Judd Apatow Reveals How Steve Carell's 'Anchorman' Role Inspired 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'
Image
Judd Apatow is looking back on how Steve Carell‘s hilarious turn in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy helped launch one of his biggest movies.

During an appearance on The Lamorning After Podcast, the comedy filmmaker revealed that Steve’s scene-stealing work as Brick Tamland directly inspired The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

“Carell was so funny that it was blowing everyone’s mind,” he said.

“It was this thing where everyone was killing it, but people were especially shocked at how riotous Steve was being all day with these crazy improvs. And it was just something magical happening with Carell doing Brick.”

Keep reading to find out more…

At the time, Judd was known for spotting and elevating rising talent, like Jason Segel in Knocked Up before Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Seth Rogen in The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Judd approached Steve to see if he had any ideas for a lead role.

The 15 Worst Movies On Amazon Prime Video, Ranked
Image
There are tens of thousands of movies available on Amazon Prime Video, and, when you're talking about such an ample offering of titles, it's statistically inevitable that a few dozens or hundreds of them will be less than stellar. But what are the absolute worst movies you can cue up on Prime Video right now?

To answer that question, we've carefully scoured the streaming service's U.S. catalog to find the most dreadful, obscene, unwatchable garbage currently floating about in it. A vanishing few of these are at least entertaining for their ridiculous trashiness, but, for the most part, these are movies that will most likely either bore you to death or send you into a stunned, horrified stupor, with that likelihood increasing exponentially as you move down the ranking. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Harrison Ford Had Two Inappropriate Words After Watching A Classic Jason Segel Movie
Image
Harrison Ford has had a career unlike anyone else. If you look at just the impact of his roles in the "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" film series alone, that would be enough to make anyone a legend. Ford, however, was also able to build up an impressive filmography outside of that, although he went decades without working in television after appearing in the disastrous "Star Wars Holiday Special" in 1978. It seems that experience was so traumatizing for Ford that, outside of playing a minor role in "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," he didn't really act on TV until the premiere of Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" prequel show "1923" in 2022.

So, when the crew behind the celebrated Apple TV+ series "Shrinking" put Ford at the top of their list to play the role of a mentor figure to co-creator and star Jason Segel's grieving therapist, Segel and co-creators Bill Lawrence...

Ben Affleck Broke Age Old Hollywood Tradition For Full-frontal ‘Gone Girl’ Scene Only For It To Be “overlooked”
Image
When Gone Girl hit theaters in 2014, most of the attention centered on Rosamund Pike’s spine-chilling performance and the film’s toe-curling plot twist. Buried deep amidst the film’s chaos was a blink-and-you-miss-it moment from Ben Affleck that quietly broke a long-standing Hollywood taboo/rule. Do you remember?.

In case you can’t, let us jog your memory, in a quick shower scene for Gone Girl, Affleck went full frontal, in short, challenging the industry that normalized female nudity but kept its leading men all cozy and covered. What’s more surprising is that no one talked about it, leaving the actor’s efforts to break tradition swept under the carpet.

10 Celebrities You Forgot Had Cameos in Famous Movies
Image
Ever rewatched a movie and spotted a familiar face for a second that you completely forgot or completely ignored because you hadn’t even noticed them earlier? Well, just as a long cameo contributes to the story of the movie, sometimes these unnoticeable cameos can also contribute by becoming a topic of discussion later, making us rewatch the movies to spot the celebs.

Cameos are often like hidden Easter eggs, and sometimes they can uplift the mood of viewers if they are carefully dropped at some dull moments of the movies. Sometimes, even Hollywood’s A-listers pop up in roles so subtly or in a disguise that fans completely forget they were there, especially when so much is happening on the screen. Let’s take a look at some of these cameos that people almost forgot over the years.

The actor, who brought Marshall to life on all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother, opened up about his film career taking off as he was starring in the show and trying to find a good balance. Warner Bros. Discovery has agreed to provide outtakes from the 2011 film Arthur as part of a civil sexual assault case involving comedian Russell Brand. The lawsuit, filed in 2023 by a woman identified as Jane Doe, accuses Brand of exposing himself and sexually assaulting her on set.

The footage, which may amount to eight hours, was mentioned during a recent New York Supreme Court hearing. Patrick Lamparello, an attorney representing Warner Bros., told the court that the company was willing to release this previously unseen material in connection with the ongoing case. Brand and Warner Bros. have both denied the allegations.

