“Varg Veum” – TV series review
Image
Trond Espen Seim stars as the title character in the Norwegian detective series “Varg Veum,” streaming on Topic. Courtesy of MHz Choice.

“Varg Veum” is the eponymous title of this Norwegian crime series. The star (Trond Espen Seim) is a former social worker turned private detective due to frustration with the failings of public service agencies. More accurately, he was fired for beating up a drug dealer who was pushing product to kids he was trying to protect. In classic genre style, Varg is a scruffy fellow with a marginal income trying to do some meaningful good for people and the community between times he has to tail cheating spouses to keep his business afloat. The Norwegian series aired from 2007 – 2012 and must have been popular in its homeland, since Seim returned as the same character in about a dozen movie incarnations filmed during and for several years after its run.

The MIPCOM Hot List: Buyers Brace for “Fewer, Better, Bigger Shows”
Image
Bye-bye, Peak TV. After more than a decade of unprecedented production growth, the international television industry is bracing for an era of tighter budgets and more bean counting.

“Instead of subscriber growth at all costs, now the focus is on production and investment and getting the balance sheet right,” says Cathy Payne, CEO of Banijay Rights, the sales arm of the production giant behind reality TV hits Big Brother and high-end dramas Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. “I hate using the phrase because everyone says it, but the focus now is on ‘fewer, better, bigger shows.’ ”

The variety of shows on offer at this year’s global TV market in Cannes, MIPCOM, suggests every buyer, at every budget, should find something to fill their slots. And while THR’s annual hot list of the market’s best new drama series ranges from a by-the-book NBC procedural to an erotic comedy...

The Thing prequel director on scrapped sequel plans and FX regrets
Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
A dozen years have gone by since the release of director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch the prequel Here). Looking back at the project now, van Heijningen has some regrets over the way the special effects were handled on the film, and that he was never able to make the sequel they had plans for.

Directed by van Heijningen from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer and based on the short story Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell (using the pen name Don A. Stuart), The Thing 2011 has the following synopsis: After Norwegian researchers discover an alien ship buried in the ice, paleontologist Kate Lloyd joins the team at the isolated Arctic outpost to investigate. She finds an organism that appears to have perished in the crash eons ago but, in fact, is about to awake. Freed from its icy prison,...

‘Another Round’ Star Maria Bonnevie To Lead Viaplay Norway Original ‘In The Name Of Love’
Image
Exclusive: Another Round star Maria Bonnevie is leading Viaplay’s latest Norwegian original, a comedy-drama inspired by award-winning director Bård Breien’s unusual childhood.

In the Name of Love is set in 1970s Norway, where a primary school teacher, played by Bonnevie, does everything to keep her husband Lars’ (Trond Espen Seim) highly profitable porn business secret. Lars sees his line of work as an act of social protest, however, and their two sons, played by real-life brothers Jakob and Jonas Oftebro, are caught in the middle – until a family confrontation becomes inevitable.

Bonnevie starred opposite Mads Mikkelsen in Thomas Vinterberg’s Academy Award-nominated Another Round.

The show is the latest in a long line of Nordic streamer Viaplay’s originals, with 70 set to premiere this year. Deadline revealed Norwegian feature Listen Up! starring People Just do Nothing’s Asim Chaudhry in June.

The Thing (2011) - Blu-ray Review
2011.s The Thing is an unnecessary CGI-slick prequel to John Carpenter.s 1982 classic sci-fi/horror film The Thing. It isn.t horrible and does several things right, but is easily forgettable as soon as the end credits roll. Based on John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There?," the prequel was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and written by Eric Heisserer. The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Seim, Kim Bubbs, Jørgen Langhelle, Jan Gunnar Røise, Stig Henrik Hoff, Kristofer Hivju, Jo Adrian Haavind, and Carsten Bjørnlund. The Thing Blu-ray and DVD Arrive January 31st
An expedition of a lifetime becomes a subterranean nightmare in The Thing, the thrilling prelude to John Carpenter's 1982 film of the same name. Debuting on Blu-ray Combo Pack with UltraViolet, DVD, Digital Download and On Demand on January 31, 2011, The Thing stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World) as paleontologist Kate Lloyd who, along with the crew's pilot Carter (Joel Edgerton, Warrior), discovers a mysterious organism buried in the ice.

When a simple experiment frees the creature from its frozen prison, it unleashes a flood of chaos and paranoia upon the camp, pitting the team against one another. The Thing (1982)
Title: The Thing Directed By: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Seim, Kim Bubbs, Kristofer Hivju, Stig Henrik Hoff When you’re trying to live up to the standards, or perhaps exceed those set by John Carpenter’s The Thing, you’ve got your work cut out for you. While Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s version offers a nice thrill, it doesn’t come close to, well, replicating the elements that made Carpenter’s piece iconic. It’s 1982 in Antarctica. A team of Norwegian scientists travel across the snowy tundra trying to track a mysterious signal. Upon pinpointing the position of...

Interview: Talking 'The Thing' With Director Matthijs Van Heijningen
In the thriller "The Thing" a group of researchers encounter something not of this world that has the ability to replicate any living being. Dr. Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) joins a Norwegian research team in Antartica led by Edvard Wolner (Trond Espen Seim) who has stumbled across a creature buried in ice. When this simple experiment frees the thing from its frozen prison, Kate must  stop it from killing everyone and anything. She soon discovers that this parasite suddenly mimics anything that it touches therefore putting human against human as it fights to survive. I had the opportunity to sit and speak with "The Thing" director  Matthijs Van Heijningen about the challenges directing his first film, the design of the alien, casting relatively unknown actors, and his personal interpretation of the films ending. Warning there are some spoilers below! How did you like directing your first film? Matthijs: It was good.

