10 Best Sudhir Mishra Movies
Image
Sudhir Mishra’s films are intimate human dramas that illuminate the politics of everyday life and are affected by the forces of socio-political reactionism. His early cinematic creations tackled the rejection of the values, forms, performance modes, and the style of the mainstream, commercial cinema with privileged entertainment values, spectacular display, and melodrama. His out-of-the-box thought process has helped him to establish aesthetic conventions and modes of production of the Hindi film industry, and has also challenged the boundaries between what is alternative and mainstream.

What Sudhir Mishra created was a vision of cinema as an expressive art form, an inspirational form, and a sense of connectedness to a larger and serious international and niche national artistic enterprise that is motivated by the drive to know and represent the world adequately. His films did not shy away from expressing reality in its broadest sense, highlighting varied aesthetic forms, demonstrating, and...

Revisiting Shah Rukh-Salman-Madhuri’s Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam
Image
Subhash K Jha turns the focus on Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, which featured the epic cast of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Madhuri Dixit, that released in 2002.

The love triangle about a jealous husband(Shah Rukh Khan), his devoted wife (Madhuri Dixit), and a supportive friend (Salman Khan) who’s mistaken for the wife’s lover by her husband, seeks inspiration from a 1974 Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz-Sanjeev Kumar starrer Aap Ki Kasam. In Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, the ornate packaging, top-heavy star cast, and the outmoded conventions of marital obligations and fidelity had the film trade very worried.

Though Madhuri hadn’t had much luck with Shah Rukh, she had a historic hit Hum Aapke Hain Koun with Salman Khan.

The film wasn’t only crucial for the doddering fortunes of multi-starrers but also for producer K.C. Bokadia, whose career fell on hard times in the 1990s after a couple...

Must Watch Films For Eid
Image
Bollywood cinema has always been known for its spirit of celebration. Singing, dancing, and having a good time has been an important part of the Bollywood experience. Here are the five festive films that must be seen this Eid.

1. Hum Saath Saath Hain:

While most would opt for Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum…Apke Hain Koun as the ultimate festive fare, this feel-good followup after the historic Hum…Aapke Hain Koun from Barjatya’s school of familial merrymaking has a string of terrific stars from Salman Khan to Saif Ali Khan eating, singing, and dancing through a stream of nursery-rhyme styled songs composed in juvenile style by Ram Laxman-. The entire 4-hour film is a pleasure binge for Alok Nath’s Chaturvedi family as they picnic, party, a wedding, and celebrate from Eid to Diwali to marriage anniversaries. Life is one long celebration in this thinly-plotted excuse to celebrate the joys of family togetherness.

This Day That Year: A look at Gritty Thanks Maa
Image
Once again, Subhash K Jha revisits a film in his This Day That Year series, this installment shines the spotlight on the film Thanks Maa. A gritty hard hitting drama of a street kid’s search for an infant’s mother also, according to the director, paid a tribute to Salman Khan’s career.

Strongly reminiscent of Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay and far more resonantly representative of Mumbai’s slum kids than Slumdog Millionaire, Thanks Maa, which clocks fifteen years on March 5, is a journey into lives that were born into despair. Without the crutches of self-pity, debutant director Irfan Kamal (son of the reputed choreographer Kamal) enters the world of the orphaned protagonist named Municipality, who, on one of those routine days of scavenging, stealing, and hanging around with his friends waiting for the next meal comes across an abandoned little infant. The film shows the gritty, harsh...

Looking back at Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety As Kartik Aaryan’s Wreck-Tangle Turns 7 Years Old
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at the Luv Ranjan directed Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, which starred Kartik Aaryan as it celebrates 7 years!

I have known Kartik Aaryan from the time he was seen for the first time in Pyaar Ka Punchnama. Director Luv Ranjan had arranged a screening of the film for me. We were all there to watch what Ranjan (I can’t bring myself to call him Luv) described as a sock-in-the-guts film.

“Sir, aapko bahot achcha lagega. Especially watch out for that boy Kartik Tiwari (I think that’s what Kartik was initially known as). He will surprise you.”

Luv Ranjan, I knew from the time he assisted Suneel Darshan. It’s hard to believe Ranjan comes from Suneel Darshan’s school of filmmaking. To call them poles apart would be an insult to the pole. Just as calling Kartik a revelation would be an understatement.

