There have been countless TV adaptations of popular books, and even if we count this year (which isn’t over), there have been over seven or eight. While there have been many brilliant books that were adapted through the years, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the TV shows are also good, and that’s why we decided to compile a list of the absolute best TV shows that were based on books. As a side note, we also decided not to include Game of Thrones and Dexter, mainly because of how they ended.

Image
Chicago Med Season 10 has been a blast from start to (almost) finish. A parent's desperation for the safety of their child is something all too relatable for many Chicago Med fans. With that in mind,...

This “blood-soaked Western with first-rate characters” Is Streaming Now on Paramount+
Image
I am a sucker for a good horror Western. I only wish there were more to choose from. The past few years have produced a couple of noteworthy offerings in that niche sub-genre. Place of Bones is a decent effort that gets more wrong than right. However, the real standout from the last five years is Organ Trail, a 2023 release that hits all the right notes. If that sounds like your cup of tea, you can catch this visceral effort streaming on Paramount+ as of the publication of this post!

Why you need to see Organ Trail.

If you need a little more convincing, I’m prepared to put my money where my mouth is and break down what works about the flick. The headline for my Organ Trail review reads: “A Blood-Soaked Western with First-Rate Characters.” I think that sums it up well. The juxtaposition of nuanced characters...

10 Hit TV Shows That Went On Way Past Their Prime
Image
While actors, writers, and directors often want to continue indefinitely when they’ve got a hit TV show on their hands, it’s always disappointing for audiences when a show continues past its prime. It can be tempting to continually renew a show when there’s a willing audience eagerly excited about a new season, but this often leads to series that continue well past their prime and are artificially extended with convoluted plotlines and a rotating cast of main characters. There were even some shows that peaked early and should have ended with season one, yet continued needlessly for years on end.

Some hit TV shows had the potential to be among the best shows ever made, yet too many seasons meant they lost their appeal, and viewers slowly lost interest and stopped watching. Other examples had an excellent premise in their earliest seasons, but they decided to introduce...

Alexander Skarsgård resurrects his True Blood character for What We Do in the Shadows
Image
Ten years ago, one of HBO’s many hit shows that became a pop culture phenomenon had ended its run. True Blood was created by American Beauty writer Alan Ball and was based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries novels written by Charlaine Harris. The show dealt with vampires becoming ingrained in society with a new evolving fight for equal rights. The series starred Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Chris Bauer, Nelsan Ellis, Jim Parrack, Carrie Preston, Alexander Skarsgård, Todd Lowe, Deborah Ann Woll, Kristin Bauer van Straten, Lauren Bowles, and Joe Manganiello.

Deadline reports on the exciting development of Alexander Skarsgård reprising his role (unofficially) for an appearance in this final season of the FX comedy series What We Do in the Shadows. Skarsgård was not explicitly identified as Eric Northman, but his signature look was retained, although he took some liberties to change things...

Autumnal and Halloween entertainment doesn't have to be restricted to bone-chilling horror and gore. Sometimes the spooky season's TV binging sessions can be filled with supernatural romance shows that are equally thrilling and heartwarming. The smash hit book and film series Twilight helped popularize the supernatural romance genre and the idea of the vampire boyfriend, bringing it to the forefront in other properties.

The Laguna Beach party, hosted this year by Ted Danson, raised $1.5 million for campaigns to protect and restore the oceans in California and around the world. “We’ve been doing it for 17 years, and we’ve raised over $20 million just from that area alone,” Danson told THR.

“They are such a dedicated, supportive, generous audience down there, it’s one of our favorite events,” the actor said, adding that the organization is “usually able to get Hollywood to come down” for the fundraiser.

This year’s event, which honored longtime supporter and SeaChange co-founder Valarie Van Cleave, included an address from the organization’s new CEO Jim Simon. True Blood's Joe Manganiello Says Cast was Really Overqualified
Image
True Blood's success was due to its overqualified cast, including theater kids, Tony and Oscar winners, and international stars. Despite rumors of a reboot in 2021, HBO officially scrapped the idea in 2022 due to concerns about the script and direction. While the True Blood reboot is currently off the table, the show still has a devoted fanbase and may be considered for revival in the future.

