Despite ending nearly 15 years ago, Smallville remains a classic among both Superman fans and casual audiences. The hit series lasted for 10 seasons and starred Tom Welling as a young Clark Kent before donning his signature blue, red, and yellow suit. What set Smallville apart however is its split emphasis on Clark and his eventual nemesis, Lex Luthor, portrayed by Michael Rosenbaum. The two young men cross paths when the former saves the latter after his car careens into a lake, subsequently forming a brother-like friendship.
Aside from Welling and Rosenbaum, the cast included Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance, John Glover, Sam Jones III, Justin Hartley, John Schneider, and Annette O'Toole, among others. Though its cast was a major part of the series' appeal, another factor in its success was its reverential treatment of Superman's history. Blue Mountain State was a college football comedy TV series that ran for three seasons on Spike TV in the early 2010s, and starred Reacher's Alan Ritchson as linebacker Thad Castle. The show developed a cult following when it streamed on Netflix, and in Feb. 2024, it was announced that the series would get a fourth season from Lionsgate Television, with stars Ritchson, Darin Brooks, and co-creator / actor Chris Romano returning. And now it looks like Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video may give the greenlight very soon, according to Deadline.
The show centered around a fictional Midwest college called Blue Mountain State, and its powerhouse football team, the Mountain Goats. It followed the main and backup quarterbacks, Radon (Page Kennedy) the egomaniac and Alex (Brooks) who would rather be partying as the backup and hanging with the mascot (Romano). Ritchson's Thad was the team captain and fairly hardcore about football and hazing incoming freshmen.

The Blue Mountain State revival series is seemingly a go at Amazon Prime Video. Alan Ritchson recently confirmed that another season of the cult classic comedy series is in the works for the streaming service.
Speaking with the media on Sunday, Feb. 16, during NASCAR's Daytona 500, in which he served as an honorary pace car driver, Ritchson answered questions about his acting career, including whether Blue Mountain State's Thad Castle or Reacher's Jack Reacher was more fun to play. It was during this answer that the actor shared that Amazon would be the home of the Blue Mountain State revival series. "We're actually setting it up with Amazon," he revealed (via Instagram). Michael Rosenbaum's turn as Lex Luthor in Smallville is still considered the most popular portrayal of the Superman baddie. His Lex pendulum swung between friend and foe, which was not just confusing for Clark Kent (Tom Welling), but also for the actor who played him.
Speaking during a panel at Mega Con, Rosenbaum shared what he considered the most surprising aspects of his character. "That he actually had a soul and wanted to be a good person," the actor said about Smallviille's Lex Luthor via the Cbr X account. "Most of the time, you see him already as the villain. It was very interesting seeing the story evolve and see the arc."

The stars of Smallville recently discussed the Superman prequel series, revealing what mementos they took from the set. The fan-favorite The CW series, which continues to be popular, ended its remarkable ten-season run fourteen years ago.
Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, and Erica Durance were all on the Smallville MegaCon panel. Cbr asked the actors what they had taken from the set, to which the Clark Kent/Superman actor Welling responded, "Just my memories." His co-stars, however, were not quite as reticent. "I got the Smallville jacket. I have Lex's goggles. A picture of the crazy doll," Lex Luthor actor Rosenbaum stated. Kreuk revealed she had kept a memento from one of the wildest Smallville episodes, "Thirst," which had her character Lana Lang turn into a vampire. "My vampire teeth and de-kryptonite necklace," she responded. Durance, who portrayed Lois Lane, kept her character's name tag and entire wardrobe.

In the early 2000s, shameless marketing on classic network shows was not only common but the standard when it came to television programming. Perhaps the most egregious displays of overt product placement came from shows on smaller networks like the WB and its eventual successor, the CW. One show in particular, the hit Superman prequel series Smallville, had a single character often at the center of most of these marketing ploys during the show's earlier years: Sam Jones III's Pete "the Boss" Ross. So, when Pete, who was once Clark Kent's (Tom Welling) best friend, returns in the seventh season episode, "Hero," the entire narrative is framed around this very 2000s style of product placement... And boy is this Stride gum-centered episode a wild ride.

Smallville remains one of the best superhero origin stories of all time, despite never getting past the actual origin story elements. Early in the rise of the superhero genre, Warner Bros. Television took the most famous and powerful superhero of all time back to basics. And thanks to an incredible cast, creative writers, and compelling stories told through the lens of a young adult coming-of-age story, it was a huge hit, paving the way for what would ultimately become The CW's Arrowverse.

