Hanks has provided us with some of the most memorable moments in the show since his early days. Let’s look back at some of his most memorable Saturday Night Live moments.
5. Tom Hanks’ SNL debut (1985)
At 29, Tom Hanks made his SNL debut in Season 11, Episode 5. The show was in the middle of a cast and producer reboot, and Hanks brought a spark of fun that the audience instantly latched onto. In the cold open, he played an Entertainment Tonight host, and despite being new to the sketch format, he nailed the tone.

Lilo and Stitch has proven that there's still plenty of life in Disney's live-action remakes of animated classics, but the recent reimagining of one of the Mouse House's most popular and well-known tales was a rare misfire.
Snow White arrives on Disney+ tomorrow, and has officially finished up its box office run as one of Disney's worst performing live-action remakes.
The movie, which stars Rachel Zegler in the title role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, ended its theatrical run with $205.5 million worldwide. Only 2016's Pete's Dragon ($143.7 million and 2020's Mulan ($69.9 million) - which, to be fair, debuted during Covid with a simultaneous Premier Access streaming release - have fared worse.
Snow White received mostly negative reviews (40% on Rotten Tomatoes), but was plagued by controversy (whether it was warranted or not is up for debate) in the build-up to its release, which probably didn't help.
Be it Zegler's comments about the animated original,...

This Island Earth celebrates its 70th anniversary today — it premiered in New York City on June 10, 1955, before officially opening five days later — but it still doesn’t receive the respect it deserves in the annals of science fiction.
At a glance, the pulpy space opera may appear to typify ‘50s schlock, a reputation exacerbated by being the subject of Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. A closer look, however, reveals that much of the film goes against the grain for sci-fi of the era, helping to lay the groundwork for those to come.
Based on the 1952 novel by Raymond F. Jones, This Island Earth is directed by Joseph M. Newman (“The Twilight Zone”), with uncredited contributions by Jack Arnold (Creature from the Black Lagoon), and written by Franklin Coen (The Train) and George Callahan.

Snow White continues Disney’s strategy of adapting its classic animated films into live-action features, but does so by taking things all the way back to the beginning. The original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released in 1937 and served as Disney’s first feature length animated film, making it one of the most influential animated films (if not films) of all time. The live-action remake stars West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler as the Disney princess and Gal Gadot as her stepmother, the Evil Queen.
While the past was very much honored in this new take on the story by director Marc Webb–Snow White pulled from original concept art to expand on the first film’s world–the movie was also beholden to modern moviemaking techniques. This was also true with the musical score, composed by Jeff Morrow. While other musicians like Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and...

Disney‘s live-action Snow White remake is set to arrive on Digital on May 13, followed by 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD on June 24.
The movie, which stars Rachel Zegler as the titular princess and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, did not perform very well at the box office (probably an understatement), and had yet to pass the $100 million milestone domestically in its third weekend in theaters.
Snow White will finish its theatrical run with just over $200 million worldwide, and is expected to end up costing the studio upwards of $115 million.
Per the official press release: "The live-action musical retelling of the classic animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sweeps audiences of all ages into an adventure that blends nostalgia, notable new visuals, and a memorable soundtrack, taking story-telling to all-new fairytale heights. New productions of long-beloved songs complement five original “contemporary kingdom” tunes thoughtfully crafted by Egot winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul,...

As if Disney's live-action Snow White remake wasn't experiencing enough box office woes, the movie has now been banned completely in one particular region.
According to Variety, Snow White has been banned from playing in all movie theaters in Lebanon due to the involvement of Evil Queen actress Gal Gadot, who is said to be on the country's "boycott list."
Lebanon’s Interior Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar reportedly ordered the ban after being prompted to take action by the country’s film and media watchdog amid Israel’s ongoing attacks on Hezbollah. However, Beirut-based Middle East distributor Italia Films believes that the ban would have happened anyway, as Gadot has long been on Lebanon’s “Israel boycott list” and no movie in which she appears in has ever been released there.
The Wonder Woman star has been an open supporter of Israel, and served in the Israel Defense Forces (as her...

Disney's Snow White arrived in theaters on Friday, and the Mouse House's latest live-action remake looks set for a disappointing opening weekend at the box office.
The musical fantasy adventure, which stars Rachel Zegler as the titular Princess and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, came in under already modest $45 million estimates with a $43 million domestic debut. The movie took in another $44.3 million overseas, which means it will fail to hit its predicted $100 million global bow with just $87.3 million.
This was enough to give Snow White the No. 1 spot, and the movie is sure to benefit from a lack of big-screen competition for the next couple of weeks before A Minecraft Movie hits theaters.
A recent Forbes article claimed that Snow White's budget had ballooned to a whopping $269.4 million by the end of 2023 (current reports put it at $250M), which obviously puts a lot of pressure on the movie to...

