It was announced at the start of April thatDavid Fincher had been tapped to direct a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and now the film may have just got a major unexpected update. Deadline recently sat down for an interview with Michael B. Jordan for his new movie, Sinners, and buried in the report was the claim that the Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood sequel will reportedly be titled The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth. This news lines up with the initial report that the sequel will be focused on Brad Pitt’s character, Cliff Booth, and would likely only feature Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton in a small role, if at all. The sequel is in the works at Netflix and aims to begin filming this summer in California.

Charred Oscar Destroyed in L.A. Wildfires Turns Up at Chateau Marmont, Months After Fake Viral Photo
In the wake of January’s catastrophic Palisades Fire, an image featuring a charred Academy Award sitting atop a pile of rubble went viral and became a symbol of the devastation, not only for the area but for its impact on Hollywood professionals. Many industry insiders reposted the image complete with emotional captions including veteran actress Isabella Rossellini, who had just been nominated for an Oscar for Conclave. The image, however, turned out to be fake and AI generated.
Fast-forward to Wednesday when a real charred Oscar turned up at Chateau Marmont, where it was pictured on the famed hotel terrace during a starry event hosted by Anna Wintour and Vogue to announce the details for the forthcoming Vogue World: Hollywood. It belongs to four-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who lost her home in the Palisades Fire as she confirmed during a poignant moment at the podium alongside fellow costume...

Anna Wintour doesn’t come to Los Angeles often, so when she touches down, it usually means there’s important fashion business on the horizon.
That proved to be the case Wednesday when the global editorial director of Vogue and chief content officer at Condé Nast assumed position at a podium situated on the Chateau Marmont terrace just before 11 a.m. in front of the city’s fashion elite. But a few faces in the crowd — specifically Governor Gavin Newsom, mogul Casey Wasserman and costume designers Arianne Phillips, Colleen Atwood and Ruth E. Carter — signaled that the official business would stretch beyond fashion.
“We are thrilled to be here in Los Angeles, a city we love, that we admire, which gives us so much and has been constantly in our thoughts since the winter. This is a moment when coming to Los Angeles, joining in the effort to rebuild and...

Anna Wintour announced today that the fourth annual Vogue World will take place in Hollywood on October 26 at the Paramount Pictures Studio Lot. Celebrating the “conversation between film and fashion,” 100% of the ticket proceeds will go to the Entertainment Community fund, with a focus on supporting costuming professionals impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires.
“Vogue World: Hollywood will be a one-night-only show with a huge cast of models and actors, dancers, musicians and surprises, and it will set great film costumes next to brilliant fashion collections,” said Wintour. “By mixing fashion with the arts and culture in the center of a city, and by raising funds for a cause, Vogue World has become a runway show-as-rallying cry, a way to fix the attention of a huge global audience, to bring awareness, and sound an unmistakable note of positivity, creativity, and hope.”

“Wicked’s” Paul Tazewell has made Oscars history by becoming the first Black man to win for best costume design.
Tazewell, a previous nominee for “West Side Story,” already has an Emmy award (“The Wiz Live”) and Tony award (“Hamilton”) under his belt. He triumphed over fellow costume designers: Arianne Phillips (“A Complete Unknown”), Linda Muir (“Nosferatu”), Lisy Christl (“Conclave”) and Janty Yates and David Crossman (“Gladiator II”).
Tazewell has swept the season scooping up the BAFTA, Critics Choice and Costume Designers Guild awards along the way. He was also named one of Variety’s 10 artisans to watch in costume design, and was honored with the Variety Artisan Award in costume design at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.
He is the second Black person to win in that category overall – Ruth E. Carter made Oscar history when she won for her work on “Black Panther.” She won a few years...

The bumpy road to Oscar glory will reach its end Sunday night at the 97th Academy Awards, closing out one of the most unpredictable awards seasons in years. Ups and downs, twists and turns, mudslinging, mea culpas, tears both happy and sad — we’ve seen it all in recent weeks as the race kept us guessing what new upheaval might come next.
And that includes who wins tonight. “Emilia Pérez” might have the most nominations (13), but Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical lost its frontrunner status pretty much the moment star Karla Sofía-Gascón’s history of bigoted tweets resurfaced. In stepped “Anora,” which won top prizes with both the PGA and DGA and seemed ready to sail to a Best Picture victory…until “Conclave” swept in and showed us that the race was much tighter than we’d thought.