In the lawsuit, Doe alleges that Brand exposed himself to cast members and later followed her into a bathroom where he sexually assaulted her while a crew member stood outside the door. Brand has denied the accusations, with his legal team arguing that the claims are false.

“I was struck enough to send him a brief note”: Jason Segel’s Nude Scenes in a $105 Million Film Made Harrison Ford Send Him an Nsfw Note
Image
Jason Segel is best known for his role as the adorable boyfriend Marshall Eriksen in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. While he has been a household name because of the show, he finally got his feature film breakthrough with the comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall (last name not related to Himym). He also wrote the script for the film.

One of the most iconic scenes in the comedy is his fully frontal n*de scene at the beginning of the film. Segel’s scene reportedly caught the attention of actor Harrison Ford when he was offered the role in Shrinking. Ford mentioned that he even sent Segel a note after watching his n*de scene in the film.

“One of the worst movies…”: Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell’s ‘You’re Cordially Invited’ Deals Another Disastrous Blow to Rom-Coms
Image
There’s a reason why romantic comedy films are called a thing of the past, and to try to revive the genre in this age of modern cinema may seem like a futile move, especially with Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell’s latest project, You’re Cordially Invited. It failed to make a good impression even with the star power of two of the biggest names in Hollywood.

Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon in You’re Cordially Invited / Credits: Prime Video

Now, if A-listers like Witherspoon and Ferrell could not save Nicholas Stoller’s movie, then how could other actors breathe new life to the supposed long-dead genre? The film immensely disappointed fans and they blamed its mediocre plot and unlikable characters.

You’re Cordially Invited is another unsuccessful attempt at reviving the rom-com genre

You’re Cordially Invited Review: Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon clash in this muted wedding comedy
Image
Plot: When two weddings are accidentally booked on the same day at the same venue, each bridal party is challenged with preserving their family’s special moment. In a hilarious battle of determination, the father of the bride and sister of the other bride chaotically go head-to-head as they stop at nothing to uphold an unforgettable celebration for their loved ones.

Review: Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon clashing over competing weddings at the same venue on the same day sounds fun. Even the initial trailer for You’re Cordially Invited gave me some hope that the Nicholas Stoller-directed comedy would give us a one-two punch of actors to root for as they try to undermine one another. With Stoller responsible for some of the funniest romantic comedies of the last decades, including directing Forgetting Sarah Marshall and writing The Muppets, I remained hopeful that this movie would turn out to...

The last truly funny, downright gut-busting, Will Ferrell performance was The Other Guys. But ever since Ferrell played off against Mark Wahlberg as a pair of pencil-pushing cops...

Will Ferrell Talks Balancing Heart and Humor With Reese Witherspoon in ‘You’re Cordially Invited’
Image
Amazon Prime Video‘s newest dream team, Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon, have teased audiences with what to expect from their upcoming comedy You’re Cordially Invited.

Launching on the streamer worldwide Jan. 30, the movie from writer-director Nicholas Stoller follows Jim (Ferrell) overseeing his daughter’s wedding and Margot (Witherspoon) her younger sister’s. But things go more than awry when the ceremonies are accidentally double-booked into the same — and intimate — wedding venue on an Atlanta island.

“You can expect a rollercoaster ride,” said the comedy king, who was most recently the subject of a Netflix road-trip documentary with long-time friend Harper Steele. Ferrell spoke alongside his new co-star Witherspoon at a London preview of the film Thursday night. “Nick here came up with an amazing premise and in some ways, it feels quite familiar.”

“There are a lot of wedding movies,” he continued, “but this was just really interesting and...

The 10 Most Intriguing Film Comedies of 2025

How funny is 2025 going to be?

Last year wasn’t great for comedies, with movies like The Fall Guy and If failing at the box office. Could 2025 be a rebound? It’s possible, which inspired me to put together a list of the 10 comedies I’m most intrigued to see this year. Some are much-awaited sequels to beloved movies. Others are daring swings by acclaimed indie directors. And one of them features Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd at odds. Clearly, there’s something for everyone in 2025.

I organized my picks by release date, putting movies that don’t yet have a fixed spot on the calendar at the end in alphabetical order. But, as always, it’s a roll of the dice when you’re putting together a guide like this. I haven’t seen any of these movies, so I’m really just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

Saturday Night Live's cold open turns into a comedy reunion fest
Image
Nothing brings out the stars quite like a Saturday Night Live Five Timers Club meeting. So when Martin Short joined the club this week, SNL put together one reunion after another as a parade of cameos came out to celebrate.

