Film Review: Kailan Ka Magiging Akin (1991) by Chito S. Rono

On March 27, 2025, Abs-cbn‘s Film Archives and Restoration and Ayala Malls launched A Rewind, their retrospective feature partnership which aims to make “timeless films accessible to the wider audience” according to their press release. This is a great opportunity to launch retrospective screens in commercial movie theaters because the practice is quite rare in the Philippines. They chose to begin with a film titled “Kailan Ka Magiging Akin.”

Released in 1991 by Vision Films, a company that was subsequently absorbed by the film giant, Star Cinema, “Kailan Ka Magiging Akin” adapts for the screen a popular serial radio drama. The title refers to a drama between characters whose motivations center on one child. Dolor (Janice de Belen) is hired by Jaime (Eddie Gutierrez) to temporarily take care of the child adopted by his cousin, Adul (Vivian Velez). On the side of this set up are two women with extreme attitudes toward...

The Philippines Picks ‘Mindanao’ for Oscars Foreign Film Category
Image
The Philippines has selected the Brillante Mendoza-directed war drama “Mindanao” as its national contender for the Academy Awards best international feature category.

The selection was made by the Film Academy of The Philippines and announced on Tuesday by the Academy’s director general Vivian Velez.

The film tells the twin stories of a Muslim woman who remains at home caring for her cancer-ridden daughter in a temporary shelter and that of her husband who is a combat medical officer near the front lines of a battle in Maguindanao.

“Mindanao” premiered in October last year at the 2019 Busan International Film Festival and subsequently played at the Cairo and Kolkata festivals. It made a bigger splash at the Metro Manila Film Festival, The Philippines’ annual celebration of local movies. There it won 11 prizes, including best film and best actress for female lead Judy Ann Santos, and was nominated in a further six categories.
