Why Jack Nicholson Didn't Make A Lot Of Westerns
Image
The now reclusive Jack Nicholson is a true cultural icon, to the extent that even established Hollywood legends are starstruck in his presence. He belongs to a bygone era of movie stars but is still very much with us, making the fact he hasn't appeared in a film since 2010's star-studded box office flop "How Do You Know," all the more disappointing.

The reasons why Nicholson disappeared from Hollywood are complicated, but one aspect has to do with the Marvel-ification of everything. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald in 2013, the veteran star said that he was really only concerned with making "films that move people" and had observed that "maybe people in their 20s and 30s don't actually want to be moved anymore." For Nicholson, "more bombs" and "more explosions" were the new norm, and he was adamant that he'd "never do that type of movie."

Clearly, Nicholson doesn't need the money,...

A Terrifying Twilight Zone Episode Was Inspired By A Writer's Real-Life Incident
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"The Twilight Zone" episode "Little Girl Lost" follows two suburban parents, Chris (Robert Sampson) and Ruth Miller (Sarah Robertson), who hear their young daughter Tina crying out in fear. When they go to her room, she's not there. With the help of physicist friend Bill (Charles Aidman), they discover a portal to the fourth dimension has opened in Tina's room and she's fallen through it. "Little Girl Lost" is the original "Coraline": a story about a young girl who crawls through a tunnel to a parallel dimension.

The episode mostly consists of the three adults standing huddled around Tina's room, calling to the invisible girl. When the fourth dimension is finally seen, it's rendered as an ethereal, fog-filled realm — the budget and constraints of '60s TV special effects wouldn't have permitted anything else.

"Little Girl Lost" is scary...

10 Cheesy Sci-Fi Horror Movies Like Chopping Mall
Image
Chopping Mall is a cheesy 1980s sci-fi horror movie with fun moments, teenage partying, and deadly laser-firing security robots called Killbots. Re-Animator, a black comedy horror film, follows Dr. Herbert West's experiments with resurrecting the dead, featuring gore and terrifying elements. Brainscan, a science-fiction slasher movie, follows a teen tormented by a video game host urging him to commit real murders, with an early take on virtual reality.

Chopping Mall is remembered as a cheesy yet classic sci-fi horror movie reminiscent of the other films produced at the time. The film follows a group of teens trapped overnight in a mall with deadly laser-firing security robots known as Killbots. Chopping Mall was made in 1986, an era known for its growing horror market, with slasher movies and predictive science fiction becoming signatures of the genre. The film is scary but not terrifying, especially now that the effects have aged, such...

One Twilight Zone Episode Inspired A Horror Classic – And One Very Annoyed Writer
Image
The last 70 years of science fiction, horror, and fantasy wouldn't just look remarkably different without the works of Richard Matheson, they'd be comparatively barren. Okay, this is a touch hyperbolic, but only a touch! Yes, we'd still have the transporting, thought-provoking works of maestros like Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, and so many others, but could you imagine living in a world sans such essential tales as "The Incredible Shrinking Man," "I Am Legend," "Hell House," and dozens upon dozens of eerily prescient (or just straight up horrifying) short stories? And these weren't just spellbinding reads. They formed the basis for many memorable movies, and, perhaps most influentially, 16 unforgettable episodes of "The Twilight Zone."

Countless writers and filmmakers have cited Matheson as crucial to their development as genre storytellers (Stephen King considers "Hell House" to be "the scariest haunted house novel ever written"), and you could argue that...

Stuart Gordon's Lovecraft Adaptations | A History and Analysis

Quick Links Re-Animator (1985) From Beyond (1986) Castle Freak (1995) Dagon (2001) Masters of Horror - “H.P. Lovecraft’s Dreams in the Witch-House” (2005) Stuart Gordon's Filmography Altogether (Spoilers)

With the recent release of Suitable Flesh, a film dedicated to Stuart Gordon, we've decided to take a look back at the director's Lovecraft projects to coincide with this tribute. Over a 20-year period, Gordon came out with four films and one TV episode based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft.

There were many reoccurring collaborators with him on these projects. Of note behind the camera is Dennis Paoli, who wrote all the scripts (sometimes with the assistance of others) and Richard Band, who provided the score for all but one of these projects. Then there was his impeccable casts, which frequently featured Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton. Let's walk through these masterful horror movies in chronological order.

‘City of the Living Dead’ 4K Review – Lucio Fulci’s Gore Shines in New Release from Cauldron Films
Image
Since launching in 2020, Cauldron Films has quickly established itself as a boutique label to watch for cult film fans. In addition to unearthing and restoring obscurities like The Crimes of the Black Cat, American Rickshaw, and Frankenstein ’80, they’ve secured a few heavy hitters. Their most recognizable title to date is Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead (originally released in the US as The Gates of Hell). Following an exclusive slipcase edition last year, a standard retail version of the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray set is available this week.

The 1980 Italian horror film is significant for kicking off Fulci’s thematically connected Gates of Hell trilogy, followed by The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery the next year. Developed in the wake of Fulci’s success with Zombie in 1979, City of the Living Dead features more undead ghouls but this time as accoutrements rather than a centerpiece.

