On Saturday, June 7, at 8pm Eastern / 7pm Central, Lifetime will be airing the “ripped from the headlines” film Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story – and Deadline has let us known that the cast of the film includes Steve Guttenberg of the Police Academy franchise, Jana Kramer of One Tree Hill, and Rachel Stubington of Shrinking, with Guttenberg taking on the role of a real-life serial killer.

Directed by Lee Gabiana from a script written by Shawn Linden and Pamela Gray, Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story is based on the true story of Heather Robinson, who was abducted as a baby and raised by the family of a serial killer who was convicted of murdering her mother. Melissa Joan Hart will star in and executive produce a new Lifetime thriller, “Killing the Competition,” TheWrap can reveal exclusively.

The juicy thriller, which debuts Saturday, March 1, at 8 p.m. Et, stars Hart as Elizabeth Fenwick, a loving mother in her 40s who becomes enraged after her daughter is cut from her alma mater’s dance team. Hart also serves as an EP on the movie via her company Hartbreak Films.

Inspired by actual events, “Killing the Competition” follows Elizabeth, who was once her high school’s star dancer and prom queen, as she and her husband, Steve (Eddie Mills), help craft a similar path for their daughter, Grace (Lily Brooks O’Briant).

When Grace doesn’t make the team, however, Elizabeth becomes obsessed with the star of the dance team, Hannah (Valerie Loo), and her mother Nicole (Anzu Lawson), and eventually becomes involved in a shocking kidnapping plot.

Following the headlines and debate surrounding the guardianships of Wendy Williams and Britney Spears, the network has ordered a movie about a court-appointed guardianship gone wrong.

The Bad Guardian will star Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) and La La Anthony (La La’s Full Court Life) and “is inspired by countless true stories of individuals who have been put in the care of a guardian by the courts and raises the question — are these caretakers helpful or harmful?”

When I met with screenwriter/director Robert Tinnell for a conversation, he told me how much the film is based on his childhood memories. In today’s film news roundup, the Gotham Awards have been set for Dec. 2, “The Twentieth Century” and “Feast of the Seven Fishes” are acquired and The Writers Lab selects a dozen participants.

The Independent Filmmaker Project announced that the 29th Ifp Gotham Awards will take place this year at Cipriani in New York City on Dec. 2.

The Gotham Awards are one of the first major shows during awards season. Submissions for the competitive categories opened Thursday and close on Sept. 19. Categories include Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Breakthrough Actor, the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award and two television categories – Breakthrough Series (over 40 minutes) and Breakthrough Series (under 40 minutes).

Last year, Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider” won the Best Feature Award, following previous winners “Call Me By Your Name,” “Moonlight,” “Spotlight” and “Birdman.”

Nominees will be announced Oct. 24.

Shout! Studios has hooked North American rights to Feast of the Seven Fishes, the comedy-drama written and directed by Robert Tinnell based on his graphic novel and Italian cookbook of the same name. Skyler Gisondo, Madison Iseman, Josh Helman, Addison Timlin lead a cast that includes Joe Pantoliano and Paul Ben-Victor.

The rollout for the pic from Tinnell’s Allegheny Image Factory and Witty Michaels Entertainment begins in November with a theatrical release timed to the start of the holiday season. Shout! will also distribute the pic from on VOD, digital, broadcast and home entertainment.

A.J. Cook, Agnes Bruckner and Eden Brolin are set to star in Back Fork, an indie drama from actor-turned-director Josh Stewart.

Stewart also toplines Back Fork, which he wrote and is directing. Production began Thursday in Back Fork, W.V.

Stewart is also producing with Jeffrey Tinnell and Robert Tinnell. Tony Sgro is executive producing.

The drama deals with opioid addiction, a timely topic as it has become a national health crisis in the U.S. and President Donald Trump spoke on the topic Tuesday. The location and situations are close to Stewart’s heart, as the filmmaker is from West Virginia.

He’s a sympathetic, non- maniac this time, if you don’t count his tendency to go into trances and smother random houseguests. Of the Edgar Allan variety that is, not the police variety. Hannover House has announced a home video release date of March 6, 2012 for “Edgar Allan Poe’s Requiem for the Damned,” a short film anthology set timed to coincide with the release of the John Cusack-starring The Raven, out March 9th. I attended my first big comic book show back during the Paleolithic Age. It was either Phil Seuling’s first or second New York Convention, and it was a blast. There were about 500 of us in a Broadway hotel, and at least 475 of us didn’t realize there were so many people who were, in this respect, just like us. We realized we were not alone.

In October, just in time for Halloween, Monsterverse will be releasing Volume One of its new graphic novel series Flesh and Blood written by Robert Tinnell and illustrated by Neil D. Vokes. Q1. Who are you, and how can people learn more about you and your work?

Nv: Neil Vokes, artist. I can be found via my "That's All Vokes!" blog and in the "That's All Vokes!" Yahoo! group.

Q2. What brought you to this moment as a creator?...

We got word today that a pretty interesting addition has been made to the "Monsterverse Horror Comics Ate My Brain" panel being held at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 22nd: Werewolf screenwriter Michael Tabb.

Werewolf, you may recall, is the new stand-alone film from Universal that was originally slated to be a sequel to its less than warmly received The Wolfman from 2010. Maybe we'll finally get some clarification as to the exact nature of the upcoming film to be directed by Louis Morneau (reboot, redux, sequel, or what) during the panel.

As for his Monsterverse connection, Tabb will be writing a sinister nod to "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" for an upcoming issue of Monsterverse's acclaimed Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave horror anthology comic book series.

Back in the days when I was a young, fledgling horror fan, magazines and comics about my beloved genre were not nearly as readily available as they are today. At a time when Forry Ackerman’s Famous Monsters of Filmland ruled the roost and Fangoria was just a glimmer in the eye of some ad executive, we “Monster Kids” got our genre updates the old fashioned (and highly unreliable) way - via word of mouth.

What started out as a joke between editors of the Daily Cross Hatch blog, Brian Heater and Sarah Morean, has stormed across the land to become a for us nerds to celebrate in tandem. Superheroes and supervillains, as well as many less-obvious graphic novel characters who don't wear costumes or have superpowers, are all soaring off the printed page.

Comic book writer Mike Mignola, whose Hellboy creation for Dark Horse comics has been adapted into two movies, said: "It never occurred to me in a billion years that somebody would make a film version of Hellboy (see picture). Now you have comic book publishers that pretty much exist as a development ground for film properties. So much of the visual language is already created."

According to Comics2Film at Mania.com [1], director Brad Anderson (The Machinist, Session 9) is set to direct a feature based on the 128 page epic and terrifying  graphic novel by Robert Tinnell and Todd Livngston, the creators of The Black Forest [2] and The Wicked West [3].
