Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes and clips and puts it all in perspective. Many years ago, when I was in college, I made one of the most consequential decisions of my life. I quit X-Men. It was not an easy decision. I had read every single X-Men comic since I was nine years old. Back then, we had three X-Men books we need to follow if we wanted to keep track of the X-Universe: New Mutants, Uncanny X-Men and X-Factor. By the time I was in college, the number of X-titles had ballooned to a second X-Men series, X-Force, Generation X, Cable, Wolverine... the list went on. It got to the point where I said to myself: Can I really commit to my humanities classes if I'm too bogged down in X-Men lore? I could do both, but will I go outside?...

Robert De Niro has confirmed that his long-planned Scorsese collaboration, I Heard You Paint Houses, is set to shoot next year.
De Niro revealed the news to Digital Spy while promoting The Intern with Anne Hathaway.
"We are doing it... We should be doing it sometime next year," De Niro said. "We're slowly, slowly getting it in place."
This is great news for anyone who's a fan of their previous work together, whether it's Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, Raging Bull, Casino or the film that started it all, Mean Streets.
What's more, the plan is to bring Al Pacino and Joe Pesci along for the ride, making this gangster movie a who's who of seasoned big screen wise guys.
The project, also known as The Irishman, is based on a book by author Charles Brandt called I Heard You Paint Houses: The Story Of The Biggest Mob Hit In History.

After a year of dead-on-arrival box office bombs, Adam Sandler returns to the top, and all he had to do was transmogrify into an animated vampire. Hotel Transylvania 2, the surprisingly not-bad sequel to the surprisingly not-bad original, fanged and desiccated its competition and set a record for biggest September opening with a $47.5 million haul. Actually, all of the films in the top five for the weekend performed really well. Nancy Meyer’s The Intern, starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro made an admirable $18.2 million. The Maze Runner sequel scorched another $14 million, while Everest chilled audiences for $13 million. I don’t have a good pun for Johnny Depp’s Black Mass, which slightly underperformed with $11.5, but that’s still a solid haul for a fifth-place movie. There wasn’t a single film in this weekend’s top-12 that has grossed over $60 million yet, though the total cume for the...

There’s a terrific performance by Robert DeNiro at the center of Nancy Meyer’s agreeably shallow office comedy The Intern in which he plays Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old retired widower. It’s a sweet, melancholy turn that shows a kindhearted side to the actor that we rarely see. Too bad the rest of The Intern lacks the depth of DeNiro’s portrayal, but it’s still a breezy crowd-pleaser that goes down easy enough.
DeNiro’s costar in The Intern is Ann Hathaway as Jules Ostin, the owner of About The Fit, a NYC-based online fashion website so successful it employs 220 people and an office masseuse. She’s a workaholic who barely has time for her young daughter and stay-home-dad husband Matt (Anders Holm). DeNiro’s Ben is looking for something to do besides attend funerals and avoid the advances of his horny friend Patty (Linda Lavin). He decides...

If you were to picture the perfect fashion intern, 71-year-old Robert De Niro would likely not be it. But the “Raging Bull” actor slips smoothly into the role opposite Anne Hathaway in Nancy Meyer’s upcoming comedy “The Intern,” if the new trailer is anything to go by at least. The unusual premise is that Jules Ostin (Hathaway), founder of a fashion based e-commerce company, agrees to a community outreach program, prompting widower Ben Whittaker (De Niro) to join the firm as a trainee. Dubbed the Senior Intern Program, he jumps right into the role, making friends with 20-something tech...

Do you wake up tortured with the question of whether or not to sell your gorgeous Lake Tahoe vacation home? Do your sons scold you for spending too much of your disposable income on Native American baskets? Do you consider “the help” to be like family? If so, then you might enjoy Last Weekend, a gloriously pretty trifle of a film that provides a peek into how the one percent lives. Patricia Clarkson stars as Celia, your typical wealthy wife: all flowing blonde hair, gauzy white tops and loose khaki pants, she obsesses over having the right kind of flowers at the table for dinner and tries preparing meals (with the help of her cook) that have a low carbon footprint. With her excellent taste in expensive clothes and interior decor--not to mention her enviable ability to age gracefully--Celia feels straight out of a Nancy Meyer film. And naturally, like...

