Stargate : La Porte des étoiles (1994)
Stargate creator confident the franchise will be revived, sooner or later
Stargate : La Porte des étoiles (1994)
Could one of the most iconic sci-fi shows of all time be coming back? The creator of Stargate sure hopes so!

Stargate has always been unique in that it’s the rare case of a TV franchise that’s become more memorable than the movie that inspired it. Indeed, mention Stargate, and most people will automatically think of the TV show and its spinoffs rather than the 1994 film.

Sadly, the franchise has been pretty dormant since Stargate Universe ended its short run in 2014. There have been numerous talks of a reboot or sequel, but nothing concrete yet. However, longtime writer and executive producer Brad Wright addressed the state of the franchise during a recent stage appearance at FedCon 33 in Bonn, Germany:

Yes, there probably will be another Stargate. No, I don’t know when. … These are smart people. They know that they don’t want to piss off the people...

Kurt Russell's Stargate Movie Is Streaming On The Perfect Service For A Revival
Image
In 1994, director Roland Emmerich unwittingly kicked off one of the most expansive and detailed sci-fi franchises of the last few decades with "Stargate." Though the movie was initially supposed to start a "Stargate" film trilogy, those plans were abandoned after the movie debuted, and instead we got multiple TV continuations and spin-offs -- most notably with "Stargate Sg-1," which picked up where Emmerich's movie had left off. Ever since, the "Stargate" franchise has continued to grow, comprising multiple TV series, direct-to-home-media movies, comic books, video games, and novels.

But back in 1994, such a sprawling saga must have seemed like a distant dream to Emmerich, who just wanted to tell a cool sci-fi story. "Stargate" was the result. The movie starred Kurt Russell as Army colonel Jack O'Neill, who, alongside archaeologist and Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader), leads a team of experts through the titular portal to an Egyptian-style alien world.

Locarno: Radu Jude, Abdellatif Kechiche & ‘Viet And Nam’ Filmmaker Trương Minh Quý Among Directors Set To Debut New Works In Competition
Image
Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival will debut 17 features, including new works by Radu Jude and Abdellatif Kechiche, as part of its 2025 competition. This year’s event runs from August 6 to 16.

The festival announced its competition lineups this morning. The Radu Jude feature is his much-talked-about Dracula. The film was shot in Transylvania and is said to blend several takes on the Dracula story. Teasing the project as last year’s Locarno Film Festival, Jude said: “I am from Romania. My father is actually from Transylvania. It’s time that someone from Romania does a Dracula film. It’s only Hollywood that has done it 1,000 times. We shouldn’t let Hollywood dominate our Dracula.”

The Abdellatif Kechiche feature is Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due, the third edition in his controversial Mektoub series. Ben Rivers, a Locarno regular, will debut his latest feature, Mare’s Nest. Scroll down for the full Loarno lineup.

Alison Brie and Dave Franco in Together (2025)
JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see the body horror film Together at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and said that “horror fans are going to have a blast” with this one when it makes its way out into the world. You can check it out in the embed above.

15 best sci-fi/fantasy shows of the 1990s, ranked
Image
The 1990s were a time when science fiction finally started to be taken seriously by mainstream audiences. Despite a few duds, the decade glittered with series that took chances, bringing sci-fi and fantasy to life. Syndication allowed some unique shows to became cult favorites. As the decade went on, the good shows outshone the bad.

Some shows became monster success stories while others were short-lived but as seen today as pioneers of the genre. For the purposes of this list, shows that started in 1999 but got better in the 2000s are left off (like Angel and Farscape), since they don't have enough ties to the '90s. It’s tough, but here’s how the 15 best sci-fi and fantasy shows of the 1990s rank against each other. Hopefully you're reminded how magical this decade was.

15. Stargate Sg-1 (1997-2002)

The only reason Stargate Sg-1 is low on the list is because...

10 Films to See in July
Image
After highlighting the best films from the first half of this year, it’s time to venture into the second leg of 2025 with July’s lineup. While perhaps only our number-one pick will make it to year-end lists, there’s still plenty to look forward to, from riveting documentaries to genre delights.

10. Diciannove (Giovanni Tortorici; July 25)

While he stays prolific on the directing side by following last year’s Challengers and Queer with this year’s After the Hunt, Luca Guadagnino is also lending producing expertise to a number of projects. Along with Dea Kulumbegashvili’s April and the Sundance premiere Atropia, he’s also backed Giovanni Tortorici’s directorial debut Diciannove, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and follows a new student arriving in Siena. From just the first few passages, one can easily recognize the director and producer’s shared sensibility for drawing out a deeply felt sense of style.

