Sitcom stars in a procedural crime drama? Yes, why not? After all, it’s often joked in Hollywood that almost everyone worth their salt has appeared in a Law & Order episode.
5 actors from Modern Family who have starred in the Law & Order franchise are Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, their on-screen parents Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen, as well as Celia Weston. All of them have appeared in the long-running franchise between 2001 and 2024. So, it means it was anywhere from their pre- to post-Modern Family careers.
Also, these appearances spanned all across the Law & Order franchise, including Svu and Trial by Jury. It isn’t surprising that some of the biggest sitcom stars would also have starred in an episode (or more) of one of the most successful and long-running TV franchises. After all, it would have allowed them to flex their drama muscles and prove their versatility...

Chris Meloni will return to his alma mater, Law & Order: Svu, for the upcoming 27th season of the perennially popular procedural, the actor confirmed in a recent Instagram post.
“Hangin with friends on a Friday nite @therealmariskahargitay @dannflorek,” the Emmy-nominated actor wrote on social media alongside selfies of himself with fellow series vets Mariska Hargitay and Dann Florek.
Deadline’s sister publication TVLine first reported the news, which follows previous announcements of behind-the-scenes changes at the NBC juggernaut. In May, Deadline exclusively reported that Juliana Martinez and Octavio Pisano would not be returning to Svu as series regulars, and writer/executive producer Julie Martin and director/executive producer Norberto Barba would also be exiting the venerable drama. Additionally, Kelli Giddish is returning full-time, reprising her role as Amanda Rollins. And, viewers will get to see more of Captain Curry via Aimé Donna Kelly, who is being upped from...

Law & Order Thursday nights are so back. The Dick Wolf police procedurals return to NBC September 25. Law & Order will air alongside spin-offs Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as well as a first-time broadcast for Season 5 of Law & Order: Organized Crime, which initially aired exclusively on Peacock. Law & Order returns for a historic 25th season with Tony Goldwyn, Reid Scott, Hugh Dancy, Odelya Halevi, and Maura Tierney all expected to return. Not returning is Mechad Brooks, who played Detective Jalen Shaw. Season 24 left fans with a bombshell for Halevi's Ada Samantha Maroun as well as a crossroads for her and Dancy's Ada Nolan Price. Now, the pair have been spotted on set with production beginning last week.

Law & Order faces a major shakeup ahead of its landmark Season 25. Deadline reports that Mechad Brooks, who plays Detective Jalen Shaw, is exiting ahead of the upcoming season. Brooks starred as Detective Shaw for three seasons. Deadline reports that the "parting of ways" was mutual and Brooks is already "exploring other opportunities." Deadline confirms, however, that Tony Goldwyn, Reid Scott, Hugh Dancy, Odelya Halevi, and Maura Tierney, will return for the Dick Wolf police procedural's 25th season. Brooks' Detective Shaw replaced Anthony Anderson's Detective Kevin Bernad, and now there is a new vacancy at the 2-7 once again. Fans noticed Detective Shaw's quiet, minimal presence in the back-half of Season 24, with Detective Shaw not even in the crossover event with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
'Law & Order' Is Not the Only Show Facing Shake-Ups
It seems that most of the Dick Wolf procedurals are facing changes ahead of their respective seasons.

Captain Curry is here to stay. That's the news coming down from Wolf Entertainment. According to Deadline, Aimé Donna Kelly has been officially upped to a series regular role ahead of Law & Order: Special Victim Unit's historic Season 27. Kelly plays Captain Renee Curry on the long-running police procedural. The 27th Season will also feature the return of Kelli Giddish as Sgt. Amanda Rollins in a series regular role after departing in Season 24. Mariska Hargitay returns as Captain Olivia Benson and Ice-t as Sgt. Odafin "Fin" Tutuola — the two longest-serving regular cast members. Along with this shakeup ahead of the new season comes Svu's first-ever female showrunner, Michele Fazekas, who served as a writer and executive producer on the show from Seasons 3-7.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit wrapped up its twenty-sixth season only days ago — it has already been renewed for another run and is expected to return later this year. As previously reported, the new season will feature the return of fan-favorite Amanda Rollins, portrayed by Kelli Giddish, who exited as a series regular in Season 24 and has recurred since. Her anticipated return to Svu Season 27 will see her as a series regular once again, which co-star Mariska Hargitay recently reacted to, celebrating “an incredibly creative partner.”
Speaking to Deadline while discussing her new documentary, My Mom Jayne, about her mother, Jayne Mansfield, Hargitay, who portrays Captain Olivia Benson in Law & Order: Svu, didn't hesitate to voice her delight in Giddish’s return. She only had good words for her longtime friend, saying:

Kelli Giddish is coming back to “Law & Order: Svu” as a series regular in Season 27, Variety has confirmed.
Giddish originally joined “Svu” back in its 13th season as detective Amanda Rollins. She remained with the show as a main cast member until midway through Season 24. It was explained on the show that Rollins had married Ada Sonny Carisi Jr and then taken a teaching position.
She has made returns to the show since, however, first as a guest star in the Season 24 finale and popping up in episodes in both Season 25 and 26. This marks her return to full-time status with the series.
Giddish has also played Rollins in “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: Organized Crime” as well as fellow Dick Wolf shows “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.”
She is repped by Untitled Entertainment and Goodman Genow.
“Svu” was renewed for another season along with “Law & Order” earlier in May.

After two and a half years, Kelli Giddish is officially making a return to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as a series regular. Giddish's Amanda Rollins left mid-season 24, with the actress departing the show as a series regular. She'd made guest appearances over the last two and a half years, first returning as a friend, confidant, and professor and now as a sergeant with the intelligence division.
Deadline now confirms that Rollins will be back for the historic Season 27 as a series regular. There have been a series of shakeups ahead of the 27th Season. The series just lost two series regulars, Juliana Martinez and Octavio Pisano, as well as two executive producers: Julie Martin and Norberto Barba. What the show has gained, in addition to Giddish's return, is the first female showrunner in the series' history, with Michele Fazekas taking over as showrunner from David Graziano.

Exclusive: This is news Law Order: Svu fans — and series’ star/executive producer Mariska Hargitay — have been awaiting for two and a half years: Kelli Giddish is returning to the venerable NBC crime drama full-time, reprising her Amanda Rollins role as a series regular for its upcoming 27th season.
In one of the most talked about cast exits in Svu history — up there with original co-lead Christopher Meloni’s shocking 2011 departure — Giddish left as a series regular midway through Season 24 after Rollins married Ada Sonny Carisi Jr (Peter Scanavino) and left her Special Victims Unit detective job for a teaching career at Fordham University.
She never stayed away for long, returning in the Season 24 finale and appearing in two Season 25 episodes and five more this season. This will mark Giddish’s 15th season on the show overall.

It didn’t seem possible, especially given the budget cuts, but Law & Order: Svu Season 27 will finally bring Rollins back.
Rollins should never have been written out in the first place.
It’s been three long years and about a dozen guest appearances later, but Rollins will finally be back full-time.

There are more departures from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, headlined by Mariska Hargitay, this time behind the scenes. Writer/executive producer Julie Martin and director/executive producer Norberto Barba are leaving the executive producing team of the venerable NBC crime drama from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, which was just renewed for a record 27th season, sources tell Deadline. Barba will continue as a director, I hear.
Reps for NBC and Wolf Entertainment declined comment.
As Deadline reported exclusively earlier this month, recent Svu cast additions Juliana Martinez and Octavio Pisano also are leaving as series regulars after one and three seasons, respectively.
The changes come amid another round of tough renewals at the broadcast networks accompanied with cost-cutting mandates, including for all Wolf Entertainment dramas at NBC.
Additionally, Svu is undergoing a change at the helm, with Michele Fazekas joining as new showrunner, the first woman to run the veteran procedural.

