It's a brand new week, and that means there are some exciting new shows to watch out for on Netflix and other streaming services. For a lot of people, this week begins the start of the new school year. Back to routine and back to busy schedules, leaving less time for binge-watching and keeping up with the constant flow of television shows angling for our watch lists.
Thankfully, this week offers a bit of a lighter slate of new offerings with only four major debuts and returns coming down the pipeline. However, there are also lots of new episodes of streaming shows coming throughout the week. Prime Video once again drops new episodes Countdown and The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 while Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues on Paramount+.
Beyond those series, there are plenty of other exciting shows still releasing new episodes before their seasons come to an end.

Netflix’s newest drama might not be the perfect watch for a family night in. Adapted from May Cobb’s bestselling novel, the series takes audiences into the intoxicating lives of the elite in Texas. The show follows a woman as she moves to Texas from Boston with her family and gets embroiled in seduction, obsession, and murder (via Netflix).
Boasting a cast of seasoned stars and high production value, the show is built for scandal, not Sunday-night family Netflix sessions. Netflix quietly retitled Tyler Perry’s political comedy from “She the People” to “Miss Governor” after a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by activist Aimee Allison, whose nonprofit bears the same name, accused the series of misappropriating her brand.
The new name appeared in a July 4 teaser for Season 1 Part 2, effectively removing the original title from all current marketing materials.
Court papers, lodged in California on May 19, list Perry, actor-producer Terri J. Vaughn, Perry’s Tyler Vision LLC and Netflix as defendants and request a jury trial, injunctive relief and damages.
Allison says she has used the “She the People” mark since 2018 for conferences, podcasts and a 2019 presidential forum; she notes that a 2024 trademark bid by Tyler Vision was rejected this April for likely confusion.
The complaint also recalls a 2020 collaboration in which Vaughn allegedly helped Allison develop a documentary of the same name, sharing interview subjects and pitch decks later echoed by the scripted series.

Tyler Perry Studios quietly renamed its political comedy “She the People” last week amid ongoing litigation accusing Tyler Perry and series star and executive producer Terri J. Vaughn of lifting the name of the Netflix comedy from the political nonprofit of the same name.
Vaughn, Tyler Vision LLC and Netflix were sued earlier this year by She the People founder Aimee Allison for trademark infringement and unfair competition. The activist claimed that the Mississippi capitol-set comedy series stole its name from her own trademarked work. Allison’s nonprofit was founded to empower and embolden women of color in a new political era; the Netflix series follows Vaughn as Antoinette Dunkerson, the Magnolia State’s first Black lieutenant governor.

Tyler Perry's new Netflix film Straw is enjoying a successful run on the streaming service, thanks to its heartwrenching story. However, while audiences seem willing to give the harrowing drama a chance, critics appear to be unsympathetic toward it.
Per Rotten Tomatoes, Straw has a "rotten" 46% critical rating on the popular review aggregator -- in line with the scores critics have been giving most of Perry's Netflix films. However, audiences disagree with the critical assessments, giving the Taraji P. Henson-led effort a 75% audience score... which makes Straw one of his highest-rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes.
The latest film released by Perry as a part of his extensive deal with Netflix, Straw sees Henson portray Janiyah Wilkinson, a down-on-her-luck single mother living in a run-down apartment with her ailing daughter, Aria. Fans were happy to learn that Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black was renewed for a second season back in March, and now they have even more to be excited about. The multi-talented filmmaker is bringing a brand-new series to Netflix this May, and this time, he’s switching gears with his first comedy for the streamer.
Titled She The People, this marks the second show that Perry is working on as part of his ongoing agreement with Netflix. Under this deal, Perry has committed to creating content for the platform, including writing, producing, and directing a variety of movies, TV series, and faith-based projects.
While Perry writes, directs, and produces this new comedy series, Niya Palmer is also a co-creator of the show. She executive produces alongside Keisha Lance Bottoms and Terri J. Vaughn. In addition, Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland produce for Tyler Perry Studios.
But Vaughn isn't just behind the scenes.

Even though we're all counting down the days until all of our favorite Netflix shows like Stranger Things, Wednesday (which now has a return date!), Emily in Paris, and more return with new seasons later this year, the streaming service isn't cutting corners with its new shows in the meantime. In May 2025, there are plenty of titles to keep our watch lists stocked with great content.
Beyond the exciting, high-profile releases coming in May, such as The Four Seasons, Sirens, and the latest binge-able drama from Tyler Perry, Netflix has even more great shows to offer. May also brings Big Mouth season 8, Thank You, Next season 2, The Royals, Secrets We Keep, and Love, Death & Robots. There's definitely no shortage in shows to watch on Netflix in the coming month.
But which of the best new Netflix shows are worth watching in May and which are best left skipped, either altogther or for a rainy day?...
