There have been countless TV adaptations of popular books, and even if we count this year (which isn’t over), there have been over seven or eight. While there have been many brilliant books that were adapted through the years, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the TV shows are also good, and that’s why we decided to compile a list of the absolute best TV shows that were based on books. As a side note, we also decided not to include Game of Thrones and Dexter, mainly because of how they ended.

I am a sucker for a good horror Western. I only wish there were more to choose from. The past few years have produced a couple of noteworthy offerings in that niche sub-genre. Stars from two of the biggest vampire franchises in the world have an upcoming project that just got a major release update. 72 Hours, the action-thriller starring Twilight veteran Cam Gigandet and True Blood star Sam Trammell, has officially been acquired by Brainstorm Media and is set for a November 1, 2024 theatrical and on-demand release. This model was popularized during the Covid-19 pandemic, when people enjoyed the option to either watch new movies at the theater or from the comfort of their own home. 72 hours will follow two brothers one an FBI agent and one an international money launderer who must put aside their differences and come together to save their family by saving them from the clutches of a dangerous drug kingpin.

Brainstorm Media has picked up the action-thriller 72 Hours, directed by Christian Sesma and starring Sam Trammell and Twilight actor Cam Gigandet.

A Nov. 1 theatrical and on-demand release is planned for 72 Hours, which centers on two brothers — a dedicated FBI agent and a crypto international money launderer — putting aside their differences and joining forces to save their family.

But a dangerous mission deep into kingpin territory has them facing life-threatening challenges in a race against time. The ensemble cast includes Nicky Whelan and Jana Kramer (One Tree Hill).

“We are so thrilled to be working on 72 Hours with the Toric Films and Grandave teams. Christian is a director we’ve long been a fan of, and this movie has a lot to be excited about: kinetic action, an excellent cast, and a unique take on a classic premise that audiences will love,” Michelle Shwarzstein, Brainstorm Media CEO, said in a statement.

"What's funny about True Blood was, you know, we were all really, really overqualified," he said. There's a long history of the horror and western genres co-existing. Both explore the humanity of characters set against an isolated and often violent experience -- and fusions of the genre can be especially impressive, like The Revenant and Bone Tomahawk. That's very much the intention of Organ Trail, which takes a typical western narrative and tries to infuse it with additional scary elements and the qualities of a thriller. While Director Michael Patrick Jann and Writer Meg Turner deliver a solid (if predictable) western, the film never quite figures out how to properly blend in the horror elements.

Review: Studios and production companies will often try to get around marketing their horror releases as straightforward horror movies. This is how we get the term “elevated horror”. It’s a marketer’s way of trying to get across the idea that the horror movie they’re promoting isn’t your average horror movie. This is something special, a movie to be held up above that other trash called horror. Given this aversion to accepting the horror label, it’s surprising to see that Paramount has chosen to market director Michael Patrick Jann’s cleverly titled Organ Trail as a “Horror Western”… because by doing so, they have slapped the horror brand on a movie that I wouldn’t have considered to be a horror movie otherwise.

It's a story we see all the time. A quiet and quaint lakeside town. A family from that town maintaining appearances in public but breaking down in private. A series of vicious crimes that even the town's seasoned detectives have a hard time wrapping their heads around. Ultimately, a darkness emerges from the picture-perfect facade and swallows it whole.

So it goes in Adam Randall's 2019 film "I See You." It is something of a mystery movie, a thriller that draws anxiety and suspense from the question of what is lurking beneath the surface of what you're seeing. Even though the small town with hidden crimes setup is familiar, the story goes in wild directions that keep the viewer from ever feeling truly grounded.

Kids raised in the '80s and '90s remember The Oregon Trail as an educational tool used to teach students about the titular route of pioneers and the general American migration to the West via wagon train in the mid-1800s. In 2010, a video game titled Organ Trail was released on the web that parodies The Oregon Trail but with a modern setting and zombies added in as the main threat. "I See You" defies expectations. What begins as a typical crime thriller mutates into something more intricate and profound. Devon Graye penned the script, blending together social commentary on child abuse, infidelity, police corruption, and homelessness. At the heart of the film is the concept of phrogging -- when a person or persons secretly squat inside someone else's home. The trailer for Organ Trail reveals a horror movie based on the popular 90s computer game. The Oregon Trail is an educational game that was created to teach grade school students about the realities of the wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon during the 1800s. The educational computer game was later parodied by Organ Trail, which reimagined it as a zombie survival game, and is now making an unexpected leap to the big screen.

Set in Montana during 1870, the trailer follows a young girl named Abigale and her family traveling across the Oregon Trail. After her family falls victim to a band of bloodthirsty bandits and Abigale is the sole survivor of the attack, she must do whatever it takes to reclaim her family's only possession, a horse, from the clutches of the ruthless gang.

Horror-western Organ Trail is on the way from director Michael Patrick Jann (Drop Dead Gorgeous, “Reno 911!”, “Daybreak”), and in fact it’s releasing this Friday.

Bloody Disgusting has learned that Paramount will release the Organ Trail movie in select theatres April 14. It’ll then be available to buy on Digital May 12, 2023.

As you may recall, it was announced back in 2020 that HBO was developing a series reboot of their hit vampire series “True Blood,” with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa leading the charge. Based on the novels by Charlaine Harris and created by Alan Ball, HBO’s vampire/werewolf/were-panther/you-name-it series aired between 2008 and 2014, officially coming to an end after seven seasons and 80 episodes.

But what’s the latest on HBO’s “True Blood” reboot? Well, according to a new article from Variety this week, those plans from back in 2020 are dead-in-the-water here in 2023.

HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys tells Variety that while a few scripts had been written for a potential “True Blood” reboot, nothing ended up coming together. It seems the project was only ever in the early stages, and HBO wasn’t confident enough to proceed. That doesn’t mean “True Blood” will Never be back, but...

True Blood is not returning on HBO.

Despite a new series set in the Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer series universe, the premium cabler has put a stake in those plans.

Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and HBO Max, revealed as much in a new interview with Variety.

Bloys said that despite a few scripts, "nothing felt like it got there," and the series is no longer in the works.

Returning to the universe would be a tough sell because the 2014 series finale didn't exactly go out on the best of terms.

It was a near-unanimously terrible final episode that disregarded the components of the series that made it successful for seven seasons.

Based on Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, the original series focused on telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire.

HBO is no longer eyeing a return trip to Bon Temps.

Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and HBO Max, confirms to our sister pub Variety that a reboot of True Blood — which had been in development at the premium cabler — is dead because “nothing… felt like it got there.”