NBC just delivered news that surprised no one, announcing the renewals of both Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu. As expected, the popular dramas will remain important pieces of the network’s primetime lineup.
Law & Order: Svu will return for season 27, while Law & Order was renewed for its 25th season. NBC didn’t confirm returning cast for either show, but it’s expected that Mariska Hargitay and Ice T will continue to lead the Svu cast. Unfortunately, Octavio Pisano (Det. Joe Velasco) and Juliana Aidén Martinez (Det. Kate Silva) will not be returning as series regulars. And the series will have a new showrunner when the new season begins production, with Michele Fazekas on board as the long-running drama’s first female showrunner.

The longest-running drama in American primetime history will continue to add to its record. The show that spawned it — and the second longest-running drama ever — is also set to return.
NBC has renewed Law & Order: Svu and Law & Order for the 2025-26 season. Svu will go into its 27th season in the fall, and the L&o mothership will enter its 25th season. Between them, the two shows will have 1,096 episodes to their credit at the end of this season.
The Law & Order renewals follow on the heels of NBC renewing all three of its Chicago series. Wolf Entertainment’s slate of NBC series will remain intact. Days after the network renewed the company’s three Chicago dramas, it has done the same for the two Law & Order ones, Law & Order: Svu and the mothership series.

“Law and Order: Svu” has tapped the first female showrunner in the NBC procedural’s long history.
Variety has confirmed with sources that Michele Fazekas has been named showrunner of the cop drama, having previously worked as a writer and co-executive producer on the series from 2001-2006. She takes over the top spot on the series from David Graziano, who has been the showrunner for the past three seasons.
Reps for NBC declined to comment.
“Law and Order: Svu” is currently airing its 26th season. It has not been formally renewed for Season 27 at this time, but is widely expected to be in the coming weeks.
Along with her longtime writing partner Tara Butters, Fazekas was most recently the co-showrunner on “The Boys” spinoff “Gen V” at Amazon. The second season of that show is currently in the works.
With Butters, Fazekas also created shows like “Emergence” and “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World.

Additionally, following the crossover event, Peacock’s “Law & Order: Organized Crime” will air its season premiere at 10 p.m. on NBC on Thursday, April 17. It’s temporarily taking Found’s timeslot, which will air on a special night, Monday, April 14 at 10 pm, then return to its usual Thursday 10 pm slot on April 24. Organized Crime will then shift to premiering all of its new episodes on Peacock.

Law & Order: Svu or Special Victims Unit worked on the perfect storylines to establish itself as a major fan-favorite in the crime drama genre, considering how it is still raging on the screens as one of the best television shows of all time, its 26th season underway as of this writing. But perhaps all this success wouldn’t have been possible had one major thing not been taken care of.

For one that had a titular group of specially trained detectives from the NYPD trying to solve crimes related to s-xual assault and harassment, this series had to take care of one very special element without which it would have risked itself to be doomed. This element was having women writers heading the project since most s-x crimes have women as their victims.

Law & Order: Svu alum Kelli Giddish enthusiastically addresses the chances of a spinoff focused on Amanda Rollins. Following her headline-grabbing exit from Svu during season 24, Giddish returned in a guest-starring capacity. Though she has a featured recurring role in the recently debuted season 26, the specifics of her storyline have led to questions about whether Rollins might lead her own spinoff.
Giddish addressed the possibility in an interview with Screen Rant's Rachel Foertsch, saying that she feels flattered that fans of her character are pushing for a spinoff. The actor does not discuss whether a Rollins-focused spinoff will happen, but she encourages people to "keep talking about it." Read the quote below:

There’s a new detective at Manhattan Svu.
Juliana Aidén Martinez has indefinitely joined the cast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, starring alongside Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson, Ice T’s Odafin Tutuola, Peter Scanavino’s Dominick Carisi, Octavio Pisano’s Joe Velasco and Kevin Kane’s Terry Bruno, who has been upped to season regular.
Martinez portrays Kate Silva, a former Brooklyn homicide detective whose father is the deputy police commissioner of the New York Police Department in the fictional world of the veteran Dick Wolf show. She was first introduced in the season 26 premiere and is already making strides within the squad.
Prior to landing the role of Kate, the actress starred alongside Sofía Vergara in Griselda. Her portrayal of the ground-breaking detective who brought down Griselda Blanco (aka the Cocaine Queen of Miami) garnered her an Imagen Award nomination for best supporting actress in a limited series.