“Kaushaljis Versus Kaushal Has Only Its Heart (And Nothing Else) In The Right Place” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Director Seema Desai’s film about a elderly couple in the town of perfumes, Kannauj, trying to fob off the stink of decay in their 23-year-old marriage, has everything going for it: a solid cast, for one. Ashutosh Rana and Sheeba Chadha, two durable dependables of the entertainment world, struggle hard to overcome the listlessness at the heart of the plot.

Chaddha and Rana have their moments—how can they not?! But the projection of a fractured marriage remains largely frayed and feeble right to the predictable end.

Fine young actor Pavail Gulati plays the couple’s absentee son, Yug, who returns home to cement his parents’ splintered marriage. Gulati, too, pitches in with a sincere performance but fails to lift the end product from the morass of languorousness. Yug’s workplace and his friends at work seem like caricatures moonlighting as professionals.

There is no dearth of good intention...

Tanushree Dutta slams Ajay Devgn
Tanushree Dutta has slammed actor-producer Ajay Devgn for continuing to work with rape accused Alok Nath in the forthcoming film "De De Pyaar De". The actress called him morally bankrupt and a spineless hypocrite.

"Tinsel town is full of liars, show-offs and spineless hypocrites. And it seems by a large public consensus that the sign post is pointing currently at Ajay Devgn," Tanushree, who had sparked India's #MeToo movement, said in a statement.

"During the #MeToo movement in India, the actor had tweeted and sworn never to work with those accused and now in a surprising and convenient turn of events is working with rape and harrasment accused Alok Nath and supporting him to make a comeback to Bollywood," she added.?

Tanushree said it was possible for the "De De Pyaar De" team to re-shoot Alok's scenes once the allegations against him were made public by writer-director Vinta Nanda.

"Nobody...

‘3 Idiots’ Director Rajkumar Hirani Accused of Sexual Harassment
Rajkumar Hirani
Updated: Rajkumar Hirani, one of India’s most successful filmmakers, has been accused of sexual harassment. His accuser is a woman assistant director who worked on Hirani’s 2018 blockbuster “Sanju.”

Hirani has denied all accusations. The alleged harassment took place during the post production process of “Sanju.” The film was released in June 2018 and grossed $83 million worldwide. It has six nominations at the upcoming Asian Film Awards, including a best director selection for Hirani.

After initially speaking through his lawyer, Hirani issued a media statement on Sunday: “I was completely shocked when these allegations were brought to my notice about two months back. I had suggested immediately that it is essential to take this matter to any committee or any legal body. The complainant has chosen to go to the media instead. I want to very strongly state that this is a false, malicious and mischievous story being spread with...

Bollywood taken by storm by the #MeToo movement
Last year, the #MeToo-movement started in Hollywood after producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual harassment by several women. The most asked question back then was: When will Bollywood start it’s #MeToo movement? Now, almost a year later it’s Bollywood’s turn.

Just recently Tanushree Dutta took it upon herself to speak up about an incident that happened on the sets of the film Horn Ok Pleasss about ten years ago. She told her story in 2008 but wasn’t taken seriously. Nobody supported her. Today various actresses expressed their support to her. This has led to an explosion of stories by women who were sexually harassed by men in the film industry.

Nobody saw this tsunami of stories coming.

Social Media, especially Twitter exploded. Several celebrities have now been accused of sexual harassment. These celebs include Nana Patekar, Vikas Bahl, Subhash Ghai, Sajid Khan, Chetan Bhagat, Rajat Kapoor,...

#MeToo: Bollywood Takes Steps to Curb Sexual Harassment
With fresh allegations of sexual harassment emerging daily from all departments in Bollywood, industry bodies, including the Producers Guild of India, the Screen Writers Association, and the Cine & TV Artists Association, have set up committees to probe the harassment issue.

Pgi members have been asked to implement India’s Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, if they hadn’t done so already. Specialized agencies will conduct workshops on best practices.

Leading studio, Yash Raj Films has terminated the services of Ashish Patil, who was VP of brand partnerships and talent management, and business and creative head of youth division Y-Films, after accusations against him. Celebrity management agency, Kwan has asked founder Anirban Blah to step aside and is redistributing his stake in the company to the other partners. The producers of “Housefull 4” have replaced director Sajid Khan with “Housefull 3” director Farhad Samji. Filmmaker, Vinta Nanda has filed...

