Detective Sherdil (2025) Movie Review & Ending Explained: Who’s the Real Killer of Pankaj Bhatti?
Image
Ravi Chhabriya’s “Detective Sherdil” (2025) is a straight-up disaster from the get-go. Nothing is redeeming about it. Be it a spectacularly demented plot, a sleuth who just miraculously unlocks a mystery, the embarrassingly tawdry music and editing compete to rattle your patience and nerves. Among an ensemble stacked with respectable, fine actors like Ratna Pathak Shah, Boman Irani, you wonder how they could even be compelled to go through the grind of this blatantly silly film. Diljit Dosanjh gets a flashy introduction, overselling his sleuth’s skills, which is an instant recipe for disaster.

Detective Sherdil (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Detective Sherdil (Diljit Dosanjh) is a sleuth of great self-possession. When the film opens, he compares himself to the greats, like Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh, and adds that he does something that neither had ever done. He makes reels after cracking a case. The film has this jocular spirit, but the humour is so juvenile,...

“Detective Sherdil, A Complacent Smug Diljit Dosanjh Can’t Rescue This Whydunnit” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Forget whodunnit. The bigger question is, whydunit? Why was this anaemic bland murder mystery even made? Was it a death wish? Or maybe a debt to be cleared? Or perhaps someone held the team at gunpoint and ordered a murder mystery with no twist, no surprises, zero interest, from both the makers and the audience.

Sigh! One more dud from Zee5, the Ott streamers who specialize in shooting themselves in the foot. Detective Sherdil is supposed to be funny, acerbic, sharp, and bang-on. He also plays the harmonica whenever he is inspired. It could be dead body or a living nobody: Sherdil has a tune—one tune, mind it—for all occasions. It is like Rajesh Khanna in Mere sapno ki rani without Sharmila Tagore for inspiration.

All this should have made Sherdil the most interesting detective since Sherlock and his Bengali cousin Byomkesh. As played by the normally-likeable Diljit Dosanjh,...

Image
Detective Sherdil Trailer Review Out! Ft. Diljit Dosanjh, Ratna Pathak Shah & Others ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Ali Abbas Zafar previously collaborated with Diljit Dosanjh in his 2022 directorial Jogi. He’s now turned the writer-producer for his Ad Ravi Chhabriya’s directorial debut with the Punjabi superstar, Detective Sherdil. The official trailer is now out; scroll below for our detailed review.

Detective Sherdil Trailer

The 2-minute and 29-second long trailer revolves around the assassination of a billionaire, Pankaj Bhatti (played by Boman Irani). He was shot to death, and his car was blown up. The whodunnit is investigated by Karamchand, a detective played by Diljit Dosanjh.

The official trailer of Detective Sherdil has left me with mixed feelings. I love how Diljit Dosanjh is a natural! He’s charming and witty and funny, and I’m all in for it! I’ve no second thoughts about the supporting cast – Diana Penty, Boman Irani,...

Image
Ratna Pathak Shah On Her Inter-Faith Marriage With Naseeruddin Shah ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )

Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah are one of the most adored couples in the Hindi film fraternity. Love blossomed between the two because of their mutual love for acting, theatre and creativity. However, they also had their share of obstacles since Naseeruddin was not divorced officially from his first wife and there was also some resistance from Ratna’s parents towards their union.

According to Bollywood Shaadi, Ratna Pathak Shah met Naseeruddin Shah in during Satyadev Dubey’s play ‘Sambhog Se Sanyaas Tak.’ They were drawn towards each other for their dedication towards their craft and the passion for acting. The couple soon fell in love but could not tie the knot since Shah was not divorced legally from his first wife Manara Sikri.

That was not the only issue that the couple faced. Ratna Pathak...

Director Shakun Batra Revisits Kapoor & Sons and more!
Image
Subhash K Jha takes us back to 2016 and Karan Johar-Shakun Batra’s critically acclaimed Kapoor & Sons that starred Rishi Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ratna Pathak Shah, and Rajat Kapoor in this fantastic feature. Plus, as a special bonus, we hear from Shakun Batra about the making of Kapoor & Sons, “The movie’s been a blessing and has given me so much love… and I owe so much of where I am today to that film coming together and all the people who made it happen.” But more from Batra in a few lines — let’s revisit the Kapoor & Sons.

It was Leo Tolstoy who said it. “All happy families are alike. Each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” The family in Kapoor & Sons, played with magnificent eloquence by actors who know their job, is happy on the surface. But scratch the polished exterior,...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha On Anubhav Sinha‘s Thappad
Image
This time in his terrific This Day That Year feature series Subhash K Jha looks at Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad, which released in 2020 and featured the brilliant Taapsee Pannu.

Damaged humanism, fractured emotions, and flawed relationships are the crux of Great Cinema. If there was no Auschwitz, there would be no Schindler’s List. If Madhubala had not died so young, would we still think of her as being so unattainable? And if Romeo and Juliet had lived happily ever after, would Shakespeare’s play have become a timeless classic?

Thappad is a flawed but important film on a fractured marriage. Like director Anubhav Sinha’s earlier monumental works Mulk and Article 15, Thappad tears at the hypocrisy of the middle class to show how pathetically short we fall as a collective nation when it comes to basic human rights even within the four walls of private homes.

The issue in Thappad is ostensibly solvable.

Shakun Batra Speaks To Subhash K Jha As They Revisit The Quirky Kareena-Imran Romcom Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu
Image
Director Shakun Batra talks to Subhash K Jha as they take a look back at the quirky romantic comedy 2012’s Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, which starred the unique and brilliant jodi of Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

In 2012, within two weeks, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions gave us two diametrically opposite genres of cinema from two debutant directors. If Karan Malhotra’s Agneepath took us back to the grand formalistic revenge drama of the 1970s. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu takes us into the future of Bollywood, where actors don’t have to sing. They don’t have to act. They just have to be as normal as people in love tend to be.

Shakun Batra’s interesting, though flawed, is comprised of a series of elegantly written, confident, but never in-your-face scenes about what happens when two opposites meet in a city as all-embracing as Las Vegas. Of course,...

Sidharth Malhotra’s 6 Roles That Prove He Can Act
Image
Many think he is just a pretty face. But since his debut in 2012 with Student Of The Year, Sidharth Malhotra has constantly striven to disprove the belief that goodlooking people can’t act. Here is his 6 bravest efforts.

1. Ek Villain (2014): Though ‘villain’ Ritesh Deshmukh walked away with the critical acclaim, Sidharth as the grieving hero packed in a certain mount of florid intensity combined with some terrific stunts. This was one Malhotra’s earliest successes. Interestingly in his other release Hasee Toh Phasee the same year Malhotra happily allowed Parineeti Chopra to take centrestage.

2. Kapoor & Sons (2016): This one featured a dreamlike ensemble cast including the great Rishi Kapoor , Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor and Karan Johar’s favourite Pakistani import Fawad Khan. But Sid Malhotra held his own, maybe because Alia Bhatt was also round. Back then they were supposed to be seeing one another. How time flies!

In fact, when there was a public intervention, and Bollywood celebs started dissing and slyly digging into Pahlaj Nihalani’s decision, he even asked for 1 lakh public votes for Jab Harry Met Sejal’s trailer’s Censor Board clearance.