With final Oscar balloting closed on February 18, we’re continuing with our eighth annual series of interviews with Academy voters from different branches for their unfiltered takes on what got picked, overlooked, and overvalued in the 2025 award season. Voter’s picks in bold. Interview edited for brevity.
Best Picture
I voted for “Emelia Pérez,” the most interesting, innovative, creative picture of the year. I went to a screening early on, so I didn’t have expectations, except that I liked [Jacques Audiard’s] other films. I love the music. I’m sad about all the stuff about Karla Sofía [Gascón]. Am I not going to look at a Picasso painting ever again? He was a shit. Am I not going to watch a Woody Allen film? It’s a slippery slope when you start with the personality of the people in the movie. Who’s perfect? It has to be about...

Receiving a single Oscar nomination would be an incredible personal achievement. But the four nominations A Complete Unknown costume designer Arianne Phillips has earned over her career extend “beyond my wildest 8-year-old dreams,” she tells Gold Derby in the final days of this year’s awards campaign.
Her bid this year for Best Costume Design is a full-circle moment. Phillips received her first nomination for James Mangold’s Walk the Line, a character-driven musical biography about Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. Now, she’s back in competition at the Oscars for the Bob Dylan film A Complete Unknown, another Magnold feature about a legendary musician. To further add to the symmetry, Johnny Cash is a supporting character.
“This nomination resonates in a way that is similar to probably my first nomination,” Phillips says. “Plus, it was a year of great costumed movies – very vivid costume movies, big costume movies.

Props from “A Complete Unknown” will go on display at the Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie Centers in Tulsa, Okla., as part of a new exhibit, “Stepping Into the Unknown,” opening on Feb. 28. It’s the first exhibit to run concurrently at both centers.
The exhibit, presented in partnership with Searchlight Pictures, will “illuminate the deep bond between the two hugely influential American songwriters.” One of the first scenes in the Timothée Chalamet biopic sees Dylan visiting Guthrie (Scoot McNairy) in the hospital immediately upon his arrival in New York City.
Among the props from the James Mangold-directed film are Guthrie’s harmonica; Dylan’s letter to Guthrie; Johnny Cash’s letters to Dylan; “Blowin’ in the Wind” lyrics handwritten on a cocktail napkin; and a handful of fabricated album covers featuring the actors (like Chalamet and Elle Fanning’s rendition of “Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”).

‘Girl Interrupted’ to ‘Walk the Line,’ Arianne Phillips Highlights Her Five Favorite Costume Moments
Costume designer Arianne Phillips is 0-3 for Oscar wins to nominations. But her nod this year for James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” may be the film that turns her luck around.
Phillips’ talents have made her Tom Ford’s go-to designer (“A Single Man” and “Nocturnal Animals”), as well as Mangold’s, having collaborated with him on “Girl, Interrupted,” “Identity,” “Walk the Line” and “3:10 to Yuma.” She’s styled Courtney Love, Madonna and Lenny Kravitz to name a few, and her resume includes print, fashion and editorial work.
She was well on her way as a costume designer when she started working closely with Madonna, but was told, “You need to either be a stylist or a costume designer; you need to do rock and roll or fashion,” she says. “I chose to keep going,” Phillips says, by not picking one over the other. Having partnered with such A-list musicians as Madonna for decades, costume designer and self-described visual artist Arianne Phillips is no stranger to the music world. Her latest work on James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, marks Phillips’ fourth Academy Award nomination for best costume design and her sixth collab with Mangold. The two first teamed up for Girl, Interrupted in 1999, while their work on Walk the Line, which focused on Johnny Cash’s life and career, in 2005 is revisited through the Cash-Dylan friendship depicted in A Complete Unknown. For the film, which landed eight Oscar nominations, Phillips and her bicoastal team of 42 created approximately 8,000 costumes, including 67 wardrobe changes for Timothée Chalamet in the starring role.
“So much happens in the first four years of Bob’s career that it was really thrilling, as a costume designer, to guide the audience through his dramatic style evolution,” Phillips tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The Best Costume Design nominees are “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Gladiator II,” “Nosferatu,” and “Wicked,” which is the favorite. However, “A Complete Unknown” the surprise entry, could be a dark horse.
Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” tells the origin story of Elphaba/the Wicked Witch (Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda/Glinda the Good Witch (Oscar-nominated Ariana Grande). Costume designer Paul Tazewell’s approach to Elphaba and Glinda’s costumes was to create intentional differences and highlight the juxtaposition of dark and light, textured versus refined, using a connection with nature for Elphaba and a floating sensibility for Galinda.

“Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” emerged January 23 as the two Oscar craft juggernauts, scoring seven nominations apiece and setting up a battle of the musicals at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. This matches the seven craft nominations of last year’s eventual Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer.”
Jacques Audiard’s operatic thriller “Emilia Pérez” grabbed cinematography (Paul Guillaume), makeup and hairstyling, editing (Juliette Welfling), score (Clément Ducol and Camille), sound, and two original songs (“El Mal” by Clément Ducol and Camille and Audiard and “Mi Camino” by Camille and Ducol).
Jon M. Chu’s populist blockbuster “Wicked” captured costume design (Paul Tazewell), production design, makeup and hairstyling, editing (Myron Kerstein), sound, score (John Powell and Stephen Schwartz), and VFX.

“I’m in a state of shock. I’m just thrilled. I’m thrilled for the acknowledgment for all the hard work that my incredible crew did with me on this journey,” Arianne Phillips, costume designer for A Complete Unknown costume designer and newly minted Oscar nominee, tells Gold Derby. “I’m thrilled for Jim Mangold, five years in the making on this film with lots of delays. It’s some good news and some very sad times here in L.A. And I am just happy to be able to share it with my community, my friends, my family, and especially my crew and my cohorts from A Complete Unknown.”

Anora was nominated in six categories, and The Substance and Dune: Part Two earned five nominations.

With a total of eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, A Complete Unknown has taken its place as a major Academy frontrunner —. One of those eight nominations was for Monica Barbaro’s turn as Joan Baez.
Barbaro told Deadline of her shock and surprise shortly after the announcement Thursday morning. “This was really unexpected,” she said. “I was trying not to pay attention to it because there are so many phenomenal actors performances this year and I’ve just been like, I’m not going to overthink it. I’m not going to expect any of it.”
However, for Barbaro it was afternoon as she is currently in London shooting interiors for Crime 101, Bart Layton’s upcoming heist movie, also starring Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan and Mark Ruffalo. The film is set in LA and exteriors were shot there.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards (Oscars), set to honour the outstanding films of 2024. Originally delayed due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the announcement was made on January 23, from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist’ leads the pack with multiple nominations, lauded for its ambitious narrative chronicling the life of an immigrant architect in mid-20th-century America.
The Best Actress category has drawn significant attention, with Demi Moore (The Substance) and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez) leading the conversation. One of the most open-wide races in years is coming into focus. “Emilia Pérez” led all nominees for the 97th Academy Awards with 13, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Its haul sets a new record for a film not in English. “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” tied for second place with 10 each, both also receiving nods for picture. Brady Corbet was also nominated for directing and Adrien Brody scored a lead actor nom, his first since winning for “The Piano” in 2003.
More major milestones: “Conclave” supporting actress Isabella Rossellini earned her first nomination, 46 years after her mother Ingrid Bergman’s final nom. Demi Moore also earned her first nomination, for her lead performance in Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror film “The Substance.” Fargeat became the ninth woman to ever be nominated for directing, following her fellow Frenchwoman Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”) last year. Monica Barbaro, who portrays Joan Baez in James Mangold’s powerful awards-season contender A Complete Unknown, about how Bob Dylan — as played by Timothée Chalamet — put his colossal stamp on our rock ‘n’ roll culture, hails costume designer Arianne Phillips as a “detective” for her ability to track down the source of the thousands of costumes featured in the movie.
Phillips agrees with Barbaro’s moniker. “Absolutely, that’s the job. I say costume designers are people detectives,” she tells me as we walk around the display of costumes and sets from the film on the ground floor of Arizona State University’s Los Angeles campus of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.
The exhibition was assembled by the museum’s staff along with Phillips, A Complete Unknown’s production designer François Audouy, producer Fred Berger, the film’s crafts departments, Searchlight Pictures and Shelter PR.

Now that awards season is close, everyone is invested in guessing and figuring out which movies and creatives will be nominated in 2025. While the buzz is always the greatest around the big seven categories of director, movie, screenplay, lead, and supporting actors and actresses, the costume design category always presents an interesting opportunity for discussions and to revisit the best movie costumes of the year gone by. 2023's Barbie movie had amazing costumes for Ryan Gosling's Ken, and now it's time to figure out what is the 2024 equivalent.
The best Halloween costumes of 2024 are a good place to start for highlights of the most culturally influential costume moments of the year. Timothée Chalamet and his “A Complete Unknown” costar Elle Fanning had a bit of fun while being interviewed by reporter Tracy E. Gilchrist this week. Gilchrist, who reports for Out and was interviewing the pair for The Advocate, went viral after she told “Wicked” costars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo she was “holding space” for the lyrics of one of the film’s songs, and Grande and Eviro awkwardly held one another’s fingers while responding.
Chalamet and Fanning wasted no time recreating the meme. Gilchrist told Out, “This viral moment has been the wildest ride of my life, filled with so much laughter and joy. But this moment with Timothée and Elle was hilariously surreal.”