From the original flagship Law & Order to its sister shows like Special Victims Unit, this is a franchise that is no stranger to a character exit. In fact, the Dick Wolf universe is often known for being a revolving door of actors and characters, with fans wary of growing too attached. For every mainstay character like Captain Olivia Benson, there are dozens who have had far shorter tenures in the fictionalized procedural world.
While many exits have been emotionally satisfying or thematically memorable, some have been less so. Catherine Manheim's recent exit as Kate Dixon on Law & Order was seemingly handled without much of a concluding story built around it. And while learning that Detective Elliot Stabler had left the show's Svu squad was certainly memorable, it was shoehorned in as a rushed, surprised explanation at the top of Season 13 and so never had a chance to be...

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Marisk Hargitay explains the impact of shooting the series' darkest scenes for so many years on end.
Speaking to Selena Gomez via Interview Magazine, Hargitay responded to the question of what it was like transitioning from shooting difficult, often emotionally taxing scenes to her daily life off set. "That's been a process," Hargitay explained. "When I started the show, I wasn't aware of how deeply it would go into me. My husband Peter is always like, anytime I go anywhere, my first question is, 'Whats the crime rate here?' So it's on the brain."

Law and Order Svu Spoilers: Looks like Kelli Giddish will be reprising her role as Amanda Rollins in season 26 of the hit NBC Series. Fans will be excited to know that after her exit in S24, her return for a guest appearance in S25 was well received.
Kelli Giddish – Set To Return To Law And Order Svu Season 26
She’ll even be teamed up with Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) again! But as ecstatic as we are, it seems that now Rollins’s role has changed within the force.
She no longer works with the Svu Unit so much as the NYPD Intelligence Unit, executive producer and Showrunner David Graziano explained that it “is very different from the Intelligence Unit anywhere else, because the Intelligence Unit in New York has cops stationed in almost every country in the world, and so, Rollins is going to be traveling a lot as part of that job.

Law & Order: Svu made a controversial casting move recently. The show let Kelli Giddish go in a cost-cutting measure and wrote Amanda Rollins out of the series. This didn’t go over well with some other cast members. Mariska Hargitay, who playes Olivia Benson, made it clear she wasn’t happy and wanted Giddish back.
For at least a short time, Hargitay gets her wish.

One of the three Law & Order shows currently on the air is in danger of getting canceled, but it may not be the end of the line if that happens. As it stands, the series is likely to move over to Peacock to continue on if its run at NBC is over.
Per Deadline, the spinoff series Law & Order: Organized Crime is still on the bubble at NBC. This may have fans of the series concerned, given how the network has already renewed both Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for additional seasons. NBC has also been doling out cancelations lately, giving the boot to shows like Quantum Leap and Magnum P.I., leaving it hard to know what might happen with Organized Crime.

It’s Svu’s groundbreaking 25th season, and there’s something special in the air. “This is a historic, unprecedented year and an amazing gift for the fans, especially those that have been with the show for so long,” promises co-showrunner Julie Martin, who has been with the drama since 2011. A lot is familiar in this landmark season as the Special Victims team tracks down the perps of heinous sex crimes and metes out the usual much-deserved justice. But within the tried-and-true formula, the episodes also delve into self-reflection, healing, and life-changing decisions. For instance, the third installment has a rare uplifting ending, when insecure dermatologist Vincent Prochik not only accepts that he was raped, but also goes undercover and triumphantly helps take down the culprits, thereby transforming himself. Capt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) really does the heavy lifting, however, as the savior of many abused victims finally gazes inward to try to save herself.