Continuing its very fruitful relationship with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, Universal has dated three Blumhouse horror flicks for dates through 2016.
None of the films are known as of yet, and Blumhouse’s prolific approach to filmmaking means that the three slots could go to already-announced projects or films we don’t even know about yet. It’s tricky to read into something as simple as release dates, but it’s worth noting that the October 21st spot, close to Halloween, has traditionally gone to a Paranormal Activity film, but that isn’t the case in 2016, as Paramount is the distributor for that mega-successful horror franchise.
Untitled Blumhouse Horror 1 will land on September 25th, 2015. It will have to compete with animated flick Hotel Transylvania 2 and Nancy Meyer’s The Intern, a comedy which stars Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro.

Coming off the back of warm early reviews for Song One out of Sundance, Anne Hathaway is already eyeing potential projects to follow it up, and now she’s in talks to replace Reese Witherspoon in Nancy Meyer’s The Intern.
The workplace comedy already has Robert De Niro on board, with Warner Bros. acquiring the North American rights at the Afm late last year.
The Intern tells of an owner of an Internet company who gets assigned an intern who’s a retiree (De Niro). He becomes a valuable resource and the two develop a relationship.
Hathaway would be taking the lead as the owner of the Internet company.
Witherspoon was on board to star in the lead when it sold at the Afm, but left the project half-way through last month, believed to be due to scheduling conflicts.
The Oscar-winning Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men, The Social Network) is producing.

Originally set to star Robert De Niro and Reese Witherspoon, Nancy Meyer’s The Intern is seeing a casting replacement, with Witherspoon dropping out and Anne Hathaway coming on board to take her place.
The film will find the actress playing “the founder of a fashion-based e-commerce company who agrees to a community outreach program where seniors will intern at the firm.” De Niro will take on the role of the titular intern, who “becomes indispensable at the firm.”
Considering how bland and predictable the premise of this film sounds, I’m actually quite surprised that Warner Bros. was able to draw in talent like Hathaway and De Niro. Then again, you can look at it the other way as well. If these two stars are signing on, perhaps there’s something there. Plus, Meyers has a decent track record when it comes to these types of films (What Women Want,...

Tending to her career affairs, Reese Witherspoon arrived at an office building for a business meeting in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon (January 15).
The “Sweet Home Alabama” babe looked darling in a black sweater, jeans and animal print high heels as she smiled at some shutterbugs on her way inside.
Meanwhile, it seems Reese has decided to drop out of Nancy Meyer’s upcoming comedy “The Intern,” also starring Robert DeNiro.
Due to a scheduling conflict, Ms. Witherspoon was forced to turn down the role, which is now rumored to be played by Kristen Wiig.

Disney has announced that Jon Hamm's new film, Million Dollar Arm, has started shooting. The movie is being directed by Craig Gillespie (Fright Night), and also stars Bill Paxton, Lake Bell, and Alan Arkin. Here's what the film is about:
Based on a true story, Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” follows Jb Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors. He and his partner Aash (Aasif Mandvi) will have to close their business down for good if Jb doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, Jb comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation? For men, cinema offers escapism to a degree unparalleled in cinematic history. All these comic-book films, so much of the big summer movies are about living out male fantasies. Cinema used to be the province of women, so there’s something somewhat refreshing – if just as vacuous – about a film like It’s Complicated. A Kick-Ass for the menopause set, it offers Meryl Streep as a divorcee courted by her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) and a successful architect (Steve Martin). Everyone in the film is filthy rich, and all they have to worry about it is finding love again. My review of the Blu-ray of It’s Complicated after the jump.

Who says that middle age spells the end of a Hollywood career? John Patterson celebrates two actors who've improved over time
Old age may well be "a shipwreck", as De Gaulle once said of Marshal Pétain, but the sight of once-young actors settling contentedly into middle age – with beer guts, turkey-necks, double chins, crow's feet and all – is a blessed thing to witness.
By way of example, I present you with the stars of It's Complicated. Miss Meryl Streep and Mr Alec Baldwin, she now 60, he a relative stripling of 51, yet joined in marriage, sundered by divorce and then reunited as adulterous exes-with-benefits in Nancy Meyer's sprightly (albeit slight) romcom for the underserved middle-aged moviegoing demographic.
Whatever the movie's virtues, it gives us time to see Baldwin heading up a film on the big screen for the first time since 30 Rock transformed his career and screen persona. Before Tina Fey...