Stargate Sg-1 Had To Make Some Major Changes Thanks To The Air Force
Image
"Stargate Sg-1" doesn't seem like the kind of show that maintained any significant dedication to realism. After all, this was a sci-fi series about a crew of intergalactic explorers who travelled the universe via an ancient portal. But it turns out authenticity was more integral to the series than you might think, at least in one important way.

In the world of the Stargate, the Stargate program itself is part of the U.S. Air Force, and it seems that particular branch of the military was a big fan of the show. The Air Force recognized Richard Dean Anderson for his depiction of Air Force General Jack O'Neil when Chief of Staff General John P. Jumper made him an honorary brigadier general for "the show's continuous positive depiction of the service." General Jumper himself also appeared in scenes from the season 7 episode "The Lost City, Part 2," which followed a cameo appearance...

How Many Times Did Daniel Jackson Die In Stargate?
Image
When it came time to turn Roland Emmerich's 1994 blockbuster "Stargate" into a TV series, "Stargate Sg-1" creators Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner were faced with recasting every character. Kurt Russell certainly wasn't going to come back as Jack O'Neill, the leader of the intrepid Stargate team, and neither was James Spader as Egyptologist and linguist Daniel Jackson. That meant Wright and Glassner had to start from square one when it came to the cast of their new show — though five actors from the movie actually did come back for one of the three main "Stargate" shows that sprang up in the wake of Emmerich's film. None of them, however, were main cast members.

After securing "Macgyver" star Richard Dean Anderson for the role of O'Neill, Wright and Glassner were evidently impressed with how well Canadian actor Michael Shanks could imitate James Spader, leading them to cast him in the role of Jackson.

A Stargate Movie Has An Impressive Guinness World Record That Will Be Hard To Beat
Image
This post contains spoilers for the "Stargate" franchise.

In 2006, "Stargate Sg-1" was abruptly canceled after an eventful 10-season run, but this didn't spell the end of the beloved "Stargate" franchise. In fact, there was still hope for promising new stories about the strangest corners of the galaxy, as evidenced by the then-ongoing "Stargate Atlantis," which was on its third season when "Sg-1" came to an end. Moreover, several franchise projects were brewing at the time, including the distinct and ambitious "Stargate Universe," along with two direct-to-video movies that would serve as sequels to "Sg-1." While franchise producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper were preoccupied with fresh and varied ideas, anything related to "Sg-1" automatically took precedence, as this particular offshoot has always been the beating heart of "Stargate."

"Sg-1" revolves around the titular exploration team, who use the Stargate devices to travel across the galaxy (while ensuring that the...

The Characters With The Most Appearances In Stargate Sg-1
Image
It's a testament to the talents of everyone involved in "Stargate Sg-1" that it lasted for ten whole seasons before being cancelled by the Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy). After all, there was no guarantee that just because Roland Emmerich's 1994 movie was a solid box office success, audiences would respond to a continuation series without Emmerich's involvement and which had lower production values and featured none of the central cast from the movie. Kurt Russell, who played Colonel Jack O'Neill in "Stargate," wasn't interested in "Sg-1." Neither was James Spader, who portrayed archaeologist Daniel Jackson in the movie.

You can imagine, then, that launching and maintaining a series under these conditions seemed like somewhat of a challenge. But showrunners Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner were confident enough that they could rise to it that they each independently pitched their version of a "Stargate" series to MGM Television, before being paired...

Together: Neon’s new body horror flick has a new teaser with a JoBlo quote
Michael Shanks at the 2009 Leo Awards
A few months ago, at the Sundance Film Festival, I was lucky enough to attend the world premiere of Michael Shanks’s Together, a body horror flick that stars real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie. In it, they play a co-dependent couple who find themselves physically bonding in horrifying ways too good to spoil in a story like this. Now, to celebrate the movie’s upcoming release, they’ve put out a new teaser that opens with a JoBlo quote! Check it out above.

Of course, the release of Together has been somewhat marred by controversy, with a writer-director named Patrick Henry Phelan stating it was plagiarized from his independent film, Better Half. The writer-director of Together, Michael Shanks, vehemently denied these claims,...

‘Together’ Director Michael Shanks Issues Statement Strongly Protesting Idea-Theft Accusation
Image
On May 13, production, financing, and distribution company StudioFest filed a copyright lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging that Alison Brie and Dave Franco had turned down an offer to star in the studio’s film “Better Half,” and then developed their own concept of a body horror movie based on a co-dependent relationship, “Together,” with WME.

Now the director of “Together,” Michael Shanks, is firing back in a statement released via the X and Instagram accounts of the film’s distributor, Neon, which bought the completed feature for $17 million out of Sundance earlier this year, the biggest deal of the festival. The film had premiered to raves, with its sharp insights into what it means to be in a long-term relationship somehow then translated into grisly body horror visuals. Franco’s Tim and Brie’s Millie have been together for years and just at the moment that their relationship...