Snow White Now Set For $45M Debut After Recieving Worst CinemaScore Of Any Disney Live-Action Remake
Disney's Snow White is now in theaters, and the Mouse House's latest live-action remake isn't exactly off to the most magical start at the domestic box office.
The musical fantasy adventure, which stars Rachel Zegler as the titular Princess and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, took in $16 million on Friday (including Thursday pre-shows), which is just slightly higher than 2019's Dumbo.
Despite initial estimates of $50 million, the movie is now on track for a $45 million (some believe it'll be closer to $48M) opening weekend in the U.S., but is still expected to pass (or at least hit) $100 million worldwide by Monday.
A recent Forbes article claimed that Snow White's budget had ballooned to a whopping $269.4 million by the end of 2023 (current reports put it at $250M), which obviously puts a lot of pressure on the movie to become a massive box office success. The film won't have...

Disney’s latest live-action remake of one of their classic animations is “Snow White,” and if you’re wondering how close it sticks to the original, you’re not alone. Especially when it comes to the songs.
Now in theaters, the film follows Snow White (Rachel Zegler), a young princess who loses both of her parents and now lives with just the Evil Queen. Snow remembers the kingdom as it was under her parents’ rule though, pushing the Queen to act with kindness and fairness. You can guess how that goes.
In terms of story, it does deviate from the original 1937 film in various places — including the songs. For the 2025 version, Disney tapped Egot-winning “La La Land” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known together as Pasek and Paul, to create original songs for the film. But don’t worry, you’ll definitely hear a few of the classics.

Disney's Snow White arrives in theaters this weekend, and updated box office estimates are in. We also have some more social media reactions following the latest press screenings.
According to Deadline, the Mouse House's latest live-action remake is on track to take in between a $45M-$50M in North America and another $55M abroad for a worldwide debut of around $100M.
This wouldn't usually be seen as a bad start, but a recent Forbes article claimed that Snow White's budget had ballooned to a whopping $269.4 million by the end of 2023 (current reports put it at $250M), which puts a lot of pressure on the movie to become a massive box office success. The movie won't have much in the way of competition for a while, but it'll need strong legs to get it where it needs to be.

The first social media reactions to Snow White are starting to come in following last night's world premiere in LA, and they are quite a bit more positive than you may have been expecting.
Though we are used to seeing a lot of gushing first reactions for pretty much every movie, Disney's latest live-action remake has come in for backlash from all corners for a number of reasons. The trailers didn't exactly do much to build anticipation, either, even among those who would usually look forward to Disney fare.
Disney held a scaled back premiere for the movie with no press invited to interview the stars on the red carped, and many believe the reason comes down to supposed "controversies" surrounding lead stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.
Here's what actor Martin Klebba - who provides the voice of Grumpy - had to say about the premiere during an interview with THR.

The world premiere of Disney's live-action Snow White movie was held last night (we'll have the first reactions for you a little later on), but the event lacked the glitz and glam we're used to seeing when the Mouse House usually screens a new film for the first time.
Press were not invited to interview the stars on the red carpet in favor of "a more celebratory, family-friendly afternoon event to match the tone and target audience for the film."
The real reason is believed to be at least partially due to "controversies" surrounding leads Rachel Zegler, who has been an outspoken supporter of Palestine and critic of President Donald Trump, and Gal Gadot, who has come to the defence of her home country of Israel. There have also been reports that both actresses didn't really get along while shooting the movie (although this has been disputed).

When Rachel Zegler stepped onto the red carpet at the world premiere of Disney’s “Snow White” on Saturday afternoon in Hollywood, the newest Disney princess was greeted by a smaller-than-usual assembly of photographers to capture her light pink ballgown and dazzling diamonds.
Zegler’s co-star Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, soon followed, also smiling dutifully for the cameras assembled in the center of the tented venue outside the El Capitan Theatre that hosted the pre-party celebration ahead of the 3:30 p.m. screening.
Instead of the usual lineup of dozens of red carpet reporters, the only interviewers they encountered were employed by Disney, like Jodi Benson, who voiced Ariel in the studio’s 1989 animated classic “The Little Mermaid.” Such was the “scaled-back” premiere of “Snow White,” which hits theaters on March 21.