Before Tom Welling would play Clark Kent in his pre-Superman years in the hit series Smallville, Christopher Reeve had suited up as the Man of Steel in a series of feature films. The two would unite when Reeve made a special appearance on Smallville, and Welling can still fondly recall the kindness that the beloved actor showed when they were filming the cameo.

To most fans of Smallville, Lex Luthor was the show's most iconic villain. Actor Michael Rosenbaum gave such a standout performance that he is still considered by many to be the quintessential star to play the famed Superman villain. When Rosenbaum left the show, the writers needed to find another villain-shaped void to replace the gaping hole left by Lex's absence in the show. Doomsday/Davis Bloom (Sam Witwer) came onto the scene as the main antagonist in Season 8. By the end of the same season, Zod (Callum Blue) would be introduced as the next formidable force for Clark Kent (Tom Welling) to face. However, this version of Zod would be completely original to the show and different from what had been previously depicted on the CW series.
Blue entered Smallville Season 9 as a new and dynamic version of Zod who would plague the town of Smallville for the final two seasons of the show.

Superman is one of the most popular characters in the entire DC Universe, and the popular comic book "The Death of Superman" has served as inspiration for several projects throughout the years. In animation, live-action, and even video games, the story of Superman's death has been a popular point of adaptation, featuring Doomsday or even bigger villains. While some series have adapted details loosely, including in the Justice League cartoon, where Superman did not actually die but was sent to the future, others have been much more faithful to the source material.

Although Tom Welling played Clark Kent in all 10 seasons of Smallville, the actor never got to properly showcase the Superman suit. While the iconic gear was briefly revealed underneath the character's shirt in the series finale, it didn't really count as getting to don the entire costume.
Welling had always supported the "no tights, no flights" rule set by series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. However, the actor told ComicBookMovie that he has recently had a change of heart. Smallville fans aren't the only ones still waiting for the animated revival series to finally get the green light. Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane in the superhero show, recently shared her thoughts on what she'd like to see from her character going forward.
"I'd love to have explored where she would have gone further in her career," Durance told Screen Rant. "Whether it was for her to be a mother, how she balanced all of that. I'd like to delve a little more into her past, her experiences with her dad, and how her upbringing shaped her a little bit more and just seeing her grow into another person, a grown up version of herself. But I'd love to keep her complicated and full of conflict and not always doing the right thing and not always saying the right thing, because there [are] more people like that out there, I think,...

A Smallville animated series has been in the works for years. While the original cast is ready to lend their voices to their animated cartoon counterparts, Tom Welling says they still need to get the go-ahead from DC execs.
"We've been talking about it for a few years," Welling said during an appearance at the Terrificon convention in Connecticut on Aug 18 (via KryptonSite). "We want to do a Smallville comic book and animated series, and then we would all voice the characters. We've already got an artist, and we have a poster. We haven't been able to share it yet, but Lionel Luthor is looming over everybody, and it's really cool. But we just can't do anything without DC saying we can do it. They just haven't given us a green light, but we're ready, and Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar], who wrote Smallville, want to write it. But it's not our property,...

Kristin Kreuk left Smallville after season 7 due to the end of her contract and the show's shift in focus towards Lois Lane's relationship with Clark. Kreuk returned for 5 episodes in season 8 to tie up Lana Lang's storyline and provide closure to her relationship with Clark. Kreuk is open to returning as Lana in a possible Smallville animated sequel, showing continued interest in the beloved character.
Kristin Kreuk starred in the DC Universe series Smallville for eight seasons before departing the show. The actor was only 18 when she first joined the series as Lana Lang, who was featured in some of Smallville's most rewatchable episodes as Clark's longtime crush and eventual love interest. Michael Rosenbaum left Smallville after season 7 to explore new opportunities, extending his original contract by a year. Smallville set the stage for the Arrowverse and long-form superhero storytelling on TV with its evolving plot and characters. Rosenbaum reflects on his time on Smallville, voicing other DC characters and potentially continuing the series in a different medium.
Michael Rosenbaum, considered by many as the greatest version of the DC Universe villain Lex Luthor put on screen, departed Smallville after season 7. This places him in a long legacy of performers, including Jensen Ackles, who left Smallville early. A prequel to traditional Superman stories, the CW drama Smallville evolved significantly throughout its 10-season run. The show began as a high school drama in the titular town, and spent its final seasons in a hero-populated Metropolis with Clark Kent working as a budding journalist.