This Upcoming 100% Rotten Tomatoes Supernatural Horror Film Will Crawl Under Your Skin—Here’s All You Need To Know
Image
A Still From Together(Photo Credit –YouTube)

Fans of the horror genre are excited and look forward to the release of Together set to hit theaters on July 30. Debuting at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, this twisted and gut-wrenching supernatural horror film from first-time director Michael Shanks has earned a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. And it’s not just a midnight flick for gorehounds. Instead, it’s something far stranger, stickier, and scarier.

What Is The Plot Of Together?

Together follows the journey of a couple, Millie and Tim, played by Alison Brie and Dave Franco, as they relocate from the city to a sleepy rural town to start over. However, things take a terrible turn right as they’re getting used to their new lives. The couple falls into a hidden pit during a storm while hiking through the surrounding woods. Desperate and trapped overnight, Tim takes a drink from a spooky underground pool.

‘Together’ Filmmaker Michael Shanks, Neon & WME Respond To Suit Alleging Copyright Infringement
Image
Michael Shanks, the writer and director of the forthcoming body horror flick Together, has issued a statement in response to a recently filed lawsuit accusing him of copyright infringement.

Noting that the allegations are “devastating” and have taken “a heavy toll,” Shanks asserted that the relationship tale is “completely rooted in my own personal life.”

The filmmaker goes on to say that the suggestion of copyright infringement “not only undermines the work but also attempts to erase the emotional and professional journey I’ve taken to bring it to life.”

Along with Shanks, actor-producers Alison Brie and Dave Franco are named in the lawsuit, along with WME — which reps all three — and the film’s distributor, Neon. Filed May 13, the suit (read it here) alleges that Together is a “blatant rip-off” of Better Half, a 2023 indie written and directed by Patrick Henry Phelan.

In their own joint statement, Neon and WME said,...

Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s ‘Together’ Director Responds to Idea Theft Lawsuit and Calls It ‘Deeply Unsettling’
Image
Michael Shanks achieved a major breakthrough at Sundance, where his feature debut, “Together,” sold for a whopping $17 million to Neon.

But for the 34-year-old Australian writer-director, success has also come with a downside. Last month, he and the film’s co-stars, Alison Brie and Dave Franco, were accused in a lawsuit of stealing the idea for the body horror film from a little-seen indie comedy called “Better Half.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Shanks said his film is rooted in his own personal story of love and loss, and that he finds the accusation incredibly dismaying.

“To have this called into question is not only deeply upsetting but entirely untrue,” he said. “To now be accused of stealing this story — one so deeply based on my own lived experience, one I’ve developed over the course of several years — is devastating and has taken a heavy toll.”

‘Together’ Filmmaker Rebukes Copyright Lawsuit, Defends Dave Franco-Alison Brie Film as ‘Deeply Based on My Own Lived Experience’
Image
“Together” writer-director Michael Shanks broke his silence Wednesday on the copyright infringement lawsuit filed against him, WME, distributor Neon and stars and producers Dave Franco and Alison Brie.

Defending the independent body horror feature as one of his own creation, the filmmaker said the script — which centers on a couple, Tim and Millie, who become physically fused together as a metaphor for co-dependency — is “deeply based on my own lived experience” and inspired by his 16-year relationship that itself has seen an “entanglement of identity, love and co-dependence.”

“It’s not just a script; it’s a reflection of something deeply personal,” Shanks said in a statement obtained by TheWrap. “Tim’s story, his love for Millie, his relationship to his family, his relationship to unfulfilled ambitions as a musician, is completely rooted in my own personal life. I lost my father at a young age in the same way our main character does,...

Dave Franco, Alison Brie’s ‘Together’ Lawyer Slams Plagiarism Suit: These Films Are ‘Not Remotely Similar’ (Exclusive)
Image
The team behind the Alison Brie and Dave Franco film “Together” are pushing back on a copyright lawsuit, saying the film is “not remotely similar” to the plaintiffs’ work, “Better Half.”

“Together” was a hit at Sundance in January, selling to Neon for a reported $17 million. It is set to be released in theaters on July 30.

The producers of “Better Half” sued in May, claiming that “Together” is a “blatant ripoff” of their film, which they claimed had been offered to Brie and Franco in 2020 and which their agent had turned down. Both projects involve a couple that become physically stuck to each other through a mysterious force.

In a May 21 letter to the plaintiffs’ lawyers, obtained by Variety, attorney Nicolas Jampol argued that “Together” was independently created and that any similarities are generic and not subject to copyright protection.

“Your client does not own this concept,” Jampol wrote. “Neither do our clients.