Tickets for Snow White are now on sale, and Disney has released a new trailer, a teaser focusing on the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot), and a number of new posters for its latest live-action remake.
The trailer features quite a bit of new footage of Rachel Zegler's titular Princess arriving to the Enchanted Forest, where she encounters her seven diminutive companions for the first time.
The teaser, meanwhile, shows the Queen erupting in anger upon learning that her stepdaughter still lives and is "fairest of them all." We also get to see the villain's "old crone" form, as she tricks Snow White into accepting the gift of a poisoned apple.
“I am so excited for audiences and fans around the world to see this sneak peek and to revisit the magical world of Snow White,” said director Marc Webb in a recent statement. “Our goal has always been to honor the original animated film,...

20th Century Studios released Alien: Romulus, and The Asylum was right there with their mockbuster Alien: Rubicon, ready to take advantage of anyone not paying attention when they scan the VOD listings looking for something to watch. And those who do mistake Alien: Rubicon for Alien: Romulus are likely to be quite upset because, despite the presence of aliens, these are very different films.
Astrobiologist Dr. Jeff Morrow, is planning on using his days off to take his kids, Leanne (Neeley Dayan) and Adam camping. Unfortunately, a brief stop at his lab puts an end to those plans when Adam detects a huge sphere approaching Earth from the same area his father detected a strange transmission a year or so ago.

Last year, legendary filmmaker John Carpenter teamed up with Shout! Factory to host a kaiju movie marathon called Masters of Monsters, which consisted of the original Godzilla film, Rodan; Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, and The War of the Gargantuas. That marathon was re-run earlier this month. Now the folks at Far Out magazine have dug up a 1996 article from Film Comment magazine in which Carpenter named The War of the Gargantuas as “the ultimate Japanese monster movie” – and included it on a list of his seventeen favorite “guilty pleasure” movies. It’s a fun list, so we have it included below, with thanks to this site.
Carpenter started out the Film Comment guilty pleasures article by saying, “I wasn’t raised a Catholic, so guilt never played much of a role in my life. We Methodists don’t worry about guilt all that much. In terms of cinema, however, guilt has always been very important.

Streaming on HBO Max November 17 is A Christmas Story Christmas.
From Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Max comes the long-awaited follow-up to annual holiday favorite, “A Christmas Story.” This time, Ralphie is all grown up and must deal with Christmas and all that comes with it…as a dad. Peter Billingsley returns to the role that has made kids of all ages anticipate Christmas morning like no other.
In the original 1983 film, set in the 1940s and showed annually for 24 hours on TBS & TNT, little Ralphie tries to convince his parents to get him a Red Ryder range-model Bb gun for Christmas, only to hear, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.” TNT began the Christmas Story marathon in 1997, and TBS took it over in 2004 when TNT shifted to drama programming.
Peter Billingsley plays Ralphie, a boy who desperately wants a Bb gun for Christmas. Melinda Dillon plays his mother and Darren McGavin his father.

Yes, sometimes a producer could earn ‘auteur’ status making B pictures. A name that’s never going to be uttered in the same breath as Val Lewton is Sam Katzman, who for the 1950s settled into a profitable tenure making Columbia program pictures. They pretty much stayed in the category of ‘obvious junk’ yet include a number of endearing favorites. And Katzman deserved to slip through the pearly gates just for helping get Ray Harryhausen’s feature career into motion. Besides their minimal production outlay, Katzman’s horror/sci fi attractions have one strange thing in common: they don’t carry Columbia torch Lady logos. Part One of this review takes on two of the four features in Arrow’s gorgeously appointed boxed set; reviewer Charlie Largent will follow with a review of the second pair of creature features.

"He was those characters." Apple has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary titled Who Are You, Charlie Brown?, available for streaming later in June this year. This hour-long doc special is a tribute to and also a look back at cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, who passed away in 2000. It includes conversations friends, family and others involved in the iconic comic strip to provide a portrait of the late Peanuts creator. Executive produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, the documentary special also features interviews with friends, family, cartoonists, and famous fans, as well as archival footage for lovers of the comic strip. Who Are You, Charlie Brown? is narrated by Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong'o and features interviews with Jean Schulz, Drew Barrymore, Al Roker, Kevin Smith, Billie Jean King, Noah Schnapp. With original music composed by Jeff Morrow, composer of the new series "The Snoopy Show," "Snoopy in Space,...

As if to illustrate the hypothetical “So you think you’re having a bad day?,” Canadian thriller “Hammer” puts its characters through a Rube Goldbergian obstacle course of peril in the immediate hours after a hijacked drug deal. The pileup of disasters is such that this tale might easily have been spun as some kind of grotesque comedy. But .
The result isn’t a knockout, falling between the territories of crime meller and family drama without quite maximizing either element. But it works well enough in that middle ground, making for a succinct, well-crafted suspense exercise likely to satisfy most home viewers who find it via digital and VOD release as of June 5.
Will Patton’s usual authority is a big plus in the role of Stephen Davis, a working-class father who exudes a quietly firm if put-upon fortitude in a household it’s hinted has known too much strife.