B-Roll Footage for The Thing
Some of the footage in the video shows the creature design. But to me the most spectacular feature is that you can see how the Norwegian base camp is recreated almost identically to the one you saw briefly in the 1982 version. Even the block of ice that the creature escapes from is identical. Another great piece about this footage is that you can see the locale in which they filmed. This wasn't filmed in some studio, this was done in the snow covered mountains in Canada. The look of the 1982 film, with that feeling that the location was devoid of life outside of the camp really added to the creepiness of the overall film, and this one seems to be right on target. The prequel is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen jr. The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joel Edgerton, Dennis Storhøi, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Jonathan...

New International One-Sheet for The Thing
While Russia has long been known for dealing with harsh conditions such as excessive cold, snow, and ice, I don't think they're quite ready to deal with an shape-shifting extraterrestrial menace. Still, that's what's coming in this latest one-sheet.

Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr., is directing from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer and Ronald D. Moore. The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Jonathan Walker, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Dennis Storhøi, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Eric Christian Olsen, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jan Gunnar Røise, Kristofer Hivju, and Jo Adrian Haavind.

Look for The Thing in theatres on October 14, 2011.

Synopsis

It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. Something is Beneath the Ice in this Russian Poster for 'The Thing'?
Photo: Universal Pictures I don't remember the specifics of the alien spacecraft from John Carpenter's The Thing, but I have to admit I like this new Russian poster from KinoGallery (via ComingSoon) for the film as it isn't determined to sell the alien, but instead offers a more subtle approach to the horror that lies beneath.

I have to also say I am happy to see Universal is not only screening The Thing, but here in Seattle will screen it on a Tuesday rather than a Wednesday, which is a big deal when it comes to daily and weekly newspapers in terms of meeting deadlines. A Wednesday night or later press screening of a new film is often a sign the studio has little confidence and would prefer to not see a critic's opinion in the paper.

On top of the above poster, yesterday Universal sent out a bunch of...

The Thing Red Band Trailer
Check out the very bloody red-band trailer for the remake of Universal Pictures’ The Thing (via IGN). Man is still the warmest place to hide.

There, a crew of international scientists has unearthed a remarkable discovery. But elation quickly turns to terrifying paranoia in the thriller The Thing, as the group of researchers encounters something inhuman that has the ability to turn itself into an exact replica of any living being.

Columbia University paleontologist Dr. Kate Lloyd (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.s Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has left behind the safety of her sterile laboratory and traveled to this desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime.

Joining a Norwegian research team led by Edvard Wolner (Fallen Angels. Trond Espen Seim) that has stumbled across a creature buried in the ice,...

'The Thing' Red Band Trailer Hopes To Scare Up Interest
Movie blogger reception to Universal's upcoming prequel The Thing, which hits theaters on October 14, has been a bit cold. This, of course, is first and foremost due to the high regard most people have for John Carpenter's classic 1982 feature, which in itself was a remake of Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby's 1951 film The Thing from Another World. All of this is to say first time feature helmer Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. has a steep hill ahead of him.

This prequel story takes place at an Antarctica research site where an alien spacecraft is found after which a shape-shifting alien terrorizes a team of scientists. The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen and Trond Espen Seim.

‘The Thing’ Red Band Trailer
With a theatrical release coming in just under a month, Universal Pictures have unveiled a new red-band trailer for their prequel to John Carpenter‘s The Thing. One of the things I admired in their Nycc panel was director Matthijs van Heijningen‘s insistence on using practical effects, but much of that seems to be lost here. Some of the kills here look fun though and I’m interested to see if they can make an engaging story when we already know the outcome. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, and Trond Espen Seim, check it out below via IGN and the original trailer here.

Synopsis:

First Creepy Clip and New Photo from The Thing
October 14 is just around the corner and I cannot freakin’ wait to see the prequel to John Carpenter’s “The Thing” when it finally hits theaters. I’m a fan of Carpenter’s, so I’m definitely looking forward to this film. Granted, we all know what’s going to happen to everyone, but I love the “who can you really trust?” paranoia vibe Carpenter established. But we’re here to talk about the upcoming prequel. After six new images from the film hit the web yesterday, the first clip from the film has been released, and it makes sure to set in the scare factor. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Stig Henrik Hoff, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Kristofer Hivju, Jan Gunnar Røise, and Jo Adrian Haavind. The Thing: Prequel's Creature Design & Video Breakdown of the 1982 Version
Uploaded by the unofficial The Thing Facebook page Was Childs an alien? The second part of the Video really answers this question, but the first part is great as well. It's funny I've watched this film probably twenty times and I always ask that question once the end happens. Finally we have real solid reasons to backup the speculation that Keith David's character was in fact infected. See if you agree with the assessment. The Thing Trailer
Imagine a parasitic like alien inhabiting your body. Not a friendly thought, right? Well, that is what you get with the first trailer for John Carpenter’s The Thing. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the film tells the story of ill-fated Norwegian research camp that dug up a shapeshifting alien something in the permafrost of Antarctica. Sounds familiar, right? The thriller stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Trond Espen Seim, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jonathan Walker, and Carsten Bjørnlund

Check out the trailer below.

Having never seen the first The Thing, my expectations are not that high. But judging from the trailer, the film should live up to the hype it is currently building. In addition to the trailer we have our first look at the poster for the film. Based on that, I can see that there are some scary changes in the wind.
