James Cameron is currently focused on his upcoming Avatar projects, but he’s already thinking about his next big film. This new movie will be based on Ghosts of Hiroshima, a powerful story about one man’s survival during the atomic bombings in World War II.
The film is inspired by the book Ghosts of Hiroshima, written by Charles Pellegrino. It tells the true story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who survived both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. His experience is one of the most remarkable and tragic tales in history.
The audiobook version of Pellegrino’s book just released its first teaser trailers, narrated by Martin Sheen, a three-time Emmy winner, with original music composed by Hans Zimmer. The book is set to be released on August 5, which marks the 80th anniversary of the bombings.
James Cameron recently spoke about the movie while it is still in the early stages of development.

James Cameron's Avatar movies are far from finished, but the director is already attached to an upcoming war drama — and the book it's based on is officially on sale today. Cameron has no shortage of excellent films, but his upcoming project will allow him to explore the aftermath of a real-life tragedy that completely reshaped history: the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Cameron will do this by bringing Ghosts of Hiroshima by Charles Pellegrino to the screen, and the non-fiction book is officially out as of today, August 5. Ghosts of Hiroshima gives readers insight into the world-altering historical event by detailing the accounts of survivors and using forensic archaeology to recount what happened.
Given Cameron's name recognition and the subject matter, the Ghosts of Hiroshima film is likely to be as big as Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. However,Cameron already confirmed how it will differ from the 2023 movie: it...

Arriving on the 80th anniversary of America dropping atomic bombs on Japan, Ghosts of Hiroshima by author Charles Pellegrino is a stunning work of history. The book takes a deeply reported, humanistic, even archaeological approach to one of the most devastating and horrific military actions ever taken. Aug. 6, 1945, was humanity’s Rubicon. Everything changed in the aftermath. Pellegrino does not avoid the monumental nature of the events, but he focuses on the everyday people at the epicenter. Those souls who, through miracles, unlikely coincidences, or pure dumb luck somehow survived...

James Cameron, the man who dove into the wreck of the Titanic and waged war in Pandora, now confesses he’s afraid. Not of failure. Not of scale. But of the terrifying truth at the heart of his next film, Ghosts of Hiroshima. The acclaimed director revealed in an exclusive conversation with DiscussingFilm that adapting Charles Pellegrino’s harrowing new book might be the single most daunting creative endeavor of his storied career.
This might be the most challenging film I ever make. I don’t 100% have my strategy fully in place [right now] for how I want to see it, for how I want to shield people from the horror, but still be honest.
With Ghosts of Hiroshima, Cameron steps outside the safety of fantasy and science fiction. Gone are the blue-skinned heroes and immersive worlds of Avatar. In their place: human ashes, melted shadows, and the searing screams of survivors.

Editor’s note: While up to his eyeballs in Avatar sequels, James Cameron made a deathbed promise to Tsutomu Yamaguchi (one of the survivors of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki A-bomb blast) that he will tell the story onscreen of those history-changing moments in Japan from the vantage point of the Japanese ravaged by the blasts that ended World War II.
Cameron and author Charles Pellegrino gave Deadline permission for a glimpse at a nightmare, before the book hits stores August 5.
Cameron found a way to weave in a love story that turned Titanic into at one time the biggest-grossing film of all time. There are earnest and touching characters aplenty in Pellegrino’s book, but this one plays out more like Schindler’s List than anything else. “Not since Titanic have I found a powerful, heartbreaking and inspiring real life story as found in Ghosts of Hiroshima by Charles Pellegrino.

James Cameron Shares an Update on His Long-Awaited World War II Movie: 'It's So Important Right Now'
Acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron opens up about his hotly-anticipated Ghosts of Hiroshima.
Speaking to Deadline, Cameron discussed his adaptation of Charles Pellegrino's upcoming book, Ghosts of Hiroshima, which is based largely on the life and experiences of Tsutomo Yamaguchi, who survived both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings during the Second World War.
"I don’t want to get into the politics of, should it have been dropped, should they have done it, and all the bad things Japan did to warrant it, or any of that kind of moralizing and politicizing," Cameron stated. "I just want to deal in a sense with what happened, almost as if you could somehow be there and survive and see it."
When asked why he wanted to avoid drawing any direct political lines within the film, Cameron replied, "Because I just think it’s so important right now for people to remember what these weapons do.