Prodigal sons, tough fathers, and the extreme situations that bring them back together once more are nothing new onscreen. It’s a tried and true dramatic formula. Hammer is the latest to give it a shot, crafting a film that mixes drama elements with thriller moments to try and craft something a bit different. Unfortunately, despite a nice performance from Will Patton, the ultimate impact left by the project is far less than you would expect. The ingredients are here for something fairly moving and easily effective, but the folks involved can’t quite pull it off. The movie is a crime tale, mixing dramatic and thriller elements, in telling the story of a father and son. For Stephen Davis (Will Patton), his estranged son Chris (Mark O’Brien) has always been an albatross around his neck. Not in the traditional ways, but in terms of worrying about him. When Stephen...

“The supreme excitement of our time! Challenging the unearthly furies of an outlaw planet!” Big-budget space opera finally came to movie screens, in Technicolor and widescreen, in this irresistible kid magnet of a sci-fi extravaganza. Viewers are split on its worth, as the screenplay caroms between mind-expanding visions and puerile dialogue. But it’s the first show to capture the thrills on those pulp sci-fi pocketbook covers, and its visual poetry plays out like an intergalactic fairy tale.

It’s controversy in the Black Lagoon! Universal releases a much-desired box of all three Gill Man epics — but goes cheap on the encoding and hands us a 3-D rendering of Revenge of the Creature at half-resolution. When is a Blu-ray not a Blu-ray? When it’s not even full HD. And all that after commissioning a state-of-the-art 4k 3-D video remaster!

"This Island Earth" & "It Came From Outer Space" Screenings, New Beverly Cinema, L.A., January 12-13
If you live in the Los Angeles area, the New Beverly Cinema is presenting a sci-fi double feature of This Island Earth (1955) and It Came From Outer Space (1953) on Saturday, January 12, 2014 and Sunday, January 13, 2014. Both films are widely considered to be classic science fiction films of the 1950s and were made during a time in which artists made up beautiful, colorful and spectacular posters first, and then the films were based on the imagery seen in the poster. Sometimes this method worked and sometimes it didn’t.
This Island Earth was directed by Joseph M. Newman, who was fairly prolific during the 1940’s and 1950’s both on the large and small screens, directing episodes of The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents for the latter. Jeff Morrow, Faith Domergue, Rex Reason, Lance Fuller and Russell Johnson star.

Octaman is a pretty terrible movie. I know this better than anyone; yet, I love every single second of it despite its numerous shortcomings. I love the monster, the baby monsters, you name it. Some may think I'm nuts, but I cannot help myself.
Finally, after decades of waiting, the film is getting an official DVD release from Bayview Entertainment/Widowmaker.
Octaman is the sought after (mainly by maniacs like myself) 1972 cult classic from director Harry Essex (Creature from the Black Lagoon) and comes to DVD in a newly remastered from 35mm widescreen edition. It features special effects makeup by future Academy Award winner Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London) and stars Kerwin Matthews (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad), Jeff Morrow (This Island Earth), and Pier Angeli (Battle of the Bulge). The DVD has original trailers, video interview, and a Retromedia Drive-In wrap-around. The DVD also includes a bonus...

Celebrities will invade Los Angeles this weekend for the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. Searchlights will blaze and flashbulbs will pop as Hollywood stars will descend from the heavens -- or maybe just the Malibu hills -- to touch the ground that regular Angelenos walk on each day. They'll smile and snarl our traffic. They'll toss their hair and forget to thank their husbands. They'll praise each other for their bravery, while collecting $75,000 gift bags. L.A. is accustomed to such strange invasions, of course. If you're a movie fan, you already know that L.A. has been invaded over the years by everything from giant atomic ants (Them), to buff cyborgs (The Terminator), to rampaging 3D zombies (Resident Evil: Afterlife). So Angelenos take invasions from movie stars in stride. But this weekend marks an anniversary of an invasion you might not know about: L.A.'s first alien invasion. This...

The 50s was a golden era of big screen sci-fi. Here’s our pick of the decade’s ten very best genre films…
Off screen and on, the 1950s was a spectacular era for science fiction. In literature, Ray Bradbury kicked off the decade with his masterpiece, The Martian Chronicles, while digest magazines like Galaxy were publishing the works of such sci-fi luminaries as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein.
In the cinema, every year brought forth a fresh wave of genre pictures, some brilliant in their awfulness (Plan 9 From Outer Space, Robot Monster), others simply brilliant. This article is devoted to the movies in the latter category.
Here, then, is my rundown of my ten favourite science fiction movies of the 50s:
