Exclusive: Mario Van Peebles (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) has wrapped production in Montana on Outlaws, a new Western that he wrote, directed and stars in for Quiver. Others joining Van Peebles in major roles include Whoopi Goldberg (Till), Cedric the Entertainer (The Neighborhood), Edward James Olmos (Mayans M.C.), John Carroll Lynch (Big Sky), William Mapother (Son of Monarchs) and M. Emmet Walsh (The Immaculate Room).

Outlaws follows Chief (Van Peebles), a renegade cowboy putting together a multicultural team of new and old friends in order to ride into dangerous unsettled territory to retrieve gold from an abandoned mine. Hot on Chief’s tail is Angel (Mapother), a spurned lawman and Civil War veteran with a thirst for vengeance. So begins a cross-country journey, with Chief and his band of Outlaws crossing paths with a number of interesting historical characters along the way, including a true-to-life Stagecoach Mary played by Goldberg.

Written, directed by, and starring Brian Presley (The Great Alaskan Race), the action-packed western adventure Hostile Territory gallops onto Digital, Blu-ray and DVD June 14 from Well Go USA Entertainment. Former P.O.W. Jack Calgrove (Presley) is willing to move heaven and earth to be reunited with his children following the Civil War. After returning home, Jack finds out his wife has died and that his children, presumed orphans, are heading deep into the West aboard a train crossing contested territory in the midst of clashes between American settlers and Native American tribes. Calgrove and another former soldier are joined by a troop of Native American sharpshooters and a freed slave as they race to intercept the orphan train before all hope is lost.

Middle-Earth had come to Minneapolis. There was no doubt about that. Standing in line for Sean Astin’s autograph at Wizard World in 2014, I could see reminders of Peter Jackson’s epic J.R.R. Tolkien adaptations all around me. Everyone else in the long line seemed to be clutching action figures, photographs, and posters featuring Samwise and his Fellowship friends, with the Lord of the Rings celebration interrupted only by the occasional The Goonies or Rudy memorabilia.

As the line inched closer to Astin’s table, I decided that I could safely presume I was one of only a few people without Lord of the Rings memorabilia to be autographed, and I was most likely—okay, very likely—the only one in line holding a DVD copy of the 2007 horror film Borderland to get signed by the beloved actor.

Exclusive: Saban Films has picked up North American rights to writer/director Brian Presley’s action-western Hostile Territory (previously titled The Orphan Train) and is planning a theatrical release for 2022.

The pic stars Matt McCoy (The Hand that Rocks the Cradle), Brea Bee (Silver Linings Playbook), Brad Leland (Deepwater Horizon), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Craig Tate (King Richard) and Presley.

Set in post-civil war America, Hostile Territory tells the story of a Union soldier who is presumed dead as a Pow. When his children are mistakenly sent away on an orphan train to be placed in a new home, unlikely individuals unite for the greater good and children are forced to grow up quickly in this wild-west fight for equality.

Producers are Brian Presley, Christian Sosa, Timothy Patrick Cavanaugh, and Taliah Agdeppa at P12 Films, with Sean Leigh Hart, Devyn Reggio, and Will Wallace executive producing.

The biggest opener in France this week is Anne Fontaine’s Police, first seen at the Berlinale in February. Released by Studiocanal, the drama (also known as Night Shift) centres on three Parisian police officers – played by Omar Sy, Virginie Efira and Grégory Gadebois – who debate whether to deport an illegal immigrant (Payman Maadi) while transporting him to the airport.

Film and content financier BondIt Media Capital is teaming with Brian Presley’s P12 Films to back a slate of five features.

The two companies said the deal would cover original stories and adapted content. P12 produced The Great Alaskan Race, which Presley directed and starred in, set in 1925 and telling the tale of a group of brave mushers who travelled 700 miles to save the small children of an Alaskan town. The producer says it is giving a percentage of distribution fees from the film to five different non-profit organizations.

P12 is now in post on Presley’s second feature, The Orphan Train, set in a post-Civil War time, and is developing a slate of further socially conscious movies.

BondIt’s credits include backing Roland Emmerich’s Midway and Roadside Attraction’s The Peanut Butter Falcon.

Based on the same real-life story that inspired the 1995 animated feature “Balto” and Disney’s forthcoming “Togo”, “The Great Alaskan Race” promises at the very least to be a satisfying movie for dog lovers. What else could one expect, as its poster consists of a husky’s face in giant closeup? Unfortunately, it turns out that very least is still too much to ask for from this handsome but hokey drama, which barely seems to notice its canine players amid a focus on one-dimensional humans.

Chief among them is writer-director-producer-star Brian Presley (best known for TV soap “Port Charles”), playing the man who successfully delivered serum to Nome with his dog team during a 1925 diphtheria epidemic — a near-miraculous run still commemorated annually by the Iditarod Trail competition. That triumph over extremely adverse conditions should make for an exciting physical adventure.

AMC Theatres is launching a new program, AMC Artisan Films, as a programming-marketing effort to put a spotlight on character and narrative driven movies as an alternative to blockbusters.

“Because AMC is the industry’s top choice for blockbuster movies, many consumers don’t realize that we play more elevated and celebrated films than anyone else in North America,” said Elizabeth Frank, executive vice president of worldwide programming. “With the launch of AMC Artisan Films, we aim to expose more movie-goers to specialized films and increase their theatrical success.”

Frank said AMC is seeking earlier runs in platform releases while holding films longer in the theater to give audiences time to learn about them from other customers.

Actor Brian Presley has denied claims by model Melissa Stetten that he drank beer and flirted with her on a flight. Brian Presley's Freedom Films was able to secure a P & A arrangement, just prior to the start of Cannes, in a deal that shares the financial burden between Freedom and Fred Malmburg's Paradox Entertainment. A good thing, since VFX work has already begun on the ambitious project, an adaptation of a non-fiction book by Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent, David Zucchino. "Thunder Run - The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad" tells of the capture of the Iraqi capital by American forces at the onset of the Iraq War in April of 2003. Zucchino's novel was adapted by Academy Award-winner Robert Port (Twin Towers) and Black Hawk Down screenwriter, Ken Nolan. Hit the jump for more on Thunder Run. If we could go back and change one aspect of our past that would change everything about our future, how many of us would take that chance? **Updated with official press release** The cult classic Silent Night, Deadly Night is officially being remade, with a genre icon taking on the lead role.Variety reports that filming begins next month, with Steven C. Miller (The Aggression Scale) directing.

Titled Silent Night, the film stars Malcolm McDowell and “tells the story of a local police department’s search for the killer Santa Claus terrorizing their remote Midwestern town on Christmas Eve. McDowell will play Sheriff Cooper, a small-town hero ready for some big-time action.”

Anchor Bay has acquired North American distribution rights and plans to release Silent Night in time for the holiday season later this year. If you took Friday Night Lights and mashed it up with Mr. Destiny, you’d probably end up with something that looks a lot like Touchback.

It’s been awhile since we’ve had one of those films that shoots someone into the past so he (or she) can fix mistakes and improve their present lot in life, so the timing is actually pretty good for a movie that follows that plot line. Everything old is new again, right?

In Touchback, a financially-strapped family man living in a small town suddenly finds himself back in the past. More precisely, he finds himself at a point in time where he can change things and avoid the leg-cracking injury that flushed his football dreams down the toilet. Here’s the rub – while his adult life might not be filled with fancy cars and over-flowing bank accounts, he has a wife and children that love him.