Short, a former cast member, finally joined the illustrious club this weekend. He first hosted in 1986 and has become SNL's "Mr. December" as each hosting turn has come during the holiday month.

The combination of Short's fifth time hosting, the Christmas episode, and this being SNL's 50th season created the perfect recipe for cameos. And SNL over-delivered in the cold open and in the process, organized several TV and movie reunions for fans to enjoy. In no particular order...

Paul Rudd and Martin Short represented Only Murders in the Building. While everyone (including us here at Last Night On) expected Steve Martin to show up, Martin Short quickly nixed those expectations.

A Crying Jason Segel Weirded Out the Muppet Performers
Image
While Muppet fans are currently mad as Hell at Disney for scrapping the beloved Muppet Vision 3D theme park attraction, there was once a time when the Mouse House put a fair bit of attention and effort into celebrating the iconic felt characters they now own.

Most notably in 2011, the studio released The Muppets, a big-screen reboot that found Kermit, Fozzie, Gonzo and the gang (plus some human beings) teaming up to save Muppet Studios from an evil oil tycoon. It remains to be seen whether or not we’ll get a sequel in which the Muppets put on a big show to save their offices from the clutches of John Mayer and McG.

One of the film’s human cast members was Freaks and Geeks star Jason Segel, who also co-wrote the screenplay with frequent collaborator Nicholas Stoller. Segel was already a massive Muppet fan, as evidenced by the...

Will Ferrell to bang the gavel for a TV courtroom comedy in the Nicholas Stoller-directed Judgement Day

Move over, Judge Judy. There’s a new gavel-smasher in town, and his name is Will Ferrell! The former Saturday Night Live star and comedy mastermind is reuniting with Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Neighbors, and Bros director Nicholas Stoller for Judgement Day, a TV courtroom comedy in development at Amazon MGM Studios.

If you’re like, ‘Wait. When did Ferrell and Stoller work together?’ The duo teamed up for You’re Cordially Invited, a wedding dramedy starring Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon. Yes, Bill Hader Was A Writer On South Park How He Got The Gig, Explained
Image
Notable funnyman Bill Hader has had an incredible career in movies and television as an actor, director, and writer, though even big fans of his might not know he was also a member of the South Park writing staff. Most people probably know Bill Hader best for his years on SNL, an eight-season run that resulted in some of the show's most iconic characters, including Stefon and Anthony Peter Coleman. Hader's post-SNL career has been arguably more impressive, with his shows Barry and Documentary Now! earning rave reviews.

Even during his time on SNL, Hader was expanding his horizons, dabbling in movies and TV shows outside the purview of NBC. During his time on the show, he was also consulting on the hit animated series South Park. South Park needs little introduction. The Comedy Central show premiered in 1997 and has remained one of the most important cultural touchstones and...

Prosecutors Asked To Consider Criminal Charges Against Russell Brand
Image
Police detectives investigating Russell Brand regarding historic allegations of sex crimes have asked prosecutors to consider bringing criminal charges against the media personality, according to BBC.

The decision by law enforcement stems from a September 2023 investigative report by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches, which includes testimony from four women who accused the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor of sexual assault, rape and emotional abuse across a seven-year period at the height of his fame in 2006-2013. One of the women, none of whom know each other and the majority of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity, was 16 at the time of the offense. While Brand has denied the allegations, the women said they felt compelled to speak up given the former presenter’s newfound platform as a right-wing evangelical influencer, who is currently selling a $240 “magical amulet” that wards off Wi-Fi and other “evil energies.”

Jason Segel says being called “weird” by Judd Apatow changed his life and goals
Image
You could pretty much call any adult who sings with puppets to be strange, but Jason Segel has run with it, once being called “weird” and making a career of it. And judging by Forgetting Sarah Marshall, he’s more man than muppet…

Appearing on Today (with Entertainment Weekly), Jason Segel remembered his time working with Judd Apatow initially on Freaks and Geeks, in which he played Rush-loving drummer Andopolis. It was here that Segel – like so many – was taken in by Apatow, who provided the budding actor with advice that would change his course. “It was a bit of an apprenticeship period, where we literally learned how to write a script. And his parting words to me were, ‘Listen, Jace, you’re a weird dude. The only way you’re going to make it is if you write your own material.’ He was right, and it changed my life.

