She always wanted to be a jazz singer and quit college to work in jazz clubs and strip joints which caused her parents to disown her. Before long she was signed by a record company and achieved stardom on American television in the early '60's. As she didn't like the way things were going in the States with the assassinations of Kennedy and Martin Luther King she came to Britain when she was 23. and met Laurie Holloway and started working for the B.B.C.
