Blu-ray Review: Alice Wu’s ‘Saving Face’ on the Criterion Collection
Image
In Alice Wu’s 2004 feature-length debut, Saving Face , a Chinese community group holds a dance every Friday night at a banquet hall in Flushing, Queens. The eager regulars are middle-aged moms and aunties who matchmake for their unmarried adult children and sit impatiently on the sidelines to see if their weekly labor bears any fruit. The widowed Hwei-lan (Joan Chen) is one such mom, who steadfastly continues setting up her daughter, a promising surgical resident named Wil (Michelle Krusiec), with different men despite years of failure.

The mostly unspoken tension between Hwei-lan and Wil derives from, and is exacerbated by, the former’s unwillingness to acknowledge that the latter is a lesbian,...

But Allyson turned adversity into action, redefining what it means to be a champion and sparking a movement far beyond the track. Felix’s rejection of the status quo...

Molly O'Brien won an Oscar. Really. Well, sort of
Image
Miles and Keiko O’Brien must be incredibly proud and perhaps just a tad confused as well. That’s because Molly O’Brien, their daughter, won an Academy Award a couple of weeks ago. We kid you not! The night’s winners during the 97th Academy Awards ceremony not only included Mikey Madison, Adrien Brody, Kieran Culkin, and Zoe Saldana -- who plays Uhura in the Kelvin Timeline Star Trek movies -- but Molly O’Brien, who shared the award for Documentary Short Film with Lisa Remington.

O’Brien and Remington took home golden statuettes for The Only Girl in the Orchestra, which, according to Netflix, “celebrates trailblazing double bassist Orin O’Brien, the first woman to become a full-time member of the New York Philharmonic.” Molly O’Brien directed The Only Girl in the Orchestra and produced it along with Remington. The 35-minute short, which is available now on Netflix, previously...

‘Takin’ Care Of Business,’ ‘Deep In My Heart Is A Song’ Among Winners At Inaugural Round Top Film Festival
Image
The music documentary Takin’ Care of Business took care of business at the inaugural Round Top Film Festival in Texas.

The film about Canadian rock musician Randy Bachman – founder of the bands The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive – earned the Audience Award at the debut event in the small town 75 miles east of Austin. The feature directed by Tyler Measom explores how Bachman searched for decades for a precious musical instrument that was stolen from him – his beloved 1957 Gretsch 6120 guitar on which he wrote the hits “American Woman,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet.”

“We are so honored to receive the Audience Award from the Round Top Film Festival!” said Russell Wayne Groves, producer of Takin’ Care of Business. “From the incredible festival founders, Shanna and Skylar Schanen, all the way to the amazing volunteers who kept things running smoothly, we are just humbled...

The Ending of The Invitation (2015) Explained
Image
The real twist of The Invitation 2015 ending is far more unnerving and complicated than expected. The Invitation presents as an isolated event in which a group of friends is lured by a grieving mother and her new partner so that they can be ritualistically murdered. As the night progresses and the house guests are whittled down in a series of attacks, the tension revolves around the survivors' attempts to escape the house in which they have become trapped. All they need to do is find a way out, and then they will be safe.

As written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, most of the tension in The Invitation (which has no relation to the 2022 movie The Invitation) comes in two waves: first, the initial misunderstanding, then the guests' desperation to avoid their fate. It's a complex and layered movie, and the ending of The Invitation sees all its interwoven...

Hollywood’s First Asian American Star Anna May Wong Celebrated in L.A. Museum Show
Image
Anna May Wong — born Wong Liu Tsong in Los Angeles on Jan. 3, 1905 — is widely recognized as Hollywood’s first Asian American movie star.

A year before she died in 1961 from a heart attack at age 56, she joked that her epitaph should be, “I died a thousand deaths.” During her career, she’d appeared in more than 60 films, TV series and theatrical shows, but many of her roles were stereotypical caricatures of Asian women as exotic temptresses, dragon ladies and China dolls who inevitably met their doom so the white leads could attain their happy ending.

Though Wong’s many deaths are well documented on film, her multifaceted life offscreen remained generally unacknowledged until now. For the next seven months, the exhibit Unmasking Anna May Wong at downtown L.A.’s Chinese American Museum (Cam) will shine a broader light on the actress, philanthropist and socialite, who was known variously as...

Craven and Williamson told the following story with this one: In Los Angeles, siblings Ellie and Jimmy come across an accident on Mulholland Drive. Official Trailer for Romance 'Float' with Andrea Bang & Robbie Amell
Image
"Can we just stay in the moment?" Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for a romantic drama titled Float, made in Canada by filmmaker Sherren Lee. This cheesy love story is based on the book of the same name written by Kate Marchant. It's one of these "everything changed when I met this one guy" stories we've seen so many times over and over. A city girl with a life in Toronto, originally from Taiwan, rejected by her parents, makes an impulsive decision to spend the summer at a small town with her estranged aunt. She nearly drowns and is rescued by the lifeguard next door, who offers to teach her how to swim. Of course they fall in love, but will things work out? Float stars Andrea Bang as Waverly, Robbie Amell as lifeguard Blake, Michelle Krusiec, Andrew Bachelor, Rukiya Bernard, and Sarah Desjardins. This looks sweet and sappy and...

