'Doctor Odyssey' Canceled After One Season at ABC
Image
Ryan Murphy has created and produced some of the most popular television series. He just has an eye for what viewers prefer to watch with his credits including Glee, American Horror Story, Pose, 9-1-1, and The Watcher. Murphy is not slowing down, either. In 2024, ABC's Doctor Odyssey was added to the writer's list of productions. While doctors aboard a luxury cruise caught the attention, it seems not to have had the level of interest to convince ABC to renew it.

Who wouldn't want to tune in to watch highly skilled doctors on a luxury cruise handling medical cases far away from the nearest shore? Within its 18 episodes, there was no shortage of drama and cases for Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) and his team. However, there seemed to be a shortage in ABC's interest to renew the series, as the network decided to cancel it instead. According to Variety, fans...

10 Old-School Sitcoms That Are Still Awesome Today
Image
From the beginning of the history of the television medium, situational comedies have been an integral part of the popularization of the technology. Sitcoms have existed across the entire history of TV, and still continue to capture audiences through popular series like Abbott Elementary, George & Mandy's First Marriage and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Some of the best sitcoms of all time are part of the first few decades of television, series that continue to hold up to this day. Old-school sitcoms capture the comedy styles of the decades that they were produced in, but the classic format of the genre makes all of them easy for modern audiences to dive straight into.

The Bob Newhart Show Featured a Classic Comedian's Dry Style

Over the history of the sitcom, many of the most classic series have centered around a titular character played by a nationally renowned comedian, with series like...

Clint Eastwood's Kelly's Heroes Takes Inspiration from the Western Genre
Image
With the exception of John Wayne, no other actor is more synonymous with the Western than Clint Eastwood. In fact, even in films that aren't part of the Western genre that Eastwood takes part in, audiences still find themselves reveling in the persona that the actor established in films such as The Outlaw Josey Wales and A Fistful of Dollars. Nowhere was this more apparent than in Kelly's Heroes. Released in 1970 and featuring a stacked cast that saw Eastwood star alongside Donald Sutherland, Tully Savalas, Don Rickles, Gavin MacLeod, and Carol O'Connor, Kelly's Heroes is a boisterous action-packed heist film set during the Second World War.

The plot, which involves Private Kelly (Eastwood) leading a rag-tag group of individuals behind enemy lines to steal a cache of gold, might sound familiar if you're a fan of many Western films. In fact, Kelly's Heroes is best described as a "World War II Western,...

Fans of ABC's Doctor Odyssey Should Check Out This Influential 1970s Sitcom
Image
Ryan Murphy may be a contentious figure, but his legacy is undeniable. His massive output has earned him plenty of acclaim — and some criticism. Even so, one of his latest works, Doctor Odyssey, is making big waves on ABC. It has all those recognizable Murphy hallmarks. There’s plenty of drama, more than enough innuendo, and a healthy heap of romance. These spices are tempered by the show’s playful comedy and (mostly) lighthearted tone. After some clever mixing, the results are wrapped in the sort of over-the-top scenarios that made Murphy’s 9-1-1 so compelling.

Knowing all that, it’s not hard to see why Doctor Odyssey fans are begging for more. The show’s September 2024 debut was ABC’s highest-rated premiere in four years, and Murphy’s narrative has some serious staying power. However, there’s not much to see — not yet, at least. So, what can fans do while they wait?...

Mitzi Gaynor, Star of ‘South Pacific,’ Dies at 93
Image
Mitzi Gaynor, star of 1950s big-screen musicals including “South Pacific” and “Les Girls” and a series of beloved variety specials in the 1970s, died on Thursday. She was 93.

Gaynor’s management team, Rene Reyes and Shane Rosamonda, confirmed to Variety that she died of natural causes.

“For eight decades she entertained audiences in films, on television and on the stage. She truly enjoyed every moment of her professional career and the great privilege of being an entertainer,” Reyes and Rosamonda wrote in a statement on Gaynor’s X account. “Off stage, she was a vibrant and extraordinary woman, a caring and loyal friend, and a warm, gracious, very funny and altogether glorious human being.”

Gaynor starred as Navy nurse Nellie Forbush in the 1958 big-screen adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific” together with Rossano Brazzi as French planter Emile De Becque and John Kerr as Lt. Cable. Gaynor sang...

