‘Dom’ Seasons 1-2 Recap & Ending: Everything To Know Before Season 3
Image
Latin American shows are known for their over-the-top dramatic acting and dialogue. The shows are branded telenovelas for the same reason, and several Ott platforms have taken up this style of filmmaking and developed content following this trope. There are only a few shows that genuinely want to put forward human stories and allow the audience to be sucked into the world of gangsters and drug mafias. One of them has to be the famous Narcos series developed by Netflix.

Dom, created by Breno Silveira, was based on the novel by Tony Bellato and was a two-season-long saga based on the real-life characters ‘Pedro Dom’ and ‘Victor Lomba.’ The makers of the show merged the stories of the two figures and presented a hauntingly gripping story of crime and corruption, but at heart, it was a sad story of a deteriorating relationship between a father and his son. Victor Dantas,...

Cannes film review: 'Me You Them'
Andrucha Waddington in Lope (2010)
Dona Flor has got nothing on Darlene Linhares. Dona may have had two husbands, but one was a ghost. Darlene not only has three, but they're all very much alive and abiding -- more or less peacefully -- in the same house in the backwaters of Brazil.

"Me You Them" once again underscores how mutually beneficial are the production deals Columbia is striking within the Brazilian film industry. As with "Central Station", Sony Pictures Classics might have a specialty venue success story on its hands here if the distributor is willing to make a similar marketing push. For "Me You Them" is just offbeat and exotic enough to represent a refreshing take on human relationships for U.S. audiences.

Start with the fact this is no fluffy sex comedy with three handsome beaus and one knockout woman. While the cast features big names in Brazilian entertainment, only one, Luiz Vasconcelos, can be considered young and handsome. Nor is Regina Case, who plays Darlene, going to be accused of being glamorous.

But she does possess enough earth-mother sensuality to lend credibility to her harem in reverse. Her dazzling smile and surprising physical grace make Darlene into a primal force in the lives of these three men.

And while the film is often funny, its 30-year-old director, Andrucha Waddington, wisely doesn't go looking for laughs. Life is tough in these hardscrabble backlands, so he respects the characters and their environment enough to give viewers a realistic portrait of a precarious existence.

He and writer Elena Soarez reveal their story in a manner more dramatic than comic. Consequently, the viewer is never quite certain how the tension will play out. One almost feels that with a slightly different temperament in even one of the characters, the story would plunge down a completely different path -- perhaps even a tragic one.

Cinematographer Breno Silveira gives the rugged Bahia countryside a forbidding beauty. And Gilberto Gil, a leading figure in Brazilian pop music from the 1960s, supplies a highly likable score.
