If you weren't sure, then the Aardman animation was given two big thumbs up as recommendations on Sunday night. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, more usually known as BAFTA celebrated the film with a couple of awards. The latest feature film from British stop-motion animation franchise Wallace & Gromit, 2024’s Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Foul, was a big winner at the Feb. 16 BAFTA awards, per Deadline. The movie, which has a perfect 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes,took home two trophies at the awards handed out by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Foul, directed by franchise creator Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham with a screenplay by Mark Burton and story by Burton and Park, took home the award in the Best Children’s and Family Film category as well as Best Animated Film. The great Roger Ebert once called Wallace and Gromit “arguably the two most delightful characters in the history of animation,” and who are we to argue with that? Netflix has revealed the official trailer and posters for Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, the new stop-motion animated comedy film by Aardman Animations. The film will be available on Netflix (excluding the UK) on January 3, 2025.

The first reviews are in for Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, the long-awaited sequel fans didn't know they needed, and it could be the best reviewed movie in the entire stop-motion franchise. Vengeance Most Fowl sees Wallace and his trusty canine side-kick, Gromit, return for a fifth feature film outing, and their first movie since The Curse of the Were-Rabbit way back in 2005. After a nearly 20-year hiatus, fans were worried the new sequel would meet the same fate as 2023's Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, which received mixed reviews from fans and critics. But, Aardman appears to be back in top form with the return of the cheese-loving duo.

Sometimes I think we put too much pressure on Aardman Animation. They’re the filmmakers who brought us “Wallace and Gromit,” “Chicken Run,” “Arthur Christmas” and “Shaun the Sheep,” so they have a very long legacy of high-quality and hilarious movies. Even their underwhelming films, like “Flushed Away,” aren’t nearly as bad as the worst movies made by their competitors. So we expect Aardman — like we expect Studio Ghibli (or like we used to expect Pixar) — to knock it out of the park every single time, and that’s not fair. They’re only human. It would be no great tragedy if the long-awaited, second feature-length “Wallace and Gromit” movie wasn’t very good.

Evincing the charm and splendiferously droll humor that’s endeared Wallace and Gromit to audiences since 1989’s “A Grand Day Out,” the film is reliably uncomplicated in its plotting. In the nearly two decades since our titular duo’s last feature outing, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, societal reliance on smart technology has only ballooned. It has been 19 long years between the first Wallace & Gromit feature in 2005 and now the second in 2024, but it is an understatement to say it was well worth the wait. Nick Park’s and Aardman’s delightful buddy movie, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is an animated film noir merged with the dangers of technology running rampant. Park created this franchise with his 1990 short, A Grand Day Out, and has been going strong with shorts and half-hour specials ever since for W & G. The first feature, Wallace & Gromit: Curse Of The Were-Rabbit was one of the earliest Oscar winners when the feature animation category was established, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see history repeat itself again this year. It’s a commonly held view among both animation aficionados and film fans in general that The Wrong Trousers is one of the best animated films ever made. 30 perfect minutes crammed with character, jokes and the most well directed train chase sequence every committed to film, it won a BAFTA and an Academy Award.

Wallace & Gromit teased their return to the big screen on Wednesday with the trailer and release date for Vengeance Most Fowl, the claymation duo’s newest movie.

Directors Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham helm the project, which sees the return of evil chicken mastermind Feathers McGraw, back for revenge following his role in the Oscar-winning 1993 short, The Wrong Trousers.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, announced by the BBC this summer, will celebrate its world premiere at AFI Fest on Oct. 27, with a limited theatrical release in December. The film will then be released on the BBC in the U.K. at Christmas, and hit Netflix globally on Jan. 3.

It's been 31 years since everybody's favourite cheese loving inventor Wallace and his four-legged best pal Gromit sent felonious fake fowl Feathers McGraw to jail in Aardman's BAFTA- and Oscar-winning short film The Wrong Trousers. The stop-motion franchise returns early next year on Netflix with its first feature in 19 years, “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.” And this time, the titular inventor and his dog are taking on AI.

Per the synopsis, Gromit is concerned that Wallace (Ben Whitehead) is becoming too dependent on his inventions, especially after Wallace invents “smart” gnome Norbot (Reece Shearsmith), who seems to develop a mind of its own.

“When it emerges that a vengeful figure from the past might be masterminding things, it falls to Gromit to battle sinister forces and save his master,” the description reads, “or Wallace may never be able to invent again!”

The “vengeful figure…masterminding things” is none other than villainous penguin Feathers McGraw, who appears for the first time in a feature film after debuting in the franchise’s Oscar-winning short “The Wrong Trousers.”

Earlier this year, it was finally confirmed that a new Wallace & Gromit movie from Aardman Animations is set to arrive on the BBC (in the UK) and Netflix (worldwide) in time for the holidays. Today, it's been confirmed that it will arrive at the start of 2025 on January 3.

Wallace and Gromit are back — and they’re not alone.

The absentminded inventor and his loyal dog sidekick first debuted in 1989’s Oscar-nominated short “A Grand Day Out.” Their adventures would continue in a series of short films and a feature-length movie, “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” (which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature). Now, they are back with a new animated movie, “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.”

In this new movie, Wallace (now voiced by Ben Whitehead) is testing out a new “smart gnome” that soon has a mind of its own. “September 5,” “All We Imagine as Light,” “The Luckiest Man in America,” “Zurawski v Texas,” and “Oh, Canada” are among the titles that round out the 2024 AFI Fest lineup, organizers announced on Tuesday.

This year’s AFI Fest takes place in Los Angeles from October 23 to October 27.

The festival will open with the world premiere of “Music By John Williams,” the upcoming documentary about the Oscar-winning composer John Williams. The film will have a limited theatrical release before arriving on Disney+.

Clint Eastwood’s “Juror No. 2” will close the festival before it premieres in theaters on November 1.

Other big screenings at AFI Fest include “Here,” “Heretic,” “Maria,” “Nightbitch,” “Bird,” “A Real Pain,” “The Room Next Door,” “The Fire Inside,” “I’m Still Here,” “The Order,” and “Unstoppable.” AFI also plans to honor Robert Zemeckis, director of the upcoming film “Here,” which reunites the “Forrest Gump” Oscar winner with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright.

The decision to bring back the evil penguin was motivated by an idea involving gnomes in the Aardman world. Gromit was originally supposed to talk, but became a beloved character through the animator's happy accident.

“You dabbled with aliens,” declares creature that had been posing as an alien hunter named Victor Kennedy. “Now meet the genuine article.”

It’s hard to put into words just how upsetting that genuine article is. Unsightly grey flesh drips from his shoulders and head, so that he resembles more a sentient glob of moldy yogurt than an actual person. Comedian Peter Kay makes his character even more upsetting by bearing his teeth and sticking out his tongue. And that’s before revealing that the faces of his victims protrude from his body still screaming for help, including a character noted for her sweetness stuck to his bottom.

Somehow, the worst part of the monster, dubbed the Abzorbaloff, is his behind-the-scenes origin. The Abzorbaloff design came from a child who won a contest through the long-running kid’s show Blue Peter.
