Tony Amendola and Jamison Jones (The Wretched) have joined the cast of the horror short The Agreement at Clivemore, which is set to begin filming next month.

The short film follows “the retiring Hospital Director of the mysterious Clivemore Hospital, who meets his successor and reveals a disturbing secret: a haunting contract every new employee must sign – no exceptions.”

Amendola will play Doctor Burgos, while Jones will play Paul Echols.

The Agreement at Clivemore is directed by Ryan Godoy (Every Night I See Them) and written by David Draper. Draper’s script was initially adapted into a podcast by UK creators Miscreation and featured in an audio-drama anthology on Spotify, Audible, and Apple Podcasts.

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures on Wednesday announced their acquisition of North American rights to Fourth Grade, a comedy starring William Baldwin (Backdraft), Teri Polo (Meet the Parents), Mena Suvari (American Beauty) and Ben Begley (For All Mankind) that will be released on demand and in theaters in around 10 markets on July 14.

Written and directed by Brazil’s Marcelo Galvão, Fourth Grade takes place at a prestigious, private, Catholic elementary school, where a principal and a drama teacher gather the parents of the 4th grade students to discuss an alarming situation: a brick of marijuana found in the theater class. To protect the school’s reputation, they need to expel the kid responsible for the weed.

Boomerang Productions Media crime mystery to open on August 20.

High Octane Pictures has acquired international rights to Boomerang Productions Media’s crime mystery Collusions ahead of the film’s day-and-date US release this week.

Tom Everett Scott from That Thing You Do stars in the Los Angeles-set story about the intertwined fates of five people and the case of a woman and her missing tooth. Anthony Vietro directed from a screenplay by Monica Zepeda.

Vertical Entertainment will release the film in the US theatrically and on VoD on August 20.

2020 has not been an easy year on cinemagoers, in fact it has been the worst since some of the earlier days of the medium. Still, despite the disappointed sighs that have grown among audiences when hearing another much anticipated film has been delayed further, there has been some plucky films that have thrived at this time of panic. Many of these films have been ones which have solely enjoyed huge VOD success but Brett and Drew T. Pierce’s (known and credited collectively as The Pierce Brothers) horror film The Wretched, is a film which has indeed hit VOD but also cinemas, doing particularly well at select drive-ins Stateside, as it topped the box office six weekends running. The first since Avatar to do so (obviously with wildly different box office takings). And little wonder too, because The Wretched is a film perfect for a drive-in experience and a brilliant throwback horror flick.

The indie film took in $162,000 at 95 sites over the weekend. After premiering at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival, it launched on May 1 at just 11 drive-ins, including the Mission Tiki in Montclair, Calif., where it had an informal premiere.

“Anyone who at this point disputes or discounts the power of the big screen experience need only look at the stellar ongoing drive-in performance of IFC’s ‘The Wretched,'” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

Meanwhile, Quiver’s thriller “Becky” was at the top of the small but growing U.S. box office with $178,186 at 42 locations.

IFC’s horror movie “The Wretched” is leading the small weekend box office with an estimated $186,000 at 59 movie theaters. It drew a respectable $3,153 per theater average during the Friday-Sunday period.

Currently, 348 of the 5,400 North American theaters are open, including 169 drive-ins, according to Comscore. Most movie theaters across the country are still closed due to the virus outbreak. IFC is the only distributor reporting box office totals this weekend.

The horror, which premiered at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival, has scared up a total of $296,954 since launching on May 1 at 11 drive-ins, including the Mission Tiki in Montclair, Calif., where it had an informal premiere. Friday night’s showing at the Mission Tiki was sold out.

IFC also reported its Beanie Feldstein comedy “How to Build a Girl” took in $36,000 at nine drive-in locations and had a 10-day total of $55,802. The film is an adaptation of Caitlin Moran’s 2014 semi-autobiographical novel about an awkward teen who becomes a music critic.

While his parents work out their divorce, Ben (John-Paul Howard) is spending the summer with his dad (Jamison Jones). When Dillon (Blane Crockarell), the kid next door who he’s been looking out for at his Dad’s marina, disappears and nobody else seems to remember him, Ben becomes convinced that Dillon’s mother Abbie (Zarah Mahler) is a witch.

Writing and directing team The Pierce Brothers throw plenty of ideas and sub-genres into The Wretched. There are folk horror elements and iconography at play, suggestions of possession, a marina set teen movie with Ben connecting with local girl Mallory (Piper Curda) and even a Rear Window/Disturbia influence as Ben spies on his neighbours after becoming suspicious of them. Unfortunately, the film often ends up playing as bitty as that list of influences reads.

Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” has become the first Netflix movie to get a Blu-Ray and DVD release, thanks to the Criterion Collection launching a special edition in February.

The release will include five separate documentaries about the creation of the film, and will feature the same 4K master and Dolby Atmos sound that were in the theatrical release. The movie won Academy Awards for Cuaron’s directing and cinematography along with the foreign-language film Oscar.

While vampires and zombies are evergreen horror movie favorites, the motion picture arts have not been particularly kind to that bush-league cousin, the killer tree-spirit. Two of the better-known among relatively few examples are esteemed by bad movie aficionados: There was 1957’s drive-in special “From Hell It Came,” in which an actor lumbering around in a large tree-stump costume squeezed victims to death with his branches; and 1990’s “The Guardian,” a homicidal-wood-nymph thriller that flopped so badly director William Friedkin omitted any mention of it from his otherwise comprehensive career memoir.

There will, happily, be no such cringing required by either makers or viewers of “The Wretched,” an accomplished second feature by Brett and Drew T. Pierce (billed as “the Pierce Brothers”) that is good fun in a vaguely retro, “Lost Boys”-type teen horror way. The absence of marquee value in cast or franchise terms may relegate it to home formats.

A witch that feeds on forgotten children has taken hold of a sleepy lakeside village in Michigan. It’s because its victims are “forgotten,” however, that nobody ever seems to notice. Not only do the adults assist it by either providing themselves as vessel (it steps into the skin of women) or servant (men are turned to drones with a whisper), they have no reason to fight back since what they would be fighting for no longer exists to them. Maybe this “dark mother” will infiltrate a target’s home and steal away control from within or perhaps it will lure in unsuspecting bystanders who still remember and thus have become liabilities. We can never know how long it’s been happening and ultimately must assume it’s never stopped.

As a result, writers/directors Brett and Drew T. Pierce don’t have to pretend this supernatural creature isn’t real.

Two intriguing casting announcements for the second season of HBO’s hit anthology series True Detective are making the rounds online today, with word that About Cherry breakout Ashley Hinshaw and “Jessie’s Girl” singer Rick Springfield have both landed roles.

Deadline reports that Hinshaw, who toplined recent found-footage horror The Pyramid and whose TV work includes True Blood and the upcoming Marvel’s Agent Carter, has been tapped for a multi-episode arc on the second season. She’ll play a troubled starlet.

Meanwhile, Springfield himself revealed his involvement in the second season of True Detective, tweeting out the following on late Wednesday:

On the real-time thriller, from 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV, Jones will play the head of the president's Secret Service.