Hollywood celebrated a merry Christmas with shattered box-office records! Moviegoers spent the weekend enjoying high-profile releases. The estimated $278 million box-office take broke the previous record of $253 million set in July 2008 when "The Dark Knight" was released.
For a while, at least on its opening day, "Sherlock Holmes" was poised to take the box-office crown earning a record Christmas day debut of $24.9 million.
But James Cameron's "Avatar" regained its audience over the weekend, topping the box office with merely a 3 percent drop from its opening weekend. The sci-fi flick earned $75 million for the No. 1 crown!
Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law must settle for the No. 2 spot. Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" opened with a very impressive $65.4 million box office take.
"Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" took in $50.2 million on the weekend, and $77.1 million since it opened Wednesday. Also opening strongly was "It's Complicated" starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin,...

Warner Bros.’ “Sherlock Holmes” couldn’t crack the case of the crowded Christmas boxoffice, outfoxed by Fox-distributed “Avatar” in its second weekend and the scifi actioner’s remarkable marketplace hold.
James Cameron’s motion capture-and-live action epic used positive word of mouth and premium ticket charges in 3D venues to concoct a nearly imperceptible 2% decline from week-earlier grosses, topping domestic rankings with an estimated $75 million for a 10-day cume of $212.3 million.
“Sherlock” started strongly Friday with an opening-day record of $24.8 million in Christmas green stuff, but the Robert Downey Jr. starrer lost a bit of its boxoffice shine on each of the subsequent two days for a still-impressive $65.4 million bow.
Fox’s animated feature “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel” debuted in third with $50.2 million and a $77.1 cume since unspooling Wednesday. Universal’s romantic comedy “It’s Complicated” – starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin – debuted in fourth with a stronger-than-expected $22.1 million.

All actresses should aspire to not only have Meryl Streep’s immeasurable talent, but her unstoppable career. Perhaps it’s her ability to play almost any role that elevates Streep as the exception to the rule of actresses’ struggling to remain relevant once they cross forty. It’s a cruel reality for actresses in Hollywood but Streep carries herself and her career like a woman a third her age. It’s with this in mind that she can play a woman defying the stereotype of the asexual post-menopausal woman by reigniting her sexuality in Nancy Meyer’s highly enjoyable new film, It’s Complicated. And while Streep is unsurprisingly fantastic, the best reason to see It’s Complicated is to watch Alec Baldwin give a performance that will give you another reason to lament his retirement from acting in 2012. Throw in Steve Martin playing a real character rather a cringe-worthy...

If you smoke even a single marijuana cigarette, the MPAA thinks you're a bad example and should not be viewed by children unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Nancy Meyer's It's Complicated, a romantic comedy starring Meryl Streep as a divorced woman who must decide between two suitors, one of them her architect (Steve Martin) and the other her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin), earned an R rating from the MPAA, despite an appeal by distributor Universal Studios. And it wasn't for profanity or nudity, but for "pot smoking with no bad consequences," according to sources cited by the Los Angeles Times. Total number of joints smoked: one.
When I first read that story, I thought that surely there were other factors involved; the MPAA site shows the rating for "some drug content and sexuality." Well, when I finally saw the film at an advance screening, I kept an...

In a recent interview with Men’s Journal [via Reuters], Alec Baldwin, currently one of the most (intentionally) funny men on television right now, says he’ll be retiring from acting after 2012. He’s pretty down on himself in the piece saying that his entire film acting career has been a failure. “I consider my entire movie career a complete failure,” he told Men’s Journal. “The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that.” I’m sorry that Baldwin uses that metric because he’s not only an insanely talented comedian, but when most people think of the film version of Glengarry Glen Ross, his single scene in the film immediately comes to mind. He also picked up a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance in 2003’s...

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are set to share the hosting duties at the 82nd Academy Awards. While Martin is a seasoned host, having performed in 2000 and 2002, this will be Baldwin's first time at the Oscars, although he is not unaccustomed to the spotlight as he is a fan favourite host on Saturday Night Live.
Baldwin and Martin are a fitting duo as they will soon be appearing on the big screen together, alongside Meryl Streep, in the upcoming Nancy Meyer film, It's Complicated. The co-hosts have taken over the duties from Hugh Jackman, who pulled out of the running last week. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will host the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. Last year's ceremony was successfully hosted by the vibrant Hugh Jackman who impressed immensely. This marks the third time Martin will be acting as host. The last time was back in 2003 which was anything but spectacular. The duo can be seen together in the upcoming Nancy Meyer's film "It's Complicated." Whether that title and their performance together will be referenced at the Oscars, remains to be seen.