Alice Wu's "Saving Face" Told a Queer Asian Story When It Was Far From the Mainstream
Image
This LGBTQ+ History Month, we're asking writers to reflect on a moment in queer pop culture history that has allowed them to experience queer liberation in their own lives. Check out our coverage here.

Long before the commercial success of "Crazy Rich Asians," "Shang-Chi," "Fire Island," and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" heralded a new age of Asian representation in Hollywood, Alice Wu's "Saving Face" paved the way for queer Asian visibility in 2004.

Last year, when I watched the film for the first time, I had a vague inkling that I aspired to become a screenwriter and filmmaker. I had taken a few screenwriting classes through a nonprofit arts organization, but I felt deep insecurity that the subjects I was writing about - my American-born Chinese experience of being queer in an ethno-burb in Los Angeles - were too specific and too esoteric to be relevant to any audience.

A Million Miles Away Review: An Inspirational True Story That Doesn't Go Beyond
Image
A Million Miles Away is a heartfelt biopic that showcases José Hernández's perseverance and the toll his dreams of becoming an astronaut take on his family. While the film lacks depth in exploring José's inner life and relationships, Michael Peña's performance and Rosa Salazar's portrayal of Adela elevate the emotional impact of the story. The film focuses heavily on José's space goals, potentially neglecting other aspects of his life, but still delivers a feel-good and touching narrative with an emotionally satisfying conclusion.

Some of the best stories are the most inspiring ones, but biopics can fail the very real people they’re based on. This is especially true if the film in question is focused more on the message than the person at its center. Directed by Alejandra Márquez Abella from a screenplay by her, Bettina Gilois, and Hernán Jiménez, A Million Miles Away is based on...

A Million Miles Away – Review
Image
Now that most schools are back in session, who’s up for a history lesson? Okay, we had one a few weeks ago with the, still in theatres, Oppenheimer. And though it’s really well done, to be honest, it’s kind of a “downer” what with all the “atomic bomb stuff”. This new flick also deals with science, but it concerns the exploration of space, much like the surprise “crowd-pleaser” of 2016, Hidden Figures. Like that film, it concerns one member, rather than the mathematics trio, of a minority that is usually not the focus of these docudramas. Oh, and rather than the swinging sixties this story is much more recent, capping off in 2009. It’s really the story of a dreamer, a man who dares to imagine leaving Earth to travel A Million Miles Away.

It is the late 1960s when we meet the Hernandez family, who are leaving lots of friends,...

‘The Disappearance of Mrs. Wu’ Acquired by Freestyle Digital Media for Theatrical Release (Exclusive)
Image
“The Disappearance of Mrs. Wu,” a multi-generational comedy starring “Crazy Rich Asians” actor Lisa Lu, is set for a March 17 premiere at the Laemmle Theater in North Hollywood, following the film’s acquisition by Freestyle Digital Media. The coming-of-age story will then have a one-week theatrical run.

Reflective of the feature’s expansive crew of female filmmakers, “The Disappearance of Mrs. Wu” is centered around the challenges of mother-daughter relationships. The film follows Emma (Rochelle Ying), an introverted teenager, on a road-trip up the California coast after her grandmother, Lily (Lu), asks for help breaking out of her nursing home. Along the way, Emma begins to obtain a better understanding of her immigrant mother and their complicated relationship.

Director Anna Chi reunited with screenwriter Donald Martin to pen the project, who she collaborated with on 2008’s “Dim Sum Funeral.” Lu is no stranger to working with Chi either, having appeared...

Free Movie of the Day: Horror movie The Bone Box
Image
On the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel, we will be posting one full movie every day of the week, giving viewers the chance to watch them entirely free of charge. Today’s Free Movie of the Day is the horror movie The Bone Box, which marked the feature debut of writer/director Luke Genton – and this really is a textbook first feature.

First-time filmmakers are often advised to make something that takes place in as few locations as possible, ideally just one for most of the running time, and with few characters. There’s no shame in it. A lot of notable directors have gotten their start with movies that follow this advice. Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead takes place in one location and has very few characters. George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead also does, for the most part (he did need a lot of zombie...

