millepied’s film stars Mescal and Melissa Barrera as an undocumented immigrant and a border patrol guard who fall in love despite the fact that they’re supposed to be foes and go on the run together. The film features an original score by Nicholas Britell, and original songs by Britell and other musicians including the Doc, Julieta Venegas, and Taura Stinson.

Bad Bunny just won big at the 2022 Latin Grammys. The Puerto Rican singer, who led the pack with 10 nominations, took home five trophies at Thursday night’s show in Las Vegas.

Bad Bunny’s album, Un Verano Sin Ti, not only blew up the charts in 2022, it proved to be a big hit at the Latin Grammys as well, with the singer winning the award for Urban Music Album of the Year for the LP.

He also scored four more trophies in a variety of categories, including Urban Fusion/Performance for “Tití Me Preguntó”, Best Urban Song for “Tití Me Preguntò”, Best Rap/Hip-Hop song for “De Museo” and Best Reggaeton Performance for “Lo Siento Bb:/” with Tainy and Julieta Venegas.

Tu Historia, the eighth album from venerable Mexican singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas, finds her sounding at once reassuringly familiar and totally brand-new. Over the past 20 years, Venegas has seamlessly transitioned from Latina alterna-rock firebrand to pop songstress and rock en español icon, as evidenced by her show-closing profile on Netflix’s Rompan Todo documentary about the history of Latin American rock music.

While Venegas has had her share of massive and influential hits, such as 2003’s “Algo Está Cambiando” and “Lento” (which recently had a revival via TikTok), and 2006’s breakup anthem “Me Voy,...

Benjamin Millepied, who choreographed and co-starred in 2010 Oscar nominee “Black Swan,” had been wanting to bring his take on the classic opera “Carmen” to the big screen for more than six years. The score would be one of the most important components for Millepied, who was directing a feature film solo for the first time, and he turned to composer Nicholas Britell to help execute his vision. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that their collaboration made choirs sing.

Georges Bizet’s opera, which bowed in Paris in 1875, was set in southern Spain. Millepied’s movie, is a complete re-imagining, debuting Sept. 11 at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival released by Sony Pictures Classics, begins in Mexico with a jaw-dropping flamenco number that showcases Marina Tamayo as Carmen’s mother on the grounds of the family’s house. BTS woke up the crowd at Sunday’s American Music Awards with a performance full of so much jumping, it would make Tigger exhausted just watching it.

The world’s biggest K-pop group joined Coldplay to perform “My Universe,” a multilingual song off the band’s new album Music of the Spheres. But BTS was also supposed to team up with Megan Thee Stallion for a performance of the “Butter” remix; she announced on Saturday that she would no longer be performing.

Some of the industry’s biggest names are descending upon Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater for the 2021 American Music Awards. But first, it’s carpet time.

For BTS fans, if not Coldplay fans, it might have seemed like an eternity — even though it’s only been two months — wondering if there would be a live performance of the two groups’ collaborative “My Universe” single. It’s coming now, with both acts confirmed for a joint appearance on Sunday’s American Music Awards telecast.

BTS will be doing double duty on the ABC show, as the group was already announced as hooking up with Megan Thee Stallion for another performance spot, doing the first live TV rendition of their “Butter Remix” collaboration.

The announcement of their booking follows by a day a rollout of some other performances slated for the broadcast, including the rising Italian rock band Måneskin, “Fancy Like” singer Walker Hayes, country favorite Mickey Guyton and hip-hop artist Tyler, the Creator.

The performance lineup for the American Music Awards, airing Nov. 21 on ABC (and streaming the next day on Hulu), continues to take shape as the network announced additional performers. Taking the stage Sunday night will be Italian rock band Måneskin, “Fancy Like” singer Walker Hayes, country’s Mickey Guyton and hip-hop artist Tyler, the Creator (pictured); Diplo is set to DJ at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

They join previously announce performers Bad Bunny, Tainy and Julieta Venegas, BTS with Megan Thee Stallion (making the world television premiere of the “Butter” remix), Olivia Rodrigo, Carrie Underwood with Jason Aldean, Kane Brown, New Edition and New Kids on the Block.

Cardi B is set to host this year’s show, following on the heels of Taraji P. Henson performing the duties on a one-time basis last November and Ciara the year before that.

‘Normal People’ star Paul Mescal will play the male lead in Benjamin Millepied’s film “Carmen,” a modern-day reimagining of one of the world’s most celebrated operas. Mescal will star opposite Melissa Barrera (“Vida”), who will play the titular role of Carmen.

Mescal replaces “Fifty Shades” star Jamie Dornan, who was previously attached to the role.

“Carmen” will mark the feature debut of Millepied, a former principal dancer from the New York City Ballet who choreographed Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan.”

The adaptation was penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris Jr (“Birdman”), together with Millepied and Loic Barrère.

Dimitri Rassam is financing and producing via his banner Chapter 2, a Mediawan company, together with Rosemary Blight at Goalpost Pictures, one of Australia’s most dynamic independent film companies. TF1 Studio is co-producing and handling worldwide sales.

The movie will start shooting on Jan. 18 in Australia for seven weeks. Goalpost Pictures will handle the production locally.