Created by Ted Lasso‘s team, Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence, along with Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), the Apple TV+ dramedy Shrinking won over the hearts of audiences with its star-studded cast, led by Segel and Harrison Ford. The show’s second season offers more hilarity and moments of tremendous emotional heft, allowing its cast to deliver career-best work.

Shrinking Season 2 Review

Shrinking continues many of the storylines from the first season, following therapist Jimmy (Segel) and his friends and family as they try to deal with their problems, grieving and trying to move on — often to comedic results. There are a lot of characters in this show, and while many shows with large ensembles like this frequently struggle to keep viewers invested, season 2 of Shrinking does so effortlessly.

Kristen Bells $100M Judd Apatow Comedy Movie From 16 Years Ago Finally Has A Worthy Follow-Up
Image
Kristen Bell has a deep history with the romantic comedy genre, and she has finally made a worthy follow-up to one of her best movies with Netflix's Nobody Wants This. Bell began her career in the late 90s and early 2000s, but it was not until 2008 that she landed one of her breakout roles. This was in the romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, wherein Bell plays the eponymous ex-girlfriend. In the movie, a man named Peter takes off to Hawaii after a tragic breakup with his girlfriend, Sarah.

After Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bell acted in several more romantic comedy films, including Serious Moonlight, Couples Retreat, When in Rome, and You Again. While this trend helped establish the actors strength in this genre, she spent many years never really making a rom-com movie that was as great as Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This has changed, as Bell finally has the perfect follow-up to her 2008 film,...

Nobody Wants This Cast & Character Guide
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Nobody Wants This.

Netflix's Nobody Wants This includes a stellar cast of well-established actors and comedians who help bring the characters in this hilarious star-crossed lovers story to life. Sarah Marshall: Kirks Girlfriend In Star Trek Tos The Deadly Years Explained
Image
Sarah Marshall portrayed Janet Wallace, one of Captain Kirk's old flames, in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 11, "The Deadly Years" Sarah Marshall's character helped Doctor McCoy cure the crew's rapid aging virus and save the day. Alice Eve's character in Star Trek into Darkness adopted the name Carol Wallace as a nod to Sarah Marshall.

Sarah Marshall played Janet Wallace, one of the many girlfriends of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) in Star Trek: The Original Series. While Kirk had multiple romances during Tos, his five-year mission also brought him into contact with a few old flames. For example, Kirk's ex, Janice Lester (Sandra Smith), was the primary antagonist in "Turnabout Intruder", the final episode before Star Trek was canceled in 1969. Sarah Marshall's Janet Wallace was another of Kirk's old flames, but she came aboard the USS Enterprise to help its captain, not hinder him.

The Must-List: Seven Films About Summer Vacations Gone Off the Rails
Olivia Colman at an event for The Oscars (2019)
From Olivia Colman’s fraught sojourn to the Greek Isles in The Lost Daughter to Jessie Buckley’s terrifying trip up the M5 to the English countryside in Men and M. Night’s bummer beaches in Old, taking a little “me time” away from home is often the single biggest mistake any movie character could possibly make. Horror, psychological drama, comedy, mystery, rom-com. The genre hardly matters. In film, the simple act of taking a vacation is rarely the relaxing, restorative interlude one hopes that it might be, placing uneasy personalities in uncertain—even harrowing—circumstances.

So with another holiday weekend upon us and the summer theoretically in full swing, it’s time to make peace with travel advisories being a moving target and hot spots foreign and domestic getting hotter by the minute. No surprise then, that many of us now eye these “escapes” with more than a little bit of skepticism.

The Way 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' Treats Sarah Marshall Is Not Okay
Image
Though Forgetting Sarah Marshall is one of the best rom-coms of the past two decades, it nevertheless has one major flaw the way it overtly villainizes the titular character. Ditching the schmaltz often associated with the genre and trading it in for genuine human emotion and a healthy dose of raunchiness, Forgetting Sarah Marshall was a breath of fresh air when it came out in 2008 and remains as such over fifteen years later. Nevertheless, the movie has a bone to pick with Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), making no attempts to properly tell her side of the story. Her actions in the film are painful, but the extreme one-sidedness of the story makes it difficult to accept the film's final conclusion, which can ultimately be summarized by saying "Sure, Peter had an equal part to play in the demise of his relationship with Sarah, but he deserves happiness whereas Sarah deserves...