The Invitation's Ending Explained
Image
For the majority of its runtime, The Invitation presents as an isolated event in which a group of friends has been lured by a grieving mother and her new partner so that they can be ritualistically murdered. As the night progresses and the house guests are whittled down in a series of attacks, the tension seemingly revolves around the survivors' attempts to escape the house in which they have become trapped. All the guests need to do is survive long enough to find a way out, and then they will be safe — or so they think. The real twist of 2015's The Invitation's ending is far more unnerving and complicated.

As written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, the majority of the tension in the film comes in two waves: first, the initial misunderstanding, then the guests' desperation to avoid their fate. It's a complex and layered movie, and...

Actress Michelle Krusiec Sets Out to Stop a Supernatural Entity in They Live in the Grey DVD Giveaway
Michelle Krusiec
Sometimes the most emotionally devastating source of grief for a family is caused by a largely unseen entity that leaves clearly observable negative effects on all aspects of their lives. That’s certainly the case for the Lang clan in the horror film ‘They Live in the Grey,’ which premiered on Shudder this past February 17. […]

Vang Brothers' Supernatural Thriller 'They Live in the Grey' Trailer
Michelle Krusiec
This one is formerly known as The Uncanny. Rlje Films has posted this trailer for an indie horror thriller titled They Live in the Grey, which already premiered on Shudder earlier this year. We're just catching up with this one now as they prepare for a VOD / DVD release this summer. The story follows Claire who, while investigating a child abuse case, discovers that the family is being tormented by a supernatural entity. In order to save the family, she must confront her own fears and use her emerging clairvoyance to stop the malevolent force. The film stars Michelle Krusiec, Ken Kirby, and Madelyn Grace. It didn't get great reviews, but it still looks chilling. "The film's title is a brilliant play on the turmoil both the living and dead undergo during the two-hour runtime." This trailer doesn't show much, but better than showing too much. Here's the official trailer...

Stars: Michelle Krusiec, Madelyn Grace, Ken Kirby, Audrey Moore | Written and Directed by Abel Vang, Burlee Vang

They Live in the Grey opens on an ominous note as Claire, depressed by the death of her young son and the subsequent death of her marriage, attempts to hang herself. She’s also begun seeing ghosts, frequently violent and angry ones which results in her sleeping in a closet for safety.

As if this isn’t troubling enough she works for Child Protective Services dealing with cases of abuse. She’s been assigned to the case of Sophie whose parents are suspected of beating her. On her first meeting with the family she sees signs of a supernatural presence in the house. She feels the ghost may be to blame for the girl’s bruises but she can’t exactly tell her boss, who is already pressuring her to close the case,...

They Live in the Grey review – dead people get seen in artful poltergeist chiller
Michelle Krusiec
Abel and Burlee Vang offer a satisfying, troubling portrait of motherhood gone wrong to go with the lashings of gore

They Live in the Grey is another classy effort on the Shudder streaming platform, properly scary and thoughtfully constructed, with unusual editing and framing sleights of hand, co-directed by Hmong-American brothers Abel and Burlee Vang. But Grey also serves an emotionally devastating study of grief, one anchored by a wrenching lead performance from Michelle Krusiec, who plays a social worker Claire Yang. Claire is assigned to investigate a case of possible domestic abuse involving a pre-adolescent girl named Sophie (Madelyn Grace) living in a tense home with parents Audrey and Arthur (Bernard Bullen); Claire starts to see the ghost (Mercedes Manning) of a woman whose poltergeisting may be the cause of Sophie’s bruises. Claire has always been able to see dead people, like the kid in The Sixth Sense,...

How a Podcast Revisits Milestones of Asian American Representation in the ‘Star Trek’ Universe
Image
With the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” airing its finale on Thursday, Jan. 7, it is difficult to overstate what a significant milestone this season marked for representation across the franchise.

Case in point, the series introduced a romantic relationship between the first non-binary and transgender characters in the “Star Trek” universe, played respectively by a non-binary and a trans actor.

This recent spotlight on inclusive casting is part of an extended conversation that longtime fans like Phil Yu have been following over the years. To celebrate the steppingstones, Yu, who founded the “Angry Asian Man” blog centering on Asian American representation in Hollywood, launched a podcast in August, on which he hosts hour-long conversations with “All the Asians on ‘Star Trek.'”

While Yu half-jokingly titled his podcast, he tells Variety now that “the name points out that there are just enough [Asians] involved to make a podcast out of...

‘Hollywood’: Recreating Tinseltown for Ryan Murphy’s Love Letter to Inclusion and Diversity
Image
For Emmy-nominated production designer Matthew Flood Ferguson, working on Ryan Murphy’s “Hollywood” limited series was a labor of love. It’s a post-World War II ode to Tinseltown about aspiring actors and filmmakers with more at stake culturally than artistic success, which required authentic depictions of iconic locations along with fictional composites.