Dick Wolf is in for another busy season at NBC. No surprise here, the Peacock network has renewed “Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Svu” for the 2024-25 broadcast TV season. Among Dick Wolf scripted series, that leaves just “Law & Order: Organized Crime” on the bubble; a renewal for that show, which has experienced multiple showrunner changes in its short life, is still in discussion.
Among the shows, this will rep the 26th season of “Law & Order: SVU,” the 24th season of “Law & Order,” Season 13 for “Chicago Fire,” the 12th season for “Chicago PD” and the 10th season for “Chicago Med.” All of the renewed series are produced by Universal Studio Group’s Universal Television division, along with Wolf Entertainment, and all shows stream the following day on Peacock. NBC has renewed most — but not all — of the shows in its two biggest franchises for the 2024-25 season.

Thirty years after “Homicide: Life on the Street” hit the airwaves, a UK filmmaker and podcaster and a Baltimore camera assistant decided it was time to revisit the groundbreaking drama that garnered numerous awards during its seven seasons on NBC. Their new monthly behind-the-scenes podcast, Homicide: Life on the Set, premieres in March, focusing on creators and crew, including engaging conversations with camera, lighting and sound techs, creators, writers, actors, directors and more, including Jean de Segonzac, Tom Fontana and Kyle Secor.
“In early 2023, I started researching and developing a concept for a UK-based police film,” filmmaker Chris Carr said. “Always a huge fan of ‘Homicide,’ especially its gritty, cinéma-vérité shooting style, I started looking for a camera crew member to interview about how the show was shot. Susan Ingram, a camera assistant, agreed to talk with me and that’s how we got cracking.”

Andre Braugher, the two-time Emmy winner who died this week at the age of 61, was an unknown when the hardboiled NBC detective drama “Homicide: Life on the Street” debuted in the coveted post-Super Bowl time slot on Jan. 31, 1993. He left the series six years later as an in-demand leading man who went on to star in TV series include FX’s “Thief,” TNT’s “Men of a Certain Age,” Fox/NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine Nine,” in addition to many other prominent roles.
But it started with his years on “Homicide.” Braugher played Detective Frank Pembleton, one of the most unforgettable characters that television has ever produced, thanks to the brilliance of executive producers Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson and Jim Finnerty and a murderers row of a writers room. The stellar supporting cast alongside included Ned Beatty, Melissa Leo and Yaphet Kotto.

Kelli Giddish’s former Detective Amanda Rollins will return for the Season 25 premiere of Law & Order: Svu, sources confirm to Deadline.
Giddish exited the series midway through Season 24 and last appeared in a guest-starring role in the Season 24 finale, which was part of a three-way crossover among Law & Order, Svu and Organized Crime. In that episode, Giddish’s character Rollins married Ada Sonny Carisi Jr (Peter Scanavino). Rollins also revealed she was on a new career path and had accepted a teaching job at Fordham University. When she returned, she surprised her former colleagues with news that she was pregnant.
Law & Order: Svu resumed production on Season 25 Monday following a six-month production shutdown due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life,” she posted on social media last year announcing her exit. “I’ve been...

The Writers Guild of America East is petitioning employers to ensure that protections are in place for journalists as AI technology develops.
The petition, signed by more than 1,000 members, calls for “immediate, good faith negotiations on AI,” including outside of scheduled contract bargaining, as well as “a guarantee that AI protections will be on the table in future bargaining.”
The petition also calls on employers to “publicly commit to never replacing a human worker with an AI tool,” something that has been a big concern among journalists, as well as film and TV writers in their recent strike.
President Joe Biden issued an executive order to try to establish protections for safety and security around AI, as well as an effort to mitigate its displacement of workers. But the labor provisions are limited to creating a set of best practices and principles, as further steps to preserve jobs likely would take congressional action.

“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star and producer Mariska Hargitay paid tribute to her late co-star Richard Belzer Thursday, days after his death on Feb. 19 at the age of 78.
“He was family and taught me so much about taking risks and creativity and trust and he brought so much joy to the set,” Hargitay said while speaking with Savannah Guthrie during an appearance on “Today.”
“Boy, did this man loves children. He was this acerbic, quick-witted, brilliant mind and yet he would melt in the sight of a child. He was [so] beautiful and complex and it was such a privilege to know him,” Hargitay gushed.
Belzer left “Svu” in 2016. The cause of death is currently unknown.
