Anime has become such a popular and evergreen storytelling medium because of its limitless opportunities and diverse genres. Shonen anime are some of the mediums most successful titles, many of which produce hundreds of episodes and run for the better part of the decade. Akira Toriyamas Dragon Ball remains an archetypal shonen triumph that modern anime continues to chase. Dragon Balls accomplishments are plentiful, and the original anime premiered on February 26, 1986, on Fuji TV, where it ran for 153 episodes, at which point Dragon Ball Z started to air on April 26, 1989.
Dragon Ball helped establish many shonen staples, yet itd be disingenuous to the demographic and genre to overlook the many anime that preceded it. Dragon Ball blazed trails for shonen anime during the 90s and 2000s, but there are still some incredible shonen titles from the 70s, 80s, and even earlier that still hold up and are as impressive and entertaining as Dragon Ball.

The manga industry is one that just keeps getting bigger with every year, and there are naturally some manga that end up becoming best-sellers. While anime tends to be the field that gets the most attention, manga is just as big of an industry, if not bigger. Naturally, many of the most popular anime wouldnt exist if they didnt have a manga to be adapted from, and that creates a symbiotic relationship where the success of a manga helps make its anime more successful which, in turn, helps make the manga even more successful.
Many of the best-selling manga have the benefit of being around for decades and accumulating massive amounts of sales accordingly, but in some cases, a relatively new manga was able to resonate with people so well that it would sell an unbelievable amount in a short amount of time. Whatever the case, its not unheard of...
