Habib Dembélé, Jean Dujardin, Ivan Franek, Natacha Lindinger, Fatou N'Diaye, Wladimir Yordanoff, and Pierre Niney in OSS 117: Alerte rouge en Afrique noire (2021)
"I'm a spy, not a nanny." Madman Films in Australia has debuted an official trailer for the French comedy Oss 117: From Africa with Love, the third movie in the Oss 117 series starring Jean Dujardin. This series is a French riff on James Bond, but with a much dumber agent, and with more crass humor. This sequel originally premiered as the Closing Night film at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival this year, which seems like a very odd choice. From Africa with Love is set in 1981, 14 years after Lost in Rio, and follows Oss 117 on a mission in Black Africa ("Afrique Noire" - a made-up country in Africa) where he teams up with a much younger agent, Oss 1001. In addition to Jean Dujardin, the comedy co-stars Pierre Niney, Fatou N'Diaye, Natacha Lindinger, Habib Dembélé, Pol White, Gilles Cohen, Alex Lutz, and ...

Image
Sean Baker’s “Red Rocket” won a pair of prizes at the 47th Deauville American Film Festival where “Blue Bayou,” “Down With the King,” “Pleasure” and “John and the Hole” also picked up awards during the closing ceremony. Michael Shannon, who was previously at Deauville with “99 Homes” and “Take Shelter,” received the honorary Talent Award from French helmer Bertrand Bonello, who sat on the jury, during the event.

“Red Rocket” stars Simon Rex as a retiring porn star who returns to his small Texas hometown where no one is eager to see him back. The movie, which world premiered in competition at Cannes, won the jury prize (shared with Ninja Thyberg’s “Pleasure”) and the critics awards. Both Baker and Rex were on hand in Deauville to receive the awards. Baker said there were fewer and fewer filmmakers directing indie films in the U.S. “Franchises and series will...

Dylan Penn to Receive Deauville Festival’s Hollywood Rising-Star Award
Image
Dylan Penn, the young actor of Sean Penn’s “Flag Day” which competed at Cannes, will be receiving the Hollywood Rising-Star Award at the upcoming Deauville American Film Festival.

The Hollywood Rising-Star Award launched in 2011 and handed out its inaugural nod to Ryan Gosling and Jessica Chastain, and went on to pay tribute to Paul Dano, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Olsen, Chloé Grace Moretz, Daniel Radcliffe, Shailene Woodley, Elle Fanning and Sophie Turner.

Penn, who is the daughter of Sean Penn and Robin Wright, received critical acclaim for her performance in “Flag Day,” in which she held her first major role as Jennifer Vogel. Described as an intimate family portrait, the film is inspired by the real-life story of Vogel and the dysfunctional relationship she had with her fascinating father, who happened to be a flamboyant conman and bank robber.

Int’l Critics Line: Lisa Nesselson On Jean Dujardin Secret Agent Spoof ‘Oss 117: From Africa With Love’
Image
The cluelessly arrogant secret agent with a name as silly as his retrograde attitudes — Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, aka agent Oss 117 — is back in Oss 117: From Africa With Love. Everybody loves a secret agent, even a demonstrably buffoonish one, and versatile Jean Dujardin is a deadpan delight as the staunchly patriotic Frenchman whose adventures were last on the big screen in 2009’s Oss 117: Lost In Rio and 2006’s Oss 117: Cairo, Nest Of Spies.

Michel Hazanavicius — for whom Dujardin starred in 2011’s five-time Oscar winner The Artist — directed the previous Oss entries. Taking the reins here is talented multi-hyphenate Nicolas Bedos (La Belle Epoque), and while the result is not consistently as funny as the first two installments, this is an entertaining popcorn movie that’s also a healthy satire of imperialist self-assurance, perhaps best summed up by Hubert’s sincere belief that everybody on Earth wishes they were French.

Image
The Cannes Film Festival will close its 74th edition with “Oss 117: From Africa With Love,” the third opus of the spy spoof franchise headlined by Oscar-winning actor Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”).