“For me it was a dream job because I had grown up loving the film industry and had been fascinated by it,” Ferguson said, who collaborated with art director Mark Robert Taylor and set decorator Melissa Licht. “So, with some of these locations, like the El Cabrillo [apartment complex], built by Cecil B. DeMille for out-of-state actors who came to work for him, I couldn’t help but feel extra special as we were making the show.”

Armed with volumes of historical photos as reference, Ferguson recreated such landmarks as Schwabs Pharmacy, the Beverly Hills Hotel bungalow, a Hancock Park mansion,...

‘Hollywood’ Emmy interviews: Jim Parsons, Jeremy Pope, Patti LuPone and more [Watch]

The Netflix limited series “Hollywood” premiered on May 1. Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the seven-episode drama imagines the golden age of show business if the era really had been golden for the marginalized groups who were ignored or oppressed by society at large. Now the silver screen fable could have a happy ending at the Emmys. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top Emmy contenders from the show.

David Corenswet stars as an up-and-coming actor trying to become a movie star, but he’s not the only one striving for recognition. So are a gay Black screenwriter (Jeremy Pope), a half-Filipino director (Darren Criss), a Black actress (Laura Harrier) and closeted actor Rock Hudson (Jake Picking), who in real life hid his sexuality from the public throughout his career. How might the world have changed if only the industry’s mostly straight, white, male gatekeepers had...

How Sarah Evelyn redid ‘Hollywood’s’ Oscar costumes after a last-minute epiphany from Ryan Murphy [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“Hollywood” made sure to put the “golden” in Golden Age of Hollywood. Ryan Murphy’s reimagining of an idyllic, progressive 1940s Tinseltown is an aspirational ideal and it needed the resplendent costumes to match.

“It all started with this idea of the Golden Age of Hollywood, which informed the color palette. It was Hollywood glamour, Golden Age of Hollywood, aspirational. It started with everything being [George] Hurrell-inspired, super glamorous and everything having a golden sheen. So that was the jumping off point for our color palette,” Sarah Evelyn told Gold Derby during our Meet the Btl Experts: Costume Design panel (watch above). “It was like gold, butterscotch, caramel and sort of worked itself into the rest of the rainbow.”

Evelyn, who worked with longtime Murphy costume designer Lou Eyrich on the limited series, turned to some ‘40s classics for inspiration to capture the era’s glamorous vibe, including “Now, Voyager” (1942), “Casablanca...

Emmy spotlight: Jeremy Pope (‘Hollywood’) deserves recognition for his TV acting debut after his historic Tony noms
Image
Every year since 2010, Ryan Murphy has had at least one of his productions competing in the Emmy race. He’s looking to continue that trend this year with his latest miniseries, “Hollywood.” While the show does feature a large ensemble of well-established actors such as Darren Criss, Patti LuPone, Dylan McDermott, Jim Parsons and Holland Taylor, there’s one performance in particular that deserves Emmy attention, and that would be newcomer Jeremy Pope.

See‘Hollywood’ Emmy interviews: Jeremy Pope, David Corenswet, Patti LuPone, Michelle Krusiec and more [Watch]

Pope plays Archie Coleman, an aspiring gay black screenwriter who’s facing prejudice during the golden age of Hollywood in the post-World War II era. In the very first episode, he sells a screenplay he wrote about British actress Peg Entwistle for $100, but since he’s black, he won’t be put under contract and needs the money. When aspiring actor Jack Castello...

‘Hollywood’ production designer Matthew Ferguson on recreating 1940s Los Angeles and the 20th Oscars [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Matthew Ferguson had the enviable task of handling the production design on Netflix’s splashy limited series “Hollywood,” a reimagining of Tinseltown in the 1940s. Having previously done set decoration for previous Ryan Murphy projects, this was his first-ever job as a production designer on a TV series. “I was thrilled and honored that he trusted me to do the job so I took it and ran with it,” Ferguson says in an exclusive interview with Gold Derby. “It was just a big collaboration.” Watch the new video interview above.

Every episode of “Hollywood” is a showcase for Ferguson’s production design, between the Golden Tip gas station, the interiors of Ace Studios, the behind the scenes of filming the movie “Meg” and the Oscars. For the gas station, “We found one on Glendale Boulevard and...

Michelle Krusiec (‘Hollywood’): Redemption for bitter actress Anna May Wong [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong gets a new life on Netflix’s “Hollywood.” The series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan takes a revisionist look at the film industry in the 1940s and gives several of the era’s real life stars the happy endings they never had. One such star was Wong, portrayed in the series by Michelle Krusiec. In our exclusive video interview (watch above), she explains the actress’ complicated life and career. “She really became a global star and a global sensation,” she explains, “but her relationship with Hollywood was quite torrid. She was constantly stereotyped.”

When audiences first see Wong, the actress is drunk and bitter in her apartment after years of rejection and being limited to only certain types of roles. Her fortunes begin to turn when an aspiring director (Darren Criss...
