Athens-based boutique film outfit Heretic has two titles in the Cannes Acid (Association for the International Distribution of Independent Cinemas) sidebar.

Heretic’s own Greek production, co-produced with North Macedonia’s List Production, “Kyuka Before Summer’s End,” by debut director Kostas Charamountanis, is the opening film of the Acid program. The film follows a family of three, a single father, Babis, and his twin children on the verge of adulthood, Konstantinos and Elsa, who sail to the island of Poros on the family boat for their holidays. In the midst of swimming, sunbathing and making new friends, Konstantinos and Elsa meet, unbeknownst to them, their birth mother Anna who abandoned them when they were babies. The encounter stirs up long-held feelings of resentment in Babis, resulting in a bittersweet coming-of-age journey.

Buenos Aires — Esteemed Argentine film producers gathered to relay their experiences with fiction remakes as part of Ventana Sur’s industry conference series held at the Uca campus in Buenos Aires on Monday.

The panelists included Juan Vera and Marcos Carnevale, directors who sold the rights to their films “Mama Se Fue De Viaje,” and “Elsa y Fred,” respectively, as well as Sebastián Aloi, who produced “Re Loca,” the remake of Chilean film “Sin Filtro.” Navigating the discussion was David Castellanos, managing director of Madrid-based Cinema Republic, who encouraged the group to detail the finesse needed to rework a script for new markets.

Vera, who also serves as artistic director for Argentine production company Patagonik, relayed that “The films that are easiest to remake are those that have universal themes.”

The film has to date been sold to more than 45 countries by sales outfit and remake rights specialist FilmSharks. A Chinese theatrical deal is said to be in advanced discussions. Panama City — Argentine actor Ricardo Darin (“Truman”) graced the red carpet at Panama City’s Teatro Balboa on Thursday night, in the company of leading international producers, directors and actors for the opening ceremony of the 8th Panama International Film Festival.

The 1,145 seater Teatro Balboa was packed for the occasion and as Darin took the stage he was greeted with enthusiastic applause and cries of admiration, to which he grinned, waved and replied in English: “I love you too.”

Fest director Pituka Ortega Heilbron thanked the national authorities, private institutions and local audiences for their support for Panamanian cinema and for the festival, which she said has now become an institution of national heritage.

Iff Panama Foundation’s president, Yasser Williams underlined the economic impact of cinema in Panama, citing data from the Inter-American Development Bank which suggests that for every $1 invested in cinema in Panama an additional $1.5 in revenues is generated.

Festival runs from April 4-10.

Exclusive: After its Efm screening, Argentinian sales outfit FilmSharks has sold rom-com An Unexpected Love (El Amor Menos Pensado), starring Ricardo Darin (The Secret In Their Eyes) and Mercedes Moran (La Cienaga), to HBO Latino for U.S. first run pay TV and Svod.

The deal was struck by HBO’s Leslie Cohen VP, Film Programming, and Rebecca C. Vazquez, Vice President, Business Affairs, and Guido Rud of FilmSharks.

Writer-director Juan Vera’s film sees a couple questioning their marriage of 25 years after their only son flies the nest to study abroad. With Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy at the helm who, at 43, is its youngest president, the oldest fest in the Arab and African worlds is undergoing a radical revamp in a major effort to get its mojo back after a decade of decline due to the country’s post-revolution turbulence.

Hefzy, who is known internationally for the steady stream of edgy top notch titles birthed by his Film Clinic shingle — most recently Cannes standout “Yomeddine,” which is Egypt’s current candidate for the foreign-language Oscar — is the first Cairo fest chief chosen from within the country’s film industry ranks. Bernardo Zupnik, one of the Argentine film industry’s most senior figures, has been voted in as the president of Argentina’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Cecilia Roth, famed for her performances in early Pedro Almodovar films, will serve as vice-president, and producer-turned-director Juan Vera, who has just debuted behind the camera with Ricardo Darín starrer “An Unexpected Love,” is the Academy’s new second vice-president.

Could the tide be turning? Following Cannes, Locarno, Sarajevo and Venice, of European events, San Sebastian will sign a gender-parity charter at this year’s event. More eye-catching, San Sebastian joins a growing bevy of events — Venice Days and Mexico’s Morelia, for example — in having at least one major section with more titles directed by women than men. In San Sebastian’s case, it is the 2018 Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum. That makes sense: Screening finished films, festivals depend on women’s movies getting made, and highlighting projects can further that goal. “We support ways for more women’s films to get made,” says San Sebastian director José Luis Rebordinos.

Actor, director and producer Danny DeVito will receive the Donostia award at the 66th San Sebastian Film Festival (September 21-29).

DeVito will receive his award on Saturday September 22 in the Kursaal. The following day he will present a screening of 2018 animation Smallfoot, of which he is part of a voice cast that includes Channing Tatum, James Corden and Zendaya.

The film, which will vie for the Golden Shell in competition at the 66th edition of the festival, marks the directorial debut of Juan Vera, who has previously co-produced films including Zama and Carancho.

Panellists on December 4 spoke of the need to scrutinise every possible creative ownership stake when preparing a remake.

“You need good lawyers to assess the fundamental rights chain,” said Alejandro Cacetta of Patagonik Film Group, speaking during a sesion moderated by FilmSharks chief Guido Rud.

Robert Darwell of Us law firm Sheppard Mullin spoke about the time he did legal work on Adrian Lyne’s 1997 Lolita starring Jeremy Irons.

In that case, Darwell said, the legal team and producers had secured the rights to Vladimir Nabokov’s novel but not to Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 film and had to pay attention that no element of the earier adaption seeped into their fresh interpretation.

“Remakes for a long time have been an important part of the development process at the studios,” said Darwell.

The plot of the movie revolves around two successful friendly couples: Diego (Adrian Suar) and Emilia (Julieta Diaz), and Bettina (Carla Peterson) and Richard (Juan Minujin). When the fun of double dating begins to grow old, Richard and Bettina share a dirty little secret with their friends Diego and Emilia. They live a double life as swingers and would love to share this practice with them. In this hilarious erotic comedy two couples explore their sexual boundaries while juggling their everyday lives with kids and soccer practice.

Directed by Diego Kaplan, written by Daniel Cuparo and Juan Vera, and presented in Spanish with English subtitles, the sexy-looking 2+2 (or Dos más dos) is premiering in the U.S. on DVD.

Strand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Pablo Trapero's "Carancho," which recently screened in A Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. The thriller, starring Ricardo Darin and Martina Gusman, will be released in early 2011.

The film focuses on an ambulance-chasing lawyer and an ER doctor who form an unlikely and symbiotic relationship that leads them into a dark world of corruption and murder.

Strand distributed Trapero’s previous film "Lion’s Den."

With a screenplay by Alejandro Fadel, Martin Mauregui, Santiago Mitre and Trapero, "Carancho" is a Matanza Cine production in association with Finecut, Patagonik, Ad Vitam and L90 Producciones. It was produced by Trapero with Martina Gusman serving as executive producer. Youngjoo Suh, Juan Pablo Galli, Alejandro Cacetta, Juan Vera, Alexandra Henochsberg, Gregory Gajos, Arthur Hallereau, Felipe Braun serve as co-producers.

The deal was negotiated between Fine Cut's Suh and Strand's Jon Gerrans.