True Blood was a huge hit for HBO, and is constantly the subject of revival talk among its many fans. According to star Joe Manganiello, one reason for the shows success was the quality of the cast, which he believes was vastly overqualified for the series.

True Blood became known for its gory, sexy take on the vampire genre from the moment it debuted in 2008. Based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novel series by Charlaine Harris, True Blood ran for a total of seven seasons,...

Joe Manganiello Says True Blood Cast Was 'Really, Really Overqualified'
Image
True Blood's Joe Manganiello believes the cast, due to its high caliber, was "really overqualified" to feature in the show. The actor played the werewolf Alcide Herveaux on the hit HBO vampire series.

Per Variety, Manganiello, in a recent episode of Podcrushed, reflected that although True Blood was an intelligent show that still had cultural resonance, the quality of actors it attracted was enviable given their talent, training, experience, and extensive rsums. "What's funny about True Blood was, you know, we were all really, really overqualified," he said. "Well, I should say the material was deceptively tricky because it was kind of written in like Tennessee Williams. It was very operatic at times."

10 TV Characters That Rewatches Haven't Been Kind To
Image
Rewatching beloved shows can reveal the unflattering behaviors and toxic traits of once-admired main characters. Cultural norms and evolving social standards can make certain dynamics and character traits cringe-worthy in retrospect. Protagonists that were initially crafted to be likable and relatable can turn into flawed and alienating characters upon a second viewing.

The main character of a TV show is crafted to be engaging and able to endear themselves to audiences, but the passage of time hasn't been kind to certain characters. As time passes and the show is revisited, certain aspects of the character are brought to light, making it evident that the character isn't who they initially appeared to be. Typically, a show’s protagonist serves as an empathetic anchor that viewers want to see succeed despite the flaws that humanize them. However, rewatching a series reveals unflattering behaviors and toxicity beneath the superficial charm of certain beloved main characters.

Khris Davis in Big George Foreman (2023)
‘Big George Foreman’.  Movie Review: Boxing Biopic
Khris Davis in Big George Foreman (2023)
Big George Foreman is a film directed by George Tillman Jr. starring Khris Davis.

Some movies simply wait for a great story to do all the work.

Foreman’s life was quite a story.

We can’t say the same for the film.

Movie Review

Some said the voiceover was anti-cinematic, and it was Scorsese (among others) who denied it film after film. This Big George Foreman wants to have a lot of Scorsese without achieving his pace, effectiveness and, above all, grace, and narrative freshness.

Big George Foreman is a film that resorts, at all times, to the obvious, to direct compassion, to that piece of American History a thousand times told in a thousand better ways and with more elaborate plots and less flat characters and, in the end, with more to say.

It is well executed technically, it knows how to behave, but the script’s compassionate...

Exclusive: Olivia Applegate and Jessica Frances Dukes on Their Wild Organ Trail Ride
Image
If 1883 crawled into a covered wagon with Little House on the Prairie, and combined the filmmaking DNA of Clint Eastwood and Quentin Tarantino, it might look something like Organ Trail. Contrary to what the title leads viewers to believe, it’s a not a total blood fest in this western thriller from first-time feature-length screenwriter Meg Turner. With director Michael Patrick Jann at the helm, the story is a sight to behold, and its female characters stand out.

Sometime after the American Civil War, the Archer family embarks on a new life out west. Abby (Riverdale's Zoé De Grand Maison), her Pa and Ma (Mather Zickel and Lisa LoCicero), and brother Travis (Lukas Jann), painstakingly move through the ordeal when a mysterious stranger, Cassidy (Olivia Applegate), helps them out. That proves to be deadly as it captures the attention of a treacherous gang, whose leader, Logan (Sam Trammell of True Blood...

Organ Trail Review: Great Villains Separate This Typical Revenge Western Movie
Image
With a resurgence of Westerns over the last decade, the horror genre has been one of the biggest benefactors, as genre-blending films like Prey (2022), Bone Tomahawk (2015), and The Pale Door (2020) were released to pretty significant audience and critical success. Joining the sub-genre is Organ Trail, a 2023 revenge-themed Western film directed by Michael Patrick Jann, and written by Meg Turner (Gnaw).