Eric Johnson played Whitney Fordman in Smallville, who was initially an antagonist but later became a friend to Clark. Whitney was the first major character to be killed off in Smallville, though original plans could have seen him killed off even sooner. The character's death allowed for Lana's growth and moving on from her first love, making it an important part of the series' storyline.
Eric Johnson only lasted a single season on the DC series Smallville as Whitney Fordman. A complex character with major impacts on some of Smallville's best episodes, Whitney was a star football player who was also in a relationship with Lana Lang. In this, the character initially functioned as an antagonist to Clark. Smallville fan art reveals Tom Welling's potential Superman costume. Tom Welling was a perfect Clark Kent, but the show lacked a full Superman reveal. A possible Smallville animated spin-off could show Welling's Superman.
Smallville may have disappointed fans with a lacking Superman costume reveal in the finale, but some fan art has finally showcased exactly what Tom Welling in the suit could have looked like. Smallville aired on The WB at the end of 2001, and continued for 10 seasons, transitioning to The CW when the channel combined with Upn in 2006. The show provided insight into the early years of the world's most powerful superhero.
Smallville did an excellent job providing an origin for the Man of Steel, and showcasing the struggles of living with superpowers as a young man in school. However, it suffered from a lack of development when the show never saw the boy wonder become the Man of Tomorrow.

Pete Ross, an important character from Smallville, was written out after season 3 seemingly due to story reasons. Sam Jones III, who played Pete Ross, states he found out he was leaving the show abruptly before a convention appearance, creating a difficult experience. Pete Ross's return in season 7 was a disappointment to many fans, as his story did not align with his development earlier seasons.
Pete Ross was a beloved character in the early seasons of Smallville before suddenly leaving the series. Played by Sam Jones III, the DC Universe character was drawn from the Superboy comic books all the way back to 1961, where he played the role of one of Clark Kent's childhood best friends. With the character pulled directly from the comics and with stories centered around his experience of discovering Clark Kent is Superman yet to be told, there seemed to be much left for Pete Ross to do in Smallville.

Sam Jones III left Smallville in Season 3 due to pressure of keeping Clark's secret and personal struggles. Jones returned for a single episode in Season 7 as Pete Ross, facing disappointing character changes. Producers decided to write Pete Ross out of the show despite Jones' desire to stay for more seasons.
Created by Al Gough and Miles Millar, Smallville was a unique approach to telling the story of how Clark Kent eventually became Superman. My Adventures with Superman is one of the most brilliant superhero animated series. Created by Brendan Clougher, Jake Wyatt, and Josie Campbell, the Adult Swim series tells the story of Superman aka Clark Kent as he starts his new job at The Daily Planet, with his roommate Jimmy Olson, and his senior intern at The Daily Planet who is none other than Lois Lane. They quickly become a team and try to bring in big stories so that they can become real reporters while Clark also tries to become the hero he is meant to be. My Adventures with Superman has great action but the brilliant thing about the series is that it isn’t an action series about Superman, it’s a series about a superhero and his relationships as he figures out who he really is. So, if you love the heart, optimism, great story, and fantastic animation...

Blue Mountain State is a college sitcom that depicts American state college culture, including partying and college football. The show originally aired from 2010-2011 on Spike, gained a cult following on Netflix, and received a sequel movie in 2016. The talented cast includes actors like The Bold and the Beautiful star Darin Brooks, Reacher star Alan Ritchson, and Chris Romano, who also co-created the series with Eric Falconer.
Created by Chris Romano and Eric Falconer, Blue Mountain State is a college sitcom about the rowdy misadventures of the titular university's football team, the Mountain Goats. Though fictional, Blue Mountain State embodies the typical American state college by embracing the raunchiest parts of the culture, including binge drinking, drugs, sex, and, of course, the phenomenon that is college football.
Blue Mountain State ran for three seasons from 2010-2011 and originally aired on Spike, but gained a cult following once it started streaming on Netflix.

Alan Ritchson is developing a sequel to Blue Mountain State, with negotiations ongoing for the original series leads to reprise their roles. Despite the actors aging, Ritchson's growing fame could lead the sequel to success. The timing for a Blue Mountain State sequel may be odd, but with Ritchson's success in Reacher and movie roles, now could be the perfect time.
Alan Ritchson is developing a sequel to his show Blue Mountain State. The raunchy sports comedy show surrounded the lives of three college freshmen football players as they navigate a college life filled with football, girls, classes, and shenanigans. Also starring Darin Brooks, Sam Jones III and The Meg's Page Kennedy, the show originally ran for three seasons from 2010–11.
According to Deadline, a sequel is now being developed for Blue Mountain State. Ritchson will reprise his role in the show, which has not fully landed yet as negotiations are ongoing.