Bollywood’s Expanding #MeToo Movement Hits Productions
The #MeToo movement arrived late in India. But it is a juggernaut that is here to stay, and is having a measurable effect on production.

Aamir Khan Productions is to withdraw from a film where one of the filmmakers is accused of harassment in a 2014 case that is currently sub-judice. “This is an opportunity for the film industry to introspect and take concrete steps towards change,” actor/producer Aamir Khan and producer Kiran Rao tweeted in a joint statement. “For far too long women have borne the brunt of sexual exploitation. It has to stop.”

The movement kicked off with actress Tanushree Dutta accusing veteran actor Nana Patekar of harassment on the sets of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleasss” in 2008, an allegation she made then and again last week. This was followed by harassment allegations against Phantom Films founding partner Vikas Bahl by an employee. That led to the dissolution of the company.

“Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is one of the most invigorating rom-coms” – Subhash K Jha
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety

Starring Kartik Aryan, Nushrat Bharucha, Sunny Singh

Directed by Luv Ranjan

There is something to be said in favour of the spoken word in the movies, or the dialogue as its known. When sharply written, these words can embrace the characters in layers of unvarnished molten gold.

Sure enough the repartees in Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety(Sktks) just roll off the characters’ tongues making them sound sassy and sombre even when they are being mean and vicious just because it suits the script’s purposes.

And God knows, this film needs no excuse to let the words flow. So full marks to co-writer Rahul Mody and Luv Ranjan for investing the vivacious proceedings with a verbal gusto that I found to be more sparkling in wit and insinuations than the dialogues in any recent film.

Sktks is the story of the eponymous Titu (Sunny Singh,...

Alok Nath
Alok Nath is all set to make a 360 degree turn and shock viewers like never before. In the upcoming film Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Alok Nath essays a very distinct character. At one point, in the trailer, he even abuses, believe it or not! Also, the way he does and the manner in which he’s standing and holding his alcohol glass is unlike what Alok Nath has done in other films or is popularly known for.

Raees Movie Review – Subhash K Jha
Raees

Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan

Directed by Rahul Dholakia

It’s the same old wine—hooch wine—in a not-so-new battle, and I do mean battle. Prohibition in Gujarat is the playground for this pulsating saga of twisted morality. As the Good Cop Majmudar (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) wages an all-out war against hooch seller Raees Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) what emerges from the smoke fire and ashes is a kitschy 1980s-styled potboiler that tells the story of a gangster’s protege who grows into a Robin Hoodlum, the do-dogooder whose Ammi (Sheeba Chadha, so brilliant and yet such a fugitive figure in the screenplay) teaches him that no job is too small or petty.

Taking that maternal advice a bit too seriously (probably uttered by the short-lived Ammi-jaan in an unguarded moment after she may have heard it being said by Alok Nath on Buniyaad) Raees spends...

Alok Nath punishes son for drunken driving
Alok Nath
<img class="size-full wp-image-661161 aligncenter" src="http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Alok-Nath.jpg" alt="Alok-Nath" width="620" height="420" /> Unlike other star-fathers who form a protective shield around their guilty sons, whenever the youngsters are caught on the wrong side of the law, Alok Nath has reacted sharply and strongly to his son Shivang's drunken driving misdemeanour earlier this week. Apparently Alok, a disciplinarian who has refused to pamper his son silly, immediately took action when his son was booked for drunken driving. The boy was given a serious dressing down, and apparently some blows were also inflicted to drive in the point that such behaviour is unacceptable. Confirming the same, Alok who was trolled with the usual 'Sanskari' jokes the minute his son was booked says, "Shivang has been subjected to some corporal punishment and he's promised me he will never ever drive under the influence of alcohol." Alok Nath's son is all set for a career in film acting and the last thing needed at this moment are such scandals.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo Movie Review
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo feels like the Rajshri that brought Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun in some ways good (family relationships, songs feel timeless) and bad (several very retro elements, themes feel unoriginal), but there’s an important difference: It doesn’t feel nearly as relatable.

The family of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo isn’t even upper middle class; it’s royals upon royals. These are #richpeopleproblems, where the resentment between siblings really comes down to who controls the family wealth and property, with some drama from different parentage thrown in. It’s watchable, but it doesn’t tug the heartstrings the same way.

The story is this: Vijay Singh (Salman Khan) is a prince on the eve of coronation to king (the first point at which you’ll ask, “What era is this?”) when someone tries to kill him. While Vijay is recovering from a fall...