Organ Trail stars Olivia Grace Applegate (Love & Death), Zoé De Grand Maison, Clé Bennett (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Sam Trammell, and Nicholas Logan (I Care a Lot).

The story follows Abigail Archer (Maison), a young woman who, after witnessing her entire family getting slaughtered by a group of rowdy bandits, pulls off a death-defying escape, and with the help of a local rancher (Clé Bennett), decides to take the group head-on in hopes of recovering the one surviving member of her family, her horse.

Organ Trail Review
Image
There's a long history of the horror and western genres co-existing. Both explore the humanity of characters set against an isolated and often violent experience -- and fusions of the genre can be especially impressive, like The Revenant and Bone Tomahawk. That's very much the intention of Organ Trail, which takes a typical western narrative and tries to infuse it with additional scary elements and the qualities of a thriller. While Director Michael Patrick Jann and Writer Meg Turner deliver a solid (if predictable) western, the film never quite figures out how to properly blend in the horror elements.

In the years following the American Civil War, the Archer family ventures out across the countryside in search of a new life. Abby (Riverdale's Zoé De Grand Maison), alongside her Pa (Mather Zickel), Ma (Lisa LoCicero), and brother Travis (Lukas Jann), struggle to survive the journey. An act of kindness toward...

Organ Trail Review
Image
Plot: The surviving member of a family massacred by bandits tries to escape from the killers with her family’s horse.

Review: Studios and production companies will often try to get around marketing their horror releases as straightforward horror movies. This is how we get the term “elevated horror”. It’s a marketer’s way of trying to get across the idea that the horror movie they’re promoting isn’t your average horror movie. This is something special, a movie to be held up above that other trash called horror. Given this aversion to accepting the horror label, it’s surprising to see that Paramount has chosen to market director Michael Patrick Jann’s cleverly titled Organ Trail as a “Horror Western”… because by doing so, they have slapped the horror brand on a movie that I wouldn’t have considered to be a horror movie otherwise.

I See You Ending Explained: Small Town Secrets
Image
It's a story we see all the time. A quiet and quaint lakeside town. A family from that town maintaining appearances in public but breaking down in private. A series of vicious crimes that even the town's seasoned detectives have a hard time wrapping their heads around. Ultimately, a darkness emerges from the picture-perfect facade and swallows it whole.

So it goes in Adam Randall's 2019 film "I See You." It is something of a mystery movie, a thriller that draws anxiety and suspense from the question of what is lurking beneath the surface of what you're seeing. Even though the small town with hidden crimes setup is familiar, the story goes in wild directions that keep the viewer from ever feeling truly grounded.

What makes the movie different from that setup is the vast array of plot reversals; the way moments take on new meaning when viewed from a...

Organ Trail: Cast, Story Details, Trailer & Everything We Know
Image
Organ Trail is a 2023 horror movie that capitalizes on the nostalgia for the video game The Oregon Trail. Kids raised in the '80s and '90s remember The Oregon Trail as an educational tool used to teach students about the titular route of pioneers and the general American migration to the West via wagon train in the mid-1800s. In 2010, a video game titled Organ Trail was released on the web that parodies The Oregon Trail but with a modern setting and zombies added in as the main threat. The 2023 movie Organ Trail is unrelated to that game despite being similarly inspired by The Oregon Trail.

Like The Oregon Trail, the movie is set in the 19th century, though a few decades later than the game. It's also more of a horror Western than a historical adventure, fitting into the recent trend of low-budget, gore-driven scary movies inspired by...

The Most Disturbing Moments In I See You, Ranked
Image
"I See You" defies expectations. What begins as a typical crime thriller mutates into something more intricate and profound. Devon Graye penned the script, blending together social commentary on child abuse, infidelity, police corruption, and homelessness. At the heart of the film is the concept of phrogging -- when a person or persons secretly squat inside someone else's home. Director Adam Randall elevates the film with long static shots, emotional character close-ups, and methodical dolly glides. The camera work here takes on a life all its own. But let's not forget the film's chill-inducing score, courtesy of composer William Arcane, which punctuates the film's vital and mouth-dropping moments.

