H.G. Stoker was a submarine commander during the First World War and
started his acting career while in Turkish prisoner-of-war camps, he
and his crew had been captured after the sinking of their vessel, the
Australian submarine AE2. On his return to London at the war's end he
continued his interest in the stage.