François Audouy and Arianne Phillips, the production designer and costume designer of “A Complete Unknown,” both benefited from the pandemic- and strike-related delays that gave them more time to prep for James Mangold’s look at the first few years of Bob Dylan’s career in New York City. Not only did Mangold keep rewriting and improving the script, but the production design and costume teams had more time to figure out how to re-create the time, place and feel of a world that hasn’t existed for 60 years — though not through slavish imitation.
“I went into production after four years of marinating and learning about Bob,” Phillips said. “We’re not making a documentary, but we’re trying to excavate the essence of Dylan. A Complete Unknown is set in New York in the year 1961, when a young Bob Dylan starts to make his way onto the music scene. The film transports viewers back in time through detailed sets, hair and makeup, and of course, costuming. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan.
Costume designer Arianne Phillips, who has worked with director James Mangold multiple times, creates the costumes for A Complete Unknown as well. Interestingly enough, she also worked on the musical biopic Walk the Line, meaning she once again styled for an actor portraying Johnny Cash. A Complete Unknown comes to theaters on December 25.

When making a biopic about a famous artist and musician, you would think the research would come easy — until the aptly named A Complete Unknown, tracking the meteoric rise of Bob Dylan – the enigmatic man with an unknowable past. Even though the film only tells of his life through a few years, culminating in the Newport Folk Festival of ’65, you’d be hard-pressed to find more than a handful of people who attended that festival with the exact same story of how everything went down.
Deadline spoke with five key craftspeople – cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, production designer François Audouy, costume designer Arianne Phillips and editors Andrew Buckland and Scott Morris – to discuss how they pieced together the life of a mysterious legend and paid homage to a revolutionary artist.

Costume designer Arianne Phillips and director James Mangold have worked together several times since the late 1990s, including on Mangold’s Oscar-winning films “Girl, Interrupted” and “Walk the Line.” But “A Complete Unknown” marks the first time in 14 years that Phillips, a three-time Oscar nominee, and Mangold have been credited together on a project. “The truth is, this was a bit of a journey getting here,” Phillips tells Gold Derby.
Set in the early 1960s, as a young Bob Dylan (played in the film by Timothee Chalamet) comes to New York and enters the nascent stages of superstardom, “A Complete Unknown” is a film Mangold has tried to mount for years. He first spoke to Phillips about the feature in 2019. But the coronavirus pandemic, Mangold’s commitments to “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and Chalamet’s role in the “Dune” franchise kept pushing the start date back on the calendar.

You don’t need to be a Bob Dylan aficionado to appreciate Timothée Chalamet’s transformation into the iconic folk singer. Even if your knowledge of Dylan’s career is limited to a few famous tracks or a vague recollection of his controversial shift to electric guitar, Chalamet’s performance in “A Complete Unknown” is undeniably a career best. He’s emerging as a leading contender for his first Academy Award — a compelling performance that may prove difficult for voters to ignore.
On Wednesday night in Los Angeles, Searchlight Pictures hosted two packed screenings of “A Complete Unknown” at the Fox Lot, followed by Q&a sessions featuring director and co-writer James Mangold, actors Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning, costume designer Arianne Phillips, and production designer François Audouy. Chalamet, currently filming Josh Safdie’s new period project “Marty Supreme,” was notably absent, but his presence wasn’t needed to dominate the conversation.

You wouldn’t be making a movie about the chaotic life of Bob Dylan without hitting a few twists and turns along the way, would you? At least that’s how co-writer/director James Mangold felt about all the walls the world threw at him as he was trying to get “A Complete Unknown” off the ground. First it was the Covid-19 pandemic, then it was the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, plus all the schedules of talent shifting as a result, but through it all, Mangold refused to relent. In fact, as he shared at the first screening of the film on Wednesday, November 20 on the Fox lot in Los Angeles, were it not for these events, the film might not hold the magic that it does in capturing a time, place, and enigma of a man.