Doctor Odyssey is This Generations The Love Boat
Image
Its exciting and new. Come and join us. Were expecting you. Anyone who grew up in the 70s or 80s, or who loves retro TV, will recognize those words as lyrics from the iconic theme song to the romantic comedy-drama The Love Boat. The ABC series, which aired for nine seasons from 1977 through 1986 along with several special episodes, hailed from Aaron Spelling, the powerhouse behind iconic shows like Beverly Hills, 90210, Dynasty, and Melrose Place. And it was a massive success. Ryan Murphy, arguably this generations Spelling, may have drawn inspiration from this series for his latest hit. Doctor Odyssey is a medical drama that takes the procedural format to the open seas.

The main similarity between these two shows is, of course, that they both take place on the water via cruise ship. But its difficult not to draw other comparisons. In fact, Doctor Odyssey is a modern-day version of The Love Boat.

The 10 Best Donna Dixon Movies & TV Shows Ranked
Image
Donna Dixon was a staple of 1980s comedies, frequently appearing alongside her husband, Dan Aykroyd, in some of the decade's classics. Dixon began her career as a model, winning Miss Virginia USA in 1976 and competing in both Miss USA 1976 and Miss World USA 1977 (via 2Paragraphs). She began her acting career in 1980, with a starring role in the early Tom Hanks vehicle Bosom Buddies. Her Miss USA looks, and modeling background naturally had Dixon cast as romantic leads or girls next door, but that belied her real talent as a multidimensional actor.

In her first film, Doctor Detroit, Dixon met Dan Aykroyd, and the pair married that same year. The ever-funny Dan Aykroyd and the charming Dixon made a great pair in the next three films they made together. They also had three children together; Danielle, Belle, and Stella. In April 2022, after 39 years of marriage, Dixon and Aykroyd announced they would be separating,...

Miss The Love Boat? Don Johnson's New Drama Is The Perfect Contemporary Remake Of The Romantic Show
Image
Romance will return to the high seas in Don Johnson's new drama, Doctor Odyssey, and it's the perfect contemporary oceanic romance for those who loved The Love Boat. An iconic 1970s sitcom show, The Love Boat, aired for 10 seasons from 1977 to 1986 on ABC. The romantic comedy series by Wilford Lloyd Baumes sailed away long ago, but actors like Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, and Ted Lange forged a spot in the hearts of many for romance set aboard a cruise ship on the open seas. Don Johnson will return the premise to ABC on Thursday nights in the fall.

Doctor Odyssey will premiere on ABC on September 26.

Another up-and-coming Ryan Murphy show, Doctor Odyssey will offer plenty of modern twists that up the stakes for offshore romance. ABC released the medical drama's official season 1 teaser ahead of the series debut on September 26. The official teaser promises glamorous landscapes and characters...

‘The Love Boat’: 33 Oscar-Winning Guest Stars
Image
Has any entertainment scripted project ever featured more Oscar winners? Tour our special Valentine’s Day photo gallery to see which 33 Academy Awards champs made appearances on the very popular Aaron Spelling show “The Love Boat.”

For one full decade of 1977 to 1987, ABC could count on its comedy/drama series “The Love Boat” to bring in millions of audience members on Saturday nights. The show would have multiple story arcs (often three for a one-hour episode) with five to 10 celebrity guest stars each time. Some arcs were playing out for laughs, others for romance and the remainder could take on tough issues. The show airs daily on the Decades network and on Sunday afternoons for Me-tv. Fred Grandy, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Gavin MacLeod, and Lauren Tewes in La croisière s'amuse (1977)
At The Time, ‘The Love Boat’ Was Exciting & New
Fred Grandy, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Gavin MacLeod, and Lauren Tewes in La croisière s'amuse (1977)
The Love Boat was a show that felt like it could only come from the 1970s. With its endless list of guest stars, drawn from a pool of career TV actors and semi-retired movie stars, the anthology series was as comfortable to most people as it was kitschy. Of course, there was also the show’s regular cast — the ship’s crew — who served to tie all of the stories together, along with a few subplots of their own. The ship’s genial Captain Stubing was, of course, played by the late Gavin MacLeod, and Jill Whelan co-starred as the captain’s daughter. Years ago, we spoke to MacLeod and Whelan, who told us why they thought the show lasted as long as it did — through nine seasons and a series of reunion films. https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Love-Boat1.mp3