Back in September of 2024, /Film reported that James Cameron was starting production on a new film called "The Last Train From Hiroshima," based on the Charles R. Pellegrino book of the same name, as well as Pellegrino's forthcoming follow-up "Ghosts of Hiroshima." This announcement was startling, as Cameron has said that he would — and so far has — work exclusively on "Avatar" films for the remainder of his directorial career. "Avatar: Fire and Ash," his third "Avatar" picture, is due out in theaters on December 19, 2025, and he fully intends to make a Part 4 (currently slated for 2029).
"The Last Train From Hiroshima" is, as the title implies, an historical novel told mostly from the perspective of the real-life Tsutomu Yamaguchi, one of the only people who have survived both the nuclear bomb explosion on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and also the nuclear bomb explosion in Nagasaki on the 9th. It has been almost 30 years since James Cameron made a feature film that wasn't set in the world of Pandora, which may lead you to believe that he's lost touch with the real world. If you've seen 2022's "Avatar: The Way of Water," it should be clear that Cameron is quite aware of what's going down on our planet. It's a movie where the Marines and corporations are the bad guys, while the Indigenous beings of Pandora are unmistakably the heroes. If you came out of these two films thinking Cameron is anything but a militant environmentalist, you were not paying attention.
With the exception of the wildly entertaining, but bafflingly cruel "True Lies," it can safely be said that James Cameron is a humanist. "The Terminator," "Aliens," "The Abyss," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Titanic," and both "Avatar" movies appeal to our consciences.

Following a rather long stint on his Avatar films, James Cameron will be picking up the reins on Joe Abercrombie’s fantasy novel, The Devils.
Although it may seem like James Cameron has been working on his Avatar films and only his Avatar films for many years now, we have seen inklings here or there that the veteran filmmaker may yet be coaxed from the world of Pandora and back into other realms, imaginary or otherwise.
In autumn of last year he announced that he’d secured the rights to Charles Pellegrino’s 2015 book Last Train From Hiroshima, adding that he’d also snapped up the rights to the author’s forthcoming follow-up, Ghosts Of Hiroshima and planned to adapt the novels into an ‘“uncompromising theatrical film.”
Pellegrino’s book covers the devastating effects of the atomic bomb, from its detonation on the 6th August 1945 to the suffering left behind in its wake.

James Cameron met a survivor of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, which has made him fast-track his first non-Avatar film since Titanic. The very subject of the film puts him in direct competition with Christopher Nolan. The Interstellar director narrated the tale of the nuclear bomb from the American side of things.

The book will be available to readers soon, but Cameron is already working on releasing an audiobook that will have a familiar voice narrating it. Recently, Cameron declared that he would be taking on a new cinematic challenge outside the world of Pandora. He's secured the rights to Charles Pellegrinos forthcoming book, Ghosts of Hiroshima, and has expressed his intentions of making a movie based on Ghosts of Hiroshima and Pellegrinos 2015 book, Last Train From Hiroshima. James Cameron is set to direct a movie adaptation of ‘Last Train from Hiroshima’ after finishing work on the fifth ‘Avatar’ film. The 70-year-old director is currently working on the next three instalments of the sci-fi franchise, though it has now been revealed Cameron will be helming a film adaptation of Charles Pellegrino’s 2015 novel of the same name - as well as the author’s upcoming book ‘Ghosts of Hiroshima’ - which features eye witness accounts from Japanese civilians and American pilots who saw atomic bombs devastate Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.The picture is said to follow a Japanese man who survived the detonation at Hiroshima in 1945, only to board a train to Nagasaki and experience the same horror again. Director James Cameron has announced that he wants to take a break from his Avatar franchise to make the ‘uncompromising’ Last Train From Hiroshima.
Early last year, James Cameron was talking about making a movie about the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, stating that it was something that he’d love to do if a window of opportunity ever opened up amid the ceaseless stream of Avatar films he is directing.
With two Avatar films already out and three more in various states of production, Cameron clearly has his hands full in the world of Pandora, but that hasn’t stopped him from announcing that he will be tackling a Hiroshima film, just as soon as time allows him to.
According to Deadline, the Piranha II director has not only purchased the rights to Charles Pellegrino’s 2015 book, Last Train From Hiroshima, but he’s also snapped up the rights to the author’s forthcoming follow-up,...