One Twilight Zone Episode Inspired A Horror Classic – And One Very Annoyed Writer
Image
The last 70 years of science fiction, horror, and fantasy wouldn't just look remarkably different without the works of Richard Matheson, they'd be comparatively barren. Okay, this is a touch hyperbolic, but only a touch! Yes, we'd still have the transporting, thought-provoking works of maestros like Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, and so many others, but could you imagine living in a world sans such essential tales as "The Incredible Shrinking Man," "I Am Legend," "Hell House," and dozens upon dozens of eerily prescient (or just straight up horrifying) short stories? And these weren't just spellbinding reads. They formed the basis for many memorable movies, and, perhaps most influentially, 16 unforgettable episodes of "The Twilight Zone."

Countless writers and filmmakers have cited Matheson as crucial to their development as genre storytellers (Stephen King considers "Hell House" to be "the scariest haunted house novel ever written"), and you could argue that...

David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will produce for Skydance, alongside Kunis for her Orchard Farm Productions, and Ruben Fleischer. Orchard Farm’s Lisa Sterbakov will serve as executive producer, with Carin Sage overseeing the project for Skydance.

No stranger to big screen romance, Kunis has previously showcased her chops in the genre as the lead of titles like Friends with Benefits and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Other notable film credits include the addiction drama Four Good Days, action comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me,...

Jeanie Finlay Top Ten Feature Films of 2023
Image
2023 has been one of the most professionally exhilarating years of my life but also one of the hardest. I have been affected deeply by losing Tom Butchart suddenly in June, the childhood friend “the keeper of sacred knowledge and provider of affordable dreams” that I made Sound It Out (my 2011 film) about. We also lost my mother-in-law Pat and documentary titan Jess Search. The impact of these deaths have intertwined with hugely positive experiences that I could never have predicted, leaving me a little discombobulated, determined to live with boldness, albeit with a twinge of melancholy.

In February I received the Chicken & Egg Award, which is given to eight established filmmakers from marginalised genders a year. The recipients form a cohort, are given mentorship, and an unrestricted prize. I spent some of my award going out to New Mexico to experiment with the arts lab at the University of New Mexico...

10 Realistic Movie Portrayals Of Characters Going Through Breakups
Image
Films can provide comfort by normalizing the turmoil of breakups and tapping into relatable emotions like grief, vulnerability, and adjustment. Some movies gloss over the nuances of breakup pain, confusion, and healing, focusing more on nostalgia and lost love rather than the path towards healing. Certain films authentically capture the mourning and recalibration that come with a breakup, offering viewers fresh models for processing their own struggles and providing commiseration and hope.

Movies have depicted breakups for years, but very rarely are they portrayed realistically. Films are meant to reflect real life, so occasionally it is cathartic to see a beloved character experience common human trials like the dissolution of a relationship. By tapping into relatable emotions like grief, vulnerability, and adjustment, movies can comfort viewers going through similar breakups by normalizing the turmoil. However, many movie breakups gloss over the nuances of the pain, confusion, and gradual healing that...

Movie Love Stories That Blossomed From Casual Dates
Image
It’s a classic rom-com trope. A couple gets together for a casual hookup with little sign of chemistry, sometimes outright friction, and hostility. They find they fail to agree on anything, and their personalities clash. Eventually, after a seemingly never-ending rollercoaster of ups and downs, they find their feelings for each other altering. They’re both struck by Cupid’s arrow! These stories may have emanated from some screenwriter’s imagination, but there’s a reason for plots consistently flowing along these lines. Romantic movies are avidly watched because they reflect reality – audiences can’t get enough stories about casual affairs gaining momentum, and blossoming into a stronger bond. Films are also reflecting the reality of so many singles these days, whose default method of looking for hook up opportunities is to rely on online apps or websites. On these virtual platforms, they’ll be guaranteed access to a treasure trove of talent,...

When Burger King Intentionally Spoiled a Star Wars Movie
Image
There’s no such thing as bad publicity… or at least, that’s how the saying goes. How successfully it withstands examination is another matter, but that hasn’t stopped companies from deploying questionable advertising campaigns for the sake of short-term profits. Forgetting Sarah Marshall's disturbing billboards that saw dozens of real Sarah Marshalls receiving an influx of unwanted attention. Perhaps the wildest example comes via the restaurant chain Burger King whose German branch once launched a sales campaign based around spoilers for the then-upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It didn’t take long before these leaks flooded the internet, briefly making the fast-food joint Public Enemy No. 1 to both the Star Wars fanbase and the exceedingly powerful Disney Corporation. It was a strategy fraught with risk, but given how much it raised the company’s profile, it was arguably a complete victory.