How ‘The Real Love Boat’ Paid Tribute to Original Show in Premiere (Recap)
The Real Love Boat (2022)
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Real Love Boat series premiere.] Love, exciting and new. The Real Love Boat premiered Wednesday, October 5 on CBS, bringing a fresh twist to the reality dating genre as it’s set on a cruise ship. Like the scripted show it’s based on, The Real Love Boat aims to bring singles together to find love. The dating show’s premiere paid tribute to ABC‘s The Love Boat in simple, recognizable ways. For starters, hosts/real-life couple Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn covered The Love Boat theme song for the new reality show. The rest of The Love Boat references are found in the dating program’s format. The new series pays homage to three of The Love Boat‘s staple characters — ship captain Merrill Stubing (Gavin MacLeod), bartender Isaac Washington (Ted Lange), and cruise director Julie McCoy (Lauren Tewes) — in its crew. Oscars 2022 ‘In Memoriam’: Winners Sidney Poitier, Olympia Dukakis, William Hurt to be honored along with who else?

Who will be included for the special “In Memoriam” segment for Sunday night’s Oscars 2022 ceremony? For almost all other Academy Awards productions since the 1990s, producers typically select 40-50 people from the various branches. The 2021 segment had close to 100 people in a particularly fast-paced three minutes that was not very well-received since many of them were only on screen for a second or two.

‘The Love Boat’ Getting Reality TV Reboot on U.S. and Australian TV
Image
“The Love Boat” soon will be making another run, promising something for everyone — but this time as a reality dating series.

CBS and its sister Australian broadcaster Network 10 have both ordered local versions of “The Real Love Boat,” set to air in the U.S. and Australia later this year. The show is exactly what it sounds like: A reality dating competition show, but patterned after the hit 1970s hour-long comedy “The Love Boat.”

And just as Princess Cruises served as the backdrop to the scripted series, the cruise line’s ships will also serve as a setting for the new unscripted shows.

“The Love Boat” was produced by Aaron Spelling, whose company was later purchased by Viacom — eventually leading to the “Love Boat” IP being owned by CBS Studios. CBS and Network 10 are now Paramount Global brands.

“‘The Love Boat’ is a timeless, romantic concept with universal appeal,...

‘The Real Love Boat’ Reality Dating Show to Set Sail on CBS This Year
Fred Grandy, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Gavin MacLeod, and Lauren Tewes in La croisière s'amuse (1977)
Two groups of lucky singles will be setting sail to find love later this year. CBS and Australia’s Network 10 are bringing “The Love Boat” to life with their latest reality dating series, “The Real Love Boat.”

The series, of course, is inspired by the 1970s scripted series that followed captain Merrill Stubing (Gavin MacLeod) and his crew aboard the Ms Pacific Princess.

“The Real Love Boat” will bring together singles to cruise the Mediterranean on a luxury Princess cruise ship while looking for love. Destination dates, challenges and surprise singles will test the couples’ compatibility and chemistry.

Like the beloved original scripted series, the indispensable crew members including “captain” and “cruise director” will play pivotal roles in the matchmaking and navigation of the romantic (and sometimes turbulent) waters ahead. After almost a month at sea, only one winning couple will make it to the final port and take home...

SAG Awards 2022 In Memoriam: Sunday’s special segment will honor Sidney Poitier, Betty White, Ed Asner and who else?
Image
Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will return to its normal two-hour live format on TNT and TBS. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute. The 2021 segment saluted 55 people because they had responsibility for 14 months instead of 12.

Among that group will certainly be previous SAG president Ed Asner, who was also a life achievement award recipient. That honorary award was also presented to Sidney Poitier and Betty White, who both died this past year.

SAG-AFTRA’s Unclaimed Residuals Fund Grows To $76 Million – Up 60% In 6 Years
Image
SAG-AFTRA’s unclaimed residuals fund has grown to roughly $76 million – up 60% from $48 million six years ago. According to the union, the fund now contains 124,000 separate accounts for members and others, living and dead, that it can’t locate. That’s up from 96,000 accounts in 2016.

“The funds may be unclaimed for a variety of reasons including a bad address or as a result of mail returned for other reasons; unresolved estate issues, or the funds may be in trust for an inactive or dissolved loan out corporation,” a spokesperson for the union said. “Most often, residuals may be waiting for a recipient or their agent to formalize a change of address or submit the appropriate paperwork to claim the funds. ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ Deaths in 2021 Reflect Passage of Time for Network TV
Image
The Wjm-tv newsroom is in mourning.

Betty White’s death on Dec. 31 marked the sixth major figure from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” to pass in 2021. Actors Cloris Leachman, Gavin MacLeod, Ed Asner , series co-creator Allan Burns and director Jay Sandrich also died during the year that just ended.

The coincidental timing of the losses of these legends underscores the passage of time for the network television business. “Mary Tyler Moore,” “All in the Family,” “Mash” and other early 1970s shows ushered in the era of big ensemble comedy hits destined to endure as classics of the form. TV historian Tim Brooks has dubbed this period the “relevance era,” representing a backlash to the fantasy escapism of 1960s comedy hits such as “Bewitched” and “I Dream of Jeannie.”

“Mary Tyler Moore” was endowed from the start with a powerhouse cast, most of whom were also blessed with powerhouse genes.

The Betty White Centennial: Celebrating ‘100 Remarkable Moments in an Extraordinary Life’
Image
Betty White has penned three memoirs and spent a lifetime in the public eye. When author Ray Richmond was approached to write a book timed to White’s 100th birthday on Jan. 17, he questioned whether there was anything left to uncover about her sui generis life and career.

Once he went down the rabbit hole of a quick “facts about Betty White” Google search, Richmond was hooked. “Betty White: 100 Remarkable Moments in an Extraordinary Life,” published this week by Becker & Mayer Books,” became a five-month intensive study on what makes Betty White so beloved as an entertainer and such an enduring figure in pop culture.

Richmond, a former Variety reporter who has penned numerous books, believes White’s authentic “aw shucks” attitude about herself and willingness to go for it with bawdy humor has been crucial to her staying power. There’s a fine line between funny and crass, and...

Emmys Remember Norm Macdonald, Michael K. Williams, Three From ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’; Michael Constantine Among The Overlooked

A few names were left out — most notably Michael Constantine, who won an Emmy in 1970 for his performance as Principal Seymour Kaufman in Room 222 — but the list nonetheless was a somber reminder of the toll taken by 2021. As Bridges and Jon Batiste performed live, the images of such greats as Charles Grodin and Christopher Plummer unspooled, along with beloved icons like Jeopardy!’s Alex Trebek and Cicely Tyson (The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman) and such generational touchstones as Dawn Wells (Gilligan’s Island) and Billie Hayes (H.R. Emmys 2021 In Memoriam: Who was not honored in the emotional tribute segment?
Image
Producers of the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony honored almost all of the expected people who died this past year. Who was not featured during the emotional In Memoriam segment Sunday night on CBS? Prominent performers and character actors such as Frank Bonner, Sean Connery, Michael Constantine, Abby Dalton, James Hampton, Bruce Kirby, Norman Lloyd, Helen Reddy and Jane Withers were not part of the 49 people included.

While over 100 celebrated television people died since last year’s event in mid-September of 2020, the segment generally only makes room for less than 50. Among those featured Sunday night: TV Academy Hall of Fame members actor Ed Asner, production designer Roy Christopher, actress Cloris Leachman, writer/producer William Link and actress Cicely Tyson. Current nominee Michael K. Williams (“Lovecraft Country”) and “Saturday Night Live” veteran Norm Macdonald sadly passed away this month as well.

James L. Brooks Pays Tribute to Ed Asner, Last of the Original ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ Stars
Image
Good night, Lou.

Ed Asner, the famed character actor, activist and union leader who died Sunday at the age of 91, was the last surviving member of original core cast of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

The ground-breaking sitcom that ran on CBS from 1970 to 1977 led Asner to become the first TV actor to play the same character in a comedy, “Mary Tyler Moore’s” irascible Wjm-tv news director Lou Grant, and in the CBS drama “Lou Grant,” where Asner took center stage as a new incarnation of the Grant character in Los Angeles as a big-city newspaper editor.

In the “Mary Tyler Moore” pilot, Asner’s Grant delivers one of the classic TV comedy lines of all time as he interviews Moore’s eager Mary Richards for the associate producer job at Minneapolis’ TV station. “You’ve got spunk,” Grant tells Richards. With the perfect timing that came from his early stage experience,...

Ed Asner Hails ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ Co-Star Gavin MacLeod: ‘He Made Everything Easy’
Image
Gavin MacLeod was a versatile and dependable actor who was a good friend to his co-stars during the seven-season run of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” Ed Asner told Variety in paying tribute to the TV veteran who died Saturday at the age of 90.

MacLeod was an ally to his co-stars in any scene, recalled Asner, who played the voluble Wjm-tv news director Lou Grant on the groundbreaking comedy that aired on CBS from 1970 to 1977.

“He made everything easy,” Asner said.

Off the set, MacLeod was also generous. In the years after the “Mary Tyler Moore Show,” Asner and his wife were having marital troubles. MacLeod and his wife, actor Patti Kendig, made a point of reaching out to the couple out of friendship and concern.

“I realized that whenever I was tense, (MacLeod) was there to relieve it,” Asner recalled. “I treasured his friendship.”

MacLeod himself was a lot...

Gavin MacLeod, ‘Love Boat’ Captain and ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ Star, Dies at 90
Image
Gavin MacLeod, a sitcom veteran who played seaman “Happy” Haines on “McHale’s Navy,” Murray on “Mary Tyler Moore” and the very different, vaguely patrician Captain Stubing on “The Love Boat,” has died. He was 90.

MacLeod’s nephew, Mark See, confirmed his death to Variety. MacLeod died in the early morning on May 29. No cause of death was given, but MacLeod’s health had declined in recent months.

MacLeod played a relatively minor character on ABC hit “McHale’s Navy,” starring Ernest Borgnine, but as newswriter Murray Slaughter, he was certainly one of the stars of “Mary Tyler Moore,” appearing in every one of the classic comedy’s 168 episodes during its 1970-77 run on CBS. Murray was married to Marie (Joyce Bulifant) but was in love with Moore’s Mary Richards. His desk was right next to Mary’s in the Wjm newsroom, so MacLeod was frequently in the shot during the sitcom,...

Evidently quite comfortable at sea, MacLeod also played Seaman Joseph “Happy” Haines on the 1960s ABC sitcom McHale’s Navy (though he was miserable on that show) and was a supporting player on two notable nautical-themed films — Operation Petticoat (1959), with Cary Grant and Tony Curtis, and Robert Wise’s ...

James L. Brooks Remembers Cloris Leachman: ‘She Made Outrageousness Lovable’
Image
To work with Cloris Leachman was nothing less than liberating. That’s how writer-director James L. Brooks remembered his collaborations with the beloved actor who died Jan. 26 at the age of 94.

“Life was not as confining when she was around,” Brooks told Variety of his experiences working with Leachman in the 1970s on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and many years later on his much-praised 2004 comedy “Spanglish.”

“She was the only person I ever knew who could make a certain kind of edgy outrageousness be lovable,” Brooks recalled. “You never knew what she was going to do. She was spontaneous. And there was a vulnerability to her. She was intrinsically funny but also brilliant funny.”

Leachman’s versatility was formidable. She became an Oscar winner for “The Last Picture Show” two years into her five-season run on “Mary Tyler Moore.”

She was in her 40s and had the perspective to...

25 best ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ episodes to celebrate its 50th anniversary [Photos]

Fifty years ago she turned the world on with her smile, and we haven’t stopped laughing since. “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” debuted on September 19, 1970. It’s one of a handful of sitcoms from the CBS network that changed the way television comedies were made. Throughout its seven seasons, the show received 67 Emmy nominations, winning 29, which was a record until 2002 when “Frasier” won its 30th award. It received a nomination for Best Comedy Series each year of its run, winning for each of the last three seasons, and spawned three successful spinoffs: sister sitcoms “Rhoda” and “Phyllis” and acclaimed drama “Lou Grant.” Although the shag carpet, plaid suits and bell bottoms will forever associate “Mtm” with the 1970s, the characters and stories are timeless and just as funny today as they were 50 years ago.

Review: Wonder Woman The Complete Collection
Image
In 1974, I was 16 and curious to see ABC try once again with super-heroes. One fine Tuesday night, I sat at and watched Wonder Woman, horrified at the liberties taken in the backdoor pilot. Cathy Lee Crosby didn’t have the looks or the costume and the most interesting thing about this was Ricardo Montalban as the heavy.

The network somehow still saw the potential in the character and commissioned a more faithful pilot, this time with a comics-accurate costume and perfect casting in Lynda Carter. In the hands of former Batman scribe Stanley Ralph Ross, the show felt right. ABC agreed and a series of Wonder Woman shows were filmed, set in World War II.

This was the beginning of the jiggle era of television, as prime time was filled with busty, often braless actors and they pandered to the women’s movement with female-led shows that didn’t fulfill their promise.