Hollywood icon James Cameron has taken on a new project focusing on war history. TheTerminator and Titanic director acquired the rights to adapt Ghosts of Hiroshima, an upcoming book by Charles Pellegrino. The film will tell the harrowing true story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi.
Yamaguchi survived the atomic bombings of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. On August 6, 1945, the 29-year-old engineer was in Hiroshima when the first bomb struck. Incredibly, Yamaguchi then went to Nagasaki only to experience the second bombing on August 9. He is the only officially recognized survivor of both attacks.
Cameron says Yamaguchi’s unique experience provides a compelling narrative. “It’s a deeply human story of survival and resilience in the face of unprecedented destruction,” Cameron said. The director hopes to blend his renowned visual storytelling with the poignant exploration of one of history’s most devastating events.

James Cameron is planning for life after Avatar. The filmmaker has purchased the rights to the forthcoming book Ghosts Of Hiroshima, and intends to direct a feature adaptation of the atomic bomb story, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Author Charles Pellegrino’s Ghosts Of Hiroshima arrives from Blackstone Publishing in August 2025 and follows his 2015 book Last Train From Hiroshima, which will also serve as the basis of the film.
Cameron’s film would in part follow the true story of then-29 year old engineer Tsutomu Yamaguchi, recognized as the only person who survived both atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II. He was on business in Hiroshima on Aug. 6, when the American military bombed the city, and returned by train to Nagasaki the next day, only to survive its bombing on Aug. 9. It is estimated that between 110,000 and 210,000 people died as a result of the bombings.

James Cameron is back. And he’ll make sure that it’s with a bang. Looks like one of Hollywood’s most decorated directors has chosen quite a novel topic for his next movie, apart from the Avatar sequels that is.
The Oscar winning film-maker has never been one to shy away from doing things that seem larger than life. And his next movie looks all set to do just that, as he attempts to bring alive on screen the life of a man who has done something which is seldom heard of by people – survive 2 nuclear bombings.

While James Cameron is deep into post-production on Avatar: Fire and Ash and in development for Avatar 4 & 5, he has found a new project outside of Pandora. Deadline has learned that Cameron purchased the rights to Charles R. Pellegrinos forthcoming Ghosts of Hiroshima as well as his 2015 book Last Train From Hiroshima, both of which will be combined into one "uncompromising theatrical film." The movie will be titled Last Train From Hiroshima and focuses on the true story of a Japanese man during World War II who survived the atomic blast at Hiroshima and then the nuclear explosion in Nagasaki after taking a train.
Ghost of Hiroshima is set to hit bookshelves in August 2025 to mark the 80th anniversary of the dropping of the Atomic bomb in 1945. Both books by Pellegrino feature eyewitness accounts of those who experienced the atomic explosions firsthand, including the Japanese civilians on the ground and the American flyers in the air.

James Cameron‘s post-Avatar plans keep getting bigger. After purchasing the rights to adapt Charles Pellegrino‘s 2015 novel Last Train From Hiroshima, Cameron snapped up the right to the follow-up book Ghosts of Hiroshima. Cameron says he plans to combine both novels for a film he’ll shoot as soon as his Avatar production schedule allows. The Hiroshima project marks Cameron’s first non-Avatar film project since 1997’s Titanic. Cameron still plans to call his forthcoming film Last Train From Hiroshima.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Cameron’s Last Train From Hiroshima film focuses on the actual story of a Japanese man during World War II who survived the atomic blast at Hiroshima, got on a train to Nagasaki, and survived the nuclear explosion in that city. Wow! What are the odds?
Deadline says Pellegrino’s books take inspiration from the voices of bomb survivors and the new science of Forensic archaeology.

