Twenty years ago, NBC premiered a new sitcom based on a hit U.K. series. The Office debuted on March 24, 2005, and was not an immediate hit in its initial six-episode run. The show struggled to find its footing out of the block, with several episodes virtually xeroxed from the storylines of its British predecessor created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and transplanted, often clunkily, to Scranton, Pa. But soon enough showrunner Greg Daniels found his groove and leaned into the strengths of his formidable ensemble, led by Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and Rainn Wilson.

The Office would go on to become a must-see TV staple, running nine seasons and earning five Emmys in 42 nominations — and then becoming a hit all over again as a new generation rediscovered and binged The Office when it hit streaming. Until 2023, The Office held the record as most-streamed series, with more than 57 billion minutes watched.

“Julia” has been canceled at Max after two seasons, Variety has learned.

Max is not proceeding with a third season of its comedy-drama Julia. The decision comes a couple of weeks after the Season 2 finale of the Julia Child series was released Dec. 21.

Chris Keyser served as showrunner on Julia, which was created by Daniel Goldfarb, who wrote the pilot, and stars Sarah Lancashire as The French Chef creator.

The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer has canceled its Julia Child-inspired series Julia following a two-season run. The news comes after the second season wrapped its run Dec. 21 and amid an era of belt tightening across the television landscape, with Julia joining Our Flag Means Death in being axed at the streamer this week alone. Both seasons of Julia will continue to be available to stream on Max.

From creator Daniel Goldfarb and showrunner Chris Keyser, Sarah Lancashire starred as Child opposite David Hyde Pierce. Max did not own the show and instead paid a licensing fee to producers Lionsgate Television, which is in the midst of spinning off from premium cable network Starz.

Designed as a celebration of immigration, community and the strength of Black womanhood, the series is inspired by the stories of Henry’s mother. The series is inspired by the life of Julia Child and her long-running cooking show “The French Chef.” The first season debuted in March 2022 and the show was renewed in May.

Bloom will appear in a recurring role as Elaine Levitch. The character is described as “a dynamo who comes to Wgbh by way of CBS to work with Julia on ‘The French Chef.'”

The universe of the globally popular “Death in Paradise” series is being expanded with new show “Beyond Paradise.”

The new series follows characters who have moved from sunny Saint Marie to rural Britain. Co-commissioned by BBC One and BritBox International, and reuniting Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton in the lead roles, the six-part “Beyond Paradise,” created by Tony Jordan and Robert Thorogood, will be produced by Red Planet Pictures.

Executive chair of Red Planet, Jordan, will act as showrunner and executive producer alongside Tim Key and Belinda Campbell, and Diederick Santer and Tommy Bulfin will executive produce for BritBox International and BBC respectively. BBC Studios will handle international distribution. The series is produced by Lindsay Hughes and directed by Sandy Johnson. Filming will start on location in the U.K. later this year.

HBO Max is officially moving forward with a pilot order for a series inspired by the life of Julia Child, Variety has learned.

Titled “Julia,” the one-hour show will explore her life and her show “The French Chef,” which essentially invented food television. Through Child, the show is said to explore an evolving time in American history – the emergence of a new social institution called public television, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity, and America’s cultural growth.

"We need a real plan!" Gravitas Ventures has debuted a trailer for a road trip indie comedy adventure titled Ana, about a young woman trying to find her real father on the island of Puerto Rico. The film stars Dafne Keen (the badass girl from Logan) as Ana, who meets a man named Rafa in a chance encounter. Together they embark on a road trip to try and save him from bankruptcy, or worse, encountering mystery and danger along the way. Also starring Andy Garcia as Rafa, with Luna Lauren Velez, Ramón Franco, Julitza Berberena, and Blas Sien Diaz. This looks like an intriguing little film, but they're tossing it out rather quietly at the start of January which is really not a good sign. Perhaps it's still worth a watch? Check it out. Distributor negotiated deal with Amp International.

Gravitas Ventures has picked up Us rights to the comedy-drama Ana starring Andy Garcia, Dafne Keen and Luna Lauren and has set a January 2020 theatrical and on-demand release.

Charles McDougall directed the story about an auto dealer facing bankruptcy during the recession in Puerto Rico who discovers a nine-year-old girl sleeping in the back of one of his cars.

When the pair embark on a journey across the Caribbean island to find Ana’s father, they face an expedition filled with mystery and danger. Gravitas Ventures has set a January 3, 2020 release date.

“Game of Thrones” star Nathalie Emmanuel is No. 1 on miniseries’ call sheet — a role that was originally booked by Jessica Williams, but ultimately got recast. Brandon Mychal Smith, Zoe Boyle, Jennie Jacques, Harish Patel, Guz Khan, Rebecca Rittenhouse and John Reynolds will follow Emmanuel’s lead. “Four Weddings” also locked down a connection to the original film, with Andie MacDowell appearing as a guest star.

Eva Longoria still believes “Desperate Housewives” may have been TV’s “perfect pilot.”

“It has everything, it sets up everything,” Longoria told Variety‘s “My Favorite Podcast.” “It’s super balanced in its storytelling. It was beautiful, it was stylized, it was stylistic and was so unique.”

Longoria credits creator Marc Cherry, who spent years developing and pitching “Desperate Housewives,” and pilot director Charles McDougall for creating a show that made a splash right out of the gate. For her, the “Desperate Housewives” pilot was a masterclass in how to create and launch a TV show, and she says she still uses what she learned from that experience as a producer launching her own shows.

“I always reference back to the ‘Desperate Housewives’ pilot for many things when I’m directing,” Longoria said. “There are so many iconic things that happened in the pilot.”

Hulu’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral” series has set Jessica Williams as its star, one of four names added to the show’s main cast on Friday.

The limited series, written by Mindy Kaling and “The Mindy Project” collaborator Matt Warburton, is inspired by the 1994 romantic comedy about a group of friends whose lives are connected by the five titular events.

Williams will star as Jess, the young communications director for a New York senatorial campaign who leaves her professional and personal life behind when she receives a wedding invitation from her college schoolmate now living in London.

Boom Studios! is expanding its executive ranks a year after 20th Century Fox bought a significant minority stake in the company. Boom!, which controls the largest library of comic book IP outside of Marvel and DC, has hired Averie Huffine to head its TV department as VP of Development. She will oversee the TV efforts for Boom!, which has a first-look TV development deal at 20th Century TV Studio. Huffine will report to Stephen Christy, Boom!’s President of Development.

Averie comes to Boom!