Initially, "I See You" arrived in theaters in late 2019 and grossed just over $1 million at the box office. But when the film hit Netflix, it went viral -- scoring top slots in the streamer's daily Top 10 list. As we revisit this harrowing movie,...

Oregon Trail Survival Horror Western Film 'Organ Trail' Official Trailer
Image
"Who are you running from!?" "Devil..." Paramount Movies has revealed the trailer for an indie western horror thriller titled Organ Trail – yes that title is a purposeful riff on the ol' Oregon Trail. Hopefully no one dies of dysentery watching this junk film... Abigale and her family fall victim to a ruthless gang while making their way across the Oregon Trail. As the only survivor, she will do whatever it takes to retrieve her one earthly possession, her family's horse, from the clutches of the bloodthirsty bandits. Oh yeah, bring it on! Take them down! If she can? Starring Zoé De Grand Maison, Nicholas Logan, Mather Zickel and Olivia Applegate, with Clé Bennett, Sam Trammell, and Jessica Frances Dukes. This seems like a mess of a genre film, with tons of tropes & twists thrown in for no good reason. Probably not worth a watch. // Continue Reading ›...

Organ Trail Trailer: Your Favorite 90s Computer Game Goes Horror
Image
The trailer for Organ Trail reveals a horror movie based on the popular 90s computer game. The Oregon Trail is an educational game that was created to teach grade school students about the realities of the wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon during the 1800s. The educational computer game was later parodied by Organ Trail, which reimagined it as a zombie survival game, and is now making an unexpected leap to the big screen.

Today, Paramount released a surprise trailer for Organ Trail, which can be watched below:

Set in Montana during 1870, the trailer follows a young girl named Abigale and her family traveling across the Oregon Trail. After her family falls victim to a band of bloodthirsty bandits and Abigale is the sole survivor of the attack, she must do whatever it takes to reclaim her family's only possession, a horse, from the clutches of the ruthless gang.

Organ Trail: Paramount horror Western earns R rating with strong violence
Image
Last year, we heard the awesome news that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to a horror Western project with the brilliant title Organ Trail (inspired by the real life Oregon Trail, a wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon back in the 1800s). The film has since made its way through production, and while we still don’t know when exactly Paramount intends to release Organ Trail, it has taken an important step toward its release: it has secured a rating from the Motion Picture Association. Organ Trail has earned an R rating for “strong violence, language and some sexual references.”

“True Blood” – HBO Has Driven a Stake Through the Heart of That Reboot Series
Image
As you may recall, it was announced back in 2020 that HBO was developing a series reboot of their hit vampire series “True Blood,” with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa leading the charge. Based on the novels by Charlaine Harris and created by Alan Ball, HBO’s vampire/werewolf/were-panther/you-name-it series aired between 2008 and 2014, officially coming to an end after seven seasons and 80 episodes.

But what’s the latest on HBO’s “True Blood” reboot? Well, according to a new article from Variety this week, those plans from back in 2020 are dead-in-the-water here in 2023.

HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys tells Variety that while a few scripts had been written for a potential “True Blood” reboot, nothing ended up coming together. It seems the project was only ever in the early stages, and HBO wasn’t confident enough to proceed. That doesn’t mean “True Blood” will Never be back, but...

HBO Puts a Stake in True Blood Reboot
Anna Paquin, Ryan Kwanten, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Nelsan Ellis, and Rutina Wesley in True Blood (2008)
True Blood is not returning on HBO.

Despite a new series set in the Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer series universe, the premium cabler has put a stake in those plans.

Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and HBO Max, revealed as much in a new interview with Variety.

Bloys said that despite a few scripts, "nothing felt like it got there," and the series is no longer in the works.

Returning to the universe would be a tough sell because the 2014 series finale didn't exactly go out on the best of terms.

It was a near-unanimously terrible final episode that disregarded the components of the series that made it successful for seven seasons.

Based on Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, the original series focused on telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire.