There are but a few ironclad certainties in life: death, taxes, and the fact that you should never, ever bet against James Cameron. The celebrated filmmaker has made an unparalleled career out of taking some of the most ambitious (and wildly expensive) concepts imaginable and spinning straw into box office gold. Of late, that talent has largely been confined to the world of "Avatar," which has consumed practically the last two decades of his life. But even though the franchise is set to dominate for at least another three entries, it appears that the director is finally tearing his gaze away from the far-flung world of Pandora and setting his sights on a production much closer to home.
Deadline has the scoop on Cameron's next intended movie, one that will mark a rare pivot to a non-original and non-"Avatar" project. According to the report, he's purchased the rights to...

Mark Pellegrino excels in portraying contrasting roles as Lucifer in Supernatural & "God" in Lost. Pellegrino played two Bible-inspired characters in major TV shows around the same period. Jacob and Lucifer, both played by Pellegrino, share eerie and rage-filled qualities despite their differences.
Two of actor Mark Pellegrino's most notable TV roles, one of which is Lucifer from Supernatural, could not be more different from each other. As the series follows the Winchester brothers fighting off mystical evil, Supernatural has had its fair share of nefarious villains. Many of these villains have Biblical roots, including the key villains Azazel and Lucifer, the latter of which is devilishly played by Pellegrino. Pellegrino appears in 38 episodes of Supernatural, starting in season 5 and continuing to appear sporadically throughout other Supernatural seasons.
Though Pellegrino was only in a fraction of the episodes of Supernatural, his performance was one of the highlights of the series.

The following contains spoilers for American Rust: Broken Justice, now streaming on Prime Video.
The second season of American Rust shines an even harsher spotlight on the Poe family. Billy Poe, played by Alex Neustaedter, has been released from prison -- but not before he ended up in a coma. Now Billy is simply trying to get back to a normal life, but he's not entirely sure what normal is.
Billy's father Virgil Poe is portrayed by Mark Pellegrino -- best known as Supernatural's Lucifer. While Virgil isn't the devil, he's certainly not an upstanding human being, either. He seems to have no real ambition of his own, and takes his estranged wife Grace's demand for a divorce as a joke. Both characters have some soul-searching to do, and Cbr spoke to both actors about the roads their characters walk in Season 2.

Newsmax’s right-wing panel show “The Right Squad” was reduced to an incomprehensible screaming match Friday during a debate over the killing of Jordan Neely.
Neely, a homeless street artist, was choked to death by U.S. Marine veteran Daniel Penny on a New York subway earlier this month after the former began shouting he was hungry, thirsty and had little to live for. Neely had allegedly been acting erratically prior to Penny’s chokehold, but had not attacked anyone, a witness who recorded the incident told CNN. Neely’s death was ruled a homicide, and Penny has been charged with second-degree manslaughter for the fatal choke.
Newsmax host Jenn Pellegrino asked the panel if these charges marked “the beginning of the end of the Good Samaritan,” which sparked a lively shouting duel amongst the pundits.

Nancy Meyers is still searching for a new home for her film after parting ways with Netflix over budget concerns. But in the meantime, the director of rom-com classics like 2006’s The Holiday and Something’s Gotta Give has dropped some hints on Instagram, revealing details about her movie, confirming the title, and sharing its origin.
Deadline reported that Scarlett Johansson, Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz and Michael Fassbender were in talks to star, but that the proposed Netflix budget — which sources say was coming in around $130 million — was causing issues. Sources say that while the studio was fine with $130 million, Meyers was fighting for $150 million, with $80 million of that going to above-the-line costs.
The film is titled Paris Paramount, which we were first to tell you about in April 2022. It tells the story of an above-the-line filmmaking duo who reunite (begrudgingly) on set after falling in and out of love with each other.

In Netflix’s Partner Track, the rom-com is a bait and switch for a story less about finding your love and more about finding yourself.
The 10-episode first season, which dropped on the streamer on Aug. 26, follows Ingrid Yun (Arden Cho), a talented and determined first-generation Korean American and senior associate who is looking to secure a junior partnership at her high-profile law firm.
But as she finds — with the help of her friends, family and a few love interests — her persistence and ingenuity might not be enough to overcome the racism and sexism of her white male-dominated workplace.
Based on the book by Helen Wan, showrunner Georgia Lee drops viewers into a glossy world where on the surface, seemingly the biggest challenge for the beautiful, intelligent and fiercely good lawyer is only whether the men she dates are good enough to be her partner.