1985 / 1:85 / Street Date August 8, 2017

Starring: Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton

Cinematography: Mac Ahlberg

Film Editor: Lee Percy

Written by Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli, William Norris

Produced by Brian Yuzna

Music: Richard Band

Directed by Stuart Gordon

Released in 1985, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator remains the grandest of Grand Guignols, a viscerally entertaining comedy that is just grindhouse enough for fans of Blood Feast and arthouse enough for connoisseurs of Francis Bacon’s more grisly canvases.

Originally scripted for Chicago’s Organic Theater Company by Gordon and co-writers Dennis Paoli and William Norris, Re-Animator was based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story, Herbert West – Re-Animator, first published in 1922. Set in the blandly generic college town of Arkham, Massachusetts, the action revolves in and around the classrooms of stately Miskatonic University’s medical school and the sterilized atmosphere of the academy’s dank morgue evoked so well by Mac Ahlberg’s lush cinematography.

Blu-ray Review: Bride Of Re-animator
Stuart Gordon’s debut feature, Re-Animator, isn’t just one of the best horror movies of the 1980s, but also one of the few rare perfect horror comedies ever made. Alongside Evil Dead 2, the original Re-Animator essentially helped invent the splatstick subgenre and announced Gordon as one of the most exciting voices in horror, plus, it turned genre royalty Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton into stars overnight. There’s almost no way it could be outdone in its sequel, 1990’s Bride of Re-Animator, though it’s not for lack of trying.

Brian Yuzna, producer of the first film, stepped into the director’s chair for the follow-up, which finds med student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) and Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) escaping to Peru months after the bloody and tragic events of Re-Animator. They continue to conduct their reanimation experiments on soldiers injured and killed in the midst of a bloody civil war,...

A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Miskatonic: 30 Years of Fear with Re-animator
1985. Horror was going through a sea change on the film front, as slashers were shown the door and creature features became the cool kids on campus again. People lined up to see vampires (Fright Night) and werewolves (Silver Bullet) and zombies (Day of the Dead), oh my—but my favorite subgenre, the Mad Scientist, came roaring back to life with director Stuart Gordon’s (From Beyond, Dagon) manic masterpiece debut, Re-Animator.

Released in October, Re-Animator proved once again that when properly executed, horror and humor are delightful bedfellows, co-conspirators with the noblest of intentions: to entertain. Horror, while certainly not easy to do well (scroll through Netflix on any given day), has it made in the shade compared to comedy. Humor is more subjective, and what rubs me as funny may chafe you as stupid or insipid. Most people will agree that The Exorcist is terrifying, but not everyone likes...

Cat Dead, Details Later: How Stuart Gordon Found Humor in H.P. Lovecraft
H.P. Lovecraft isn’t exactly known for his sense of humor. The late author, who has the very serious epitaph “I Am Providence” carved into his tombstone, spent his odd, secluded life penning tales of terror for pulp magazines. Lovecraft created the Cthulu mythos, and wrote story after story of mankind coming up against cosmic deities older than time itself. Page after page was devoted to human beings having their very sanity obliterated at the sight of unspeakable forces that were only a thin layer away from our own reality. These were tales of hopelessness, where all were doomed to some perilous demise.

With Lovecraft’s body of bleak work in mind, it’s curious that perhaps the most successful adaptation of one of his stories is also pretty damn funny as well. Stuart Gordon first set out to bring Lovecraft’s Herbert West–Reanimator to the stage with his...

If a budding horror geek was to ask what were the most important horror films that must be watch, I’m sure you could come up with a few. There is one though that should be on the lips of all horror fan, an eighties film that was so important to horror that it became infamous, especially in the UK where it too decades before we got an uncut version. In fact I consider myself lucky in getting the chance to see the unrated version on the big screen only a few years ago. Retro Active: Re-Animator (1985)
by Nick Schager

[This week's "Retro Active" pick is inspired by Tim Burton's resurrected-dog saga Frankenweenie.]

Reviving the old through careful and colorful synthesis, Re-Animator creates something new and unique through its combination of parts borrowed from Frankenstein, Hitchcock, and zombie cinema. Stuart Gordon's 1985 adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's serialized tale of a doctor who discovers the key to "reanimating" the dead is a work that thrives not on originality but on tone, as its elements are, taken at face value, old hat. Setting Lovecraft's tale in the present day, Gordon's film concerns Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs), introduced trying to subdue his Swiss mentor Dr. Gruber (Al Berry), who's frothing blood at the mouth after having been given a glowing reanimation agent that's turned him into a raving monster. Cut to Massachusetts' Miskatonic University, where West later comes to study, renting a room in the house of colleague Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott)—who's shagging Dean Halsey's (Robert Sampson) daughter Megan (Barbara Crampton)—and sparring with Dr.

Blu-ray Review: Remastered Edition of Gore Masterpiece ‘Re-Animator’
Chicago – Stuart Gordon’s “Re-Animator” is a gore masterpiece, one of the best horror movies of its type ever made. It is pure lunacy, the kind of movie that will be just as shocking to audiences decades from now as it was when audiences first saw a severed head sexually molest a captive woman. “Re-Animator” brilliantly reimagines the “Frankenstein” myth of bringing what has passed back to life in all its gruesome potential. And the new Blu-ray features a well-mastered HD transfer along with some great special features.

Rating: 5.0/5.0

There’s little need to overly polish “Re-Animator.” It’s a film for which a bit of grit and grain to the picture seems appropriate. And so the modestly remastered transfer on the Blu-ray makes for a good fit. It’s nothing you’re going to use to show off your TV but it looks right for the movie.

More impressive...
