On this day in 1986, a gang of sassy teens snuck into the Park Plaza Mall for a night of partying, hook-ups, and maybe a little light property damage. Unfortunately for them, the mall’s new security system wasn’t just state-of-the-art, it was armed, dangerous, and very eager to enforce after-hours rules with deadly precision.
Welcome to Chopping Mall, the gloriously schlocky sci-fi slasher that gave us killer robots, exploding heads, and the absolute blueprint for shopping mall carnage in horror cinema.
Directed by Jim Wynorski and produced by Roger Corman’s wife Julie Corman, Chopping Mall took a simple premise – teens locked in a mall with killer security droids – and ran full-tilt into cult-movie gold. With laser-eyed ‘Protectors’ going haywire thanks to a freak lightning storm, the film delivers a perfect cocktail of ‘80s neon, gore, and robot death-ray madness.

After working their magic to bring Trick or Treat to 4K Ultra HD, Red Shirt Pictures and Synapse Films have announced six upcoming titles in the works.
The releases include: Fright Night Part II, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, Prom Night III: The Last Kiss, Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil, 976-Evil II, and Angel of H.E.A.T.
“There are no release dates for any of these titles at this time,” Synapse writes, noting that Fright Night Part II will not be out in 2025.
“We can’t even say ‘Still in production. No release date.’ because several of them have not started production yet! Just as it was with Trick or Treat, Red Shirt Pictures will be overseeing the production of each release, while Synapse will oversee the audio/video and distribution of each title, all of which will be in production throughout 2025 and into 2026.”

The Dcu’s horror-inspired movie Swamp Thing is in its early stages of development at DC Studios. Created in 1971 for DC Comics’ House of Secrets #92, the human-turned-monster Swamp Thing has become a staple of DC’s horror-inspired gallery of characters. There are various human characters who have transformed into Swamp Thing - all connected to the elemental force called “the Green” - but the most famous one is the scientist Alex Holland, who quite literally becomes one with nature when he submerges himself in the Louisiana swamplands after an explosion left him on the brink of death.
Despite not being as famous as most DC characters who have starred in movies and TV shows, Swamp Thing has already been played by various live-action actors, starting with 1982's Swamp Thing, directed by A Nightmare on Elm Street director Wes Craven. Swamp Thing's 1982 film adaptation was received positively enough to spawn a sequel,...

DinoGator is one of those movies I never thought I’d actually get to see, at least not this side of a bootleg copy. Originally shot in 2016 under the more accurate title CobraGator, it came close to release in 2018, only to disappear into the murky depths of the swamp of lost films. Not even the involvement of the legendary Roger Corman, who served as executive producer, could convince distributors to lure it out, until now. So, was it worth the wait? Well, that really depends on how much you enjoy the taste of cheese.
The story kicks off with a trio of doomed characters venturing into a cave. One of them plays a recorder like a snake charmer’s flute. But instead of charming any creatures,...

Quick Links What Was The Beastmaster About? How Does Kraven the Hunter Relate to The Beastmaster?
The following contains spoilers for Kraven the Hunter, now playing in theaters.
With J.C. Chandor's Kraven the Hunter and other Sony Marvel movies, many expect homages to the Spider-Man films, or the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. However, Kraven the Hunter draws energy from another surprising franchise:The Beastmaster, which began in the 1980s.
This medieval-mystical fantasy story didn't do big numbers at the box office, nor did it win over critics. But as the decades passed, the franchise developed a cult following. Coincidentally, Aaron Johnson-Taylor's Kraven has abilities very similar to the protagonist from that property. Not to mention, his mission and overall ethos have parallels to what The Beastmaster presented.

The "Velociraptor Horror" bar is pretty low outside Universal’s Jurassic franchise. All Mike Hermosa's The Invisible Raptor had to outperform are titles like Area 407, Jim Wynorski's Raptor, or The VelociPastor. On that scale, The Invisible Raptor proves more competent than other prehysterical B-movies that you might find on the Syfy channel after midnight. It's selling what's on the tin — a goofy creature feature with an unseen raptor and more Jurassic Park references than Comic Con. If that sounds like brainless fun, you're (mostly) in luck!
Mike Capes stars as Dr. Grant Walker (red bandana and all), a disgraced paleontologist who now works for a dinosaur amusement park. He's down on his luck, but Dr. Walker jumps into action when an invisible velociraptor escapes its top-secret facility cage. With the help of DinoWorld's redneck security guard Deniel 'Denny' Denielson (David Shackelford) and his former lover Amber (Caitlin McHugh), Dr.

When it comes to cheesy horror movies, there was no decade better than the 1980s. The best films from this era kicked things into absolute hyperdrive as excessive gore, outrageous special effects, and campy, over-the-top performances became the norm. This was a period when filmmakers were experimenting with new types of horror movies as directors paid tribute to classics of the past with incredible homages, carved out new styles that better represented the social and political anxieties of that time, and pushed audiences out of their comfort zone with some truly terrifying films.
The cheesiest horrors of the 1980s included scary slashers that saw serial killers relentlessly pursue their victims, hilarious comedy horrors that featured punk rock brain-eating zombies, or even alien clowns invading Earth. While more serious horrors can make for a terrifying film-viewing experience, when gathered together with a group of friends, a cheesy 1980s horror will usually be the best pick.

Jim Wynorski is a legend in the B-movie world, having racked up over 100 directing credits over the course of his 40+ years of working in the entertainment industry. Among those credits are Chopping Mall, Deathstalker II, The Return of Swamp Thing, Sorority House Massacre II, Hard to Die, Ghoulies IV, Demolition High, Piranhaconda, Sharkansas Women’s Prison Massacre, Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl, and Murderbot – so it’s clear to see why Wynorski was the subject of a documentary back in 2009. The documentary is called Popatopolis, and the folks at Terror Vision have just brought it to Blu-ray for the first time ever! Copies can be ordered at This Link.
Directed by Clay Westervelt, Popatopolis has the following synopsis: Jim Wynorski was the first to cast Traci Lords in mainstream cinema. He directed Heather Locklear in The Return of Swamp Thing. He discovered Jennifer Love Hewitt. Now, the man behind The Bare Wench Project...

As far as I’m concerned, director Jim Wynorski’s 1986 film Chopping Mall (watch it Here) ranks up there as one of the most entertaining horror movies of the ’80s, which is the decade that brought a lot of my favorite horror movies into the world. It’s also a movie that doesn’t seem to get referenced often enough, and doesn’t get as much respect as it deserves – even if James Wan wants to remake it and Shout Factory TV aired it for 24 hours straight on Black Friday. So I’m glad to see that Chopping Mall is getting some love from the folks at Encyclopocalypse Publications, who have announced that they’re teaming up with Shout Factory and author Brian G. Berry for a Chopping Mall novelization!

DC's upcoming movie, Swamp Thing, will break a 35-year trend for DC movies when the adaptation is released. The last Swamp Thing movie was released in 1989, though the character did feature in his own live-action series more recently. The unique character of Swamp Thing can combat superhero fatigue and can be used to explore the horror genre effectively.
The Dcu's release slate features an upcoming movie that is poised to break a 35-year DC movie trend in Swamp Thing. With filming for the Dcu's first release, Superman, underway, the franchise reboot is poised to reignite enthusiasm for DC's cinematic offerings. James Gunn being at the helm is a positive sign for the franchise, as the comic-loving filmmaker has a proven track record of delivering some of the highest-quality superhero movies in recent memory, including the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and one of the Dceu's most critically acclaimed movies, The Suicide Squad.

Chopping Mall is a cult slasher featuring Barbara Crampton that kicks off when a bad thunderstorm causes a direct lightning strike, putting security robots on the fritz and making them a deadly problem for the group of eight mall employees who have decided to stay after hours to party and have sex.

Burr helmed New Line’s “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain in the 1990 installment. David McCallum, the man who brought the sexy to NBC's swinging 1960s superspy series "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." and enjoyed an unexpected career resurgence via CBS' long-running procedural "NCIS," has, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, passed away of natural causes at the age of 90.
Although his character Illya Kuryakin was a Russian agent in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," the Scottish McCallum imbued the show with a British Mod-era cool that mashed up Sean Connery's finely tailored James Bond with the youthful insouciance of The Beatles. This wasn't by design. "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." was conceived as a vehicle for Robert Vaughn, but it's impossible to imagine the show gaining global traction with his cucumber-cool (occasionally frigid) American agent Napoleon Solo. To be sure, Vaughn had "it." He got the best character arc in John Sturges' "The Magnificent Seven," and died a hero's death.

Three horror classics have just landed on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox streaming service, which already is celebrating a massive August that kicked off with the Ghostbusters-inspired Ghastly Brothers.
Richard Attenborough’s Magic (1978) starring Anthony Hopkins and a psychotic ventriloquist dummy is the first of three movies added to Screambox, courtesy of Shout! Factory.
“Written by William Goldman, adapted from the novel he also wrote, Magic revolves around a ventriloquist seeking to renew a relationship with his former high school sweetheart,” Meagan Navarro previously wrote about the classic. “The only problem is that his dummy is the jealous type. That ventriloquist, Corky, is played by Anthony Hopkins. Unlike most killer doll horror movies, Magic favors the psychological, and Hopkins brings intensity to this twisted love story.”
She notes that this movie served as an inspiration for Don Mancini’s original Child’s Play screenplay and is currently celebrating its 45th anniversary!

Yes, George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead seems to be available on nearly every streaming service there is, and that’s because the movie is in the public domain due to the copyright notice accidentally being left off the film print. The new 'Swamp Thing' film will be a "Gothic horror movie" inspired by 'Frankenstein', according to director James Mangold. The 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' filmmaker is set to helm the upcoming movie which is part of the new DC Universe and he wants to explore what it means to be a man-turned-monster and Mary Shelley's 1818 novel and the subsequent film versions of 'Frankenstein' will be an influence.Speaking to Variety, Mangold spilled: "While I’m sure DC views ‘Swamp Thing’ as a franchise, I would be viewing it as a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster.“I am interested in making something that works from beginning to end — to curtain. Otherwise, I’m working on the world’s most expensive television show."I've been toying for years with the idea of making a kind of 'Frankenstein' movie.

With a tip of the hat to Agatha Christie and a nod toward “Twelve Angry Men,” writer-director Ted Geoghegan (“Mohawk”) skillfully sustains suspense and showcases a strong cast in “Brooklyn 45,” a supernatural-themed chamber drama about a small group of World War II vets entangled in a séance where visits from the restless departed are hardly the worst threat to participants. Set for a June 9 premiere on the Shudder streaming service after a sprint on the festival circuit, the film impresses as a well-crafted period piece with some pointed observations about paranoia and xenophobia that feel, discomfortingly, as relevant as recent news reports about over-reactions by stand-your-ground shooters.
It’s a cold December evening in 1945 when Lt. Col. Clive “Hock” Hockstatter (Larry Fessenden) summons to his Park Slope, Brooklyn brownstone four friends whose lives, like his, have been drastically affected by their recent wartime experiences: Marla Sheridan (Anne Ramsay), a...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.
Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.
Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

The original Swamp Thing is from 1982; it took seven years to get a sequel, a change of director, and a massive shift in tone. If the first one was very 1980s, this one is 1980s to the max! The sequel to Swamp Thing takes the tongue-in-cheek route all the way to the bank. Or at least all the way to the end credits. For a film that cost $3 million, making less than $300,000 at the box office was abysmal. However, looking back at the film now, it’s a fun ride. Is The Return of Swamp Thing (watch it Here) a perfect film? Far from that. Is it a good movie? Debatable. Is it cheesy? 4 brie cheeses out of 5. How much...

Back in 1986, director Jim Wynorski brought us the cult classic Chopping Mall (watch it Here, check out our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? episode on the film Here), which was about the robots that have been tasked with serving as the security guards in a shopping mall going on a killing spree. The original title for that movie was Killbots, and a while back it was announced that Wynorski was going to be directing a new movie called Killbots for Full Moon. It would have nothing to do with Chopping Mall, it was just going to be using that discarded original title. Well, the title plans changed along the way. The Wynorski / Full Moon project is now called Murderbot – and you can watch the trailer in the embed above!

The 1980s were full of robots, lasers, odd fashion choices, and teen films, including the now cult film Chopping Mall (watch it Here). In this 1986 sci-fi film, a group of teenage friends and mall workers end up stuck in the Mall after closing hours when a trio of security robots are deployed for the first time.
In the 80s, anything futuristic or with robots seemed to get greenlit with budgets of varying levels and quality of varying degrees. Some of these films took themselves very seriously, too seriously even. However, Chopping Mall was one of those films with the perfect mixture of low budget, the right talent in front of and behind the cameras, and the right level of seriousness to its content and how it was approached. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it doesn’t go full-on goofy, either. There is a “just right” aspect...

It’s supposed to be a nostalgic, supportive night. On December 27, 1945, five military veterans and friends from childhood gather inside a Brooklyn brownstone to reminisce about old times, celebrate the end of World War II, and comfort a grieving host whose wife has recently passed. But what starts with sentimental banter and a strong whiskey buzz quickly spirals into an unexpected séance that conjures the paranormal, sparks some paranoia, and builds to a possession that seems hell-bent on staining the wood-paneled parlor with as much blood as possible.
That’s the fun, gory, alarming premise behind Brooklyn 45, Ted Geoghegan’s third feature film that asks a lot of heavy questions in-between its abrupt moments of splatter. When does the war really end? Who decides when it’s over? How do you determine ethics in the midst of battle? Within the useful limitations of a one-night, one-location get-together, Geoghegan mostly makes good on his script,...

It turns out that a cryptic Twitter post can mean a lot more than just reminiscing about your favorite superhero. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that James Mangold is in negotiations to direct the recently-announced "Swamp Thing" film for DC Studios. While Mangold was not mentioned during the private press event revealing the new DC Universe movie and TV show slate, it appears he will be among the first of many directors to bring these projects to the screen.
"Swamp Thing" itself is expected to be the darkest movie of DC Studios' theatrical fare, with co-ceo Peter Safran teasing it as a look into the character's horrifying origins. The most common iteration of the character is biologist Alec Holland, who became the creature after a botched heist in his Louisiana laboratory. It is likely that Holland will be the film's focus, although other iterations of the character, such as Levi Kamei,...

The Snyderverse is dead. The Arrowverse is concluding. James Gunn and Peter Safran have seized the reins of the DC Universe, and on Monday they revealed their plan to bring order to a film-and-television brand that was haphazardly developed and, particularly on the film side, ineptly run. It is ambitious. It is still fairly sketchy on details. But the titles and characters they've elected to feature in the early going are, to this 49-year-old comic book fan's mind, indicative of grand, mythic thinking -- the creation of a new era of Gods and Monsters.
Given Gunn's bullishness on the epic, big-hearted quality of "The Flash" -- which he inherited from the previous regime and, it appears, could be used to spinoff/set-up his phase of TV and movie projects -- the outgoing steward of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise seems eager to enforce a benevolent worldview via his newly attained perch.

Killer machines are a narrative trope about as old as machinery itself, but there’s something especially creepy about metallic killers when they’re roughly human-shaped. And as we’ve seen with the success of Blumhouse’s insanely popular M3GAN, the uncanny valley can still go a long way when it comes to attracting modern audiences.
With that in mind, we’ve decided to celebrate the home release of M3GAN with a list of six other memorable killer androids in horror movies. After all, these man-made movie monsters evolved alongside Hollywood’s understanding of technology, so we’ve seen some pretty interesting homicidal automatons over the years.
Obviously, this list is based on personal opinion, but we’ll still be following a couple of rules. First of all, we’ll be excluding cyborgs from the list, as their human bits make them a completely different kind of character. Second, we...

James Wan has produced and/or directed some of the most popular horror films to be released in the last twenty years. His résumé includes Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, and the franchises each one of those spawned. And in his daydreams, he imagines adding remakes of the 1980s classics Chopping Mall (watch it Here) and Night of the Creeps (watch that Here) to the list as well.
Speaking with SlashFilm, it came up that Wan likes movies that could be termed “frightful fun”, much like his recent, totally insane directorial effort Malignant and the upcoming sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review), which he produced. Wan said, “I have many horror films that I think that are just fun that I love, and I’m pretty sure the horror community shares them with me. I love movies like Chopping Mall. M3GAN producer James Wan says he wants to remake Chopping Mall and Night of the Creeps. Horror fans are currently getting ready for some new killer doll action, as the highly-touted M3GAN gets ready to creep out movie theaters. Penned by Malignant co-writer Akela Cooper, the movie stars Alison Williams as a roboticist who crafts an AI-powered doll to act as a companion for her orphaned niece. Given that M3GAN is a Blumhouse film co-produced by Wan, it’s no surprise that the movie’s titular robot doll quickly demonstrates a capacity for murder.
Killer robots/dolls like M3GAN have of course been a staple of horror movies for a very long time. Unsurprisingly, M3GAN producer Wan is a fan of one particular rampaging robots gem from the 1980s: the bad-movie cult classic Chopping Mall. Jim Wynorski's 1986 horror cheapie "Chopping Mall" is a supremely silly film, better for snickers and guffaws than for scares or ideas. The premise is novel enough: a shopping mall has just installed a new line of ultra-advanced security robots that will patrol the mall at night looking for ruffians or thieves. Predictably, the robots go haywire and respond to any and all human beings with lethal force. They electrocute the janitor and begin chasing a group of mall employees who were having a sex party inside the furniture store. The film features such glorious cult luminaries as Barbara Crampton, Dick Miller, and Gerrit Graham. One can also take the supreme delight provided by legitimate icons Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov; when they appear on screen in any film, you know you're in for a treat.
Of course, once the robots begin firing lasers at fleeing, half-naked women, a lot...