Fair warning: your mileage may vary, depending on your relationship to the music of Bob Dylan. James Mangold’s long-gestating “A Complete Unknown” leans heavily on Dylan’s early music and has the power of an origin myth as it lets us rediscover his extraordinary ’60s songbook.
Star Timothée Chalamet is sexily convincing as the prolific singer-songwriter, without trying to be ingratiating — worth remembering: he did not treat the women in his life well. At one point, he wakes up the sleeping Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) as he composes on his guitar in her hotel room, and seems surprised when she orders him to “Get out!”
Chalamet maintains Dylan’s inexpressive mystery, while fully expressing himself in the songs. The actor carried his guitar around on other films for five years while he practiced his finger-picking, Mangold said at the post-screening Q&a at Los Angeles’ packed Zanuck Theater on Wednesday night.

At one point, he wakes up the sleeping Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) as he composes on his guitar in her hotel room, and seems surprised when she orders him to “Get out!”

Like a rolling stone, James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” has officially entered the Oscar race. Last night at the Zanuck Theater on the Fox Lot in Los Angeles, the film screened for the first time in front of an audience with Mangold, as well as stars Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro, costume designer Arianne Phillips, and production designer François Audouy all in attendance.
Throughout the screening, the crowd was enlivened by Mangold and team’s carefully crafted recreation of 1960s Greenwich Village, as well as the Newport Folk Festival held in Newport, Rhode Island. Following the screening, critics were quick to share their admiration via social media, highlighting Timothée Chalamet’s performance as Dylan, both acting and singing, as a major standout in this year’s awards race.

While many “Deadpool & Wolverine” quips have become fan favorites, like Gambit’s “I’m boutta’ make a name for myself here,” star and screenwriter Ryan Reynolds has a more sentimental take on which lines were his favorite to write.
“The thing I’m probably most proud of was the Wolverine speech in the van where he just tears Deadpool a new one,” said Reynolds. “To me, it’s one of the most beautiful scenes in the movie because you see what a raw, visceral, powerhouse of an actor Hugh Jackman is. But you also see the roles reversed. You see a character who is never verbose, who is a Clint Eastwood archetype, suddenly going, ‘Oh yeah, man? Well, I can talk too.'”
Reynolds was one of the 25 people honored at Hamilton’s 13th annual Behind the Camera Awards, presented by Variety, which celebrates and recognizes the work of below-the-line filmmakers.

While this year has had its fair share of surprising flops, Joker: Folie à Deux is probably one of the more surprising ones. It had the hype of Lady Gaga taking on the role of Harley Quinn and the musical twist potentially lent itself to exploring interesting territory as an R-rated sequel to a notorious comic book villain. The movie’s response would become incredibly underwhelming, and Blu-ray.com has announced that Warner Bros. is already set to release the film’s 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray release on December 17. The digital release is going to be even sooner, with a recent Variety report on the film’s box office woes revealing WB is dumping it on digital early – October 29 – in the hopes of recouping some of its $200 million investment.
Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, and Harry Lawtey. The description reads, “Joker: Folie À Deux...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2024 winner “Poor Things.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Costume Design.)
Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 Best Picture champs also won this award; the last to do so was “The Artist” in 2012.
Among the other double dippers was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,...

Arianne Phillips, the costume designer for “Joker: Folie à Deux,” has provided insights into her work bringing Lady Gaga’s character to life. In the upcoming musical, Gaga plays Harley Quinn, starting as an obsessed fan of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) before transforming into the iconic character. Phillips faced the challenge of expanding the visual world from the first “Joker” film while honoring Mark Bridges’ Oscar-nominated costume design.
Phillips collaborated closely with Gaga to develop the character’s look throughout the story. In early scenes, Lady Gaga’s character is shown as an “underdeveloped, infantilized fan girl” through outfits like scrubs with a floral top. Phillips said this showed how the character was “obsessed with the Joker like a teenage girl — she’s a fan girl in a way that stunts her emotional growth.”
As the relationship develops, the costumes become more sophisticated, featuring sophisticated dresses and aggressive outfits. The...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “Joker: Folie à Deux” now playing in theaters.
As costume designer Arianne Phillips was conceiving ideas for “Joker: Folie à Deux,” one character she got to spend considerable time on was Lady Gaga’s Lee Quinzel.
In the film, Gaga plays Lee, an inmate in Gotham City’s Arkham State Hospital. Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) catches her eye. The two instantly connect. Her eyes light up, and so do his.
“Camp Lee” was where Phillips, director Todd Phillips and Lady Gaga — who Arianne Phillips refers to as “Stefani, Gaga’s birth name — workshopped how to present Lee. Speaking with Variety, Phillips says, “It was the chicken or the egg. Do you start at the beginning where we meet Lee in Arkham, or at the end, when we see her in her most Harley-realized state?”
However, the collaboration also tapped into something deeper, Gaga...