South Korea’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan) is further embracing AI with an opening film driven by the technology, a dedicated conference and an ambitious goal to train 10,000 filmmakers over the next five years.

The 29th edition of the genre festival, set to run from July 3-13, will open with the Asian premiere of About A Hero, a hybrid documentary that fed all of Werner Herzog’s screenplays into an AI programme to generate a script. Danny Boyle’s post-apocalyptic zombie film 28 Years Later is easily one of 2025’s most anticipated releases, especially among horror enthusiasts. Dave Franco’s Upcoming Horror Is at 100% and the Conjuring: Last Rites Can’t Relate
Image
It’s not often a film makes its debut with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, but Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s Together has done just that. Premiering at Sundance, this genre-bending horror flick has already stirred buzz with its blend of sci-fi, horror, and relationship troubles, all wrapped in a very indie, very chaotic package.

Meanwhile, the heavyweight horror franchise The Conjuring is gearing up for its next installment, Last Rites, but oddly still lacks a rating despite being just months from its release. Here’s how things are stacking up so far!

Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s Together is off to a killer start!!

Dave Franco’s Together is quickly becoming the indie horror movie to watch in 2025. Premiering at Sundance, the film has earned a flawless 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Alison Brie and Dave Franco appear in Together as an official selection of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

Taormina Film Festival Chief Tiziana Rocca Unveils ‘Mix of Genres’ Lineup for Starry Standout Edition
Image
Italy’s Taormina Film Festival is set for a standout 71st edition with a rich mix of genres – including some potential discoveries – on display, plus a generous dose of star power within a new format that attempts to revive the storied Sicilian event and put it back on the international map.

Marketing guru Tiziana Rocca, who has close Hollywood ties and is a festivals specialist, is back at the helm eight years after she was forced to step down due to political infighting in 2017 following a five-year stint. Rocca’s first move has been to reintroduce a competitive section comprising 10 titles. They will be judged by a jury that, as previously announced, is headed by Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who won an Oscar for her role in “The Holdovers.”

The Taormina competition, unveiled on Thursday, comprises the world premieres of Whoopi Goldberg and Jeremy Irvine comedy “Leopardi & Co” by Italian director...

WME Plans to ‘Vigorously Defend’ Itself Against ‘Together’ Copyright Lawsuit
Image
Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s Sundance hit “Together” just might be coming apart. The indie feature, which was acquired by Neon in a $17 million deal out of Sundance, is at the center of a lawsuit alleging copyright infringement.

The lawsuit was filed on May 13 in Los Angeles Superior Court by StudioFest, which claims that actors Franco and Brie turned down an offer to star in 2023 film “Better Half” that the studio financed. The lawsuit accuses Franco, Brie, and agency WME of creating their own version of “Better Half” with fellow WME client Michael Shanks, who made his feature directorial debut with “Together” from a script he wrote. Neon, which bought the title and will release the film July 30, is also named in the lawsuit.

Both “Better Half” and “Together” are body horror dramas that follow a couple who literally become fused together. The lawsuit lists the similarities between the two films,...

‘Together’ (2025) Movie: Cast, Release Date, Plot, and All You Need to Know
Image
It’s starting to look like a great year if you are into horror movies; from Ryan Coogler’s classic Sinners, to the movie saga that traumatized a whole generation like Final Destination: Bloodline, set to release this year. One addition to the list of horror movies coming out this year is the Michael Shanks-directed movie Together.

Stepping aside from the usual jump scares and ghosts with horrifying faces, Together does something different. It takes a more supernatural approach with evil forces making physical changes to their bodies. Looking at the trailer, it might not seem like the loudest or the flashiest horror movie, but it sure seems like the most intriguing one.

The premise is thrilling for sure, but it’s the emotional storytelling and the sense of unease created through the setting’s atmosphere that you are strangely immersed in their eerie situations. It’s almost as...

One Stargate Sg-1 Actor Played 9 Different Characters
Image
After Roland Emmerich's 1994 "Stargate" movie debuted, there were actually plans for a "Stargate" trilogy of films. Instead, a continuation TV series followed, but Emmerich was nowhere in sight when "Sg-1" arrived in 1997. Neither were stars of the film, Kurt Russell and James Spader. Instead, "Sg-1" was overseen by showrunners Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner with "MacGyver "star Richard Dean Anderson replacing Russell in the role of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Michael Shanks replacing Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson.

In some ways, it might seem as though a TV series would be easier to make than a sequel to a successful Hollywood blockbuster. For one thing, TV was not yet in the so-called "golden age" that would arise in the years that followed its debut, and as such, audiences didn't always expect movie-level production values from their small-screen entertainment. On the other hand, a show about an elite squadron that...
